Tension Escalates in Mahayuti: NCP Hits Back at Shiv Sena Minister Sawant Over 'Vomit' Remark 2

The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has expressed strong discontent with Shiv Sena minister Tanaji Sawant’s recent controversial statement. Sawant, during a speech at a party workshop in Dharashiv, claimed that although he sits next to NCP members during Cabinet meetings, he feels the urge to vomit afterward.

NCP’s Chief Spokesman, Umesh Patil, condemned Sawant’s remarks, suggesting that the NCP should reconsider its position within the Mahayuti alliance, especially as Assembly elections approach. Patil argued that the party does not need to remain in the alliance if such disrespect continues.

Adding to the criticism, NCP legislator Amol Mitkari mocked the health minister, suggesting that if Sawant is “vomiting because of being in the Mahayuti,” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde should treat him. This sarcastic response underscores the growing friction between the alliance partners.

Interestingly, neither NCP National President and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar nor state unit chief Sunil Tatkare have responded to Sawant’s inflammatory remarks. This silence has fueled speculation about the internal dynamics within the alliance.

Tanaji Sawant, elected from the Bhum Paranda Assembly constituency as a Shiv Sena (united) candidate in 2019, made his provocative statement while asserting his loyalty to the Shiv Sena. He emphasized that his opposition to Congress and NCP dates back to his student days, and sitting next to NCP members in the Cabinet is intolerable to him.

Umesh Patil’s response was sharp, questioning Sawant’s authority to speak about the NCP and reminding him that his ministerial position is a result of the BJP’s decision to form the Mahayuti alliance. Patil warned that such derogatory comments against the NCP could lead to the party withdrawing from the alliance.

Amol Mitkari also took a jab at Sawant’s past controversial statements, highlighting his history of making outlandish claims, such as blaming crabs for dam failures and misidentifying institutions. Mitkari’s pointed remarks illustrate the ongoing tension and dissatisfaction within the Mahayuti.

This incident is not the first time Sawant has targeted the NCP. During the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, Sawant had criticized Ajit Pawar, then the state finance minister, for not allocating sufficient funds to the Shiv Sena. Sawant has also been known for his confrontational behavior, once telling a senior police officer that he would have to listen to him, even if the Chief Minister does not.

Sawant’s latest remarks and the subsequent backlash from the NCP reveal the underlying discord within the Mahayuti, raising questions about the alliance’s stability as the Assembly elections draw near.

Ramdas Soren Takes Oath as Jharkhand Minister, Champai Soren Joins BJP 4

JMM MLA Ramdas Soren took the oath as a state cabinet minister at Raj Bhawan on Friday. He replaced Champai Soren, who quit the JMM on August 28. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ramdas Soren. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, senior leaders of the JMM-led alliance, and several government officials attended the function.

Meanwhile, Champai Soren is set to join the BJP this afternoon. He said he is joining the BJP to protect the interests of tribals and address their declining population. Speaking to ANI, the former JMM leader said, “I am going to join the BJP after a lot of deliberations. I will protect the existence of tribals and will shoulder all the responsibilities given to me.”

Champai Soren emphasized that his move aims to develop the state and save tribals from Bangladeshi infiltration. Champai Soren became the chief minister of Jharkhand on February 2 after Hemant Soren resigned before being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

On Wednesday, Champai resigned from all posts and the primary membership of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). “Today I resigned from the primary membership and all posts of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Our struggle will continue on the issues of tribals, natives, Dalits, backward people and common people of Jharkhand,” he stated on X, sharing his resignation letter.

Passport Seva Portal to Go Offline for 5 Days: Appointments to Be Rescheduled Amid Maintenance 6

The online portal for passport applications will be shut for the next five days for a maintenance exercise, the government said on Thursday.

No new appointments will be scheduled during this period and appointments booked earlier will be rescheduled.

Those who have already scheduled appointments for Friday, August 30, 2024, will have their appointments rescheduled.

They will be notified of the new dates and times as soon as soon as possible, according to an official statement.

