Right-wingers raise question on History Textbooks

Right wingers raise question on History Textbooks Lead AV

After the whole episode of Hindutva organisations and BJP protesting against the Karnataka government’s decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan, now, the right-wingers have pointed out the flaws in the Indian History school textbooks that according to them consciously play down the Indian subcontinent emperors and glorify the dynasty and the emperors of invader forces like Mughals who later conquered the land. While a large part of the right-wingers have slammed the post-independence Indian government and the Marxist historians for masterminding politically correct history textbooks to appease the Muslim community and protect their sentiments, the other part pointed out the lack of scripted history as the reason.

The over-glorification of the foreign invaders in the History school textbooks is an old debate topic. However, the issue took a fresh upswing with the Karnataka government celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, a ruler in the 18th century, Mysore whose name is remembered as the “Tiger of Mysore” in Karnataka formal education. Tipu Sultan is celebrated as a hero in Kannada poems or school celebrations. His fight against the British, his sacrifices, and politics are supremely highlighted while historians see him as a controversial figure of communal politics.

BJP spokesperson Avdhut Wagh asserted, “The ancient history of India revolves around Ramayana and Mahabharata. How can we forget great leaders like Morya, Samrat Ashok, the king Bharat on whose name our country is named! Besides that, we cannot neglect the history of the Mughal era but Indian history is far beyond that.”

He went on saying, “While writing the history, the other side of the Mughals should be taken into consideration stating how they destroyed the Indian culture and how cruel they were! History textbooks have details of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in just a few lines while Mughal emperors are described in various chapters. Moreover, any particular leader’s contribution should not be restricted to a state and it should be included in the textbooks nationwide.”

Before the Mughal invasion of 1526, the north of the subcontinent was divided into several independent Hindu and Muslim kingdoms. There are many historians who too agreed that regional emperors of India have very less emphasis on their empire and biography in Indian textbooks.

Keeping the tone similar, the BJP and the right-wingers have called attention to how anti-heroes are given more prominence than the heroes of the land. They further regretted how even the history of the Queen of Jhansi Lakshmibai, who was associated with early resistance against the British rule in India and played an important role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, has got the minimum of presence in other Indian state school books and a bit more than that it the Uttar Pradesh textbooks. The dissenters also showed concern that there is hardly a few around us who have information regarding the forefathers’ of the Hindu rulers while they are well-versed with the same of the Muslim invader rulers. The name of Bappa Rawal too found its place. Rawal was one of the most powerful and famous rulers of the Mewar Dynasty. In the 8th century, Arab Muslims started attacking India within a few decades of the birth of Islam, which was basically an extension of invasion of Persia. Rawal played an important role in the Battle of Rajasthan, a series of wars fought in the 8th century AD between the regional rulers of North-Western India and the Arabs of Sindh, in which the regional Indian rulers inflicted a resounding defeat on the invading Arabs.

Justice (retired) B.G. Kolse-Patil said, “I want to ask the BJP leaders to name the Hindu leaders who had worked for the peace and betterment of humanity. Hindu leaders like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka have a particular area dedicated to the history. If the Mughals are called invaders, then there must be a check in the past that who had earlier invited them to restrict the Hindu culture. They have only allowed the Mughals to rule us for years. I don’t think that portraying Hindu leaders in our textbooks is not given a prominence. Moreover, Aurangzeb has written much about the great ruling era of Shivaji Maharaj which even no other Hindu leader has spoken about. The true history has been fabricated; hence, people are not aware of the actual Indian history here.”

A large part of India was ruled by the Mughals who produced remarkable rulers and left behind great architectural structures as well a significant amount of literature to ensure their imprint on the Indian subcontinent. At the same time, there were equally great Hindu, Sikh rulers in the Indian subcontinent, who gave Mughals a tough time. However, their history is still unknown to the common public of India and somewhere now, people have woken up to make changes and adhere to the History of the Hindu leaders.

BJP spokesperson Shivray Kulkarni explained, “Apart from the Mughals, there are several leaders and fighters who have contributed for the welfare of the nation; why their names are not mentioned prominently in the Indian history textbooks for the students to learn? Our country has a history of great battles which should be given proper emphasis in the textbooks.”

