A ward boy of a reputed hospital in Pune was arrested for allegedly filming a woman changing her clothes for an MRI procedure, police said on Sunday.

Police said Lakesh Lahu Uttekar (25) was caught after the woman Saturday night found a mobile phone in the changing room and found a clip in it of her undressing.

“The woman was admitted in the hospital on January 23 for abdominal pain and she was advised to undergo an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan on Saturday. The ward boy asked her to change in a room other than the one designated for the purpose,” a Koregaon Park police station official said.

The woman found a phone in the room and alerted her husband, and on checking the device the couple found a clip of her undressing, the official said.

A complaint was filed at Koregaon Park police station and Uttekar was held after he gave vague answers during the probe, the official added.

He has been charged under section 354 (watching or capturing the image of a woman engaging in a private act in circumstances where she would usually have the expectation of not being observed) of the Indian Penal Code.

The government on Sunday said a national conclave on technical textiles will be held here on January 29, which will also see the release of HSN codes for items under the sector.

The conclave will be presided over by Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.

The release of HSN codes by the Government of India for technical textiles will be one of the major highlights of the conclave, an official statement said.

“Grateful to PM @narendramodi ji & @sureshpprabhu ji for fulfilling textiles industry’s long-standing demand of declaring HSN codes of Technical Textiles items under separate category. 207 items notified as technical textiles will give major boost to the sunrise sector,” Irani had said in a tweet earlier.

In another statement, the ministry said the “Artisan Speak” event will be held at UNESCO World Heritage site Elephanta Caves to showcase the rich handloom and textile tradition of India.

Irani will be present on the occasion. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will also grace the occasion, on behalf of M/s Arvind True Blue Limited.

The occasion will witness commitments by the private sector towards development of handlooms, with the signing of collaborative arrangements between the government and leading retailers and textile brands.

Under the agreements to be signed between Office of Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles and textile companies, Weavers’ Service Centres (WSCs) under O/o DC (Handlooms) will act as a facilitator, linking textile companies and handloom clusters.

“The WSCs will enable textile firms to directly source their requirements from handloom clusters, as per defined quality, cost and time constraints. This will also result in better price realisation and improved market understanding for weavers,” the statement said.

The government recently notified Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes for 207 technical textile merchandise that were till now traded as conventional textiles.

The technical textile sector is the sunshine sector for the textile industry and it is one of the fastest growing segments of the Indian economy.

The sector is expected to see a double digit growth in coming years and is projected to reach a market size of Rs 2 lakh crore by 2020-21.

As per baseline survey of technical textile industry in India, there are around 2,100 units manufacturing technical textiles in the country and most of them are concentrated in Gujarat followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. India has 4-5 per cent share in the global technical textiles market size across twelve segments.

Technical textiles constitute 12-15 per cent of the total textile value chain in India, whereas in some of the European countries technical textiles constitute 50 per cent of the total textiles value chain.

AnandFive-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an exciting draw with Ding Liren of China to move to joint third spot after the penultimate round of Tata Steel masters.

With Carlsen in front and Giri on his toes, Anand, Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren share the third spot jointly on seven points apiece.

A half point behind is Vidit Gujrathi holding the sixth spot solely with a final round match slated against Anand.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal claimed her first BWF title in two years after three-time world champion Carolina Marin of Spain limped out of the Indonesia Masters final due to a leg injury, on Sunday.

The London Olympics bronze medallist, who last won a BWF title in 2017 in Malaysia, was trailing 4-10 in the opening game when Marin decided to withdraw from the contest.

“It is important year for all of us. It was not good to see at all. It is painful. I have been getting injured a lot in the last few years and to see something like this on court is really painful,” said Saina, who had suffered a career-threatening knee injury at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“I know how it is mentally because when I got that knee injury at the Olympics. I was very upset. I was crying like anything. So I know how difficult it is for a player to go through such kind of injuries but the sport is like that, it is cruel.”

It is a creditable performance for the Indian, who had suffered a shin injury late last year.

“But I am not happy with the way I got it today. Of course I am happy that I could reach the finals, beating difficult opponents like He Bingjiao. Both the tournaments, I am very happy with my performance. It is great to beat (Nozomi) Okuhara, Binjiao, Dinar (Dyah Ayustine).

“In the finals, of course Carolina had the upper hand and I wanted to fight and see how the match goes but it was unfortunate what happened,” added the 28-year-old from Hyderabad.

Being chosen for Padma Shri is just pure happiness: Sunil Chhetri

It is a matter of “just pure happiness” for being chosen to receive the prestigious Padma Shri award, Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri has said.

“At the moment, it is just pure happiness. It hasn’t sunk in as yet. I need some time to feel it. I need some time to understand what the recognition actually means,” AIFF quoted Chhetri, as saying.

“Seeing people around me being happy makes me happier. The buzz around has been so wonderful. I feel blessed to be surrounded with people who find more happiness in my achievements,” he said.

“People around me have been jumping with joy. Looking back, this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of so many people,” added Chhetri.

