From ceiling fans, blankets, toilet mugs, to iron grills of windows, the Indians Railways conveniently blames its passengers for stealing items worth crores of rupees every year. But, no one questions the Railway Protection Force or other officials for their failure in stopping the thieves. It is obvious, someone stealing ceiling fans and large window grills, or parts of railway track won’t be able to keep the same in their pocket and walk away without being noticed. But hey! Don’t blame the administration.
“Dainik Bhaskar’s sting operation exposed the inconvenient truth”
A CAG report (based on an audit conducted in several trains) released in July 2017 had pointed out that pillows, linen, and blankets were unwashed for two years in some cases. The auditors had also found that pillow covers were made from old bed sheets that were supposed to be discarded. The question is that where do all the brand new items purchased every year go? The answer lies in Dainik Bhaskar’s sting operation.
Between December 9 and 12, journalists from Dainik Bhaskar had conducted a sting operation at multiple locations to expose how IR employees steal various items from trains to make money. Surprisingly, coach attendants from Tatanagar – Chhapra Express, Ranchi – Jaynagar Express, and Saryu Yamuna Express were found selling blankets from compartments for as much as Rs 400 per piece. The report exposed how coach attendants end up selling various items and then wash their hands by merely blaming the passengers for every theft.
“Is every Indian indulged in theft and vandalism?”
After the launch of country’s first semi-luxurious train ‘Tejas Express,’ the railways’ administration claimed that travelers had damaged the train’s LCD systems, soiled the toilets, and stole 12 high-quality headphones that were attached with the entertainment system. Then, dozens of articles were published about how Indians turn into an unruly mob while traveling. Questions were raised about every Indian’s character and if the population deserves to travel in semi-luxurious trains. As usual, no one questioned the railway administration. The IRCTC’s claim about stolen headphones was dicey from day one as the administration had shared conflicting information when it comes to the actual number of stolen devices. The most logical question, why would someone who has paid Rs 1,200 for a single ticket (Rate for the cheapest ticket) steal a headphone worth Rs 30? The train has CCTV cameras in each coach, why is it that the Indian Railways, RPF did not retrieve the CCTV footage and release the identity of those passengers who allegedly took headphones and damaged the LCD screens? Why didn’t the IRCTC initiate legal action instead of issuing news in the media and blaming every railway passenger for the theft?
The RPF, GRP, and state administrators have also failed in controlling stone-pelting incidents that cause damages to local as well as long distance trains in various parts of the country. Passengers injured due to such stone pelting not only end up paying for their treatment but also spend lakhs on advocate fees after approaching the Claims Tribunal for compensation. Increasing the height of boundary walls around the track in vulnerable areas can do the trick. But IR officials are merely making announcements for the same since 2015.
“What’s the problem?”
“The average daily ridership of the Indian Railways is around 30 million passengers. Let’s presume that a minuscule number of travelers out of these might be those who indulge in irrational behavior and steal various items from the train. However, tagging all the passengers as an unruly mob or thieves is surely unacceptable. The inadequate number of RPF personnel to deal with incidents of thefts is also a prominent issue that needs attention. The Indian Railway officials who accuse travelers of stealing its properties should introspect the fact that their staffs such as TTEs and RPF personnel allow the entry of unauthorized vendors, beggars, empty water bottles collectors, etc. in the trains in return of a little sum of money as a bribe. In most of the cases, IR’s employees and these unauthorized vendors, beggars as well as those who collect empty water bottles are the people behind the incidents of theft. It is convenient to shift the blame on the passengers as there is no one to defend them. Dainik Bhaskar’s sting operation has exposed the reality,” said lawyer and RTI activist Rohit Kumar who adores rail journeys.
