This New Year will witness some fresh pairings and there is one pairing the fans can’t get enough of! It is none other than Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in ‘Gully Boy’ and going by the new posters, the duo is definitely going to create some magic on-screen with this one!

Taking to her Instagram account, Alia unveiled two new posters from her upcoming film.

The first poster reveals Ranveer’s look from the film and introduces him as ‘the voice of the streets’. In the poster, Ranveer looks uber cool with his hoodie on, wearing earphones and keeping the right amount of fringes on his face. Another interesting quotient about the poster is a paper blended in the background with rap lyrics on it while Ranveer stares into oblivion with an intense look on his face.

The second poster features the leading pair together where both of them can be seen dressed in simple attires, listening to music with their earphones on while looking into opposite directions.

On Tuesday, both, Ranveer and Alia took to their social media accounts to share the first poster from their upcoming release with the ‘Lootera’ actor showing his back to the camera while he stares at the sun and a building.

‘Gully Boy’ is inspired by the lives of Mumbai street rappers Divine and Naezy. The film is directed by Zoya Akhtar. This is Ranveer’s second collaboration with Zoya. The first movie they had worked on together was ‘Dil Dhadkne Do’. The film is all set to hit the big screens on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Apart from this, Ranveer and Alia will also be seen in Karan Johar’s upcoming directorial ‘Takht’. The period drama also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor.

Alia also has other films in her kitty including ‘Brahmastra’ opposite rumoured beau Ranbir Kapoor and multi-starrer ‘Kalank’.

Yahswant Sinha, Arun Shourie move SC seeking review of Rafale verdict

YSAS

Former Union ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie, and advocate Prashant Bhushan on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court, seeking review of its December 14 verdict dismissing all PILs alleging irregularities in the procurement of 36 Rafale jets from France.

In their review plea, they alleged that the judgment “relied upon patently incorrect claims made by the government in an unsigned note given in a sealed cover” to the apex court.

They have also sought that the plea be heard in an open court.

The Supreme Court had on December 14 last year dismissed the pleas challenging the deal between India and France for procurement of 36 jets, saying there was no occasion to “really doubt the decision making process” warranting setting aside of the contract.

The top court had rejected the pleas seeking lodging of an FIR and the court-monitored probe alleging irregularities in the Rs 58,000 crore deal, in which both the countries have entered into an inter-governmental agreement (IGA).

The Centre had on December 15 last year filed an application in the top court seeking correction in a paragraph in its judgement on the Rafale deal in which a reference was made about the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report and Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

In its judgement, the apex court had noted that the pricing details have been shared with CAG, and the report of the CAG has been examined by the PAC.

The issue of CAG and PAC was mentioned in paragraph 25 of the judgement of the top court which had held that there were no irregularities in the procurement of the jets from France.

The judgement had said that the material placed before it shows that the Centre did not disclose in Parliament the pricing details of the Rafale fighter jet, but revealed it to the Comptroller and Auditor General.

After the verdict, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who chairs the PAC, had said no such report had come to him.

The Rafale fighter is a twin-engine Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) manufactured by French aerospace company Dassault Aviation.

On first day of 2019, estimated 395,000 babies born worldwide, most in India: UNICEF

More than 395,000 babies were expected to have born around the world on New Year’s Day, with India estimated to record the highest number of these births at nearly 70,000, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said.

As the calendar flips to 2019, about 395,072 babies will be born around the world.

Over half of these births are estimated to take place in eight countries, including India, China, Pakistan, United States and Bangladesh.

India is expected to register 69,944 of these births, followed by China (44,940), Nigeria (25,685), Pakistan (15,112), Indonesia (13,256), US (11,086), The Democratic Republic of Congo (10,053) and Bangladesh (8,428).

As the clock struck midnight, Sydney greeted an estimated 168 babies, followed by 310 in Tokyo, 605 in Beijing, 166 in Madrid, and 317 in New York.

The first babies were born in Fiji in the Pacific, and the US will most likely deliver its last.

As the world enters a new year, UNICEF called on nations to meet every newborn’s right to health and survival.

The agency’s Deputy Executive Director, Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, asked the world to join UNICEF in “making a resolution to fulfil every right of every child, starting with the right to survive”.

The agency warned that in several countries many babies will not even be named as they won’t make it past their first day. According to UNICEF, in 2017, about one million babies died the day they were born, and 2.5 million in just their first month of life.

Most died from preventable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like pneumonia, in what the agency called ‘a violation of their basic right to survival’.

