SC dubs Muzaffarpur case ‘shocking, horrible and scary’

Supreme Court AV 1

The Supreme Court, while perusing the status report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Muzaffarpur shelter homeprobe, said it revealed “shocking, horrible and scary” details of how the crime was committed.

During the hearing, the apex court said that primary accused Brajesh Thakur should be shifted to a jail outside Bihar as he “is a very influential person.”

“It’s very scary and terrible. What is the Bihar government doing? Brajesh Thakur is a very influential man and obstructing the investigation,” the top court said.

The top court also issued a show cause notice to Thakur seeking his reply as to why he should not be shifted out to another jail outside Bihar.

The Supreme Court also asked the Bihar government and the CBI to file a response as to why Chandrashekhar Verma, husband of former Bihar minister Manju Verma, has not been arrested yet.

Manju, who was the state’s social welfare minister, resigned from her position after her husband was accused of having alleged links with Thakur in the scandal.

Chandrashekhar allegedly used to visit the shelter home quite frequently and spent hours in the girls’ shelter home. The couple repeatedly denied all the allegations.

More than 40 minor girls were allegedly sexually assaulted over a period of time in the shelter home which was run by Thakur’s state-funded non-governmental organisation (NGO). The NGO was blacklisted and the girls were shifted to shelter homes in Patna and Madhubani.

The case came to light following an audit report of Mumbai’s leading research institute, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

Modi removed CBI chief as he was scared about Rafale: Rahul

Rahul Gandhi AV 6

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi removed the CBI chief in the middle of the night because he was scared the agency was about to start probing the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Gandhi had made a similar allegation Wednesday when he began his two-day Rajasthan trip, which happened to coincide with the shake-up at the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has already dismissed as “rubbish” allegations that CBI director Alok Verma was sent on leave because he wanted to investigate the Rafale deal.

On Thursday, talking to Mahila Congress workers in Kota and at a rally in Sikar, Gandhi brought up Rafale and the CBI again.

He also mocked Modi over an earlier remark that he wanted to be the country’s watchman against corruption.

Two days ago the watchman did something new, the Congress chief said.

It was not done in the daytime, but when people of the country were sleeping, he said, referring to the government decision on the CBI.

I feel sad that one watchman has defamed all watchmen of the country. These watchmen are not at fault as they are working honestly. We are talking about an individual who had asked to be made a ‘chowkidar’ rather than the prime minister, Gandhi said at the ‘Maha Sankalp’ rally in Sikar district.

The CBI was going to start an inquiry and therefore the prime minister got scared and removed the CBI chief at 1 am in the night, he said in Kota.

Gandhi repeated the allegation that the prime minister paved the way for Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group to bag a Rafale-related offset deal. Both the government and the Reliance Group have earlier rejected the charges.

Gandhi also mentioned the sacrifices of Army jawans from the state’s Shekhawati region, linking them again to the fighter deal with France and the alleged favouritism towards the Reliance Group.

He repeated the Congress allegation that the Rafale jets were being procured at a much higher price than what was being negotiated while the UPA government was in power.

He claimed the Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force were not consulted.

The defence ministry and the IAF worked for years on the contract. But the prime minister, without asking the defence minister or the defence ministry or the IAF, changed the contract of Rs 30,000 crore, he said.

A late-night order on Tuesday from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet led by the prime minister sent Verma and CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who were at loggerheads, on leave.

Jaitley said on Wednesday that the government’s decision to remove the CBI’s two top officers was based on the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) recommendations.

Gandhi pushed for the participation of more women across various levels in the Congress, saying he would like half of his party’s chief ministers to be women in the next five to seven years.

Manvendra Singh, who recently switched from the Bharatiya Janata Party to the Congress, was present on the stage.

Naidu lambasts Centre for hampering AP’s development

Chandrababu Naidu AV

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government, saying that it is deliberately trying to hamper the development of the state.

