Murray advances in Brisbane in latest comeback from injury

murray

Andy Murray doesn’t know how long his latest comeback can last, so he’s planning on making the most of it.

The 31-year-old Murray returned to competitive tennis for the first time since September and gradually warmed into it, going on a late roll to take the last four games in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Australian wildcard entry James Duckworth at the Brisbane International on Tuesday.

“It’s been really hard. Eighteen months, a lot of ups and downs. It was tricky just to get back on the court competing again,” said Murray, who had a noticeable limp between points but didn’t show many injury signs during rallies of strain from his troublesome hip.

“I’m happy I’m back out here competing again.” He appeared stiff and rusty to start the match but managed to chase down Duckworth’s chips and drop shots and moved across court well, twice manufacturing forehand winners from defensive positions on important points.

Winner of three majors and a five-time finalist at the Australian Open, Murray is playing on a protected ranking in Brisbane after sliding to No. 240 in a 2018 season in which he finished 7-5 from 12 matches after surgery on his right hip in January. He missed the last five weeks of the season with an ankle injury.

“I want to try to enjoy it as much as I can,” Murray, a two-time champion in Brisbane, told the crowd in a post-match interview.

“I’m not sure how much longer it’s going to last.” No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal is also scheduled this week to play his first competitive match since September, but he is taking a cautious approach after being restricted to nine tournaments last year because of injuries.

“After the surgeries, I don’t want to do it a step back. I want to move forward,” he said.

“After all I suffered last year in terms of injuries, I don’t want to do mistakes in terms of playing without being 100 percent.” Nadal is set to play either Jo-Wilfried

Tsonga or Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round on Thursday.

“I’m here, so I hope to be ready for it. My goal is, of course, to be on court on Thursday and to be on court with a positive feeling.”

Correction of names, particulars in Assam NRC to begin from Jan 2

asaamThe process for correcting names and other particulars that appeared in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens will begin from January 2, said a notice issued by the office of NRC Assam.

According to the notice issued by NRC state coordinator, Government of Assam, “Name, etc Correction – Services for online correction of names and other particulars appearing in Draft NRC will be started from 10 am of Jan 2, 2019.

“This facility can be availed by visiting NRC Assam’s website www.nrcassam.nic.in. Facility for name correction will also be available by submission of correction forms at NRC Seva Kendras (NSKs). These facilities will be available till December 31, 2019,” the notice stated.

The process has no connection with the submission of claims and objections which got over on December 31, 2018, it said.

The Supreme Court had pushed the date to December 31, 2018, after the Assam government sought extension of the last date following demands for it by various local organisations.

Reports appearing in a section of media claimed around 30 lakh people had filed claims for inclusion by Monday evening, when the deadline for the Claims and Objections’ round ended.

The claims and objections were earlier scheduled to be filed in August, but the Supreme Court reprimanded the NRC Coordinator and Registrar General of India for announcing the dates without the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) being approved and directed them to refrain from talking to the media.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being updated under the direct monitoring of Supreme Court.

Railway min wants action MoS PMO’s OSD for article against Piyush Goyal

RM

The Railway ministry has decided to take disciplinary action against Union minister Jitendra Singh’s OSD for casting aspersions against its minister Piyush Goyal and questioning the wisdom of senior government officials in an article, according to official documents.

Kumar is the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Jitendra Singh, who holds multiple portfolios, including minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office and for Development of North Eastern Region.

The article, besides being in bad taste, questions the wisdom of senior functionaries of the level of secretary to the government of India and also casts aspersions on the Minister of Railways (Piyush Goyal), it said.

it is proposed to take up the officer under the Railway Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1968. You would appreciate that a misconduct of this nature and that too in the public domain would send a wrong message all around and encourage indiscipline in the service, the letter dated December 28, 2018, said.

Ashwani Lohani retired as Railway Board chairman on Monday.

Kumar has been vocal in raising concerns related to the alleged wrong functioning of some wings of the Railway Ministry.

The article written by Kumar clearly mentions that all is not good in the Railway Ministry. It needs immediate intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office, said an officer requesting anonymity.

The Railway Ministry has internally transferred another officer for allegedly raising concerns on cadre related issues.

Centre approves renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj

VBK ALLAHABAD 1

A fortnight ahead of the ‘Kumbh Mela’, the Centre has approved the renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj as sought by the Uttar Pradesh government, officials said Tuesday.

