Hart apologises for homophobic tweets again; Rock doesn’t want to host Oscars

kevin hart

Kevin Hart has once again issued an apology to the LGBTQ community for his old homophobic tweets, while his contemporary Chris Rock has said his name can be crossed off this year’s potential Oscars hosts list.

The controversy over using gay slurs in his past Twitter posts led Hart to step down as the emcee of Academy Awards 2019, after apologising for his comments.

On his SiriusXM radio show, “Straight From the Hart”, the comic on Monday said that his words have been “chopped up” following previous apologies.

“Once again, Kevin Hart apologises for his remarks that hurt members of the LGBTQ community. I apologise,” he said.

He later explained the original homophobic joke that landed him in trouble.

Hart quoted the joke, “I want to say that I have no problem with gay people. I don’t have a homophobic bone in my body. I want you to be happy, be gay, be happy.'”

“And then I say as a heterosexual male, if I can do something to stop my son… That’s where the joke starts!” he argued.

“The only clip that I have seen all over the media is the one where I go, ‘Stop! That’s gay’. I really had to dive into the whole thing, even the tweets,” Hart said.

The comedian said the words were “not I said to gay individuals”.

“I didn’t say these words to people, at the time, this was our dumb a**es on Twitter going back and forth with each other. We thought it was okay to talk like that, because that’s how we talked to one another. In that, you go, f**k! This is wrong now,” he said.

Meanwhile, the same day, Chris Rock declared that he had no interest in hosting the Oscars ceremony.

The actor-comic, who has hosted the Academy Awards twice, made his intentions clear during his emceeing gig at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards dinner in Manhattan.

“If it was five years ago, I could say something really offensive and funny right now, but I can’t do that anymore, so… hey!” Rock quipped.

In his impromptu stand-up of sorts, he looked into the audience at Steve Martin and suggested the veteran actor host the ceremony.

“Steve Martin is here. You should host the Oscars. You’re the best. Steve Martin should host the Oscars! Because I’m not doing it, goddammit! You’re not getting me,” Rock said.

As of now, the Academy’s hunt for an Oscars host continues.

Northeast shuts down to protest Citizenship Bill

assam bandh

Agitators clashed with the police, gheraoed Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s house at his native place in Dibrugarh, blocked national highways and damaged vehicles in Assam during an 11-hour “bandh” called by the AASU to protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) activists clashed with the police when they attempted to ransack a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Dibrugarh, prompting the security forces to resort to lathicharge and fire rubber bullets to disperse the protestors.

The AASU has called for a statewide “bandh” and it is being supported by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which withdrew support to the BJP-led government in Assam on Monday.

Opposition Congress, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) are also supporting the bandh.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 aims to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to grant Indian citizenship to those Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who fled religious persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and entered India before December 31, 2014.

Normal life was hit in the Brahmaputra valley and was partially affected in the Barak valley due to a “north-east bandh” called separately by the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), an umbrella organisation of students’ bodies in the region, of which the AASU is a constituent.

The “bandh” called by the NESO on the same issue is being supported by over 100 organisations in Assam as well as in the other north-eastern states.

The protesters blocked roads and national highways by burning tyres and smashed the windshields of trucks, cars and autorickshaws at many places, including in Guwahati, the police said.

Shops, markets, banks and other financial institutions kept their shutters down, educational institutions, private offices remained closed and private vehicles including long-distance buses kept off the roads in the Brahmaputra valley, the police and official sources said.

The “bandh” has hit normal life in Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, according to reports from these states.

BJP faces diverse views from allies on quota to backward classes

OPR

Diverse views of BJP allies Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and Apna Dal (Sonelal) in Uttar Pradesh on reservation to backward classes have become thorn in the flesh for the ruling party ahead of Lok Sabha polls.

While the SBSP has given 100 days’ ultimatum to the BJP to implement recommendations of a social justice committee on backward reservations, the Apna Dal (Sonelal) has raised questions on the basis of the report without caste census.

The committee constituted in May last year had in its recommendations to the state government favoured division of backward castes in three categories — backward, ‘ati picchda’ (very backward) and ‘sarvadhik picchda’ (most backward).

“The recommendations of the committee cannot be implemented without caste census. The government should first do caste census and then implement any such recommendation.

The reservation should be according to ‘jiski jitni sankhya bhari, uski utni bhagidaari’ (based on population). And when the government has not done any census, how can it provide quota within quota,” Union minister and Apna Dal (S) leader Anupriya Patel said.

“If without caste census, the government implements the recommendations, it will be seen as a move of the government to create infighting among backwards,” she said.

On the other hand, SBSP chief and Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said, “If the government does not implement recommendations of the report within 100 days, my party will leave the BJP and contest on all 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.”