“PR activities to divert attention from incompetence and corruption”
Under the Modi Government, someone from the Ministry Of Railways has been actively planting stories in the mainstream media with the help of agencies and ‘patriotic’ columnists. News about signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISRO for sharing space technology seems fine if published once, but surely not twice, or thrice. The ministry made such announcement in September 2015, March 2016, and then again in September 2017 as well as 2018. In this era of digital news consumption, readers are smart enough to differentiate between ‘real’ news stories and ‘press releases’ that are presented as news articles.
The ‘senior’ journalists who write exclusive stories about the rail ministry often talk about how passengers damage the properties of railways. However, they never write on scams or theft cases involving IR’s employees. Perhaps, they are also allergic to write a word or two on how trackmen/gangmen and other Group D level employees are used as slaves by seniors. The so-called ‘patriotic’ pages run by fringe elements from one political party often share posts blaming passengers for unclean boogies. But they fail to acknowledge that boogies lack something as basic as dustbins and timely cleaning. Toilets at most of the railway stations remain unhygienic in spite of charging a hefty usage fee to passengers.
The ruling party and its workers cum part-time ‘patriotic’ columnists often tweet and appreciate railways for installing water vending machine kiosks. Is offering clean water to passengers at few selected railway stations an achievement for the rail ministry that it should boast about? The answer to all the questions lies in BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla’s recently released video. She criticized Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and his ministry for indulging in publicity stunts and failing to do anything for improving the existing railway service.

Air quality of Delhi deteriorated to “very bad” category on Friday due to reduced wind speed even as authorities said rainfall predicted in the next couple of days might lower the pollution level.
By data of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall air quality index (AQI) in the city was 348 which fall in the ‘very bad’ category. An AQI between 100 and 200 comes under ‘moderate’ category, 201 and 300 is considered ‘bad’, 301 and 400 ‘very bad’, while that between 401 and 500 is ‘severe’.
Mundrika, ITO and Nehru Nagar recorded ‘severe’ air quality, while 30 areas recorded ‘very bad’ air quality and four areas ‘bad’ air quality. In the National Capital Region (NCR), Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Noida recorded ‘very bad’ air quality while Gurgaon recorded ‘bad’ air quality, the CPCB said.
The overall PM2.5 level (fine particulate matter in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers) in Delhi was recorded at 247, while the PM10 level was at 396, the CPCB said.
The Centre run the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting (SAFAR) said that the air quality may improve in the next two days under the influence of light rain which is expected thereafter.
Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have provided a big distraction for the Indian team by making “inappropriate” comments on women during a TV show. In the build-up to the first ODI, skipper Virat Kohli underlined that the team management is still waiting for a decision to be made regarding a ban or punishment to be meted out to the two players.
Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning here on Saturday.
The team management didn’t announce a shortlist for this game, as is now the norm, and will wait to hear from the BCCI on the two players’ availability. Considering the enormity of this developing situation which is unlike that both Pandya and Rahul will be available for at least the first ODI.
Rahul was unlikely to get a go owing to both his poor form and the presence of a well-settled opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. The bigger question though is regarding Pandya’s absence, for the all rounder provides crucial balance to the ODI side with his ability to bowl 10 overs as well as bat in the middle order. Pandya’s absence could mean that India might have to rejig their bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah has already been rested for this series, as well as the tour of New Zealand, and this allows the think tank to conduct one final experiment with their bowling attack.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a shoe-in, and thereafter it depends if Kohli wants to go in with a three man pace attack to compensate for Pandya’s loss. In such a scenario, Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed are expected to get the nod, as India continue zeroing on the pace quartet for the World Cup squad. There is a sprinkling of grass on the SCG pitch and it could push the Indian skipper to opt for a three-pacer and two-spinner combination.
Most parts of Kashmir including the plains has received fresh snowfall on Thursday night which continued till Friday morning, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir that recorded 5.6 mm of snowfall till 8:30 am Friday which led to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway which is the only all-weather road-link that connects the valley with the rest of the country. The weather is likely to remain cloudy and there is possibility of light snowfall in some of the areas of Kashmir which would persist till the next 24 hours.
