Haryana Congress demands dissolution of BJP government in Haryana, fresh elections 2

The Congress on Wednesday sought the imposition of President’s Rule, followed by fresh polls in Haryana after three Independent MLAs withdrew support to the BJP dispensation, reducing the Nayab Singh Saini government to a minority in the state assembly.

The party said it would write to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya to demand that the BJP government be dismissed. It also asked the JJP, the INLD, and Independent MLA Balraj Kundu to write similar letters to the governor to give credence to their claim of opposing the BJP.

Talking to reporters in Sirsa on Wednesday, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini asserted that his government was not in trouble and was working strongly.

”We are going to write to the Governor that three independent MLAs have withdrawn support and they have extended support to our party… The government is in the minority and they have no right to stay in power. We will demand that the government be dismissed, President’s Rule be imposed and fresh elections be held,” Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan said.

”Likewise, the JJP should also write a letter requesting that the government be dismissed. INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala and Independent MLA Balraj Kundu, who claim to be opposing the government, should also write similar letters to the Governor,” he added.

Bhan said the three Independent MLAs have already written to the Governor regarding their withdrawal of support.

Senior Congress leader B B Batra said the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), once an ally of the BJP in the state, should write to the Governor making it clear that they were not supporting the dispensation.

On Tuesday, JJP leader Digvijay Singh Chautala said Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda should initiate the process to ”bring down” the Nayab Singh Saini government, ”which has lost the trust of people”.

Reacting to Chautala’s statement, Batra said, ”Let the JJP write a letter to the Governor stating that they are not supporting the BJP government… We may know this fact (that JJP is not supporting them) but let them give a letter stating the same.

”Like the three Independent MLAs wrote a letter to the governor stating they have withdrawn their support… The JJP should also do this,” he said.

The three Independent MLAs — Sombir Sangwan (Dadri), Randhir Singh Gollen (Pundri) and Dharampal Gonder (Nilokheri) — on Tuesday withdrew support to the BJP government in Haryana and announced they would back the Congress.

Saini had replaced Manohar Lal Khattar as chief minister in March and the JJP’s four-and-a-half-year-old post-poll alliance with BJP had come to an end with Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala saying they will not be part of the new government headed by Saini.

BJP’s Jawahar Yadav said there was no danger to the BJP government in the state.

He said the Saini government won a trust vote on March 13 and if it has to prove its majority on the floor of the House, it will do so.

The government which has the support of two other Independents is now two short of the majority mark in the 90-member House which has a current strength of 88.

Among the three Independent MLAs who withdrew their support, Gollen fought as an Independent and defeated Congress party’s Satbir Bhana in the 2019 Haryana assembly polls.

He had unsuccessfully fought the 2014 assembly polls on a BJP ticket. He had remained chairman of the Haryana Tourism Corporation.

Gonder defeated BJP nominee Bhagwan Das Kabirpanthi from the Nilokheri seat in the 2019 assembly polls. He had remained the chairman of the Haryana Forest Development Corporation.

Sangwan won the Dadri assembly seat by defeating JJP nominee Satpal Sangwan in the previous assembly elections. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 assembly polls.

In recent days, some JJP MLAs have hinted at supporting the BJP. The BJP has 40 MLAs, the Congress 30 and the JJP 10 in the House. If the opposition seeks a no-confidence motion in the state assembly, the BJP may need JJP MLAs to abstain.

As the intervening period between holding two assembly sessions should not be more than six months, the governor will have to summon the House before September 13.

State Assembly polls in Haryana are due in October, while the Karnal Assembly bypoll is scheduled for May 25, along with voting for the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana.

Saini, the MP from Kurukshetra in the outgoing Lok Sabha, is the BJP candidate for the bypolls and if he wins, the party’s strength in the Assembly will rise to 41.

The Saini-led BJP government in Haryana on March 13 won the trust vote by a voice vote in the House after he took oath as the new chief minister, replacing Khattar.

Former Congress Leader Radhika Khera and Actor Shekhar Suman induct into BJP

Former Congress Leader Radhika Khera and Actor Shekhar Suman induct into BJP 4

Former Congress leader Radhika Khera and actor Shekhar Suman joined the BJP on Tuesday.

Khera, the former national coordinator of the Congress’s media department, resigned from the party’s primary membership on Sunday, days after her altercation with another leader at the party’s Chhattisgarh office.