“Passport Seva portal will be down for technical maintenance from August 29, 2024, Thursday 20:00 hours IST to September 2, Monday 06:00 hours IST. The already booked appointments for August 30, 2024 will be suitably rescheduled and informed to applicants,” states a note on the Passport Seva portal.

During this period, the application process, appointment bookings, and other related services will be temporarily disrupted.

Throughout the maintenance period, citizens and various authorities including the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Regional Passport Office, Bureau of Immigration (BOI), India Security Press (ISP), Department of Posts (DoP), and the Police, will be unable to access the system.

The External Affairs Ministry said this was a routine procedure.

“For rescheduling of appointments, we always have contingency plans. The maintenance activity for a public-centric service (like Passport Seva Kendras) is always planned in advance so that no inconvenience is caused to the public. So rescheduling an appointment will not be a challenge,” a senior official said.

The Passport Seva portal is used to book appointments at centres across the country to apply for a new passport or to renew one.

On the day of appointment, applicants must reach the passport centres and provide their documents for verification.

Following this, a police verification takes place and then, the passport reaches the applicant’s address.

Applicants can opt for the regular mode, in which the passport reaches the applicant within 30-45 working days, or the Tatkaal mode in which it reaches within 10 days.

Kangana Ranaut Meets BJP Chief Nadda After Backlash Over Remarks on Farmer's Protest 8

Days after her controversial comments on the farmers’ protest, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut met the party’s national president J.P. Nadda at his residence on Thursday.

Ranaut’s comments have stirred a significant backlash and came at a time when Assembly elections are around the corner in Haryana.

Farmers from Haryana and Punjab held massive protests against the farm laws in 2020 and camped at the borders of Delhi for more than a year. The laws were later withdrawn by the Centre.

The BJP on August 26 distanced itself from its Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut’s remarks on the farmers’ agitation and asked her to refrain from making such statements in the future.

Actor-politician Ranaut stoked a controversy by suggesting that the farmers’ protest could have led to a Bangladesh-like situation in the country had the top leadership not acted strongly.

In a video shared on X, the Mandi MP also alleged that during the farmers’ stir against the three farm laws, “bodies were seen hanging and rapes were taking place”.

The BJP issued a statement on Ranaut’s controversial remarks, saying, “The views expressed by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on the farmers’ movement do not reflect the stance of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

“Ms Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to speak on policy matters on behalf of the party and has not been given permission to do so. The BJP has directed Ms Ranaut to refrain from making such statements in the future,” the statement added.

Her remarks elicited sharp responses from various political parties. The Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and President Mallikarjun Kharge, condemned Ranaut’s statements as a “grave insult” to farmers. Gandhi labelled the comments as “shameful anti-farmer propaganda.”

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged protests in Haryana, accusing the BJP of having an “anti-farmer mindset.”

On Wednesday, Kangana admitted that she was reprimanded by the BJP, over her remarks on the farmer’s protest, and said, “She is looking forward to being more careful with her words and aligning to the party’s policies.”

The single-phase voting for 90 seats of the Haryana Assembly elections will be held on October 1. The results will be declared on October 4.

Malayalam Director Ranjith Seeks Anticipatory Bail Amid Misconduct Allegations by Actress Sreelekha Mitra 10

Renowned Malayalam film director and screenwriter Ranjith has sought anticipatory bail following an FIR filed against him based on a complaint from Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra, alleging “inappropriate behavior.” The Kochi Police Commissioner received the complaint via email late Monday night, leading to the swift registration of the FIR.

Ranjith, who recently resigned as Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, has faced mounting pressure since the release of the Hema Committee report, which exposed widespread sexual abuse within the Malayalam film industry. His resignation on Sunday followed intense scrutiny from the Opposition and extensive media coverage.

Following his resignation, Ranjith became unreachable, and the situation escalated on Monday evening when news broke of Mitra’s complaint. With the Pinarayi Vijayan government under significant pressure, a special police team, including four female IPS officers, has been assembled to investigate the Hema Committee’s findings. The Assistant Inspector General of Police, G. Poonkuzhali, has been tasked with handling Mitra’s complaint specifically.

