Rape in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Has Shaken the Nation 2

The tragic incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has indeed shocked the nation. A 31-year-old second-year postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead under horrific circumstances, which has sparked widespread outrage and concern for the safety of healthcare professionals, especially women, within medical institutions.

The doctor had finished her duty late at night and chose to rest in the seminar hall of the hospital due to the unavailability of space elsewhere. Tragically, it was in this place that she was allegedly raped and murdered. Her body was discovered the following morning, partially undressed, which indicated the brutal nature of the crime.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of medical professionals within hospital premises, highlighting the vulnerabilities that female healthcare workers face. The fact that such a heinous act could occur within a well-known medical institution has intensified the public’s call for justice and immediate action.

Authorities are under immense pressure to investigate the case thoroughly, identify and apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future. The medical community, alongside the general public, is demanding that the government and hospital administrations take decisive measures to address safety concerns and protect those working in the healthcare sector.

This incident underscores the need for enhanced security measures in workplaces, especially in healthcare settings where professionals are often required to work late hours and in isolated areas. The nation is closely watching as the investigation unfolds, with a strong call for justice and systemic changes to ensure the safety of all healthcare workers.

The horrific crime at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, where a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly gang-raped and murdered, has exposed significant flaws in the security measures within hospital premises. The autopsy report, which revealed the presence of 151 mg of semen from the victim, strongly suggests that multiple individuals were involved in the crime, leading to widespread speculation about a gang rape occurring in broad daylight.

This incident has ignited protests and work stoppages among the hospital’s postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctors, who have demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved. The student community and medical professionals have organized rallies, and opposition leaders have called for an independent, magistrate-led investigation to ensure transparency and justice.

In response, the police arrested Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer, based on evidence that included a torn Bluetooth earphone found at the crime scene. Roy’s access to the hospital and previous allegations of inappropriate behavior have raised serious concerns about his involvement and the broader issue of security lapses at the hospital.

The incident also led to substantial controversy surrounding Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former head of RG Kar Medical College, who was criticized for his inadequate response to the case and perceived victim-blaming comments. Though initially asked to go on leave, he was controversially reinstated as the Principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital within 24 hours, further fueling public outrage.

In light of this tragedy, the National Medical Commission has issued an advisory urging medical institutions to enhance security measures, including the implementation of video surveillance and the deployment of additional security personnel. This incident also highlights the broader issue of sexual violence in India, where an average of 86 rape cases were reported daily in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Despite legal reforms, including harsher sentencing for rapists and the criminalization of acts such as stalking and voyeurism, many women still refrain from reporting sexual crimes due to the societal stigma attached to victimhood in India’s patriarchal society.

The case continues to be under investigation, and there is a strong public demand for justice to be served swiftly and effectively. The case is now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which took over on Tuesday after the High Court order.

As many as 3,800 bamboo and 36 projector lights worth more than Rs 50 lakh installed on Bhakti Path and Ram Path, located in a high-security area in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, were allegedly stolen, the police said.

“As many as 6,400 bamboo lights were installed on Rampath and 96 projector lights were installed on Bhakti Path. Till March 19, all the lights were there but after an inspection on May 9, it was found that some lights were missing.”

An FIR was lodged at Ram Janmabhoomi police station following a complaint on August 9 from a representative of the firm—Yash Enterprises and Krishna Automobiles—which set up the lights under a contract awarded by the Ayodhya Development Authority, they said on Tuesday.

“Till now, around 3,800 bamboo lights and 36 projector lights have been stolen by some unknown thieves,” Shekhar Sharma, a representative of the firm, said in the complaint.

According to the FIR, the firm became aware of the theft in May but filed the complaint on August 9.

The police said that an FIR has been registered in the matter and a probe is underway.

Ayodhya was refurbished under a major project ahead of the January 22 Ram temple consecration ceremony in the holy city.