“We can save millions of babies if we invest in training and equipping local health workers so that every newborn is born into a safe pair of hands,” Gornitza added.

The year 2019 also marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Under the convention, governments committed to take measures to save every child by providing good quality health care.

Over the past three decades, the world has seen remarkable progress in child survival, cutting the number of children worldwide who die before their fifth birthday by more than half.

But there has been slower progress for newborns. Babies dying in the first month account for 47 per cent of all deaths among children under five.

UNICEF’s Every Child Alive Campiagn’ calls for immediate investment to deliver affordable, quality health care solutions for every mother and newborn.

These include a steady supply of clean water and electricity at health facilities, the presence of a skilled health attendant during birth, ample supplies and medicines to prevent and treat complications during pregnancy, delivery and birth, and empowered adolescent girls and women who can demand better quality of health services.

2 women enter Sabarimala temple, shrine shut for ‘purification’ ritual

sabrimala 1

Scripting history, two women in their 40s entered the Lord Ayyappa temple in Kerala on early Wednesday and offered prayers.

Speaking to media, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said “it is a fact that the women have entered the temple”.

Following the entry of two women at the shrine, the chief priest has decided to close the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in order to perform the ‘purification’ ceremony.

The temple which opened at 3 am was closed at 10.30 am for performing the ritual. Normally, the shrine closes at 12.30 pm.

Since the purification ceremony is on, devotees have been asked to move out of the shrine.

The shrine will open in the afternoon after completion of the ritual.

Despite the Supreme Court’s historic ruling on September 28 last year, permitting women in the 10-50 age group, no children or young women in the ‘barred’ group were able to offer prayers at the shrine following frenzied protests by devotees and right-wing outfits.

CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told media that the two women have entered the shrine as per the apex court order and the closure of the shrine was against the law of the land.

“People should accept the development as a reality,” Balakrishnan said.

The women trekked to the hill a day after the state-sponsored 620 km-long human wall of women was formed Tuesday from Kasargode in the northern part of the state till the southernmost district of Thiruvananthapuram.

The two women, identified as Kanakadurga (42) and Bindu (42), wearing the traditional black dress, with their head covered, are said to have climbed the hill shrine at 3.38 am Wednesday.

Police have provided security to the homes of the two women fearing possible protests.

On December 24 last year, the two women had unsuccessfully tried to offer prayers at the shrine.

The Lord Ayyappa temple had opened for the 22-day “Makaravilakku” festival on December 30, three days after the conclusion of the 41-day “mandala puja”.

Following the top court verdict allowing women of all ages to offer prayers at the shrine, the CPI(M)-led LDF government had decided to implement the verdict, which was strongly opposed by the main opposition Congress and the BJP.

Bindu, a college lecturer and CPI(ML) activist from Kozhikode district’s Koyilandy, and Kanakadurga, a civil supplies employee from Angadipuram in Malappuram, had come to Sabarimala on December 24 last year after 11 women activists of a Chennai-based outfit were prevented from reaching the shrine and chased away by devotees chanting Ayyappa mantras.

China building ‘most advanced’ naval warships for Pakistan: Report

China is building the first of four “most advanced” naval warships for its “all-weather ally” Pakistan as part of a major bilateral arms deal to ensure among other things “balance of power” in the strategic Indian Ocean, state media reported.

Equipped with modern detection and weapon systems, it will be capable of anti-ship, anti-submarine and air-defence operations, China Daily quoted state-owned defence contractor China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) as saying.

The under-construction ship is a version of the Chinese Navy’s most advanced guided missile frigate, it said.

The CSSC did not specify the ship’s type but said it is being constructed at its Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai.

China, an “all-weather ally” of Islamabad, is the largest supplier of the weapon system to Pakistan. Both the countries also jointly manufacture JF-Thunder a single engine multi-role combat aircraft.

The ship’s class is Type 054AP, which means it is based on the Type 054A of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, the report quoted the Pakistani Navy as saying.

The Pakistani Navy previously said four such ships had been ordered, according to the report.

Once constructed, the warship “will be one of the largest and technologically advanced platforms of the Pakistani Navy and strengthen the country’s capability to respond to future challenges, maintain peace and stability and the balance of power in the Indian Ocean region,” the report said.

It will also support the Pakistani Navy’s initiative of securing sea lanes for international shipping by patrolling distant waters, the daily quoted the CSSC as saying.

The mention of the Indian Ocean is regarded as significant as China, which has already taken over Pakistan’s strategic Gwadar port under the multi-billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), looks to assist the Pakistani navy to restore the balance of power in India’s backyard.