In her resignation letter to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Khera also claimed she was facing opposition in the party for her visit to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Suman, a popular TV actor who also worked in many Bollywood films, has returned to politics after a gap of about 15 years. He had fought the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Patna Sahib seat in Bihar on a Congress ticket but came third in the contest which was won by Shatrughan Sinha, who was then with the BJP.

Both Khera and Suman joined the BJP at its headquarters here in the presence of its senior leaders, including party national general secretary Vinod Tawde and national media department in-charge Anil Baluni.

Addressing a joint press conference with the BJP leaders, Khera claimed she left the Congress as she was being mistreated since she visited Ayodhya along with her family members for ‘darshan’ of Lord Ram.

She also alleged that the Congress has become ”anti-Sanatan and anti-Hindu and anti-Ram”.

”I could reach here due to a safe and secured government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi (at the Centre). I could not have reached here if I had not got protection from the BJP government in Chhattisgarh,” she claimed.

”I was punished in Congress for being a Hindu, a Sanatani girl and a devotee of Lord Ram. This is no more Mahatma Gandhi’s Congress,” she charged.

Suman expressed gratitude towards God for guiding him to join the BJP, saying one has to do what Lord Ram desires.

”Until yesterday, I did not know that I would be sitting here. I have come here with a very positive thought. I thank God who ordered me to come here,” he told reporters.

Suman hailed Modi and said under his leadership, India has witnessed significant development over the past decade, with its ”position, status, and fortune undergoing positive transformations”.

”It is the duty of every Hindustani to be part of this stream and energy,” he said, adding, ”I am fortunate that I have got the opportunity”.

He thanked Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief JP Nadda and other leaders of the party for giving him an opportunity to fulfill his social responsibility and commitment to fostering a positive change.

Suman, who is well known for a number of TV series including ”Dekh Bhai Dekh” and late night show ”Movers n Shakers” hosted by him, is in limelight with Leela Bhansali’s web series Heeramandi. He is portraying the character of Nawab Zulfikar in the web series. Welcoming Khera and Suman to the BJP fold, Tawde said he was confident that they will contribute to achieving Modi’s resolve of making India a developed country.

Referring to Suman’s famous ”Movers n Shakers” TV show, the BJP leader said in lighter when, ”We will see who will move and shake now”.

EC directs Karnataka BJP to take down animated clip on Muslim quota row 6

Election Commission on Tuesday directed social media platform ‘X’ to ”immediately” take down an animated video shared by the Karnataka unit of the BJP related to the row over reservation for the Muslim community.

In a letter to the nodal officer of ‘X’, the EC took exception to the non-compliance of the directive of the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer to the social media platform for taking down the video.

The panel said the animated video shared by the Karnataka unit of the BJP on its social media handle was violative of the extant legal framework.

The EC said the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka registered an FIR in this connection and wrote to ‘X’ on May 5 to take down the objectionable post as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021.

”However, the post has not been taken down yet. Therefore, ‘X’ is directed to take down the post immediately,” the EC said.

The fresh directive to ‘X’ came on the day votes were being cast in the remaining 14 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka. Polling in the other 14 parliamentary constituencies of Karnataka was held on April 26.

The Karnataka Congress had filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of the state, accusing the BJP of promoting enmity and hatred between the Muslim and the SC/ST communities. The complaint pertains to an animated video shared by the Karnataka BJP, which has caricatures of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The cartoon shows the leaders putting an egg marked ‘Muslim’ on a bird’s nest and after it hatches, Gandhi feeds ‘funds’ to the ‘Muslim’ hatchling while others strive for it. The ‘Muslim’ hatchling grows as a result and kicks the three others – SC, ST and OBC – out as Gandhi and Siddaramaiah laugh.

"Apna kaam banta, bhaad me jaye janta…," PM Modi attacks INDIA bloc in Madhya Pradesh 8

Attacking the INDIA bloc, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the opposition alliance is fighting elections to save their “dynasty,” adding that the alliance is not “bothered” about the fate of the masses. Addressing a rally in Khargone, PM Modi said that the BJP government has provided Madhya Pradesh with a new and prestigious identity by filling the pits created by the Congress.