Excise Policy Case: Supreme Court to Hear Delhi CM Kejriwal's Bail Plea Today 6

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday hear a plea filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking release from jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, in which he is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will take up Kejriwal’s two petitions, which have separately challenged the August 5 decision of the Delhi High Court affirming his arrest and denying him bail.

In his plea, filed two days after the top court granted bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in a related probe by CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief has challenged his arrest and subsequent remand orders, while also pressing for bail.

Kejriwal, in the petitions filed on Monday, assailed the Delhi High Court’s August 5 judgment, which ruled that his arrest was neither illegal nor without justifiable grounds because CBI presented “evidently enough evidence” to warrant his detention and remand.

His plea relied heavily on the Sisodia verdict, in which the top court held that the former Deputy CM’s long incarceration of 17 months and his continued detention in a case where there was no hope of trial ending anytime soon impinged on his fundamental right to liberty and speedy trial under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The AAP Chief’s petition argued that the grounds on which the court found it appropriate to release Sisodia on bail should equally apply to him.

Kejriwal’s petition highlighted the top court’s observations in the Sisodia case that prolonged incarceration without trial could amount to a violation of fundamental rights, particularly when the investigation is largely complete and the accused has deep roots in society, reducing the risk of absconding.

Kejriwal, through his plea, argued that he meets these criteria, much like Sisodia, and should therefore be granted bail on similar grounds.

The petition gains significance in light of the Assembly elections in Delhi early next year.

As the incumbent CM and the party’s most prominent leader, Kejriwal’s presence is crucial for the AAP’s campaign strategy.

With Kejriwal at the helm, the AAP has consistently positioned itself as a champion of Delhi’s governance, focussing on issues such as education, healthcare, and affordable water and power.

Kejriwal has been in custody since March 21 following his arrest by ED, apart from a 21-day interim bail in May granted by the apex court for Lok Sabha election campaigning.

On July 12, the apex court granted him interim bail in the ED case, acknowledging that he had spent over 90 days in incarceration. Still, he continued to remain in custody due to his arrest by CBI on June 26 in the same matter.

The case against the CM stems from allegations of irregularities in Delhi’s now-scrapped excise policy of 2021-22, which CBI began probing following a recommendation by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor in July 2022.

Kejriwal was the third AAP leader arrested in this connection. Sisodia was incarcerated since February 2023 before he was released on August 9, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was granted bail by the top court in April, after six months of custody.

Ajit Pawar Accepts 'Mistake Was Made' in Fielding Wife Against Sister in Lok Sabha Polls 8

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has said he made a mistake by fielding his wife Sunetra Pawar against his cousin Supriya Sule in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

One should not allow politics to enter home, Pawar, who is currently on a statewide ‘Jan Samman Yatra’, told Marathi news channel Jai Maharashtra.

As part of his mass outreach programme ahead of the state assembly polls, the deputy CM has been promoting the government’s ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana’, aimed at providing financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per month to women.

In the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, Sunetra Pawar unsuccessfully contested the election from Baramati seat against sitting NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, daughter of Ajit Pawar’s uncle Sharad Pawar.

Sunetra Pawar was later elected to the Rajya Sabha.

In July last year, Ajit Pawar and a number of other MLAs joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government, leading to a split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founded Sharad Pawar.

The Election Commission later declared the Ajit-led group as the real NCP.

“I love all my sisters. One shouldn’t allow politics to enter homes. I made a mistake in fielding Sunetra against my sister. This shouldn’t have happened. But the parliamentary board (of NCP) made a decision. Now I feel it was wrong,” Ajit Pawar said.

Asked if he will visit his cousin on Raksha Bandhan next week, the NCP leader said he is currently on a tour and if he and his sisters are at one place that day, he would surely meet them.

The deputy CM said he has decided to speak only on development and welfare schemes for farmers, women, and youth and not respond to criticism against him.

Ajit Pawar also said Sharad Pawar is a senior leader and head of their family and he would not respond to any criticism made by the latter.

On the senior Pawar being targeted by the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena, the NCP leader said the Mahayuti allies should also understand what they speak.

