Addressing the nation in the 52nd episode of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the contribution of the Election Commission of India for continuously working towards strengthening the democracy and also urged the youth of the country who have attained the age of voting to register themselves as voters.
The Prime Minister said, “25th January was the day the Election Commission was formed, which is celebrated now as National Voters Day. The scale at which elections are organised in our country astonishes the world. It is natural for every citizen to feel proud of the Election Commission of its meticulous organising abilities.”
Outlining that no stone is left unturned to ensure that every registered voter gets an opportunity to exercise his voting right, Prime Minister Modi added: “Election booths are set-up in places at 15,000 feet above sea-level in Himachal Pradesh and are also made in far away islands of Andaman and Nicobar. People might have also heard about the polling booth in the far away region of Gir forest which is made only for a single voter. When we hear these things, it is nothing but natural to feel proud of the Election Commission.”
“I appreciate the Election Commission for continuously strengthening the democracy. I also value and acknowledge the contribution of the state election commission, security officials, polling officials and others who take part in election exercise and ensure a free and fair election,” he added while hailing the EC.
He also urged the youth born in the 21st century to get themselves registered as a voter, “This year, our country will undergo Lok Sabha elections. This will be first time ever when young people born in the 21st century will get to exercise their Right to Vote in Lok Sabha elections. Now they are going to become a part of nation building. Time has come for them to connect their dreams with the dreams of the country. I urge young generation to register themselves as voters, if they are eligible.”
Stressing further on the significance of voting, Prime Minister Modi said, “Each one of us must realise that this is an important juncture in one’s life to become a voter and exercising the right to vote. We should have a feeling that casting our vote is our duty. If we ever fail to vote due to some unforeseen circumstance, we must feel bad about it. Our nation is paying the price of people who do not go to vote. We should feel the responsibility, this should become a habit. This should become part of our culture.”
He also urged people of the country to come forward and jointly contribute in campaigning for spreading awareness on voter registration and casting vote on the day of polling.
The Prime Minister through his address on the radio aims to connect with the common man on a regular basis and inform them about the initiatives of the government and also seeks the support of the common man in nation building and governance.
The dearest ‘koffee’. Hardik Pandya discovers the kettle is too hot to handle. Considering the recent uproar where the flamboyant all-rounder stole the centre stage abusing his popularity. Not with cricket, but the cricketer. Hardik and Rahul (too) courted controversy and have been pilloried for being “bad” role-models for the way they presented themselves in a recent popular TV show. True, their main job is to entertain us, they never signed up to be role-models (good or bad).
Looks like Hardik Pandya is inspired by Donald Trump, who has a similar attitude towards women. Even Trump, who was reportedly heard making similar loose talk about women, did not brag about his conquest of women, on live TV. Is Hardik even more reckless? Remember, Tiger Woods’ extra-marital infidelity scandal had menaced his moral image — it just goes to show that stupidity has no cultural borders.
Big personalities are highly revered anyway because celebrity itself counts more than a character in a society without any moral ground. Shame and guilt seem to not have as much power over them as it does the rest of us. Is it that the copious flow of fame, glamour, and money, especially in cricket in the last decade, has filled boys with a sense of entitlement?
The cricketing talent got Hardik too much sports celebrity too soon. A playboy with cricketing skills, it is our national problem to liken cricketers to god and expect them to be holy souls! They are often unable to handle all the adulation which comes their way. Some develop arrogance and attitude, but some like Pandya gets misconceived.
Publish and be damned
Hardik’s comments were disrespectful, indeed. Why blame Karan Johar? The conversation (not a cross-examination) did shed the light on the truth. What, if Hardik had replied to Karan that he is a non-sexist (but would have been a liar)? Is it then okay with untruth over sexism? What should get the priority? You and I, but for Karan, would not have known the other side of the cricket star, who picked his words (may not be illegal) seamlessly uncivilised. Isn’t that Karan unfolded a celebrity flaunting the degeneration?