Mitra’s complaint details an incident in 2009 when she met Ranjith at a Kochi apartment regarding his film Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha. She claims the encounter made her feel “uncomfortable,” alleging that Ranjith touched her with “sexual intent.” She also mentioned informing scriptwriter Joshy Joseph about the incident.

What has drawn significant attention is that Mitra had previously stated she did not intend to file a formal complaint, expressing that she expected only an apology. “I do not want to go down there and submit a complaint because I have worked here. The least I expect is an apology,” Mitra had remarked earlier. Despite this, she has now officially lodged her complaint, bringing the issue to the forefront.

Man Accused of Raping 7-Year-Old in UP, Shot in Leg After Trying to Escape Police Custody 12

A man was shot in the leg after he tried to escape police custody while being taken to a hospital for a check-up in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, Kotwali Deoria police said on Monday.

The person, identified as Saifulla had been arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 7-year-old girl. According to the police, the accused had complained of feeling sick in custody. The Sadar Kotwali police personnel were taking him to the hospital for a checkup and treatment after his complaint.

However, it was reported that the accused managed to escape the police during transportation, after which multiple search teams were launched for him. “The accused had been arrested by the Kotwali police yesterday morning. After he complained of feeling sick, he was transported to the hospital for a check-up. During the transportation, the accused was able to push away and evade the police, escaping custody,” said ASP Dipendra Nath of Kotwali Deoria Police.

According to the local police, after the person managed to escape, three search teams were formed. The accused was found late in the night at the Sonughat crossing and he allegedly opened fire at the search team. During the encounter, he was shot in his right leg. “The accused was found at the Sonughat crossing late in the night, and during an encounter between the arrested and the police, he was shot in his leg”, added ASP Nath.

A spokesperson for the UP BJP, Prashant Umrao, posted on X, “Mohammad Shafiullah, who brutally raped a girl in Deoria, became one-legged after being caught in Operation Langda while running away from the police.”

The person has been admitted to a medical college for treatment, where he is under supervision and is being monitored by the police too.

Maharashtra Bandh: “HC Order Against Bandh Is Slap for Opposition, Will Implement the Directive”: CM Shinde

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said the Bombay High Court’s order restraining any person or party from calling for a Maharashtra bandh over the Badlapur incident was a “slap” for the opposition, and the government will implement the directive.

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP), and Congress has called for a bandh on Saturday.

But the high court, in a directive in response to petitions challenging the call for a general strike, restrained any person or political party from issuing such a call, and asked the state government to take preventive steps.

Speaking at a gathering to launch the ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme, Shinde said the Badlapur incident—where two kindergarten girls were allegedly sexually assaulted in the school washroom—was a “blot on humanity.”

“It also impacted the happiness we derived from transferring Rs 1500 into the accounts of beneficiary women under the Laadki Bahin scheme. But the opposition has been politicising the incident and maligning this scheme,” he said.

The high court’s order was “a slap across the opposition’s face,” Shinde said, adding that his government will implement the directive.

The accused in the Badlapur case was booked under stringent provisions of the law, and the government will seek capital punishment for him, the CM said.

The opposition is doing politics but the government is committed to keeping ‘bahin’ (sisters/women) in the state safe, he said.

The opposition should not take people for granted, the chief minister said, and he took a veiled swipe at Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray by adding that some people were so eager to get the CM’s post that they were indulging in such politics.

This was perverse, Shinde said.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in his speech at the function, also slammed the opposition for calling for a bandh.

“This is for politics. You did not take a stand against the Mamata Banerjee government over the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. But here you are calling for a bandh for your selfish interests,” said Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio.

Uddhav Thackeray Warns of Hitting Streets if Cases Against Badlapur Protesters Not Withdrawn 15

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded the withdrawal of cases against those who had protested in Badlapur against the alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls, warning that the opposition would have to hit the streets if it is not done.

Addressing a news conference, Thackeray said the August 24 ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ called by the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is not political but against “perversion” and urged people cutting across caste and religion to participate in it.

He claimed the bandh would be observed on behalf of the people of the state.

