Burnt body of woman found in Thane

thane

A burnt body of an unidentified woman was found at a village in Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.

Some people from Pimplas village in Bhiwandi taluka spotted the body at a field on Monday and informed police.

The local police rushed to the spot and sent the body for postmortem, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said.

A burnt bangle, some hair clips, a pair of slippers and rings were also recovered at some distance from where the body was found, she said.

A case was registered against unidentified culprits under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), she said, adding that a probe was into the incident and to ascertain the victim’s identity.

Nobody thought Cong leaders will get convicted: Modi on riots

Narendra Modi singapore

Highlighting the delay in justice for victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said nobody would have imagined that Congress leaders will get convicted in the case.

Modi was speaking at the Republic Summit in Mumbai.

“Four years ago, nobody ever thought of Congress leaders getting convicted in the 1984 Sikh massacre and that people (victims) would get justice,” the PM said.

Modi’s remarks came a day after senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was convicted and sentenced to life term for “remainder of his natural life” in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Delhi High Court which said the riots were a “crime against humanity” perpetrated by those who enjoyed “political patronage”.

The high court said though it was “undeniable” that it took over three decades to punish the accused in the case, it was important to assure the victims that despite challenges faced by the court, “truth will prevail and justice will be done”.

At the Summit, Modi also took a dig at the Congress over the recent Supreme Court ruling on allegations related to procurement of Rafale jet fighters for the Indian Air Force.

“For the first time it has happened that the country’s top court was approached over some allegations related to corruption. And they got a clear verdict which said whatever work has been done (in the Rafale deal), has been done with transparency and honesty,” Modi said.

Nobody ever thought such thing could take place four years ago (when Congress was in power), Modi said.

“We have a psychology wherein we believe more in corruption allegations against the government. Whether it is malpractice or corruption charges, the psychology has remained same,” Modi said.

“Nobody thought four years ago that one day, Christian Michel, key person in the (AgustaWestland) helicopter scam, would be in India. The dots are being connected,” he said.

Nirupam suspects racket in the ESIC Kamgar Hospital fire breakout

A 05 1

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam visited the ESIC Kamgar Hospital in Andheri on Tuesday after the death toll rose to 8 as massive fire erupted in the hospital a day before.

Nirupam said, “Under the rule of the Congress Party, we had handed over this hospital to the Central Govt in the year 2009. Central Govt wanted to demolish the hospital in order to construct a new building with a medical college. National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC), a Govt firm was given this job by the Central Govt. But the fact that the hospital building has been left untouched since past 10 years is extremely shameful.”

“If big construction firms don’t do their jobs, it is the duty of the Govt to take stringent actions against such firms. We have also found out that the quality of material used in constructing the building in question was not up to the mark which has caused this accident. Such contractors must be blacklisted and actions must be taken against them. The Govt must fix responsibility and book the culprit,” he added.

Sanjay Nirupam further said that the number of fire-related accidents across Mumbai has increased drastically in the past 5-7 years. The main reason behind this rise as stated by Nirupam is the fact that the fire rules, regulations and norms are not followed and implemented properly. “Without the NOC from the fire department, no construction work can take place in Mumbai. Either the fire department officials are giving fake NOC or OC’s are being granted without an NOC from the fire department. Devendra Fadnavis has announced that he will conduct investigation on this matter. However, this entire case stinks of a racket,” he said.

The Mumbai Congress Chief demanded that the hospital staff must be employed in Kandivali’s ESIC hospital on a temporary basis. While Maha CM Devendra Fadnavis has announced compensation worth Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh each for those who have serious injuries and Rs 1 lakh each for those with minor injuries, Sanjay Nirupam has demanded an unbiased and legit investigation in the entire issue.

13 get one-year imprisonment for attacking doctor, PHC in Maha

phc

Thirteen people were awarded one-year imprisonment by a Palghar court for attacking a medical officer and ransacking a primary health centre (PHC) here in Maharashtra.

First Class Judicial Magistrate O J Kulkarni pronounced the sentence on Saturday after convicting the accused under relevant sections of the IPC, the Bombay Police Act and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act.

The prosecution told the court that on November 14, 2014, a 70-year-old man was brought to the PHC at Udhawa village after he complained of severe chest pain.

