"He is the master of his own destiny…": MI head coach Mark Boucher on Rohit Sharma's future with team 2

After finishing the IPL 2024 season at the bottom of the points table, Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mark Boucher looked back and spoke his heart on a number of challenges the team faced over the last two months. After losing to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Mumbai’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season came to an abrupt end, finishing last in the IPL standings.

As MI’s disastrous season ended in the IPL 2024, Boucher was asked about the future of former skipper Rohit Sharam with the team and the head coach said that the opener is a master of his own destiny. In MI’s last match of the season, opener Rohit showed the erratic nature of T20I by going through a slump after a bright start to the season.

“For me, he is a master of his own destiny. It’s a big auction next season who knows what’s going to happen?” Boucher said in a post-match press conference. Talking about the former MI skipper’s performance, Boucher said it was a season of two halves for the opener as he had a strong start to the season and hammered the ball well into the netting. The head coach also said that Rohit was headed in the right direction so that we could run some excellent races.

“I had a discussion with Rohit Sharma last night. We reviewed the season this year. After that, I asked him what’s next? and Rohit said ‘the World Cup'”, he added. In the Indian Premier League on Friday, Rohit broke a run of poor scores when he struck an incredible 68 off 38 deliveries in the Mumbai match against LSG.

“It’s almost a season of two halves for him. He started the season well and hit the ball sweetly in the nets. He got a superb 100 against CSK as well. So we honestly thought he was on a great path for us to go out there and get some good runs,” Boucher said. In a season beset by controversy for the MI, Rohit’s batting performance was as inconsistent. Rohit’s fortunes collapsed after he made a promising start to the season with the bat, which featured a century against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but in his next six appearances, the opener was dismissed on four single-digit scores.

“Unfortunately, it’s just the nature of T20 as well. He went out there trying to be aggressive, the new way of playing as an opening batter. He got a few low scores, which unfortunately didn’t help us in that particular situation either. But tonight, he finished off with a fantastic knock as well. So yeah, it is a season of two halves for him,” he added. MI fans had mixed emotions on a bittersweet evening at the Wankhede Stadium. While they were thrilled with Rohit’s explosive fifty but also witnessed their team suffer their tenth loss of the year and drop to the bottom of the points table.

Coming to the match, Rohit and Naman Dhir’s fiery knocks went in vain as MI conceded an 18-run loss against LSG in the IPL 2024 match at the Wankhede Stadium. After winning the toss MI sent LSG to bat first but that did not go in their favour as KL Rahul (55 runs from 41 balls, 3 fours and 3 sixes) and Nicholas Pooran (75 runs from 29 balls, 5 fours and 8 sixes) played a fiery knock in the first inning. Marcus Stoinis (28 runs from 22 balls, 5 fours) and Ayush Badoni (22* runs from 10 balls, 1 four and 2 sixes) were the other standout batters for LSG as they propelled the visitors to 214/6.

In the run chase, the hosts had a stupendous start while chasing a 215-run target but after the end of the fourth over, rain played a spoilsport for which the game was halted for a few minutes. However, that did not break the MI openers’ momentum as Rohit Sharma (68 runs from 38 balls, 10 fours and 3 sixes) and Dewald Brevis (23 runs from 20 balls, 1 four and 2 sixes) played a partnership of 88 runs. Naman Dhir’s (62* runs from 28 balls, 4 fours and 5 sixes) stunning knock in the later half of the run chase shed a ray of hope on the MI dugout as they thought the hosts could win the match but he failed to clinch a win in the end and conceded a 18-run loss.

Missing actor Gurucharan Singh of 'Taarak Mehta...' fame returns home 4

Actor Gurucharan Singh of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Oooltah Chashmah’ fame, who had been missing since April 22 this year, returned to his Delhi residence on Friday. The word of his return brought a huge sigh of relief to his fans, who had been voicing worries over his whereabouts on social media.

Soon after he returned to his residence in the national capital, the actor was questioned by Delhi Police and his statement recorded before a local court. The actor deposed that he left home for a spiritual journey, the police informed. Earlier in April, Gurucharan’s distressed father filed a complaint with Delhi Police, detailing his son’s sudden disappearance since his departure for Mumbai.

According to his father’s statement, Gurucharan, who was visiting his parents in Delhi, was expected to return to Mumbai. But he never reached the city. During the initial investigation, the police also found that the actor was operating multiple bank accounts for financial transactions and was frequently using credit cards despite not being in a sound fiscal state. Friends and relatives of the actor initially told police that Gurucharan was indulging his spiritual side and had even put forward the thought of going to the mountains.