Slamming the Eknath Shinde government’s action over the Badlapur protest, Thackeray said, “Arrests are still taking place in Badlapur. The cases against the protesters must be withdrawn or else we have to hit the streets.”

A massive protest rocked Badlapur town in Thane district on Tuesday after thousands of people hit the streets and spilled onto railway tracks to protest the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls by a male attendant at a local school.

At least 25 police personnel were injured in the incidents of stone-pelting at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during the protest.

Police have arrested 72 persons in connection with the violence during the stir.

The accused was arrested on August 17. He has been sent to police custody till August 26.

Thackeray said the bandh should be “strictly” followed till 2 pm, ensuring that emergency services remain operational.

He said people are entitled to express their anger not just during elections.

When all roads are shut, justice is sought in the court of people, he said.

The bandh is to make the government realise that the system should discharge its duties diligently.

The former chief minister said even the Bombay High Court, which has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged sexual assault of the young girls in Badlapur, has slammed the government.

During a hearing on the matter on Thursday, the HC said, “Unless there is a strong public outburst, the machinery won’t move.”

Dr. Tawde, Bhave, and Punalekar Acquitted; Vartak Questions Anti-Superstition Committee's Accountability 17

In a significant development on May 10, 2024, a court acquitted three individuals, including Dr. Virendra Singh Tawde, Vikram Bhave of Sanatan Sanstha, and Advocate Sanjeev Punalekar, of all charges related to the murders of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. The trio, who had been imprisoned for years under allegations of involvement in the high-profile cases, were found innocent by the judiciary.

The acquittal has sparked fresh demands for accountability from Sanatan Sanstha, a Hindu organization that has consistently denied any involvement in the murders. Speaking after the verdict, Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson Abhay Vartak questioned whether those who accused the organization would now issue an apology. Vartak criticized what he described as a deliberate attempt by certain groups to malign Sanatan Sanstha and Hinduism at large, calling for action against the responsible authorities.

At a press conference, Advocate Sanjeev Punalekar and Dr. Amit Thadani also addressed the broader implications of the case. They highlighted the role of misinformation in targeting Hindutva organizations and emphasized the need for Hindu unity in the face of what they termed as “false narratives.”

Vartak accused the Anti-Superstition Committee and so-called “Urban Naxalites” of conspiring to falsely accuse Sanatan Sanstha. He noted that despite the violent attacks during the August 11, 2012, riots at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, no strict action has been taken against the perpetrators, while the same groups are active in filing hate speech cases against Hindutva leaders.

Advocate Punalekar, representing the Mumbai High Court, criticized communists for allegedly portraying themselves as intellectuals and misleading the public. He accused them of glorifying “fake heroes” and discrediting true national icons, citing examples like Nikhil Wagle and Asim Sarode. Punalekar further claimed that certain NGOs, along with elements from the film industry, journalists, and police, are part of a larger agenda to undermine Hindu organizations.

Dr. Amit Thadani, a noted surgeon and author, condemned the mishandling of the Dabholkar murder investigation, which he believes focused unjustly on implicating Hindutva groups. Dr. Thadani, who has penned a book titled Dabholkar-Pansare Murder: Mysteries of the Investigation?, argued that the inquiry ignored other potential motives, such as financial disputes, in favor of targeting Hindu organizations.

Let Me Remind Eknath Shinde, Once He Was True Shiv Sainik

Let Me Remind Eknath Shinde, Once He Was True Shiv Sainik 19

I was born and raised in Mumbai, and we never heard of incidents like rape or violence against women in this city because Shiv Sena’s presence acted as a strong deterrent. Women could safely travel alone, even at midnight, making Mumbai one of the safest cities for them. However, since Balasaheb’s demise and Eknath Shinde’s political maneuvers, the unity of the Shiv Sena has crumbled. The division of Shiv Sainiks and Shinde’s focus on the CM chair has led to a rise in crime. Women in Maharashtra long for the days when Mumbai was truly safe for them. When Balasaheb Thackeray was alive, Shiv Sena was credited with making Mumbai a safer place for women. Leaders like Anand Dighe were known for personally helping women facing domestic abuse and harassment, with Shiv Sena cadres actively working to maintain safety. Unfortunately, present CM Eknath Shinde claimed to follow in the footsteps of Dighe and Balasaheb but lost his narrative to vivacious political ambitions. Why is there a rise in crimes against women, and why isn’t the same level of protection being provided?