“BJP president Amit Shah had said that he would ensure reservation within reservation for backwards before Lok Sabha polls. Now hardly 100 days are left for the polls. We will adopt ‘ekla chalo re’ (march alone) path,” he said.

Backward classes account for about 44 per cent of the electorate in the state and play crucial role in making or marring political prospects of any party.

While two allies of the ruling BJP have expressed divergent views on its implementation, the state’s main opposition Samajwadi Party sees it as a BJP ploy to divide castes for electoral benefits.

The BJP, however, countered the remarks saying politics should not be seen in every policy decision.

BEST strikes: Office-goers highly disturbed, Maha govt invokes MESMA

best 1More than 32,000 employees of Mumbai’s civic transport went on an indefinite strike on Tuesday for over various demands which include higher salaries, inciting the state government to invoke the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) against them. The protest by the employees of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) coincided with the two days nationwide strike which was called by the unions to protests against anti-worker policies and unilateral labour reforms alleged by the government.

The state government invoked the MESMA after the strike affected nearly 25-lakh daily commuters. Some commuters complained that auto rickshaw drivers were trying to take advantage of the situation and were charging five times more than the normal rates. A meeting between Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and leaders of the workers’ union that has called the strike failed to arrive at a positive result.

“The strike is illegal and the agitating staffers have been asked to resume work without delay, considering the hardships faced by the lakhs of passengers. The striking staffers must understand that the government has invoked the MESMA,” a senior civic official told agencies. He also said that, the top officials of the BEST administration would meet the union leaders later in the day to end the stalemate. Otherwise, doors are open for the BEST administration to take action accordingly.

The employees are demanding higher salaries and merging budget of the loss-making transport undertaking with that of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), deliberations on new wage agreement, resuming appointments on compassionate grounds and a bonus equivalent to that of the civic body’s employees.

The BEST has a fleet of over 3,200 red-colour buses, which criss-cross the metropolis and also operate services in the neighbouring districts like Thane and Navi Mumbai. It’s the second biggest mode of transport in Mumbai after local trains which carry almost 80 lakhs passengers on a daily basis.

BEST workers’ union leader Shashank Rao said that since their meeting with Mehta failed to yield any positive outcome, they were continuing with the strike. He said a final decision to end the strike depended on how the administration responds to their demands.

A BEST spokesperson said as many as 10 buses were ransacked in different depots by unidentified persons during the night, but no untoward incident was reported since morning.

Meanwhile, the Central Railway, Western Railway and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) were operating extra local trains and buses to ferry the stranded passengers to their destinations. Several commuters were seen rushing to hitch share auto rickshaw rides and some walked to their workplaces.

Anoop Jagtap, who daily travels from suburban Kurla to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in BEST buses, had to walk two kilometres to reach his office. “I had to walk today as there were no buses and auto-rickshaw drivers were fleecing people by charging five times more than the normal rate,” he alleged. “I reached my office late by over an hour. I hope the strike will end by evening when I have to go back home,” he said.

“Why torture innocent passengers? What wrong have we done to BEST employees and their management?” Anita Nayak, a Ghatkopar resident, told PTI while waiting at a bus stop to get some mode of transport to reach her workplace in suburban Mulund whereas some commuters said that it’s always the passengers who bore the brunt of the feud between the BEST administration and its employees.

Earlier, while responding to a call given by their union leaders, the disturbed staff didn’t take out any bus from all the twenty seven depots as even the BEST administration and an industrial court declared the strike as an illegal act. Meanwhile, union leader Rao said that they hadn’t received the copy of the court order till they went for the strike.

Bimal Jalan panel holds 1st meeting to examine reserve size of RBI; report likely in April

rbi 2A high-level panel led by former RBI governor Bimal Jalan on Tuesday held its first meeting to decide on an appropriate size of reserves that the central bank should maintain and the dividend it should give to the government. The six-member panel is likely to submit its report in April, sources said.

The panel has been entrusted with the task of reviewing the best practices followed by central banks worldwide in making assessment and provisions for the risks which a central bank balance sheets are subject to.

The panel having former economic affairs secretary Rakesh Mohan as its vice chairman will propose a suitable profit distribution policy taking into account all the likely situations of RBI, including the situation of holding more provisions than required.

The government and RBI under previous governor Urjit Patel had been at loggerheads over the Rs 9.6 lakh crore surplus capital with the central bank.

The finance ministry was of the view that the buffer of 28 per cent of gross assets maintained by RBI is well above the global norms of around 14 per cent.

Following this, the RBI board in its meeting on November 19, 2018, decided to constitute a panel to examine Economic Capital Framework.

The committee also includes Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg and two members of RBI central board — Bharat Doshi and Sudhir Mankad, whereas

RBI Deputy Governor NS Vishwanathan is the sixth member of the committee.