Army sepoy held following hoax call about ISI agents in Nagpur

ISIS AV

Military Intelligence has detained an Army sepoy after a hoax call about arrest of ISI agents in Nagpur city of Maharashtra was allegedly made from his mobile phone, police sources said on Wednesday.

Ganeshpeth police here have registered a case under IPC sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) in the matter, an official said.

On November 8, Ganeshpeth police received a call from a person who said he was a major with Military Intelligence’s Mumbai unit, and they had nabbed two agents of ISI, the Pakistani spy agency, from Nagpur city.

Police later found that no such operation had been carried out by MI or any other agency in the city.

The number from which the call was received was registered in the name of Pankaj Yergude, a sepoy posted in the Army’s Supply Core in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

A senior police official said that MI’s Himachal Pradesh unit took Yergude in custody for interrogation on Tuesday.

He reportedly denied any knowledge about the call made from his phone, the official said.

Yergude hails from Bhadravati town in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, said inspector Sunil Gangurde.

Nagpur police commissioner Dr B K Upadhyay said the police will request the Army to hand over Yergude’s custody for further probe.

Maratha reservation issue: State panel to submit report tomorrow

Maratha Kranti Morcha AV

The Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission will submit its observation on the eligibility of the Maratha community for reservation in education and jobs to the state government on Thursday.

The report will further be submitted to the Bombay High Court, based on which a decision will be taken on the issue.

The upper caste Maratha community, constituting 33% of the caste-conscious state, had been agitating since last year for demanding reservation in jobs and education in the aftermath of the agrarian crisis in the state.

The protests took a violent turn on August 9 and as many as 194 people were arrested by the Pune Police for rioting and arson.

Apart from demanding a decision on their demands at the earliest, the community members sought a waiver of farmer loans, justice in Kopardi rape case and a solution to unemployment.

BJP welcomes Uddhav’s decision to visit Ayodhya: Danve

Raosaheb Danve AV

Maharashtra BJP president Raosaheb Danve Wednesday said his party welcomed Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray’s decision to visit Ayodhya later this month.

He was talking to reporters here as part of his tour of Thane, Kalyan and Bhiwandi to take stock of the party’s preparedness for the Lok Sabha elections next year.

Replying to a query whether the Sena has hijacked the Ram temple issue from the BJP, Danve said, “Nobody can hijack issues. They do their party’s work and we do ours…We welcome Uddhav Thackeray’s decision to visit Ayodhya.”

Thackeray had announced in his party’s Vijayadashmi rally in Mumbai that he would visit Ayodhya on November 25 and “question” Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the temple construction issue.

Replying to a query related to BJP MLA Anil Gote, who has announced his resignation as member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly as well as from the BJP, alleging that “criminals” were being inducted into the party, Danve said such things happen during polls.

“Such things are expected during elections, but no one should take these matters seriously,” he said.

According to him, the decision of selecting candidates rested with the party’s Parliamentary Board. “But we do hear local leaders and elected representatives,” he said.

Gote, who represents the Dhule Assembly seat in Maharashtra, said on Monday that he would tender his resignation next week. He has been opposing induction of some NCP leaders into the BJP.

When asked about Sena’s constant criticism of the BJP despite sharing power with it, Danve said his party’s stand has always been to take all the NDA allies along.

On Sena’s demand to name the Mumbai-Nagpur Super Communication Expressway, also known as the ‘Samruddhi Corridor’, after party’s late supremo Bal Thackeray, he said, “It will be decided by the government after taking due consent from the leaders of both the parties.”

He added that during his recent tour to Nagpur, Jalna, Aurangabad and other Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, he found that satisfactory work had been done by booth level party workers.

He said he was likely to complete the tour of all the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra soon and carry out a review by mid December.

Danve said the party will expand its base across all the Lok Sabha constituencies. “Our endeavour is to get the NDA candidate elected in all the constituencies.

Woman abuses Air India crew on Mumbai-London flight after being denied alcohol; held

Woman abuses Air India crew AV

A business class passenger verbally abused an Air India crew member after she was denied extra alcohol on-board a London-bound flight from here, an airline official said on Wednesday.

The woman, a foreigner allegedly manhandled a cabin crew member in an inebriated state, prompting the airline to file a police case, the official said.