While speaking at the Collectors Conference in Amaravati, Naidu said that such attitude of the Centre is a “result of bad leadership”.

“The central government did not give (Andhra Pradesh) special status or any special package. They even took back the funds already released. Funds for Polavaram national project are also not being released,” Naidu said.
“Smart cities will yield higher income for the Centre than the states. Had the Centre released a good amount of funds, we would have recorded greater development. But nominal funds are being released,” he added.

Naidu further took a jibe at the central government for causing hurdles in their endeavours to build Amaravati as smart city. “We are building Amaravati capital city as the best city. But the Centre is not providing funds. The Centre is creating hurdles when we ask to give us mining and other works.”

He said, “In the pretext of raids, the Centre tried to threaten the business community. There are no fake businessmen in our state. We are willing to explain all the details to the officials. Transparency is our strength,” he said.

Naidu said that the state would be working towards the development of the Kakinada petrochemical corridor. “We will not stop (in our endeavour) just because the Centre is not cooperating,” Naidu emphasised.

Speaking on the ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) row, the Andhra PradeshChief Minister said, “CBI is being corrupted. The Centre has changed the CBI Director as they are afraid that the CBI will start an inquiry into all the allegations against them. Instead of strengthening the institutions, the Centre is weakening them.

Midnight decisions are being taken violating all rules and regulations. If institutions are tampered, future generations will be affected.”

The ‘Mulk’ actor took to his official Twitter handle to share a happy selfie with Ranbir and De Niro along with a message.

The post read, “Wow moment. Impromptu meeting with Robert De Nero on 65th and 3rd. He knew Ranbir coz he had met him and Anupam and said come over with Kher for a drink! Simplicity and super stardom. I realized I have been such a bloody brat. Cannot get over his demeanor. Thank you Bob !”

Music fixes everything, says Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande AV 1

Replying to a Twitter user, who praised her passion for music, Grande said, “It ain’t work when you love it are you kidding! It’s insane: Mike Flanagan on Stephen King’s praise for ‘The Haunting of Hill House’

Director Mike Flanagan AV

Director Mike Flanagan says it feels “surreal” and “wonderful” to be praised by author Stephen King.

King, 71, called Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Hill House” “close to a work of genius”.

Responding to King’s kind words, Flanagan told a leading online portal that, “It’s insane, and I’ve never spoken to Steve. We email all the time, actually, especially with ‘Doctor Sleep’ going, but I’ve never met him and he’s been my hero since I was a kid…”

“I had no idea he was watching the show. We’ve never discussed the show. It’s like a little 12-year-old who just squeaks, and I like to think at some point in my career, maybe I’ll get better at reacting to that. It’s surreal to me and wonderful, and I’m thrilled he loves the show because the other thing I also know about him is if he doesn’t like something, he isn’t shy about it,” he added.

Netflix has not yet ordered a second season of “The Haunting of Hill House” but the director said he was, personally, done with the story of the Crain family.

“I don’t want to speculate too much about season two until Netflix and Paramount and Amblin let us know if they want one. What I will say, though, is that as far as I’ve ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told. It’s done. I think that there are all sorts of different directions we could go in, with the house or with something completely different,” he said.

“I love the idea of an anthology as well. But to me, I felt like the Crains have been through enough, and we left them exactly as we all wanted to remember them, those of us who worked on it,” he added.

“Hey guys, I’m sorry to announce I have to postpone the show at MSG tonight on doctor’s orders. My vocal cords are severely bruised.

“I’m gonna make this up to you and the new show will be on my birthday, January 31. More info to come. Again, I’m so sorry to do this, but excited to see you soon,” he wrote.

Timberlake announced the postponement just two hours after MSG tweeted about the singer’s second gig at the venue. He had performed in Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Following the release of his fifth album ‘Man of the Woods’ in February, Timberlake embarked on a North American tour in support of the LP in March. The second leg of the tour began last month, with dates currently extending into January.