The decision came more than two months after the state government, headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, took the decision to rename the historic city as Prayagraj.

The central government has given its consent for renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj about 10 days ago, a home ministry official said.

The ‘Kumbh Mela’ in Prayagraj will start on January 15 on ‘Makar Sankranti’ and will conclude on March 4 on ‘Maha Shivaratri’.

The central government has given consent to the renaming of at least 25 towns and villages across the country in the past one year. The renaming proposal of UP’s Faizabad district as Ayodhya is yet to be received from the state government.

A proposal to rename West Bengal as ‘Bangla’ is pending as the Ministry of External Affairs is understood to have expressed its reservation over the new name, as it sounds similar to Bangladesh. A decision in this regard is expected soon as the general election in the neighbouring country concluded on Sunday.

The Union Home Ministry considers the proposals of name change according to the existing guidelines in consultations with agencies concerned.

It gives its approval to the change of name of any place after taking no-objections from the Ministry of Railways, Department of Posts and Survey of India. These organisations have to confirm that there is no such city, town or village in their records with a name similar to the proposed one.

For changing the name of a village or town or a city, an executive order is needed. The renaming of a state requires amendment of the Constitution with a simple majority in Parliament.

Centre should waive farm loans like Cong did in Rajasthan, MP, Chhattisgarh: Gehlot

AG

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Tuesday said the Centre should waive farm loans across the country like the Congress is has done after coming to power recently in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

He also said a farmers’ rally will be organised in the state soon, and the details will be finalised after a discussion with state Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot.

“The Congress has fulfilled its promise to waive farmers’ loan in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh after coming to power and work on it has begun. The NDA government should also waive farm loans,” Gehlot said.

He alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had waived bad loans worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore of select industrialists when loans of farmers should have been the priority.

“The former UPA government (at the Centre) had waived farmers’ loans worth Rs 72,000 crore and the Congress (governments) in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have also announced to waive loans,” Gehlot told reporters here.

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, he said there are only two persons ruling the country.

“It is not the BJP that is ruling, but two persons, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, are ruling the country. The BJP and the RSS people, too, have understood this. There is an environment of hatred, violence and insensitivity.

“Fake promises were made to the public in the last Lok Sabha elections but things are going to be changed after the (2019 general) elections,” he said.

Gehlot said that Modi will not become the Prime Minister again.

India remains fastest growing economy ahead of China despite ups and downs

india economyIndia remained ahead of China to retain the tag world’s fastest growing large economy withstanding several ups and downs, spike in oil prices and global trade war like situation during 2018.

Indian economy’s roller-coaster ride during the year gone by was best captured by the GDP growth.

In the first quarter of 2018-19 ending June 30, it grew at an impressive 8.2 percent, after 7.7 per cent in the first three months of the year.

Then it slipped to 7.1 per cent in the next quarter ending September 30. Fitch Ratings slashed India’s GDP growth forecast to 7.2 percent for the current fiscal, from 7.8 percent projected in September, citing higher financing cost and reduced credit availability.

Experts, however, expect that moderating growth can force the government to spend more before the next general elections and that could lead to fiscal pressures.

Global factors such as sudden zoom in crude prices (which are now easing), strengthening US dollar, slowing growth in the wake of US-China trade war and the US Federal Reserve hiking interest rate for the fourth time in a year did take the toll on India’s economy.

A good news for the economy was India’s improved ranking on the World Bank’s ‘ease of doing business’ report for the second straight year, jumping 23 places to the 77th position on the back of reforms related to insolvency, taxation and other areas.

Collection of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark in October, after a gap of five months, but again slipped below the mark to Rs 97,637 crore in November. Yet, it was higher than the average monthly collection in the year. Steady increase in average collection raised hopes of monthly collection to remain above Rs 1 lakh crore next year.

Inflation has remained well below the forecasts by the RBI, which targets to keep inflation at 4 percent in the medium term. During the April-October period, industrial output grew 5.6 percent as compared to 2.5 percent in the same period of the previous fiscal. In October, it stood at a 11-month high of 8.1 per cent.

On inflation, Dun & Bradstreet in a report said: Going forward, there are concerns over fiscal slippage due to likely expenditure on pre-poll sops before the Lok Sabha elections next year. The Congress party’s promise of universal farm loan waiver, if it comes to power is likely to force the hand of the BJP government, which has so far stuck to fiscal prudence.

