The family of Shabbir Sayyad, awarded with Padma Shri for his contribution to the welfare of cows, is overjoyed ever since they received news of the national honour.
55-year-old Sayyad who hails from a village in Beed, the epicentre of drought in Marathawada, has been taking care of his 102-strong cattle herd for decades despite belonging to the traditional butchers’ community.
“My father dreamt about saving cattle. As a child, I also started taking care of cows. Due to a dearth of drinking water and feed for the animals, we face difficulty in looking after them. There are some people in the village who donate money for the welfare of the animals,” Sayyad told agencies.
Apart from Sayyad, Ramesh Babaji Maharaj from Uttar Pradesh has also been awarded the Padma Shri for his efforts towards the welfare of animals.
Similarly, Saalumarada Thimmakka from Karnataka and Jamuna Tudu of Jharkhand have been awarded the Padma Shri for their laudable work in the field of environmental preservation.
Actor Kirti Kulhari says while there’s no derth of smart female characters in Bollywood, the industry needs to have wider representation of women on screen, showcasing different facets of them.
The actor says Bollywood shouldn’t “play safe” when it comes to chronicling stories about women.
“I won’t say there arent ‘smart’ roles for women but the variety is limited. I feel the real representation is not widely available in Bollywood. While there are good roles being written for women and people are taking those up, but there’s still so much more to explore,” Kirti told an agency.
“We should go in and get our hands dirty and lets not shy away from really showing and representing the sexual life (of women) or taboo subjects. We are still playing it safe,” she added.
Kirti feels the digital platform is a great space to explore different women stories as it is uncensored and “there are people who are trying to get their hands dirty, be on the receiving side and say- I still want to do this.”
She is currently seen on Amazon Prime Video’s “Four More Shots Please!” which chronicles the story of four female friends who deal with romance, work-life conflicts, ambitions and anxieties.
Kirti, who was recently seen in “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, said the show liberated her.
“In this, I saw a lot of scope for personal growth, an opportunity to liberate myself as Kirti and to actually feel free in ways I thought I hadn’t been for whatever reason. I don’t care what people feel or say about the show.
“From being worried what others are saying about me to being someone who is going to have sex clips taken out of from the show just to look at (without context)- I don’t care.”
“Four More Shots Please!” also features Sayani Gupta, Maanvi Gagroo and Bani J.
A ward boy of a reputed hospital in Pune was arrested for allegedly filming a woman changing her clothes for an MRI procedure, police said on Sunday.
Police said Lakesh Lahu Uttekar (25) was caught after the woman Saturday night found a mobile phone in the changing room and found a clip in it of her undressing.
“The woman was admitted in the hospital on January 23 for abdominal pain and she was advised to undergo an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan on Saturday. The ward boy asked her to change in a room other than the one designated for the purpose,” a Koregaon Park police station official said.
The woman found a phone in the room and alerted her husband, and on checking the device the couple found a clip of her undressing, the official said.
A complaint was filed at Koregaon Park police station and Uttekar was held after he gave vague answers during the probe, the official added.
He has been charged under section 354 (watching or capturing the image of a woman engaging in a private act in circumstances where she would usually have the expectation of not being observed) of the Indian Penal Code.
The government on Sunday said a national conclave on technical textiles will be held here on January 29, which will also see the release of HSN codes for items under the sector.
The conclave will be presided over by Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.
The release of HSN codes by the Government of India for technical textiles will be one of the major highlights of the conclave, an official statement said.
“Grateful to PM @narendramodi ji & @sureshpprabhu ji for fulfilling textiles industry’s long-standing demand of declaring HSN codes of Technical Textiles items under separate category. 207 items notified as technical textiles will give major boost to the sunrise sector,” Irani had said in a tweet earlier.
In another statement, the ministry said the “Artisan Speak” event will be held at UNESCO World Heritage site Elephanta Caves to showcase the rich handloom and textile tradition of India.
Irani will be present on the occasion. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will also grace the occasion, on behalf of M/s Arvind True Blue Limited.
The occasion will witness commitments by the private sector towards development of handlooms, with the signing of collaborative arrangements between the government and leading retailers and textile brands.