Earlier, the president of the All Indian Cine Workers Association, Suresh Shyamlal Gupta, urged Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi to ensure an expeditious probe into the matter. Gupta shared a self-made video stating that the entire Indian film industry was standing with the kin of Gurucharan.

“Actor Gurucharan Singh, known for his role as Roshan Singh Sodhi in the popular Bollywood serial ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’, has been missing since April 22, 2024, from Delhi Airport. His father has filed a missing case at Palam Police Station in Delhi. The entire Bollywood and Indian Film Industry stand with Gurucharan Singh’s family at every step,” Gupta said in the video. “All Indian Cine Workers Association appeals to the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Delhi to expedite the resolution of the missing case of Actor Gurucharan Singh (Sodhi) and ensure justice for his father, Hargit Singh, and take strict action against the culprits,” he added.

After finding fame essaying the role of Sodhi in ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’, the actor quit the popular show a few years ago.

"Their credibility is not zero, it's in minus": JP Nadda slams AAP over Swati Maliwal assault case 6

Coming down heavily on the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal assault case, BJP President JP Nadda has said that the AAP doesn’t have any credibility adding that Kejriwal has been exposed in front of the people. In an interview with ANI, Nadda said that the AAP is built on the foundation of lies like its leaders.

“First of all, the Aam Aadmi Party is a party built on the foundation of lies and its credibility is not zero, it is in minus. Kejriwal has been exposed infront of the people of Delhi. He used to say that he would not enter politics, not contest elections, not take the bungalow or convoy, and not compromise with Congress. He used to say that he would not commit corruption, and respect the woman. But which of the things did he follow? He made the party, contested the elections, and compromised with Congress,” the BJP leader said. “He went to jail in a corruption case and is out on interim bail for a few days on the order of the Supreme Court,” he added.

Hitting out at Kejriwal over his silence in the press conference with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, Nadda said, “The incident happened in his house and he kept silent. If it was the conspiracy of the BJP then why did you shift the mike from one place to the other? As Kejriwal entered the venue for his press conference with Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Thursday, reporters attempted to question him on the alleged assault on Swati Maliwal. The AAP supremo however refused to answer any questions.

During the press conference when the issue was raised, Akhilesh Yadav brushed aside the question saying “There are other issues that are more important than this.” Nadda further raised alleged atrocities against women committed under the AAP regime and asked the reason for Kejriwal’s silence in the matter.

“Why are you silent on the disrespect of women? What is stopping you? Your actions are speaking. What is the culture of the party? Sometimes the Chief Secretary is beaten and sometimes a woman is beaten in his house, and that also a woman who is the MP of Rajya Sabha, and one of the founding members of his party. This is their thought. They have such low thinking. This shows your culture and you’re exposed. Everything will be clear and the people of Delhi will answer them,” the BJP President said. Answering whether Swati Maliwal asked for help from the BJP, Nadda said that the former never came close to their party.

“She never came even close to our party. We never talked. This is not our way of working. We are straightforward people. We do not work like this. No one should be misguided like this. This means that if your thefts are caught, you’ll blame the police. ‘Ulta chor kotwal ko daantey’,” he said. “They don’t have any credibility. Their party, leaders and even Kejriwal also don’t have any credibility. They can reach any distance. They can stoop to any level and make any allegation. But they cannot escape from any blame,” the BJP President added.

Swati Maliwal’s allegations that she was assaulted inside Kejriwal’s house by the latter’s personal secretary, Bibhav Kumar, has descended into a massive political controversy, with the Aam Aadmi Party refuting her charges. While Mailwal claimed she was beaten inside Kejriwal’s house, Kumar claimed she was trying to implicate him in a false case and also indicated the possibility of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) involvement in the matter.

A team of Delhi Police, led by Additional DCP Delhi North, Civil Lines Police Station SHO, and a team of forensic officials, arrived at the CM’s residence on Friday evening for scene recreation. Maliwal was also called there as part of the investigation into the alleged assault on her. Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar also filed a written complaint against Maliwal, alleging unauthorized entry, verbal abuse, threats, and the possibility of the BJP’s involvement in the matter.

The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned hearing on former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s interim bail for election campaigning till May 21. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta listed the matter for further hearing on May 21.

When the hearing began, the Enforcement Directorate sought time to file a reply to the petition. The court asked the ED to file a reply by the next date of the hearing. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, for ED, said that Soren was arrested long before the elections.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal for Soren stressed interim bail and apprised the court that one phase of the Lok Sabha poll is over, the fifth phase is on May 20 and the third phase is scheduled for May 25. He also said that there is no material to show against Soren in the case. The top court said that it will not pass any order unless it is prima facie satisfied.