The striker, who has the highest number of international goals for India to his credit, dedicated the award to his family, football fraternity, teammates and fans around the world.

“My mom and dad stay on the top of that list. We owe it all to our parents. My wife Sonam has always been an inspiration. This is also for her as much it is for my sister Bandana, and my two brothers-Sonu and Kunaal,” Chhetri said.

“I also dedicate it to the football fraternity, my teammates, the fans who have been a pillar of strength all throughout my career,” he said.

When asked if the honour will change him as a player, the footballer said: “As a player, I need to keep working hard. There’s no alternative to that. No award can make you a better player unless you strive to be one.”

“But yeah, this is an added motivation for me. This award will surely spur me on, to maybe, be the hungrier, fittest and the sharpest among all in my team,” he said.

Chhetri is the sixth Indian footballer after late Gostho Paul, late Sailen Manna, PK Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, and Bhaichung Bhutia to be chosen for the prestigious award.

bulanshar

The Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday reportedly recovered the mobile phone of policeman Subodh Kumar from the house of main accused Prashant Natt, who had allegedly shot down the policeman on December 3 in Bulandshahr.

Atul Srivastav, Superintendent of Police (SP) City, said, “As per information received from sources, an operation was conducted to recover the mobile of the deceased policeman Subodh Kumar. His phone was recovered from the main accused Prashant Natt’s house.”

The search for the pistol is still underway, he added.

Inspector Kumar was killed on December 3, 2018, in violence that flared up after carcasses of cattle were apparently found in a forest close to a police post in Uttar Pradesh.

Kumar was wounded and later died. A postmortem report had found that the policeman had died of a bullet wound below his left eyebrow.

Cabinet likely to approve agri-package for farmers on Monday

The cabinet on Monday is likely to approve a package for farmers to boost their income and address distress in the farm sector, sources said, adding that the move will come ahead of the general elections.

“The cabinet meeting is scheduled tomorrow (Monday) and the agriculture ministry’s proposal on addressing income deficit syndrome of small and marginal farmers is on the agenda,” a highly placed source said.

The agriculture ministry has recommended several options to provide both short and long term solutions to address agrarian distress. However, a final call will be taken in the cabinet meeting as a huge cost is involved, the sources said.

One of the options proposed is waiving interest on crop loans for farmers who pay on time, costing an additional Rs 15,000 crore to the exchequer, the sources stated.

There is also a proposal to completely waive premium for taking insurance policy for food crops. The centre is also evaluating the scheme followed by the Telangana and Odisha governments wherein a fixed amount is transferred directly into the bank account of farmers, the sources added.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh had recently indicated that the government would announce an agriculture package before the 2019-20 Budget, to be presented on February 1.

Experts said the government has less time to implement any new scheme. The measure has to be such that it can be implemented faster to reap the political gains during the election.

It may be noted that the central government has taken farmers’ issues seriously after the ruling BJP was defeated in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh in the recent state polls, where rural distress was a key factor.

Farmers are in distress owing to fall in prices of most crops in view of bumper crop.

Amarinder wants open jails for women inmates

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has favoured the setting up of open jails for the female prisoners in the state to ease their rehabilitation after release, an official said on Sunday.

The first-of-its-kind prison will allow the female inmates to work outside the inner prison premises, the official said, adding that Singh has sought a proposal from the Department of Prisons.

The Chief Minister had on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed waiting hall for the families of the inmates during his visit to the Patiala Central Jail.

He was informed by the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Rohit Chaudhary that an open jail for male inmates already existed in Nabha and there was a proposal to set up more such jails in Bathinda, SBS Nagar and Kapurthala.

According to the official, the waiting hall would be beneficial for the families of inmates coming from distant places, who earlier had to wait in the open or makeshift sheds.

“These waiting halls are well equipped with facilities like washrooms, water coolers, television etc. Utility stores have also been set up in these waiting halls from where the families can buy items of daily need and give them to their inmate relatives,” an official release said.

The halls are constructed in Central Jail Patiala, Ludhiana and Kapurthala, and work is in progress in Central Jail Ferozpur, Hoshiarpur, New Jail Nabha and Distrcit Jail Sangrur, it added.

Chaudhary also told the chief minister that the government had already approved a fund of Rs 60 crores to purchase security equipment, weapons, building infrastructure and modernisation of prisons, and also for purchase of vehicles for the Prison Department to further strengthen the existing infrastructure in the state jails.

Further, all the prisons were declared polythene free and the carry bags used in canteens will be made from waste newspapers, he added.

On the occasion, Singh also launched ‘e-purse system’ to facilitate prisoners to buy items of daily needs inside the jail.

The system has also been introduced in 15 prisons across the state, where all the financial transactions would be conducted through computer software with the help of smart cards.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a solar power plant installed in the local Central Jail, in order to make the jail eco-friendly.

Chaudhary also informed Singh that such solar plants were also being set up in 19 prisons across the state.

Later, Singh also visited the high-security zone of Central Jail Patiala, where hardcore criminals were lodged, and reviewed the security.