China has acquired the logistical military base in Djibouti and taken over the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka under a 99-year debt swap deal.

China recently denied a New York Times report that it finalised a plan to build advanced fighter aircraft under the CPEC in Pakistan, adding a military dimension to it.

India protested to China over the CPEC as it is being laid through the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Pakistan became the first country to hook on to China’s BeiDou Satellite Navigation System, a rival to the US Global Positioning System (GPS) which went global recently. The system was expected to be used for military applications.

The report said Type 054A is the best frigate in service with the PLA Navy. Military sources said the ship has a fully loaded displacement of about 4,000 metric tonnes and is equipped with advanced radars and missiles. About 30 Type 054As are in service with the PLA Navy.

An insider in China’s shipbuilding sector with knowledge of the Type 054AP programme told the Daily that the ship is the largest and most powerful combat vessel China has ever exported.

“Based on pictures circulating on the internet, the ship will have vertical launch cells that can fire Chinese HQ-16 air-defence missiles and other kinds of missiles. Vertical launch cells will bring flexibility to the user in terms of weapons portfolio, thus giving it a stronger fighting capability,” he said, adding that the Type 054AP is the best frigate Pakistan can access in the international market.

“The service of Type 054APs will double the combat power of the Pakistani Navy’s surface fleet,” he said.

Commenting on the ship’s construction, Cao Weidong, a senior researcher at the PLA’s Naval Military Studies Research Institute, said in the past, the Pakistani Navy would ask its Chinese contractors to use Western radars or weapons on ships constructed by the Chinese shipbuilders because it believed the Western naval technologies were better than Chinese ones.

“But it seems that all weapons and radars on the new ship will be Chinese products, which reflects our progress in the industry and the Pakistani Navy’s confidence in our technology and capability,” he said.

Cao said there are many nations selling frigates in the market, so Pakistan must have made through comparisons in terms of combat capability and costs.

“I believe the reason they chose our type is that ours is one of the few that can carry out all of the air-defence, anti-ship and anti-submarine tasks,” he said, expecting the service of the Chinese frigate to substantially boost Pakistan’s defence capability.

BJP-Shiv Sena lock horns over Ram and Rafale

lead 4Though earlier, the Shiv Sena took a decision to go solo in the assembly elections, the party chief Uddhav Thackeray is yet to make up his mind on whether to go for a seat-sharing formula with BJP or snap poll ties with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Nonetheless, with the nearing of the elections, Sena is leaving no stones unturned to take a dig at its oldest ally party over Ram Mandir and Rafale Scam issues.

On December 24, addressing a rally in Pandharpur, Uddhav Thackeray, as usual in an aggressive stand against its ally BJP, made the remark in a context which was different from the Rafale fighter jet deal issue, on which most of the Congress attacks had been focused. He plagiarised another jibe from Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to target the BJP. ‘Chowkidaar chor hai’, forgetting their alliance with Modi-BJP. He further attacked BJP for not building Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Shiv Sena chief said that it has been 30 years since the Babri Masjid was razed, but the Ayodhya matter is still in court. Thackeray asked the BJP to clear its stand on the Ram temple issue and demanded a discussion in the Parliament even as it mounted an attack on its senior ally over a range of issues, including the Rafale jet deal. He further stated that his party will not allow any “jumlas” (rhetoric) in the name of Lord Ram or any other Hindu god.

In a conversation with AV, Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Shinde expressed, “The Rafale scam is known to everyone and BJP will face problems for it. The Ram Mandir issue is not a vote-bank issue for the Shiv Sena, it’s a religious issue for us. The BJP government has been in power for four-and-a-half years but still, they have not progressed with the Ram Mandir issue. That’s why, the Shiv Sena is raising the question that if the Ram Mandir was in BJP’s electoral agenda, why aren’t they progressing with it?”

Uddhav Thackeray gave a strong message to BJP by passing the statement, “I want to tell BJP one thing, we can forgive you on “Achhe din” jumla and the promise of Rs 15 lakh to each person. But we will not forgive you if you come up with one more jumla on our faith or in the name of god. We will not allow you to make any more false promises in the name of Ram or any other Hindu god,”. The Shiv Sena will expose such “jumlas” in Maharashtra, Thackeray added.