If Anand Dighe or Balasaheb Thackeray were alive today, they would have taken severe action against Eknath Shinde for failing to deliver justice to the minor victim, who was not only molested but also repeatedly threatened by the accused. Unfortunately, under the leadership of Shinde, crimes against women have increased, and he lacks the courage to address this critical issue, even though he once boldly took action against dance bars to protect families. The question of what has changed under current leadership is a poignant one, especially when compared to the legacy of past leaders who prioritized women’s safety. During Balasaheb Thackeray’s leadership, Shiv Sena was known for creating a strong deterrent against crimes like rape and violence, with the city being one of the safest for women, even at night. The political divisions and changes in leadership, especially under Eknath Shinde, have led to a perceived weakening of this protective framework. Many feel that the current leadership is not upholding the legacy of prioritizing women’s safety as effectively as before, leading to an increase in such crimes.

The Badlapur rape case has deeply shocked the nation, yet the government’s response appears focused on arresting those who protest for justice rather than addressing the root issue. This has led to widespread frustration, as many believe the government is more concerned with preserving its image and making false claims rather than taking meaningful action to ensure justice for the victim. The public’s demand for accountability and safety remains unmet, further fueling the outrage.

On August 13, as a routing grandfather, he dropped his 3-year-old granddaughter off at school. He might have never thought that his granddaughter would fall victim to a beast. When grandfather went to the school to pick up his granddaughter, her classmate’s father informed him that his daughter told him about a ‘Dada’ (elder brother in Marathi) touching her private parts. She also revealed that ‘Dada also used to remove her clothes and did not return’. The classmate’s father had met the school teacher regarding the same and had decided on a medical checkup. This detail reveals that the classmate was a victim of sexual abuse too. The grandfather got suspicious and took the girl to a hospital. The medical report revealed ‘Hymen Open 1 cm CMC ERYTHEMA’. Shocked and pained, the grandfather telephoned the girl’s parents and called them to Badlapur. After the mother confirmed that her 3-year-old 10-month-old daughter was a victim of sexual abuse, she rushed to the police station to register a case. The police refused to register a case, and then Badlapur people took to the street to get the case registered. The Badlapur citizens called for a citywide strike after the police delayed registering the FIR. The victim’s parents had to wait 12 hours to file the case.

The country was yet to come to terms with the horrific Kolkata medico rape and murder, Badlapur sexual assault case of two minor girls by a school sweeper has again sent another shockwave all across India. As per the FIR, the young parents stay in Kalyan and the victim’s permanent address is also her parent’s residential address in Kalyan. However, the young parents in June 2023 decided to keep their daughter with her grandparents. The victim, who is 3 years and 10-months old as per the FIR, was admitted to a Badlapur school’s kindergarten in June 2024. From the last week of June, the girl was regularly attending her school. But the school never bothered to keep an eye on their staff; the sweeper took advantage of the school’s ill management and continued to sexually abuse kids.

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance called for a Maharashtra Bandh (strike). As per reports, Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, who once created unrest in Maharashtra to destabilize the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, is now representing the state government, calling the bandh illegal and the government has asked the court to take strict action against the people participating in the strike. MVA leaders Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar have appealed to the citizens of Maharashtra to participate in the strike overwhelmingly demanding justice for women. The MVA leaders also said that the bandh is demanding the protection of women amid the rising cases of sexual assault and that there is no political agenda. The bandh will continue till 2 pm. Massive protests against the sexual assault of two minor girls in Badlapur. MVA took an aggressive stand and called for a Maharashtra Bandh on Saturday, August 24. Let’s see how Maharashtra reacts to this whole episode. It would also be interesting to watch if Eknath Shinde realized that he is still more of a Shiv Sainik than the dummy of the BJP.