Under the agreements to be signed between Office of Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles and textile companies, Weavers’ Service Centres (WSCs) under O/o DC (Handlooms) will act as a facilitator, linking textile companies and handloom clusters.
“The WSCs will enable textile firms to directly source their requirements from handloom clusters, as per defined quality, cost and time constraints. This will also result in better price realisation and improved market understanding for weavers,” the statement said.
The government recently notified Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes for 207 technical textile merchandise that were till now traded as conventional textiles.
The technical textile sector is the sunshine sector for the textile industry and it is one of the fastest growing segments of the Indian economy.
The sector is expected to see a double digit growth in coming years and is projected to reach a market size of Rs 2 lakh crore by 2020-21.
As per baseline survey of technical textile industry in India, there are around 2,100 units manufacturing technical textiles in the country and most of them are concentrated in Gujarat followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. India has 4-5 per cent share in the global technical textiles market size across twelve segments.
Technical textiles constitute 12-15 per cent of the total textile value chain in India, whereas in some of the European countries technical textiles constitute 50 per cent of the total textiles value chain.
Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an exciting draw with Ding Liren of China to move to joint third spot after the penultimate round of Tata Steel masters.
In what turned out to be a theoretical battle, Anand found some fine defensive moves to steer the game to a draw and while the Indian ace can no longer win the tournament, chances of a podium finish remain with just one round to come in the first super tournament of the year.
With Carlsen in front and Giri on his toes, Anand, Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren share the third spot jointly on seven points apiece.
A half point behind is Vidit Gujrathi holding the sixth spot solely with a final round match slated against Anand.
Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal claimed her first BWF title in two years after three-time world champion Carolina Marin of Spain limped out of the Indonesia Masters final due to a leg injury, on Sunday.
The London Olympics bronze medallist, who last won a BWF title in 2017 in Malaysia, was trailing 4-10 in the opening game when Marin decided to withdraw from the contest.
“It is important year for all of us. It was not good to see at all. It is painful. I have been getting injured a lot in the last few years and to see something like this on court is really painful,” said Saina, who had suffered a career-threatening knee injury at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“I know how it is mentally because when I got that knee injury at the Olympics. I was very upset. I was crying like anything. So I know how difficult it is for a player to go through such kind of injuries but the sport is like that, it is cruel.”
It is a creditable performance for the Indian, who had suffered a shin injury late last year.
“But I am not happy with the way I got it today. Of course I am happy that I could reach the finals, beating difficult opponents like He Bingjiao. Both the tournaments, I am very happy with my performance. It is great to beat (Nozomi) Okuhara, Binjiao, Dinar (Dyah Ayustine).
“In the finals, of course Carolina had the upper hand and I wanted to fight and see how the match goes but it was unfortunate what happened,” added the 28-year-old from Hyderabad.
It is a matter of “just pure happiness” for being chosen to receive the prestigious Padma Shri award, Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri has said.
“At the moment, it is just pure happiness. It hasn’t sunk in as yet. I need some time to feel it. I need some time to understand what the recognition actually means,” AIFF quoted Chhetri, as saying.
“Seeing people around me being happy makes me happier. The buzz around has been so wonderful. I feel blessed to be surrounded with people who find more happiness in my achievements,” he said.
“People around me have been jumping with joy. Looking back, this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of so many people,” added Chhetri.
The striker, who has the highest number of international goals for India to his credit, dedicated the award to his family, football fraternity, teammates and fans around the world.
“My mom and dad stay on the top of that list. We owe it all to our parents. My wife Sonam has always been an inspiration. This is also for her as much it is for my sister Bandana, and my two brothers-Sonu and Kunaal,” Chhetri said.
“I also dedicate it to the football fraternity, my teammates, the fans who have been a pillar of strength all throughout my career,” he said.
When asked if the honour will change him as a player, the footballer said: “As a player, I need to keep working hard. There’s no alternative to that. No award can make you a better player unless you strive to be one.”
“But yeah, this is an added motivation for me. This award will surely spur me on, to maybe, be the hungrier, fittest and the sharpest among all in my team,” he said.
Chhetri is the sixth Indian footballer after late Gostho Paul, late Sailen Manna, PK Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, and Bhaichung Bhutia to be chosen for the prestigious award.