The doctor concerned was sent a message about the patient. However, the elderly man died before the doctor could reach the PHC.

The angry relatives and some locals later manhandled the medical officer, Dr Sachin Mane, when he tried to pacify them and also ransacked the PHC, the prosecution said.

They also damaged the car of the block development officer who had come there after coming to know about the commotion.

Later, 13 people – Sanjay Bhoye (28), Sandeep Kale (28), Devram Lahange (34), Sunil alias Kamlesh Shinde (24), Deepak Prajapati (27), Abdul Pathan (30), Bhavesh Dhavanekar (31), Anil Gavli (24), Raju Sathe (35), Suresh Gute (19), Anil Gute (23), Anil Chowdhary (29) and Vinayak Pawar (25) – were arrested and a case was registered against them.

Magistrate Kulkrani in his order said the prosecution successfully proved all the charges against the accused.

He also imposed a fine of Rs 500 each on the accused.

HC seeks reply from Centre, jail on Kashmiri separatist’s plea against solitary confinement

Kashmiri seperatist, Asiya Andrabi, Kashmiri, Delhi High Court, Seperatist

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought response of the Centre and the prison authorities on a plea by Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi, arrested in a case of allegedly waging war against the country with support from Pakistan, challenging her solitary confinement.

Besides Andrabi, chief of the banned outfit Dukhtaran-e-Milat, her associates Sofi Fehmeeda and Nahida Nasreen have also approached the high court for being kept in solitary confinement and allegedly being denied basic human rights.

The three accused, arrested earlier this year, are currently lodged in Tihar jail here under judicial custody.

Justice Najmi Waziri sought response of the Union Home Ministry and the Delhi government through additional inspector general (prisons) on the petition and listed the matter for further hearing on January 15.

In the petition filed through advocates Dhruv Tamta and Shariq Iqbal, the three women accused claimed that they were being denied basic human rights including the right to medical treatment and were refused medicines and spectacles.

They sought that they be immediately shifted from solitary confinement to ordinary cells and be provided with proper food and medical relief.

They also sought direction to the jail authorities to allow them to have access to all the facilities which are available to other under trial prisoners.

Andrabi and the two other accused have been chargesheeted by the NIA for allegedly “waging war” against the country by spreading hate speeches using Internet platforms and collecting funds for terror activities.

In its charge sheet, NIA had claimed that a probe revealed that the accused were running a concerted campaign to elicit support from the neighbouring country and accused them of being involved in conspiracy and acts to “severely destabilize the sovereignty and integrity of India”.

The case was registered against the three women in April this year.

Andrabi was earlier in a prison in Srinagar after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court cancelled her bail last month.

The NIA, on directions of the Union Home Ministry, registered a case against them as well as the organisation, which is banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, in April this year.

According to the FIR, the “central government has received information that Andrabi, Fehmeeda and Nasreen were actively running a terrorist organisation named as ‘Dukhtaran-E-Millat’ (DEM) which is proscribed under the First Schedule to the UAPA”.

The agency also said in the FIR that Andrabi and her associates had allegedly spoken, written and also published “visible representations that bring into hatred and contempt apart from exciting disaffection towards the Government of India”.

India erred in Perth by not including spinner: Manjrekar

sm2

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels India made a mistake in not including a front- line spinner in the second Test that Australia won on Tuesday at Perth to square the four match series 1-1.

He said the team management should take the blame for selections which have “back-fired.

“(Australian spinner) Nathon Lyon is a great bowler, so we can’t assume that a (Ravindra) Jadeja would have been as effective (as him).

“But India, I think, made an error in going with four seamers, specially (with) Umesh Yadav and not Bhuvneshwar Kumar,” Manjrekar, an expert with official broadcaster Sony Pictures Networks, told PTI.

“If there was one spinner, (in the team) there’s always cracks and roughs, especially with left-handed batsmen in the opposition, to exploit. Jadeja could have been of more use than the fourth seamer”, he said.

“So, it was a selection error that may have also contributed to India eventually losing the match,” explained the 53-year-old batsman-turned-commentator.

India crumbled in the face of Australia’s remarkable turnaround and crashed to a 146-run defeat in the second Test of the four-game rubber to squander the 1-0 lead gained in the series opener at Adelaide.