Soren has approached the top court against the Jharkhand High Court decision which rejected his plea challenging arrest in a money laundering case. Jharkhand High Court has rejected Soren’s plea challenging arrest in a money laundering case on May 3. Soren in his plea before the High Court has claimed that his arrest was unwarranted and his remand in the matter was arbitrary and illegal.

Hemant Soren, who has filed the petition through advocate Pragya Baghel, called his arrest illegal and malafide. In the meantime, he has sought interim bail. After a prolonged moment of speculation in the media and a hide-and-seek drama, former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chairperson Hemant Soren was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in the land scam case in January.

The probe pertains to huge amounts of proceeds of crime generated by forging official records by showing ‘fake sellers’ and purchasers in the guise of forged or bogus documents to acquire huge parcels of land valued in crores.

"I am handing over my son to you… he won't disappoint": Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli 11

In her first public address in the ongoing election campaign for the Lok Sabha polls, Congress leader and AICC President Sonia Gandhi urged the people of Raebarelli to accept his son Rahul Gandhi just like the way they accepted her while assuring that “he won’t disappoint them.” This was Sonia Gandhi’s first public address in Raebareli, her erstwhile constituency in a long time, and she recalled the ‘age-old’ roots of the Gandhi family with the people of the constituency. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were also present alongside her during her address.

“I am very happy that I got the opportunity to come among you after so long…You all gave me the opportunity to serve you as an MP, this is the biggest treasure of my life. For the last 100 years, the roots of our family are connected to the soil of this land. This relation is as pure as Ganga Maa. It started with the farmer’s agitation of Awadh and Raebareli,” Sonia Gandhi said addressing the public meeting. Expressing gratefulness to the people of Raebareli, the AICC President said that she has given the same teachings and morals to her children — Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, that she got from the people of the constituency and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“In Indira Ji’s heart, there was a special place for Raebareli. I have seen her working very closely, she had immense affection for you all. I have given the same teachings to Rahul and Priyanka, that Indira Ji and the people of Raebareli had bestowed upon me; Respect all, protect the weak, fight for people’s rights against injustice, don’t be sacred, because the roots of struggle is very strong,” Sonia Gandhi said. “My aanchal (end of a saari, also refers to protective shelter) was always filled with your love and affection. Your love never made me feel alone Everything I have is yours…I am handing over my son to you. You have to accept him and keep him, just like you accepted me. Rahul will not disappoint you,” the Congress leader said while making an emotional appeal to the people to accept her son.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from Raebareli, the erstwhile constituency of her mother. Sonia Gandhi held the seat for four consecutive terms since 2004, before she took the Rajya Sabha route to the Parliament this year. In Amethi — the other Congress bastion, the party lost in 2019 — incumbent MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani is pitted against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a long-time loyalist of the Gandhi family. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has also fielded Nanhe Singh Chauhan from the seat.

Polling on both the seats will be held on May 20 in the fifth phase of the elections. The 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh are being held across all seven phases. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

Hezbollah introduces new weapons and tactics against Israel as war in Gaza drags on

Hezbollah introduces new weapons and tactics against Israel as war in Gaza drags on 13

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah this week struck a military post in northern Israel using a drone that fired two missiles. The attack wounded three soldiers, one of them seriously, according to the Israeli military.

Hezbollah has regularly fired missiles across the border with Israel over the past seven months, but the one on Thursday appears to have been the first successful missile airstrike it has launched from within Israeli airspace.

The group has stepped up its attacks on Israel in recent weeks, particularly since the Israeli incursion into the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. It has struck deeper inside Israel and introduced new and more advanced weaponry.

“This is a method of sending messages on the ground to the Israeli enemy, meaning that this is part of what we have, and if needed we can strike more,” said Lebanese political analyst Faisal Abdul-Sater who closely follows Hezbollah.

While the cross-border exchanges of fire have been ongoing since early October, “complex attacks” by Hezbollah began a few days after Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile barrage attack on Israel in mid-April.

In the past two weeks, Hezbollah has escalated further in response to the Israeli incursion into the city of southern Rafah in the Gaza Strip, a Lebanese official familiar with the group’s operations said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to detail military information to the media.

The Thursday afternoon attack by a drone carrying missiles came just days after Hezbollah launched three anti-tank guided missiles at an Israeli military post that controlled a surveillance balloon flying over the border.

They released camera footage afterward to show they had hit their mark. Hours later, the Israeli military confirmed that the spy balloon had been shot down over Lebanon.

The night before, Hezbollah had carried out its deepest attack in Israel to date using explosive drones to strike at a base in Ilaniya near the city of Tiberias about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Lebanon border. The Israeli military said the attack did not hurt anyone.