Having witnessed controversy over host of issues like demonetisation, implementation of GST and the government’s handling of banking sector woes, the year also witnessed political slugfest over revised GDP data, which showed that growth during the previous Congress-led UPA’s regime was less than what was estimated earlier.

Recalibrating data of past years, using 2011-12 as the base year instead of 2004-05, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) lowered the country’s economic growth rate during the previous Congress-led UPA’s regime.

India cuts duty on crude, refined palm oil imported from ASEAN

66845 palm oil

The government has cut import duties on crude and refined palm oil effective from Tuesday to comply with preferential trade pacts with Southeast Asian nations.

The import duty on crude palm oil, originating from Malaysia, Indonesia and other members of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been cut to 40 per cent from 44 per cent, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said in a notification.

The duty on import of refined palm oil has been lowered to 45 per cent from 54 per cent, if it is imported from Malaysia, and to 50 per cent, if it is imported from members of the ASEAN, which includes Indonesia.

While India is the largest importer of palm oil, Indonesia is a major producer of edible oils, particularly palm, followed by Malaysia. Palm oil accounts for bulk of the total edible oils imported annually.

The duties have been cut, CBIC said “to provide deeper tariff concessions in respect of specified goods” when imported from ASEAN under the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and Malaysia under the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (IMCECA).

The duty cuts are effective from January 1, 2019.

Kader Khan: Massy actor-writer who engineered commercial cinema’s biggest hits

kaderMore than 300 films on, Kader Khan was always more than the sum of his roles, the consummate multi-hyphenated Bollywood artiste for those who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s on a staple diet of commercial films that either featured him or were penned by him.

Engineer-scriptwriter-actor-dialogue writer, Khan, who died in Toronto at the age of 81 before he could see the dawn of a New Year, was all these and more.

Khan was that rare film personality who was equally important on screen and off screen with about 300 roles as an actor and writing credits in over 250 films.

Before he slipped into the skin of his characters on screen — playing the buffoon, controlling father and villain in a range of films good and bad — Khan took his first tentative steps in Bollywood as a back-end writer giving shape to storylines.

The Kabul-born Pathan started his career as a professor of civil engineering before being pulled into the world of showbiz as a writer.

Khan was famously spotted by screen legend Dilip Kumar while he was performing in a play at his college’s Annual Day function.

It was the era of grand commercial films and the romantic hero of the 1960s and the early 1970s was already ceding ground to the ‘angry young man’, embodied by Amitabh Bachchan.

In 1972, he made his debut as a writer with the Jaya Bhaduri-Randhir Kapoor teen romance “Jawani Diwani”, still remembered for its music and its portrayal of young love.

Khan went on to deliver some of Bollywood’s best written screenplays and whistle-worthy dialogues in blockbuster films such as “Amar Akbar Anthony” and “Shola Aur Shabnam”.

He stepped in to help shape Bachchan’s career after Salim-Javed, who wrote “Zanjeer” and “Sholay”, went their separate ways in 1982.

It was Khan who gave Bachchan some of his career’s biggest hits with memorable dialogues and writing in a series of films — “Sharaabi”, “Lawaaris”, “Muqaddar Ka Sikander”, “Naseeb” and “Agneepath”, for which the megastar won his first Best Actor National Film Award in 1991.

Khan and Bachchan were the thread that tied rivals Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra.

The civil engineer-turned-hit writer also helped cement Govinda’s career with his sharp dialogue and screenplays in “Coolie No 1”, “Raja Babu” and “Saajan Chale Sasural”. The troika of filmmaker David Dhawan, actor Govinda and actor-writer Khan produced a number of hit comedies, including “Hero No 1” and “Dulhe Raja”.

All the while, Khan was also acting in a variety of films.

In 1973, a year after he wrote “Jawani Diwani”, Khan made his acting debut with Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore’s “Daag” in the supporting role of a prosecuting attorney.

He established his presence as an actor with roles in “Dil Diwana”, “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” and “Mr Natwarlal” before evolving as a performer with impeccable comic timing.

There was scarcely any potboiler from the 1990s that did not feature the actor Khan — “Kishen Kanhaiya”, “Bol Radha Bol”, “Aankhen”, “Coolie No 1”, “Hero No 1”, “Dulhe Raja”, the films were many.

As an actor, he will be remembered for striking a balance between comedies and dramas, sometimes exploring the grey side.