The incident took place on November 10 when the Air India flight AI-131 was on way to London from Mumbai.

In a video clip recorded by a cabin crew member, the woman can be heard using expletives several times.

Air India filed an FIR against the passenger and she was taken into custody on landing at London’s Heathrow airport, the official said.

“The woman turned unruly as the cabin crew denied her serving more liquor. She hurled abuse and manhandled the crew,” the official said.

In the vidoe clip which has gone viral on social media, the woman can be heard saying, “I am working for all your people…for you, an international criminal lawyer. Dont get any money for it, by the way. But you cant give me a … glass of wine, is that correct?”

The cabin crew informed the flight commander about the unruly behaviour of the passenger on board and he instructed the crew not to serve her more drinks, the official said.

The civil aviation ministry guidelines issued in September 2017 provide for barring a passenger indulging in unruly behaviour from flying for a period ranging from three months to lifetime, the official said.

Aviation regulator DGCA is supposed to maintain the record of all such blacklisted passengers, he said, adding the quantum of punishment is based on the severity of the offence, which has been divided into three categories.

“The no-fly list is applicable only if the incident is inside an aircraft which could adversely affect the safety of the plane and its occupants.

‘The facts are not right’: Federer fumes over scheduling row

Roger Federer AV

Roger Federer has hit back at claims he gets preferential treatment from tennis tournaments due to his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

Federer was responding to controversial comments from French veteran Julien Benneteau, who said the 20-Grand Slam champion was able to use his reputation to secure favourable scheduling.

Benneteau offered Federer’s matches at the last two Australian Opens as evidence, suggesting the Swiss star was granted his preference to play in the evening session to avoid the blistering Melbourne heat.

“Over the last two Australian Opens, he played 14 matches, because he was champion and finalist. And he played 12 or 13 of them in the night session,” Benneteau told France’s RMC Sport recently.

On the same day Federer played Jan-Lennard Struff, Novak Djokovic played Gael Monfils.

“Any tournament director would put Djokovic-Monfils on the night session at 7:30pm, right? But no. They played at 2:30pm, in 104 degrees. And Federer-Struff played at night.

“It’s normal that he gets preferential treatment, with everything he’s done. But, in some tournaments, there are big differences in the conditions. He has no idea what that’s like.”

But Federer was supported by world number one Novak Djokovic on Monday, with his rival suggesting the six-time Australian Open winner had actually earned the right to “special treatment” for all the good he has done for the sport.

Sindhu, Sameer enter second round of Hong Kong Open

PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma AV

Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma notched up contrasting wins on Wednesday to progress to the second round of the Hong Kong Open World Tour Super 500 tournament, here.

Sindhu, seeded third, continued her consistent run as she recovered from a mid-game slump to surpass Thailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol 21-15 13-21 21-17 in the opening round which lasted a little over an hour.

It was Sindhu’s fourth win over the Thai player.

Sindhu, who won three major silver medals this season — Commonwealth Games, World Championship and Asian Games — will take on Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun next.

The 23-year-old from Hyderabad has a superior 8-5 head-to-head record against the Korean.

In the men’s singles, Sameer, who clinched the Swiss Open and Hyderabad Open this year, saw off another Thai Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-17 21-14 to set up a clash with China’s Olympic champion Chen Long.

However, former Singapore Open champion B Sai Praneeth was stunned by Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand in a 62-minute opener.

Praneeth had a 3-0 record against Khosit ahead of the match but it didn’t matter as he went down fighting 21-16 11-21 15-21 to bow out of the tournament.

Australia will be bigger challenge for Indian pace attack: Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra AV

Indian pace attack has been a revelation this year during overseas tours but tougher conditions in Australia will make it a very challenging series for the fast bowlers, reckons former speedster Ashish Nehra.

Nehra, who was a part of the Indian squad that drew 1-1 during the 2003-04 series in Australia, felt the current attack “has the ability” to succeed but conditions will be different than what they got in England and South Africa.

“Australian team is going through a massive restructuring and this is India’s best chance without doubt. We have the bowling attack to beat them. But we need to be mindful that conditions will be much tougher Down Under where the wickets will be flat and weather would be on warmer side,” the 39-year-old Nehra told agencies in an interview.