“I voice my opinion when we sit together,” he added.

Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Granted 21-Day Furlough

Dera Sacha Sauda chief and rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been granted a 21-day furlough, official sources said on Tuesday.

During his temporary release period, Singh will go to the Dera ashram in Barnawa in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat, they further said.

The Sirsa-headquartered Dera sect chief was granted the temporary release days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court disposed of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC) petition against Singh’s temporary release.

The high court on August 9 observed that a plea for temporary release by the Dera chief should be considered by the competent authority without any “arbitrariness or favouritism”.

In June, Singh moved the high court and sought directions to grant him a 21-day furlough.

On February 29, the high court directed the Haryana government not to grant further parole to the Dera Sacha Sauda chief without its permission.

He had been granted a 50-day parole on January 19.

Singh is serving a 20-year sentence for raping two of his disciples and is lodged in the Sunaria jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district.

He was sentenced in 2017.

The Dera chief and three others were also convicted in 2019 for the murder of a journalist more than 16 years ago.

In May, the high court acquitted Singh and four others in the 2002 murder of the sect’s former manager Ranjit Singh, citing “tainted and sketchy” investigations in the matter.

A special CBI court had sentenced them to life imprisonment in the nearly 20-year-old murder case. Singh had been held guilty of hatching a criminal conspiracy with his co-accused.

Sheikh Hasina's Stay in India Will Not Hurt Bilateral Ties: Interim Govt Adviser 11

A key adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government on Monday said that deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s extended stay in India will not hurt bilateral relations and Dhaka will always try to maintain good relations with New Delhi.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain made the remarks when asked whether bilateral ties with India would be affected if Hasina’s stay in India gets prolonged.

“This is a hypothetical question. If someone stays in a country why the relations with that particular country would be affected? There is no reason for that,” he said, emphasising that bilateral relations are a big matter.

Hasina, 76, resigned and fled to India last week following widespread protests against her government over a controversial quota system in jobs.

Hossain said bilateral relations are a relation of interest and friendship is also of interest. “Friendship does not exist if the interest is hurt.” He said the two sides – Bangladesh and India – have interests and they will follow those interests. Hossain said the relationship between the two countries “is not influenced by the presence of one individual in a country” while “India has its interests, and Bangladesh has its interests”.

The adviser said they will “always try to maintain good relations” with India.

Earlier, he briefed the diplomats stationed in Dhaka, including Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma, on the situation in Bangladesh and sought their support.

“We believe that all our friends and partners in the international community would continue to stand by the interim government and our people as we embark on charting a new future for Bangladesh,” Hossain told the diplomats.

Hossain, a career diplomat and former foreign secretary, reaffirmed that Bangladesh was committed to upholding all agreements made with other countries.

The adviser accused the Awami League regime of committing gross human rights violations in its attempts to suppress a popular movement eventually resulting in its ouster.

“However, the sheer power of people ultimately led to the fall of all authoritarian regimes,” Hossain said, adding that Bangladesh had experienced a “second liberation” last week driven by a mass uprising led by “our courageous students”.

The adviser said the interim government was committed to meeting the renewed expectations of the people and expressed confidence that the international community would continue to support the interim government and the people of Bangladesh as they work towards a new future.

“Bangladesh is on the brink of a new beginning,” he said.

The adviser informed the diplomats that the government has taken quick and decisive measures to restore law and order and bring back normalcy across the country.

Representatives from all diplomatic missions in Dhaka, including UN agencies, attended the briefing while they inquired about security measures, the Rohingya issue, and the current situation.

“We can assure that the safety and security of the diplomatic and consular premises and persons will remain one of our core priorities,” Hossain said, adding the interim government remained sensitized to the need to ensure the protection of all foreign citizens.

Hossain said that the government would remain focused on a smooth transition to “inclusive and pluralistic electoral democracy as soon as possible”.

During his first press briefing at the foreign ministry on Sunday, Hossain was asked about the possibility of bringing home Hasina. He replied that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the law ministry while his office would respond only if that ministry makes any such request.