At a time when both the public and media continue to confer celebrity status on more and more bizarre characters, Karan has only showcased the flip side of our ‘hero’. Stories about stars and celebrities do typically fork out revelations, concerning things they have done which they should have desisted. How do you undermine the editorial prerogative? The guest was true to the mood and spirit of the chat, skilfully crafted by the journalist. If sex and crime are bad words, there is no media. Why do some cricketers and celebrities think they are larger than life?
Welcome decision by BCCI
When you humiliate a cricket ball, you are handed a one-year suspension (the leading Australian cricketers are still languishing!). The Board of Cricket for Control India (BCCI), the employer of Hardik Pandya, rightly slapped a show-cause notice on the hard-hitting cricketer. Yes, crooks must be out of the team.
Even match-fixing doesn’t make you a pariah in Indian cricket, but apparently, when you brag about hooking up with multiple women, you are, by your sordid epithets, pitching misogyny, arrogance and brat behaviour to the coming generation. Team India might win a lot more nowadays than earlier, but the team certainly may miss the class and grace, if such players are in the system. By the way, where are the global cricket commentators calling for life bans?
Celebrities and heroes
When you represented Team India, you are already looked up as role-model. However, not every celebrity should be viewed as a hero or a role-model. Celebrities and heroes are the people who risk their lives for our nation, people that endanger themselves for the well-being of others. A person who plays the soldier on the big screen is certainly not the real thing.
Celebrities should be judged based on what they are famous for, as well as how they present themselves in the public. While there are many celebrities that do good for people, they tend to not get as much media attention as those who display inappropriate behaviour.
With the rise of massive entertainment industry (can we add sports?), celebrities became a cheap and casual commodity. Is an honest character seen as totally optional, hopelessly obsolete? Or, is it that goodness would be practically incompatible with fame and success?
Emulate Rahul Dravid
One word has attracted itself to Rahul Dravid: gentleman. The more successful Rahul became, even more, humble he got into. It’s time for the other Rahul to take a leaf from the man of substance, who is morally serious and intellectually curious.
The entire Hardik episode showed that money can’t buy class, and there is more crisis to the character.

Former SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma, who was wanted for Behbal Kalan firing, was arrested on Sunday morning from his house.
He was taken into custody by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) at 4.30 am following a raid at his house.
During the raid, Sharma tried to escape by jumping over the wall but was nabbed.
In 2015, a case was filed against unidentified police officials at Bajakhana police station in Faridkot district after two persons were killed in police firing during an anti-sacrilege protest.
Later in August 2018, acting on the recommendations of the retired Justice Ranjit Singh Commission, the Punjab Police included names of four police personnel in the FIR of the case.
Names of Provincial Police Services (PPS) officers Charanjit Singh Sharma along with Bikramjit Singh, Pardip Singh and Amarjit Singh were added to the case following the directives of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
Two persons were booked in Thane in Maharashtra for allegedly selling T-shirts with the Tricolour printed on them. The duo were identified as Jalinder Karlikar and Amar Adargi from Dombivali here, police said on Sunday, adding that they were booked on the basis of a complaint filed by an organisation called Hindu Janajgruti Samiti.
The display of the national flag is governed by the provisions of Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 and the Flag Code of India, 2002. The Flag Code attempts to bring together all laws, conventions, practices and instructions related to the Tricolour, Senior Inspector V M Pawar of Dombivali police station said.
He further added that the Flag Code lays down that the Tricolour shall not be used as a portion of costume or uniform of any description nor shall it be embroidered or printed upon cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material. All the T-shirts with the national flag printed on them had been seized.
The CBI officer-in-charge who lodged FIR in the alleged irregularities pertaining to the sanctioning of loans by the ICICI bank, has been transferred out.
The development took place a day after CBI booked former MD and CEO of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar, her husband and others in the case.
Sudhanshu Dhar Mishra, who was Superintendent of Police (SP) of Banking and Securities Fraud Cell of CBI, Delhi, was transferred to CBI’s Economic Offences Branch in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
He had signed FIR against Chanda Kochhar, Deepak Kochhar, Venugopal Dhoot and others on January 22 in connection with ICICI-Videocon case.