“In Australia, you will get extra bounce but there will only be lateral movement till the kookaburra seam doesn’t flatten. It won’t be like England where the ball swings all day. Once you get adjusted to the bounce, batsmen can hit you all day,” said Nehra, who has played 17 Tests and 120 ODIs apart from 27 Twenty20 Internationals.

According to Nehra, it will be Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and one between Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, who will be starting in Adelaide.

“I don’t see Bhuvi starting in the first Test at least. He can struggle a bit with the old kookaburra as it will neither swing or seam unlike Dukes or SG Test,” Nehra opined.

The former left-arm seamer said that Mohammed Shami’s fitness in England impressed him a lot.

“What I liked was Shami bowling with fire in the second innings of the fifth Test at the Oval. Now that takes a lot of doing. I hope he can keep it up in Australia also if he starts from the first Test,” he observed.

Ishant Sharma’s stamina will also be required as his fitness is what makes him “special”, said his former state and national team team colleague.

It will be Bumrah’s first Test tour of Australia and Nehra is confident that Australians will find it difficult to play him.

Rafale deal: SC reserves order on pleas seeking court-monitored probe

Supreme Court Rafeal Deal AV

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on pleas seeking court-monitored probe in the procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S.K. Kaul and K.M. Joseph concluded the arguments advanced by various parties which have also sought registration of FIR in connection with the alleged irregularities in the deal.

Earlier in the day, the Centre had defended the secrecy clause related to the pricing of the 36 Rafale fighter jets in the Supreme Court and said it cannot divulge details of the deal.

These matters are for the experts to deal with and “we have been saying that even Parliament has not been told about the complete cost of jets”, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

The top law officer said that the Centre has given in a sealed cover the complete details of the Rafale jets, the weapons to be fitted on the aircraft and other requirements.

The Centre on Monday had submitted to the apex court in a sealed cover, the pricing details of the Rafale jets.

Refusing to divulge details on the pricing aspect, Venugopal said he would not be able to assist the court further on the pricing issue.

“I decided not to peruse it myself as in a case of any leak, my office would be held responsible,” he said.

While the Centre was making a submission on the issue of pricing, the bench, also comprising justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, said any discussion on pricing of the Rafale fighter jets can only take place if the facts on the deal are allowed to come in the public domain.

The top court told the attorney general that without bringing the facts in public domain, there was no question of any debate on the pricing of the planes.

However, the bench clarified to the law officer that any discussion on price will be considered if it thinks that it should come in the public domain.

India signed an agreement with France for the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter aircraft in a fly-away condition as part of the upgrading process of the Indian Air Force equipment.

The estimated cost of the deal is Rs 58,000 crore. The Rafale fighter is a twin-engine Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) manufactured by French aerospace company Dassault Aviation.

Congress encouraged corruption, Naxalism: Yogi Adityanath

Yogi Adityanath AV

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Wednesday accused Congress of “encouraging corruption, Naxalism, terrorism and misrule” during its rule in the country.

Addressing a campaign rally for the second phase of Assembly polls here, Adityanath also accused Congress of “insulting martyrdom” of security forces engaged in anti-Naxal operations by terming Maoists as “revolutionaries”.

“Congress has done nothing except divide the society on the basis of caste, region, religion, and language, he said.

During its 55-year rule in the country, Congress always encouraged poverty, misrule, terrorism, Naxalism, and corruption, he said.

Without naming UP Congress chief Raj Babbar, Adityanath said, “a leader of UP Congress had termed Naxals as revolutionaries which is an insult to the martyrdom of security forces fighting Maoists”.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP with a slogan of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas has launched public welfare schemes for the inclusive development of people belonging to all sections of society, he said.

During the Congress rule, mining and forest mafia, cattle trafficking and Naxalism were “at an all-time high” in Chhattisgarh but the BJP government contained all these ills, he said.

“Earlier, Rs 100 released from Delhi became Rs 10 on reaching people because the remaining Rs 90 was embezzled by dalals (middlemen) of Congress. But now it has changed and Rs 100 released by the Modi government remains Rs 100 when the amount reaches people through digital payment mode,” he said.

Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan were considered as Bimaru states during the Congress rule, he said. Now, these states are considered among the developed states after BJP government came to power there, he said.
