Mayawati demands ballot papers for Lok Sabha polls, cites EVM hacking claim

MAYAWATI 1

BSP supremo Mayawati Tuesday demanded that the upcoming Lok Sabha polls be held using ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The demand comes after a self-proclaimed US-based Indian cyber expert Monday made a sensational claim that the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were “rigged” through the EVMs, which, he said, can be hacked.

“The latest revelations have made the doubts on the EVMs more serious. It is better under such conditions that the future elections, especially the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, be conducted using ballot papers which can be verified at three levels unlike the EVMs,” she said in a statement issued in Lucknow.

Urging the Election Commission to take strong note of the issue, Mayawati said the latest “revelations” are most sensational and expose the “conspiracy” of the BJP.

“This has directly put the BJP in the dock but the central government is unlikely to take any positive step to address the issue because of its egoistical and stubborn attitude,” she alleged.

She said that the BSP was the first party to question the credibility of EVMs.

Mayawati claimed that the people have also started to feel that their votes are being continuously “looted” in an organised manner.

The BSP chief said the people’s apprehension over ‘vote humara, raj tumhara’ (our vote, your rule) needs to be addressed.

The Class 9 student in her statement to the police said that the accused lured her while she was standing at a bus stand in Sandawata village and then took her to the school, located nearby, where she was a student, Solanki said

The two other accused, Ritik Kushwaha (21) and Shyam Prajapati (22), both working as teachers at the same school, then locked the girl and Khan in a room on the campus where the latter allegedly raped her, the official said.

The girl later went home and informed about the incident to her family members, who registered a complaint at the Chhapiheda police station on Monday.

The three accused were subsequently arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Section 376 (rape) and also relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Solanki said.

The school’s director, Abbas Khan, in an application to the police claimed that he was out of the village on Sunday due to his father’s illness, she said.

The director also told the police that Kushwaha was in possession of keys of the school building, the police official added.

Shut madrasas to check ISIS influence on Muslim children: UP Shia board chief writes to PM

shiaIn a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Shia Central Waqf Board Chairman Waseem Rizvi has demanded shutting down of primary-level madarsas across the country in order to check terror group ISIS’ influence on Muslim children.

Rizvi, who has supported the demand for Ram temple in Ayodhya and uniform civil code, said Muslim children, if they want, can take admission in madarsas after completing high school.

“It can be seen that children are soft targets for running any mission and at this point of time ISIS is a dangerous terror organisation which is gradually getting hold over the Muslim population across the world.

“…if madarasas are not shut down, about half of the country’s population will become supporters of the ISIS ideology in 15 years’ time,” Rizvi said in the letter.

Stressing that the support to the ISIS is clearly visible in Kashmir, where through the monetary support to the children attending madarsas, they are being alienated from people of other religion in the name of Islamic education, he said.

“In the rural areas of the country also, the primary madarasas in the name of donations are harming the future of our children and promoting fundamentalist thinking…this is damaging both the country and the Muslim children,” he said.

Taking admission in madrasas after schooling will not only help them take normal education till the high school-level along with children of different sections of society and religion, but also will deter them from getting easily influenced by fundamentalist thinking.

He has previously supported building of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya and a mosque ‘Masjid-e-Aman’ in Lucknow.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh Tuesday suspended its MLA and the Government Whip in the Assembly Meda Mallikarjuna Reddy from the party amid reports that he was ready to join the opposition YSR Congress.

“Mallikarjuna Reddy is ineligible to continue in Telugu Desam,” party president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced.

There was no place in the TDP for anyone who caused trouble to party workers, he said without elaborating.

The announcement was made after Naidu held a meeting with party workers from Rajampet, the assembly constituency in Kadapa district represented by Reddy, in the backdrop of reports that he was set to join the YSR Congress.

Reddy was the lone TDP MLA to be elected from Kadapa district in the 2014 assembly elections. He was made the government whip.

For five years, he enjoyed everything. We made him the whip and his father Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board member. But, as elections are nearing, he left the party, Naidu said, according to a TDP release.

He told the workers that the TDP would win not only Rajampet but also other segments in Kadapa in the coming assembly elections, saying the government did a lot for the development of the district.

AP govt to provide 5% quota for Kapus out of 10% EWS

andhra cmThe Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to earmark five per cent reservation for upper caste Kapus out of the ten per cent quota for economically weaker sections provided by the Centre recently.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who made the announcement, said the state government had urged the Centre to earmark the quota for Kapu community a long time ago, but the Narendra Modi government had not acceded to it.

“We had requested the Centre to extend five per cent reservation to the Kapu community long ago but the BJP leaders did not agree.

“Now, out of the 10 per cent reservation provided by the Centre to the economically weaker sections, we will give five per cent to Kapus and the balance to the EWS,” Naidu told TDP leaders during a teleconference.

Parliament earlier this month passed a Constitution amendment bill providing for 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and education for economically weaker sections in the general category.

The bill was subsequently forwarded to the Centre seeking a Constitutional amendment to include the community in the backward classes list under Schedule IX of the Constitution as it would exceed the 50 per cent ceiling for reservation imposed by the Supreme Court.

The Centre did not accept the state’s plea on the ground that it violated the apex court judgement.

Earlier, the AP State Commission for Backward Classes had submitted a report recommending the reservation.

However, the Commission’s then Chairman Justice K L Manjunatha was not a signatory to the report and it was submitted to the state government by two other members.

After passage of the bill in the assembly, the Naidu government had been claiming it had honoured its promise on reservation and that it was the Modi government that did not approve the quota for Kapus.

Actor Ellen Page has revealed that during her early 20s she felt “very depressed and very anxious” due to the constant media scrutiny in her sexuality.

The 31-year-old actor, who came out as a homosexual in 2014, told The Observer that it would have been “very harmful” for her if somebody had revealed her sexuality before her.

“I have a responsibility to be out now, because I have these resources. I can access therapists and security and support. But the reality is a lot of people can be in severely grave danger. I think, for instance, it would have been very harmful for me if someone had outed me earlier.

“When I was 20, someone wrote an article with the headline: ‘The Ellen Page Sexuality Sweepstakes’ in the Village Voice. ‘Is Juno a you know?’ I never even touched a woman outside until I was 27. I was very depressed, and very anxious. I was not well,” she added.

When the #MeToo movement started in Hollywood in 2017, Page was one of the women who had accused director Brett Ratner of inappropriate behaviour.

In a lengthy Facebook post Page accused Ratner of making the slur about her to another actors during the first day of filming the movie, in which she was starring as Kitty Pryde.

Recalling the incident, Page said, “Something had switched. I wanted to talk about the sh**tiness I’d seen. I’ve dealt with these difficult things, whether it’s directors trying to sleep with me when I was 16, or stalkers. But there are people in society who deal with far, far worse and cannot access the resources I have.”

“What changed for me after publishing that was the realisation how much crazy s**t happened that was so normalised. And I internalised it. It’s disturbing. Then, talking about it does really open something in you, which is painful in many ways. But that’s what’s letting us all connect and have the conversations, about intersectional feminism, etc,” she added.