On January 24, CBI booked former Chanda Kochhar, her businessman husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon MD Venugopal Dhoot in a case of alleged irregularities in the sanctioning of loans by the ICICI bank.
Kochhar had quit the ICICI on October 4 last year in the wake of allegations that she had favoured Videocon in the lending processes because the consumer electronics company’s founders had invested in a company of her husband Deepak Kochhar.
The CBI filed cases against the three along with some others after conducting raids at four premises in Maharashtra, the investigating agency had said.
The preliminary enquiry apparently showed that from June 2009 to October 2011, ICICI Bank had allegedly sanctioned six high-value loans to various Videocon Group companies, CBI sources said.
Chanda Kochhar had taken over the post of the Managing Director of the ICICI Bank on May 1, 2009.
The companies M/S Nupower Renewables Limited (NRL) and M/S Supreme Energy Private Limited (SEPL) have also been named in the case registered by CBI.
It is alleged that SEPL was initially incorporated by Dhoot and his associate Vasant Kakade and the ownership of the company was later transferred to Deepak Kochhar by selling the shares of the company to Pinnacle Energy Trust (PET) which was owned by Kochhar.
It was also alleged that Dhoot had invested a large amount of funds in Deepak Kochhar-owned Nupower months after the Videocon group received Rs 3,250 crore as loan from the ICICI Bank in 2012.
It is the duty of every citizen of India to show respect to the Indian Flag. Streamers made out of small National Flags are often used for decorative purposes on Independence Day and Republic Day. Once the celebrations are over, one finds these flags being trampled upon on the streets or thrown into dustbins. Often, these flags are also burnt along with the garbage. This is an insult to the National Flag. The practice must be stopped at once. Any display of the National Flag must be in strict adherence to the flag code of India. The Centre and the State administrations should ensure this.

Respect for National Flag
To show the love and honour towards Nation, many people buy tricolour caps, band, and badges. Even flags made up of paper and plastics are made are sold in huge volumes. By evening or on a day later to the Republic and Independence Day, all the above stuff is found littering on the roadside. In addition to this, now tricolour t-shirts with Ashok Chakra on it are being sold in markets. Use of tricolour in making t-shirts with Ashok Chakra on it is a dishonor of National Flag and also violates the rules of it. Let’s not make the fashion of tricolour as it is the symbol of sacrifice, peace, and prosperity. I urge the government authorities to take strict action against the manufacturers of such products also it’s the prime responsibility of every individual to boycott such tricolour goods in the market. Desh Prem is can’t be shown in materialistic things, it should be within.

BJP govt honouring Congress leaders with Bharat Ratna now
Congress has ruled the nation for so long but ignored in giving due honours to its top leaders which were considered as a challenger to dynastic rule of Nehru-Gandhi family, may it be Sardar Patel or Subhash Chandra Bose. Even body of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was not allowed entry in Congress office in New Delhi after his death, what to talk about his state-cremation in a privileged area near Rajghat and Vijay Ghat in New Delhi.
BJP government at the centre gave due honour to Sardar Patel through various modes including Bharat Ratna. Now, former President Pranab Mukherjee who was better known as trouble-shooter for Congress party has been honoured with Bharat Ratna. TMC rightly observed that Congress party never made him either party-President or Prime Minister, the posts he deserved the most for saving Congress from continuous downfall.
The dynastic first family of Congress always wanted either member of the family or a dummy person to be posted on these responsible posts. It may be that Pranab Mukherjee might have been seated on the ceremonial post of President of the Nation by Congress because of some practical compulsion like sudden RTI revelations against the person to whom the first family of Congress wanted to make Head of the Nation.

The problem with the security and intelligence agencies in India is the lack of communication and the greed for credit and power. India is not the only exception or victim of such traits. Politics inside the bureaucracy and the power game is almost the same in all the other countries of the world too, but the very basic difference between them and us is the fear of getting caught and getting punished. Deterrence of getting caught and failing in investigation and punishments somewhat control their greed.