National activist and political analyst Dr. Mukesh Kumar stated the Ram Mandir issue as a political issue more than a religious one. “On this issue Shiv Sena wants to aggressively “hunt two birds with one stone”. Through these issues Shiv Sena can maintain their identity in national politics and expose the BJP’s limitations in Maharashtra. The same agenda of Congress “siege on corruption” was used by BJP during 2014 Lok Sabha election to beat Congress. However, truth is that in the country, none of the capitalist political powers are able to give democracy full justice.”

However, after the Supreme Court gave a clean chit to the BJP government in rafale’s case, in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, Shiv Sena hit out against Modi government saying that there is a sham and fraud across the nation while doubting the Supreme Court’s decision on Rafale deal case. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray asked if this issue has overpowered the judiciary system. Thackeray said, “The question is that if the government has fooled the Supreme Court or did the apex court fool the people?”

After a few days of a veiled attack by Sena that aimed at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on December 31, said he would give a “befitting” reply at the “right time”. He also said that the BJP didn’t attach importance to bickering ally Sena’s diatribe against Modi, and hailed the Prime Minister for “spending each moment of his life to work for the country”.

BJP MP Raksa Karse said, “Ram Mandir has been one of BJP’s most important agendas and we are working on it. We will build the Ram Mandir within our tenure. Why the Shiv Sena, even after being our ally, is raising such questions, is a mystery. In the case of the Rafale issue, our Central leaders have already given their statements. I think the Opposition is unnecessarily creating an issue out of it.”

Thackeray’s remarks were in the lines with Congress president Rahul Gandhi who has been repeatedly hurling the “chowkidar…” jibe at Modi to claim irregularities and favouritism in the Rafale fighter aircraft deal. Thackeray, however, had used the slogan in a different context while narrating an incident during the rally.

Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad commented,“The Rafael issue is a matter of national security and the scam that BJP has committed is harmful for the nation. The ruling government is working for its own interest. They have only made false promises, the Ram Mandir being one of them. How can the Shiv Sena create an issue out of it while still holding on to its partnership in the government? They have no other issue to raise. If they have so much concern, they should leave the government and raise their voice.”

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray’s latest salvo against ally also led to unease and irritation in the camp of the ruling party.Criticising Sena for using uncivilised language and hurling abuses against the Prime Minister and the BJP, the mouthpiece of RSS, who is the parent organisation of the ruling party said that the mighty elephant keeps walking as the dogs keep barking. It also wondered about the ignorance of Thackeray on good works carried out by the state as well as the Modi government for the past four years.

Referring to the recent seat-sharing pact finalised between the BJP, JD(U) and the Lok Janshakti Party in Bihar for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Thackeray said, “I congratulate BJP for joining hands with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had given a slogan of RSS-free Bharat.”

Thackeray has, however, indicated his unwillingness to enter into an alliance with the BJP for the upcoming polls.

Will it be Ram Mandir vs Rafale in 2019?

While Rahul Gandhi is launching new attacks on the Modi government’s involvement in the Rafale scam, on the other hand, the Sangh is also threatening a 1992-like agitation if Ram Mandir is not built, the question that remains – Will it be Ram Mandir vs Rafale in 2019? Recently, BJP lost in Hindu heartland with four states gone out of their hands. Congress made a good comeback with aggressive attacks on Modi over Rafale scam, on the other hand people have realised that Lord Rama makes news for the election campaign and gets ignored for another five years. The Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue is currently ongoing in the Supreme Court. Only after judgement is passed in the favour of the Ram Mandir, can the present status quo be changed. BJP still do not have a majority in Rajya Sabha. The matter is in the court and Allahabad HC has confirmed that it is Lord Ram’s birthplace but instead of restoring the title of the land to rightful owner, divided it into three parts and awarded those to all three litigants, which is perilous. Central government, under PV Narasimha Rao, gave an affidavit to return the land taken over, around the disputed site acquired by VHP for building the temple, back if it’s proved that temple existed where the “Babri” masjid stood.

However badly one might support BJP, it should be acknowledged that this issue is something where it is clearly playing hardcore politics. The party has an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and the same in the UP State Assembly. It can easily draft a constitutional amendment or a bill to override the Supreme Court and do the needful. The question of Rajya Sabha is also simple; they will always find people to support it. Once the procedure starts, any party opposing the bill will leave itself highly vulnerable in the hands of the majority.