It is said that there is possibility of overall improvement in the weather from Sunday. Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40 days harshest period of winter when the chances of snowfall are maximum and the temperature drops considerably. ‘Chillai Kalan’ ends on January 31, but the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir. The 40 days period is followed by a 20 days long ‘Chillai Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day long ‘Chillai Bachha’ (baby cold).

There seems to be no end to woes of scores of commuters in Mumbai as an indefinite strike called by employees of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) continued for the fourth consecutive day on Friday after talks between the union leaders and the officials remained inconclusive.
At least 32,000 employees of Mumbai’s civic transport from a long time have been demanding for merging of BEST budget with ‘A’ budget of BMC. They are also seeking resolution of the issue of employee service residences and recruitment. When the talks with the authorities failed, the employees resorted to the strike.
Shiv Sena party controls the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In the presence of Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the BEST Commissioner Surendra Kumar Bagde, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray met the BEST union leaders on Thursday evening.
The negotiations between the members went on nearly for seven hours but failed to break the deadlock.
BEST, the lifeline of Mumbai has a fleet size of as many as 3200 buses. It the second largest transport system in the metropolis after local trains which ferry more than 70 lakh commuters on a daily basis.
Moreover, a PIL was filed in the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking a direction to BEST workers to end the strike. The court will be hearing it on Friday.

Narendra Modi is the 15th Prime Minister of India and he is in office since May 26, 2014. Many astrologers have predicted that Narendra Modi’s horoscope (birth chart), which is based on the Vedic Astrology as well as on Nadi Astrology principles, predicts that he will retain power under any circumstances.
Mumbai’s Astrologer Prashant Malhotra told this newspaper that “Chandra (Moon) Dasha is operating in Narendra Modi’s horoscope as per Vimshottari Dasha system from mid-July 2010 and it will end in June 2020 which is the Neechanhanga Raja Yoga period which has elevated to the position of a Prime Minister of India from a small-time Chai Wala (tea seller). From June 2020 onwards for seven years, his Kuja (Mars) Dasha will start which will show the real power and might of a king. However, Mars happens to be in debilitation in Cancer in the Navamsa chart which could bring up minor issues. He will overcome this by ignoring his detractors and enemies. 2019 is very bright for him and there are 99 per cent chances of him retaining power again. He will rule with his energy and his social acceptance will only get better in the years to come.”
Complementing PM Modi’s charisma, BJP MP Anil Shirole expressed, “Prime Minister Modi is a popular leader and we are 100 per cent sure that he will be elected as the next Prime Minister of the country. He has worked a lot for the welfare of the citizens and people like him too. If renowned astrologers are predicting in favour of PM Modi, we can be assured of their projection.”
Exchanging views on the same, former Congress MLA Ashok Jadhavtold AV, “The entire media is under Modi’s control, similarly the astrologers are also under the control of the PM and bound to predict in his favour. The Constitutional election process will choose the PM; meanwhile, let the astrologers predict whether Modi will become the PM again or not!”
He went on saying, “Nobody can’t point a finger at PM Modi in today’s time. Actions are being taken against whoever does that. The renowned journalists, who have worked for more than decades, have been forced to take a back seat whenever they questioned Modi and its government.”
“Let’s see how long this Modi wave works. We will fight against all his lies. Modi wave will very soon fall flat. They are many astrologers who are predicting Modi’s downfall in 2019; but unfortunately, that is not being highlighted. Modi himself is aware of his destiny in 2019 and all these are ways to suppress the anti-Modi sentiment,” he added.