We lack proper laws and proper implementation of the same. Those in the power have every knack and control over twisting the law as per their convenience. Those in power and those who have the power are the two most dangerous factors in administration. For example, there are a couple of “information and security research organisations” operating from India but the research they do here is for the foreign countries. We can’t question them or ask for any clarification as they operate from India in the name of “threat analysis/research”. They are not directly working on hardcore intelligence; instead, they are working on the development and activities of various hackers and another acumen that operate from these regions. Now, the question that arises is how hackers and hacking can be an issue for national security?
The problems are not limited to specific categories; the majority of the issues are on smaller scales and that is the reason why they are less talked about, discussed, and thought over. Hence, it’s easier for all these terrorist organisations and other intelligence agencies to target India and that too so frequently. Let us take a simple example of the communication issues over the border areas of India. Mostly, the security personnel/armed forces and terrorists, who are deployed in the border areas, communicate with each other in more or less the same manner and uses almost same technology and communication devices like walkie-talkie, wireless frequency, and satellite phones (mostly used in the base camps because of its high price).
The way interaction gets trapped is not something extraordinary; it happens because of a very simple reason that the communication cannot be encrypted over such mediums and that is why it is easier to intercept them. However, the irony is that it is not necessary that the communication that is intercepted is true and accurate; the possibility of making this conversation for the purpose of misguiding the security forces in and around those areas is high. At the same time, we can’t even ignore them because if by any chance the incident happens, then those soldiers who are deployed in the area will be considered guilty because the communication is passed to the senior officers sitting in the base camps. The percentage of number of security forces deployed in and around the borders is the maximum and the strength of the Indian Army and armed forces is among the Top 6 in the world, so it is not possible to make any excuses for the “manpower”, if such incidents happen and we fail to avoid them.
The very common problem that seems to be simple and hence ignored is “social engineering”. Most of the time, both the forces deployed over the border keeps on scanning the wireless frequency ranges of each other and also the different specific frequency on which the patrolling forces are communicating. Because of the similarity in the language spoken, it is not a hard job for someone who is really good in social engineering to fool and collect information from these various patrolling forces/parties. All you need to do is make a call on the same frequency of the other side party and just ask them in a commanding and confident voice that you are a senior speaking from their respective bases and ask them for their progress or current location or some other outputs. Due to the hierarchy in the forces and couple of protocols which we ignore to follow, it makes it very difficult for that soldier to ask many questions regarding the caller’s identification and justify the reason of calling as no one wants to make their boss unhappy and that too if you are in the armed force.
Thus, these types of problems are not very big and complicated but what makes it more difficult to be taken care of and encountered is the ignorance and lack of interest by those who are responsible for making the protocols and process by the think tanks. Unfortunately, they are focusing more on the issues that happen less frequently but make big news. The problems occurring because of such ignorance are not much talked about and fail to make big news. The one who has to be held responsible for such ignorance is the irresponsible media in such locations. Now, if we talk about these think tanks and decision and policy makers, then they are busy most of the time giving lectures all over the world. They only talk about big and critical issues, which are not present but are expected to happen or occur in the future. What our intelligence agencies are doing working under the banner of “research organisations” is, extracting the money from the central government under the name of “research” or “strategy development” or “analysis”. Someone told me once about one such research which was, “understanding and studying the mind of black hat hackers”. In this research, the organisation took assistance from a couple of senior doctors (more preciously – Psychiatrists) to complete the entire exercise. During their entire exercise, there was not even a single time they talked or discussed things with any hacker or InfoSec professionals (forget about the black hats). They completed the entire exercise and study within the specific time; they even prepared and gave the report to the top bosses. When I came to know about the amount of money spent on this, I was really shocked and was like “OMG”.

India became a self-governing country on August 15, 1947. India is the world’s largest democracy which means that the citizens of the nation hold the power to elect its leader and run the government. Although India attained independence in 1947 from the Britishers, it was on January 26, 1950, when the country adopted its Constitution which promises freedom and equality for all. Therefore, we celebrate Republic Day on January 26 every year. This year, the country will be celebrating 70th Republic Day.