We all know how the Ram Mandir issue is used as a “Trump Card”. Imagine that by some means, BJP is in quite a bad shape for 2019 polls. If it brings out the legislation at a critical time, it will be a big win-win situation. If the bill gets stalled in Rajya Sabha, the Congress will be thrashed to the core for being anti-Hindu and if it passes, BJP will make itself extremely strong as the saviour of the Hindu majority. If it’s a worst-case scenario for the BJP with no chance to play the hero card, then, things will be pretty clean. If there’s no decision by the SC and the case be still running in 2019, the NDA will win the Lok Sabha for sure. The BJP would be bound to bring a legislation to make the temple. The bill gets passed, the temple is made, and BJP becomes a hero. But the possibilities are rare as this is the only issue that can fetch them some votes in every election. It is high time that Ram Mandir should be built. It is not the only important issue for them (and Hindus) both culturally and ideologically. It is not some temple at the end of the street but a fight for the Birthplace of Ram. And this issue is no illusion. Imagine a church being built by the Christian crusaders by demolishing the Mecca Masjid. As soon as the Muslims get back in power, they would have demolished it and tried to build an even grander Masjid. But here, even after 70 years of independence and Muslims getting their separate country, no Mandir has been made. The legal battle for Ayodhya has been ongoing since the times of the British. Soon, the Supreme Court may give a day-to-day hearing. If the Muslim and Hindu communities agree for a Ram Mandir, BJP should search for something that breaks this mutual understanding.

BJP and Congress or even any other secular parties will not be interested in solving the Ram Janmabhoomi – Babri Masjid issue. Solved topics never bring votes to the party. Ram Janmabhoomi may bring votes to BJP if the construction started before the 2019 elections. But if it is unsolved, even the promise to build will also bring votes. Everyone knows that Babri Masjid can be shifted to any nearby site because no rituals are taking place in the Masjid and Ram Temple can be built in the disputed site. But no one wants to solve the problem. We can have an amicable solution to this prolonged dispute if our Netas are genuinely interested. Hence, whatever it might be the case, BJP doesn’t want to lose its biggest agenda in its manifesto for the 2019 election. After 2019 elections, the points which indicate this possibility are: if the Supreme Court’s decision will come after 2019 due to some speed breakers in hearing and the BJP wins the general elections 2019 then after the Supreme Court’s order, they will have to take steps for constructing the Ram Mandir and also due to the pressure of Hindus, they will have no excuse for not building the Ram Mandir.

If the Supreme Court’s decision comes after 2019 and the Congress wins the elections they can also take steps in the favour of Ram Mandir but then the chances of their building the Ram Mandir will be very low because firstly, Congress is the party which claims to be secular. Ram temple is a big debate and we don’t know what’s written in Lord Rama’s fate. Is he going to get the shelter or he will be still in transit camp? Meanwhile, Rafale scam is yet to settle, no matter courts have refrained from interfering but opposition came up with awkward questions for BJP.

These two “R” factors – Ram and Rafale are going to be the challenges for BJP in 2019, so let’s see how opposition takes advantage of these issues and how BJP retains power in spite of all the odds and attacks!

Maha govt to sponsor some non-official events to boost tourism

lead122

The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday cleared a proposal to provide government sponsorship to non-official events related to exhibitions, art, culture and cinema to boost tourism.

An official in the Chief Minister’s office said since tourism has immense employment potential, coordination was being done with private sector to tap prospects.

Several private organisations hold exhibitions, conferences related to literature, cinema and theatre and the government had decided to provide sponsorship to these events on certain terms and conditions, he said.

Accordingly, a Rs 12 crore fund has been set aside for annual expenditure for this purpose, the official said.

NCP slams Sena Minister’s comment on Ahmednagar mayoral poll

ncpThe NCP Tuesday termed Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra minister Ramdas Kadam’s comment on NCP corporators supporting the BJP in the Ahmednagar mayoral poll as inappropriate.

BJP’s Babasaheb Wakale was elected Ahmednagar mayor after polling 37 votes despite the party having just 14 seats in the 68-member civic body as 18 NCP corporators, four from the Bahujan Samaj Party and one Independent voted for him.

The Shiv Sena is the largest party in the civic body with 24 seats.

The five Congress corporators in the civic body had abstained from voting.

Kadam had earlier called the BJP-NCP ‘tie-up’ in the mayoral poll as an “illicit” one.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “Shiv Sena should mind its own business rather than making inappropriate. comments against us and our ties with the BJP. Instead, the Shiv Sena should be bothered about its own ties with the BJP.”

Malik said NCP has already issued a show cause notice to the 18 corporators who defied party whip in the Ahmedanagr civic body.

“Despite being told not to support the Shiv Sena and BJP, the local (NCP) leadership took a decision which was against the state leadership directive. Action will be taken against them,” Malik said.