The hosts levelled the four-match series after India were bowled out for 140 runs in 56 overs in their second innings on the fifth and final day.

The former right-handed middle order batsman said the team should not have high expectations from Agarwal, who opens for Karnataka.

“Even if you play Mayank Agarwal, we should not have high expectations because it is extremely tough for an Indian batsman to straightaway go into a Test match on an Australian pitch, especially at the top of the order, where the Kookaburra ball does a lot,” he said.

Manjrekar said that India does not have too many options when it comes to selecting openers.

Yuvraj goes unsold, Unadkat millionaire again at IPL auction

yuvi

Out of favour India batsman Yuvraj Singh went unsold, medium-pacer Jaydev Unadkat became a millionaire again with a Rs 8.4 crore bid but the spotlight was firmly on West Indian swashbucklers at the IPL players’ auction in Jaipur on Tuesday.

Unadkat was the costliest at the auction so far, going to Rajasthan Royals, who had bout him for Rs 11.5 crore earlier this year but released him at the end of the season.

Capped Indian players were in demand and so were the West Indians before a 15-minute tea break at the auction.

Unadkat was the sole millionaire so far with the Royals lapping him up him after a bidding battle with KXI, CSK and Delhi Capitals.

However, there were no takers for 37-year-old Yuvraj, who was a sought after player in the IPL for a long time and during his prime, attracted a Rs 16 crore bid.

He entered into the auction with a base price of Rs one crore and could still find a buyer later in the auction if he is among the unsold players brought back into the pool by the franchises.

Yuvraj going unsold was not particularly surprising as he endured a lean run in the 2018 edition after KXIP bought him at a base price of Rs two crore before releasing him in November.

Besides the capped Indians, the West Indians too were in demand with Shimron Hetmyer, Carlos Brathwaite and Nicholas Pooran bagging hefty deals in the first round of bidding.

Spinner Axar Patel (Rs five crore), pacer Mohit Sharma (Rs five crore) and Mohammad Shami (Rs 4.8 crore) were the other names to fetch big bids.

Patel, who made his name at KXIP, was bought by Delhi Capitals after a bidding battle with the Punjab franchise.

The high-profile unsold players were Cheteshwar Pujara, Brendon McCullum and Chris Woakes.

Pete Davidson avoids Ariana Grande at ‘SNL’

American singer-songwriter Ariana Grande may be concerned for her ex-beau and comedian Pete Davidson, but seems like he is not interested in hearing her out.

Grande and Davidson, who called off their engagement in mid-October, could have met over the weekend at Saturday Night Live (SNL) but the comedian “didn’t want to talk to her,” a source revealed to E! News.

Earlier on Saturday, Davidson shared an alarming post on Instagram that caused major tension among many celebrities, friends and fans.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so,” the 25-year-old comedian wrote on his Instagram before deleting his account.

Grande noticed the post and showed concern. She wrote in a since-deleted tweet, “I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

“She tweeted and reached out. She tried to contact him and rushed to see him. But, he didn’t want to talk to her and made it clear. She has been worried sick, but doesn’t know what else she can do,” a source told E! News, noting Grande’s trip to NBC’s studios in midtown Manhattan.

“Pete was alone and in a very dire place when he posted. He has been with friends ever since and they are trying to help him get through this. He doesn’t want to be in contact with Ariana or hear what she has to say,” the source added.

Many other celebrities, including Nicki Minaj, Machine Gun Kelly, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sophia Bush too, reached out to Davidson, offering their support after reading his post.

However, Jon Cryer later took to his Twitter and informed that he heard Davidson was at SNL and accounted for.

Davidson later appeared live on the show to introduce the episode’s musical guest for that day, Miley Cyrus.

The New York City Police also informed E! News earlier that they had performed a wellness check on the ‘SNL’ star.

Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor has been named PETA India’s person of the year for 2018 for her animal advocacy efforts.

A statement from the animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India said Kapoor has taken various actions for animals including praising vegan eating and keeping animal skins out of her handbag line — Rheson.

“Whether she’s enjoying vibrant vegan meals or rallying her fans to do their part to stop animal suffering, Sonam Kapoor never hesitates to help animals any way she can.