Abdul-Sater, the analyst, said the Iran-led coalition known as the axis of resistance, which includes the Palestinian militant group Hamas, has warned that if Israeli troops launch a full-scale invasion of Rafah in an attempt to go after Hamas, other fronts will also escalate.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed Wednesday that they attacked a US destroyer while Iran-backed militants in Iraq have said they fired a series of drones toward Israel in recent weeks after having gone relatively quiet since February.

Hezbollah’s use of more advanced weaponry, including drones capable of firing missiles, explosive drones and the small type of guided missile known as Almas, or Diamond, that was used to attack the base controlling the balloon has raised alarms within the Israeli military.

“Hezbollah has been escalating the situation in the north,” said military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani. “They’ve been firing more and more.” In adapting its attacks, Hezbollah has also managed to reduce the numbers of fighters lost compared with the early weeks of the conflict.

The group has lost more than 250 fighters so far, compared with 15 Israeli troops since fighting broke out along the Lebanon-Israel border a day after the Israel-Hamas war started on October 7.

According to a count by The Associated Press, Hezbollah lost 47 fighters in October and 35 in November, compared with 20 in April and 12 so far this month.

The official familiar with the group’s operations said Hezbollah had reduced the numbers of fighters along the border areas to bring down the numbers of casualties.

While Hezbollah continues to fire Russian-made anti-tank Kornet missiles from areas close to the border, it has also shifted to firing drones and other types of rockets with heavy war heads — including Almas as well as Falaq and Burkan rockets — from areas several kilometers (miles) from the border.

Over the weekend, Hezbollah said it had launched a new rocket with a heavy warhead named Jihad Mughniyeh after a senior operative who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on southern Syria in 2015.

Eva J. Koulouriotis, a political analyst specialized in the Middle East and jihadi groups wrote on the social media platform X that Hezbollah’s recent escalation likely has several goals, including raising the ceiling of the group’s demands in any future negotiations for a border deal, as well as raising military pressure on Israel’s military in light of the preparations for the battle in Rafah.

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant vowed in a speech last week that “we will stand, we will achieve our goals, we will hit Hamas, we will destroy Hezbollah, and we will bring security”.

On Monday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah reiterated in a speech that there will be no end to the fighting along the Lebanon-Israel border until Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip come to an end.

“The main goal of Lebanon’s front is to contribute to the pressure on the enemy to end the war on Gaza,” Nasrallah said.

His comments were a blow to attempts by foreign dignitaries, including US and French officials, who have visited Beirut to try to put an end to the violence that has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.

A day after Nasrallah spoke, Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly visited Beirut and told Lebanon’s private LBC TV station that she was pushing for a cease-fire.

“We need the people living in the south of Lebanon to be able to go back to their homes,” she said. ”We need to make sure that the Israelis living in the northern part of Israel are able to get back to their homes also.” Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Kassim warned Israel in a speech over the weekend against opening an all-out war.

“You have tried in the past and you were defeated and if you try again you will be defeated,” said Kassim, referring to the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah 34-day war that ended in a draw.

A 37-year-old housewife from Navi Mumbai lost over Rs 24 lakh in a “task fraud,” an official said on Friday. In her complaint, the woman, a resident of Kalamboli, said a person offered her a “job opportunity” in March.

The job involved “liking videos”. After paying her some money for the “task,” the person coaxed her into investing Rs 24.16 lakh, saying she would get good returns, the official said, citing the complaint. After completing the tasks assigned to her, the woman sought payment from the person she was in touch with but he became unreachable. Realising that she had been duped, the woman then approached the police.

A case was registered on Thursday for cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and the IT Act, said the station house officer at the Kalamboli police station, adding that the woman only had the number of the alleged scammer.

Modi accuses SP and Congress of spreading misinformation about CAA in Azamgarh 18

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday the country has started granting citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act while the opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress tried to cause riots in the country by spreading lies about the law.

Addressing a Lok Sabha election rally in the Lalganj area here, he said, ”The work of giving refugees citizenship under the CAA has already started. These are those people who have been living in the country for a long time as refugees and were victims of partition of the country done on the basis of religion.” Modi also accused the Congress of neglecting these refugees.

”The Congress and the SP tried to spread lies in the name of CAA. They tried to push Uttar Pradesh and the entire country towards riots,” he alleged.

The prime minister added that although the people of ”INDI alliance” claim they will remove CAA, ”no one can do it”.

”You are a fraud… you forced the country to burn in the fire of communalism,” he said, attacking the opposition without taking any name.

”Do whatever you want to, but you will never be able to remove CAA,” Modi added.