“Our policy is to maintain good relations with all countries while protecting our national interests,” said Hossain, whose position is equivalent to a minister’s.

“We intend to maintain smooth and positive relations with all … including India and China,” said Hossain, who previously served as a deputy high commissioner to India.

When asked about the interim government’s approach towards India, Hossain said both countries share a strong and deep bond.

“(But) it is important that people feel India is a good friend of Bangladesh… We want that, we want to advance the (Dhaka-Delhi) relation towards that direction,” he said.

Cheating Case: HC Grants Interim Protection From Arrest to Former IAS Probationer Puja Khedkar 13

The Delhi High Court today granted interim protection from arrest till August 21 to former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, who has been accused of cheating and wrongly availing OBC and disability quota benefits.

Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to the Delhi Police as well as the UPSC on the anticipatory bail plea by Khedkar, and asked them to file their responses.

“In the facts of the present case, the court is of the opinion that the petitioner be not arrested till the next date of hearing,” Justice Prasad said.

The court listed the case for further hearing on August 21.

Khedkar allegedly misrepresented information in her application for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2022 to get reservation benefits.

On July 31, the UPSC cancelled Khedkar’s candidature and debarred her from future exams.

On August 1, a sessions court here had denied anticipatory bail to her and said there are serious allegations against her, which “require a thorough investigation”.

Khedkar had approached the sessions court, saying she faces “immediate threat of arrest”.

Will Hand Over Doctor Murder Probe to CBI if Police Fail to Solve Case by Sunday: CM Mamata 15

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that her government will hand over the RG Kar hospital doctor murder probe to the CBI if police fail to solve the case by Sunday.

Banerjee also said she wants the case to be tried in a fast track court.

“If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” Banerjee told reporters here after visiting the residence of the deceased doctor.

The body of the woman post-graduate trainee, who was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital, was found on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested in this connection on Saturday.

Excise Policy Case: Delhi CM Kejriwal Challenges His Arrest by CBI, Moves Bail Plea in SC 17

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approached the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to the excise policy case. Alongside, he has filed a bail plea.

This follows the Delhi High Court’s earlier decision to dismiss his petition against the arrest, recommending that he seek bail from the trial court. The High Court noted that the CBI, out of respect for Kejriwal’s position, conducted extensive investigations across India before proceeding.

Kejriwal, in his plea to the Delhi High Court, emphasized his role as the National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi’s sitting Chief Minister, claiming he is being persecuted for malign reasons. The court observed that the CBI had gathered sufficient material over one and a half years, only then seeking prosecution sanction granted on April 23, 2024, thus not acting out of malice.

The court acknowledged Kejriwal’s distinguished status, noting his influence on witnesses who came forward only post his arrest. Justice Neena Bansal of the Delhi High Court remarked that given the case’s complexities, Kejriwal’s role in the alleged conspiracy must be determined accurately, suggesting he first address his bail plea with the Sessions Judge post the charge sheet filing. Former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was earlier granted bail by the Supreme Court in a related case.

7 Dead, 3 Missing As Car Swept Away In Swollen Rivulet In Punjab 19

Seven members of a family died and three others went missing after their vehicle got swept away by the flooded Jaijon Choe, a seasonal rivulet around 34 km from Hoshiarpur in Punjab on Sunday, police said.

The rivulet was swollen due to heavy rainfall that lashed several parts of Punjab and other areas.

Ten members of a family, along with a driver, were travelling in the SUV from Dehra near Mehatpur in Himachal Pradesh to Mehrowal village in SBS Nagar to attend a wedding, police officials said.

On the way to Mehrowal, the vehicle got swept away by the swollen waters of the rivulet, they said, adding several locals managed to rescue one occupant from the vehicle and took him to the Government Dispensary in Jaijon.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagir Singh said seven bodies, including those of two women, have been recovered from the rivulet.

Efforts are on to trace the three missing people, he added.