Republic Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the nation. Mumbai is geared up with tight security across the city; Mantralaya and Vidhan Bhavan are also decorated on the occasion. The schools, colleges, government, and private institutions are all decked up to honour the Constitution that came to force on January 26, 1950. The Mumbai schools, colleges, and other educational institutions are going to present several cultural programs; speech recitation, group discussion are also organised by the students to demonstrate India’s rich heritage and culture. On the other hand, Sarkari babus and Netas too are getting groomed for the event. There is Patriotism in every Hindustani, forgetting all the differences.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in India to grace the Republic Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. Ramaphosa is been accompanied by First Lady Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, and a high-level delegation including nine ministers, senior officials, and a 50-member business contingent. He will be the second President of South Africa after Nelson Mandela to be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations. It will be Ramaphosa’s first visit to India as the head of state. India’s Prime Minister Modi will do flag hosting followed by his address to the nation.
The ‘National War Memorial’ near India Gate will also be inaugurated on the eve of the Republic Day to honour the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. IAF will carry out a special fly-past with three helicopters and SU 30 jets on the occasion.
The celebrations this year will be special as 2019 marks the 150th birth anniversary of ‘Father of the Nation’. Around 17 tableaux from states/Union Territories and six from various ministries will be displayed in the parade based on the theme ‘Gandhi’. The Rajpath parade will also see a tableau showcasing ‘Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth’ which is a historical educational institution situated in Varanasi. The tableau will also display the glory of Ghats, Buddhist Monks, rituals, and ancient temples of Varanasi.
Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat is going to receive the Param Vishisht Sewa Medal (PVSM) for his contributions to improve the nation’s military services.
Adding to the grandeur of the commemoration, Indian Air Force will be flying an aircraft which will run by blended bio-fuel on the Republic Day 2019 fly-past with 10 per cent of bio-fuel in it. The aircraft will fly over Rajpath with a ‘V’ shape formation resembling ‘Victory’ sign. This year’s Parade will also witness the inclusion of M777 Howitzer and K9 Vajra, the self-propelled gun which are the latest artilleries inducted in the Indian Army. T-90 tanks, SU-30, Mig 29, Jaguar aircraft will also be a major attraction of the parade. Moreover, this will be the first time in the history that four veteran soldiers of the ‘Azad Hind Fauz’ aged above 90 years will take part in the parade at Rajpath. On the other hand, for the very first time in Indian history, a woman officer would be leading the Army Services Corps in the 2019 Republic Day parade. The Daredevils Motorcycle Team will also include a women officer in their team this year.
Retired Army official Amarnath Chaurasia greeted the nation on the special occasion of 70th Republic day! He said, “I hope this generation will understand the essence of Indian Army and join hands to protect the country. Our country is progressing and we are very happy to see women actively taking charge of the armed forces. Woman officer leading the Army Services Corps in the 2019 Republic Day parade for the first time is a moment of pride for us.”
The list marking the ‘first-time-ever’ special event doesn’t end here. An all-women contingent of Assam Rifles, which is one of the oldest paramilitary forces of India, will take part in the 2019 Republic Day parade. CISF will display its tableau in the parade after 11 years.
In addition to that, it will be the first time that winners of National Bravery Awards might not be able to join the parade at Rajpath as the NGO giving the awards has allegations of financial integrity. However, the winners of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar will get the chance to walk at Rajpath parade.
Brigadier Sudhir Sawant expressed, “In 1991, I was the first one to voice in the Lok Sabha in favour of women participation in the Indian Army. The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and other political parties approved the proposal and since then, women are making their presence in giving security to the country. We are proud to see women in the armed forces; we expect, in near future, the country will be proud to see more women soldiers at the border.”
When it comes to stage appearances and shows by Bollywood Divas there is never lack of fascinating and sizzling visuals equally blended with great dance, costume, makeup, hair and drama.
Recently, the dream girl of Indian Cinema Hema Malini presented her stunning daughter Esha Deol on stage with a fabulous production ‘Ramayan’ choreographed by amazingly talented and highly creative Bhushan Lakhandari.
Ramayan is one story which is performed by many artists through numerous dance styles. But Hema Malini’s Ramayan was class apart, it had the ancient epic story told in a beautifully put musical dance drama format, with perfectly choreographed dance moves that brought alive each character aptly by Bhushan ji.