Many astrologers have had their way; Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to rule the country for some more years. Two famous astrologers in Kerala have predicted that there would be no alternative for Modi for some years to come. Chithrabhanu K. Poduval, an astrologer from Payyannur in Kannur district said, “Modi belongs to Anuradha Nakshatra or Anizham naal as we call in Malayalam. He is passing through the Sade Sati period [of 7 1/2 years, when Saturn enters the zodiac sign]. Modi’s sign is under the influence of Shani (Saturn) for the next two-and-a-half years. Some horoscopes are desirable for Sade Sati. His is one among them. There was a Rahu Antardasha of the moon in his horoscope when he became the Prime Minister in 2014. It is Rahu (one of the nine planets in Vedic astrology) that gives Modi the intelligence and popularity. His charisma is completely controlled by Rahu.” Poduval further stated that Modi is going to make a comeback to power in 2019.
Poduval was the first astrologer in Asia who had predicted that Modi will become the Prime Minister.
Renowned astrologer Kanippayyur Narayanan Namboodiripad in 2017 said that Modi is passing through a tough phase and it will end around October 2018. As per his analysis, Modi’s horoscope indicates that he will become the Prime Minister in 2019. However, the seats that the BJP will get will be a tad less this time. “Modi should offer prayers to female deities more than male deities as it will help him cross hurdles,” he added.
Another famous Astrologer Pandit Arvind Tiwari too predicted that till 2022, no one can take Modi out of power as his powerful Kundali indicates more power to him. He will be the Prime Minister once again.
Whereas, the same astrologers predicted that Rahul Gandhi not destined to become the Prime Minister anytime soon. Rahul Gandhi turns 48, but luck continues to elude the Congress President. He has no chance to become the Prime Minister in 2019. His horoscope is suggesting that he can change the fortunes of Congress party with some election victories in the Assembly polls.
Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Appa Barne commented, “It’s been long that the Maharashtra Assembly has passed the anti-superstition bill and I don’t think we need to bother about what all these astrologers are predicting. The election process doesn’t work as per astrology or superstition and who will become the PM, entirely depends on the voters’ choice. I don’t see the Opposition coming together against the BJP the way it should and this might lead to the winning of BJP in the 2019 general polls but the party might see a dip in the number of its MPs.”
Criticising the Modi government for being purely dependent on ‘PR activities’, NCP MLA Prakash Gajbhiye stated, “The Modi government must have trust on the EVM rather than the astrologers. It is the EVM that brings out the election mandate. The astrologers predicting PM Modi’s victory is nothing more than superstition. He is the first PM of this country whose government is solely based on the marketing stunts and PR activities.”

As 2019 approached, many astrologers came out of their shell to talk about Modi and Rahul Gandhi. Ninety-nine per cent of the Indian astrologers has predicted Luck for Modi and Unluck for Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, the business of Astrology has boomed in India ahead of the 2019 elections; the small and big, every politician is approaching the astrologers to know what is written in their fate. On one hand, the astrologer is prospering and on the other hand, their business in gemstones, yantra, mantra, Pooja, etc. We may not know the fortune of the political leaders, but the period seems to be very rich and wealthy for all the astrologers around. The voters might have their mindset but much is influenced via predictions too.
Coming to the national Television channels, they are boring to death with a different forecast for 2019. Some even have gone to the extent to tell how India will be in a coming year and what the perfect fate of different celebrities is. In short, the astrologers have a great future ahead as everyone is curious about knowing their own fortune. Meanwhile, there are special shows on ‘BHAVISHYAVANI’ with some Kochar, Acharya Indu Prakash, Acharya blah blah, some beautifully groomed fashionistas talking about Tarot. There are a few who even give you guarantee of 99 per cent results if you follow his/her instructions; some give tips on how to possess a man whom you love. These kinds of shows are nothing but a TRP gimmick. If this astrologer is so perfect in predicting things and has solutions and remedy for whatever you want to possess, then he should actually try to own that 24/7 channel and telecast his rubbish 24/7. Moreover, as he has all the remedies, I am sure he won’t need to struggle much to earn money because he knows and has given loads of such tips earlier to bring wealth in life.
