Rafale deal will ‘sink’ Modi government: Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot AV

AICC general secretary and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, saying the Rafale fighter jet deal will “sink” the Modi government.

He claimed that Modi’s popularity graph has come down and looked at the prime minister’s previous speeches, Congress does not even need to campaign because “things have been exposed now”.

“The Rafale deal will sink the Modi government,” Gehlot said at a press conference.

He said the tender was “snatched” from the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for manufacturing Rafale fighter jets and this was an “insult” to HAL employees.

“When we visited the HAL office, we saw tears rolling downs from employees. Former employees too said that this was an insult to HAL,” he said.

He also attacked Modi on issues of price rise among others.

“Inflation increased, rupee devalued and his promises fell flat. Compare the speeches of Modi made earlier and now, I assure that the Congress will not need to campaign in the country,” Gehlot said.

He said that despite Modi becoming the Prime Minister after his party got a huge mandate in 30 years, the promises were “not fulfilled”.

On Modi’s allegations about neglecting contributions of Subhas Chandra Bose, Gehlot said that Bose is respected all over the country.

In a veiled attack on the Nehru-Gandhi clan, Modi on Sunday alleged that the contribution of several great leaders such as Sardar Patel, B R Ambedkar, and Bose to the country’s freedom struggle was “deliberately” forgotten to glorify “one family”

Gehlot said that it took several years for the BJP to remember Bose after his sacrifice.

“They never named them but doing it now – this is our inheritance but they are capturing it,” he said.

#MeToo in Media: SC seeks a response from media regulatory bodies

Supreme Court Metoo AV

In view of the ongoing accusations of sexual harassment at workplace, the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday sought a response from various media regulatory bodies as to why they have not taken any steps in informing the police about violations of law committed by media organisations.

The top court has asked Press Council of India, Editors Guild of India and Indian Broadcasting Federation and News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) to file affidavits on whether they have reported to police the cases of media persons who have violated the statutory requirement under relevant laws.

The court observed that some of the offences have criminal liability and that it is quite clear that no prosecution has taken place by these bodies against alleged offenders (media persons and organisations).

Petrol pumps strike: BJP slams AAP, Kejriwal over ‘adamant behaviour’

Petrol pumps strike AV

Amid 400 petrol pumps strike in the national capital on Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come down heavily on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Delhi government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his “adamant behaviour” for refusing to reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel and petrol in the city. The one-day strike by petrol pumps along with linked CNG dispensing units will remain shut till 5 am on Tuesday.

“VAT has not been reduced yet in Delhi, so there is tension. AAP is responsible for all this chaos. People are forced to pay Rs 2.5 extra for getting petrol in Delhi. People are forced to take petrol from outside Delhi,” state BJP leader Vijender Gupta told agencies.

“I condemn the adamant behaviour and decision of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. We want the AAP government to work for the benefit of the people. If they can’t do so then I think Arvind Kejriwal should resign from his position,” he added.

Speaking to agencies, AAP leader Raghav Chadha defended the Delhi government while alleging: “The BJP has asked petrol pump owners to go on strike in the city. While few petrol pump owners agreed to the BJP’s decision, others were forced to go on strike. They have been threatened that the Income Tax department will conduct raids at their properties if they don’t go on strike.”

The strike has been “totally engineered by the BJP,” Chadha alleged.

“Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has come into power, the excise duty over petrol and diesel has been increased 12 times. Now the government is not decreasing the fuel prices, rather they are asking petrol pump owners to go on strike to create tension in Delhi. We want the central government to first decrease the prices of crude oil. They should also bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST. The central government has earned more than Rs 10 lakh crore only through excise duty,” he said.

On October 4, the central government slashed fuel prices by Rs 2.50 per litre after curbing excise duty on the commodity by Rs 1.50 per litre. The decision was backed by several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Tripura. These states reduced local sales tax or the VAT.

In Delhi, petrol price was slashed by 30 paise to retail at Rs. 81.34 per litre while diesel is being sold 27 paise lower at Rs. 74.92 per litre on Monday.