There are many versions of Ramayan in Indian languages, besides Buddhist, Sikh and Jain adaptations. There are also Cambodian, Indonesian, Filipino, Thai, Lao, Burmese and Malaysian versions of the tale.
As a director Hema ji presented important episodes from the Bala Kanda (Marriage of Ram and Sita), Ayodhya Kanda (Ram Leaving for Exile), Aranya Kanda (Kidnapping of Sita), Kishkindha Kanda (Ram meeting Hanuma and their journey to find Sita), Sundara Kanda (Hamuman meeting Sita) and Yuddha Kanda (Victory of Ram over Ravana).
When I asked our dream girl how she felt while directing Esha as Sita, Hema ji laughed and said, “As a kid, Esha was naughty and would rarely listen to me, finally I am glad I could have my way at least on stage.”
Bhushan sir choreographed and executed each part of the dance drama so perfectly that it looked as if it was not Esha Deol telling us the story of Ramayan but it was Sita herself talking to the audience in regards to all that happened in her life with the ultimate man Rama played beautifully by super talented and very handsome Mithun Shyam.
Happy and contented Bhushan ji praised Esha’s work and said, “Esha has completely taken after her mother, she is a very fine dancer and a performer, she emotes brilliantly and understands the nuances of the character very well, I was glad to choreograph Esha as Sita.”
Talking about dancing on stage Esha said, “From a very young age, Ahaana and I would see our mother practise and rehearse tirelessly, so dance is something that came naturally to both of us.” Explaining further about how she felt while playing the complex role of Sita, Esha said, “Playing Sita is a big responsibility and I am glad it came to me at this stage of my life when I am a mother, more mature and responsible as a human being, So I feel I could do justice to playing such a beautiful character.”
Mithun Shyam who played calm and composed character of Lord Ram was actually super excited about this role, overwhelmed Mithun said, “I consider it a huge learning curve working with Bhushan ji. He is a very learned and experienced master. I got the opportunity to watch a video of his performance recorded over three decades ago. I practiced based on the choreography. It was a challenge to justify such a role. Bhushan ji himself guided and gave me some very valuable suggestions to enhance my performance. On the other hand, Esha is a pleasure to work with, she is extremely professional and carries herself with amazing grace and dignity. She was Sita to the T.”
So did Bangalore based Mithun’s dream come true meeting the dream girl, thrilled with joy Shyma further added, ‘To meet Hema ji was indeed a dream come true. When I was called for an audition I was truly stunned, I wasn’t apprehensive about being selected for the role but thrilled beyond words that I would be meeting ‘The Hema Malini’ herself. Initially, when she spoke to me I was too tongue-tied and I told her that I was unable to speak. She in her diva style laughed and spoke about dance and asked me about my training etc. Then she told me about her expectations for the role, she gave me the exact image she wanted me to portray. Later, Hema ji herself attended, checked and directed us, a dream come true for me indeed.”
Every performer has a bit of nervousness before a show, so did our gorgeous Sita felt the butterflies in her stomach too, Excited Esha replied, “Well, yes before every show one is nervous and so was I, but all the dancers, my co-actors and we all bonded well so the anxiousness was settled.”
After Sita what role would Esha be keen to play was something that was running on my mind and when I asked her about the next character she would want to portray, she gave me a very spiritual answer, she said, “I have always believed that, we do not choose what characters we want to showcase, it is the divine energy up there that chooses us to tell their stories, we are just a medium which the divine uses to narrate their lives and reach out to the audience.”
But still there must be some character that fascinates her and it would be a blessing to play that part, when quizzed about it emotional Esha answered, “When my mother used to play Meera, I would always play the young Meera, now that I am grown up, I hope I am sanctified to play the mature Meera one day.”
Ramayan directed by Hema Malini and choreographed by Bhushan Lakahdari is a visual treat, I suggest if you hear that this show is in your city or is coming to your city then please take out some time and go and see the ultimate epic presented glamorously and alluringly by the team that is known to bring alive our Indian Gods and Goddess like no one else does.