The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should issue advisories to these TV channels for spreading “misinformation”, “fear”, and “horror”. Every morning, they’re imbibing some unexpected fear in common man’s mind. Some channel informs the lucky colour for the day while some say it’s yellow, other say it’s green. Whom to trust? From morning 7 to 9, a person’s vital time is wasted in watching such crap. I know we are not forced to see such programmes, however, it’s the psyche of every common man as everyone is under stress and these kinds of stupid things make them believe in what the astrologer is saying.
However, these days, paid time slots on marketing channels of Dish TV have come up with new programmes where a bunch of astrologers directly get connected to you, boast about them, and give you thousands of instructions; the calls pour in and the astrologer keeps on promoting his business. How funny it is to know that if you call them to know how you can get your missing son back home, from there, they predict and tell you to keep some coins in the right direction of the main door which will result in your son to come back. Why don’t they ask the Mumbai Police to follow these remedies as every day children go missing from Mumbai and have failed to return home? Then some woman suspects her hubby having extramarital affairs and the astrologer again gives a solution and promises that henceforth hubby will close his eyes and never look at any woman further. The God knows whether these solutions work or not but that particular call costs Rs 6 per minute. Thus, you are losing Rs 30 minimum. Each such telecast generates lakhs of rupees. I think the Family court should hire people like these to solve divorce issues and re-settle the families with their remedies.
The Indian Broadcasting Federation (IBF) and the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) members should exercise some restraint while broadcasting such content. Moreover, the hardcore news channels should stop practicing such things. The commercial aspects of the news channels are sucking the brains of the common man by installing such superstition. They claim that a daily dose of ‘Bhavishyavani’ aims to give you practical solutions to all your problems. Dial 0120 – 2517251 and make a refreshing start to know your stars, just a phone call away. How emotional fools are we? They want to extract benefits by pinching your pocket early in the morning and for one in ten thousand by fluke if that works, he becomes the publicity manager for the TV channel and that astrologer. The much faster and effective publicity is word of mouth publicity; these astrologers are very good at social engineering. These are the real hackers, they hack your faith, your emotions, and overall the revenue from your pocket without your knowledge. I don’t know if anyone gets to reach their destination through these programmes. On the other hand, we take miracle dose to combat our problems, but nothing actually works. One of my employees took Rs 7,000 loan from office; the second day, I realised that she has taken that loan to buy an astrological stone to make her stars bright; her faith was forcing her to invest in stones for easy money and quick remedy. She wore that stone and soon after that lost her job due to some behavioral issues. As an Editor of this paper, I know that the only miracle that can make her successful is hard work. Finally, she became frustrated and decided to sell the stone back, she only received 30 per cent returns and 70 per cent of her money has been falsely wasted in superstition. Imagine how many people like her must be getting fooled every day?
No astrologer ever predicted what would be the fate of the Kashmiri Pandits, will they ever return to their houses? Are we going to get money back from the Swiss bank? Will we ever see the Rs 15 lakh amount promised by our PM in our accounts? Can Indian farmers be ever happy? Can the poverty ever get eradicated from India? Whereas, the same astrologers predicted that Rahul Gandhi is not destined to become the Prime Minister anytime soon! However, Modi has a bright future, well this much prediction is given by common people of this country who are not astrologers and the voters.
Why did these astrologers fail to give suggestions to Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev? Why did these astrologers fail to make this very own channel the world’s most popular and number one by proving remedy to switch off all other channels? Television is the next fastest-growing medium and is the largest contributor to global growth. Television’s share of the global ad market has risen steadily over time and shows no sign of reaching a plateau: The amount of time viewers spend watching television continues to increase. Even though viewers are presented with a wider choice of channels than ever, the biggest television show attracting record audiences is astrology and predictions; one of the major revenue chunks is earned by these creeps. We, the people, need to be really smart by not getting influenced by such things. Your vote to a politician is the actual fate decider for this country and its welfare.