“They are contesting elections to save their inheritance and hand over their party to their children. They don’t care about your happiness. INDI alliance is not bothered about the fate of the masses. There is a saying about INDI people but I think they will make fake videos of mine; they will run it halfway through it and Modi will get tired of giving clarifications. There is a saying that applies to INDI people: ‘Apna kaam banta, bhaar me jaye janta’ (do your work and let the people go to hell),” PM Modi said. PM Modi said that he has come here to seek blessings to fulfil the resolution of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

“I must have done something good that I am receiving so many blessings today. I have come here today to seek blessings to fulfil the resolution of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and I am aware that those who live at the banks of Narmada (river) never disappoint anyone,” the Prime Minister said. He said that people’s votes have lifted 25 crore people in India out of poverty, adding that the country is marching ahead because of the efforts of the people.

“One vote of yours made India the 5th largest economy, increased India’s global influence, abrogated Article 370 after 70 years, made an Adivasi daughter the President, gave reservation to women, sent the corrupt to jail, gave the guarantee of free ration and treatment, elevated the future of the youth, created unlimited opportunities, and got 25 crore people out of poverty. One vote of yours ended the 500-year-long wait and made the grand Ram Lalla temple,” he added. PM Modi emphasised that India is at a turning point in history and urged the people to decide whether “vote jihad” will prevail or “Ram Rajya” will be established.

Earlier in the morning, PM Modi cast his vote at Nishan Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad, Gujarat for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Polling is going on for 93 Lok Sabha seats across 12 states and union territories in the third phase of the general election on Tuesday.

The states and union territories where the elections are being held in this phase are Assam (4), Bihar (5), Chhattisgarh (7), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (2), Goa (2), Gujarat (25), Karnataka (14), Maharashtra (11), Madhya Pradesh (8), Uttar Pradesh (10) and West Bengal (4). The BJP has bagged the Surat seat unopposed. The Khargone Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to go to polls on May 13 in the fourth phase of polling.

The Lok Sabha elections are being held across seven phases, from April 19 to June 1. The counting is scheduled for June 4.

Advocate Sanjiv Gajanan Punalekar: Battling to live with the same vigour 10

On August 20, 2013, Dr. Narendra Dabholkar was murdered and at that time, Maharashtra was ruled by the anti-Hindu Congress and NCP. Sharad Pawar always advocated banning Sanatan Sanstha, calling it a terror organization. This was the first time Hindus were labelled as terrorists in Indian history. The murders continued and in 2015, Communist leader Govind Pansare and journalist Gauri Lankesh were killed. The Dabholkar murder case was under investigation and these two other cases created an uproar on social media. The socially elite class and section of civil society started mounting pressure on the then government of the BJP-Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) alliance. The government came in and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was assigned to probe the murder. SIT took custody of Sharad Kalaskar, a member of Sanatan Sanstha, who was accused of the murders of Dr Narendra Dabholkar and Gauri Lankesh. If a person is associated with an organization or is dedicated to that organization, it does not mean that the organization is responsible for his every action. In a hurry, Sanatan Sanstha was declared a terrorist organization so that the morale of Hindus could be broken by attacking the organization that supports Hindus and keeps the Hindu religion strong.

Well, the matter did not end here; by spreading objectionable news about the organization, its reputation was being tarnished. The raids on Hindu Jan Jagruti Samiti were conducted, and its members were arrested, kept in jail, and tortured so that they would not say anything. So far, Maharashtra police have failed to get evidence against the so-called accused in the case and finally, the CBI took over the investigations. The CBI arrested Punalekar, the legal advisor of Sanatan Sanstha, along with his aid Vikram Bhave, for abetting two shooters suspected to have killed Dabholkar. Advocate Sanjiv Gajanan Punalekar, was a prominent face and voice on television and he was representing as a lawyer various suspects, including Dr. Virendra Tawade, another accused in the case. Dr. Tawade is an ENT surgeon and a member of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, which is related to Sanatan Sanstha. He was charged with criminal conspiracy and murdering Dabholkar in a chargesheet filed in September 2016.

Punalekar, during television debates, has often voiced Sanstha’s innocence in multiple cases linked to blasts and murders. To provide legal aid, Punalekar was part of a group that formed the Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad, a group of lawyers, aimed at defending members of the community jailed in various cases across the country. Punalekar had a strong voice and was also a critic of the whole case. He started targeting the government and the police and overnight he became a thorn in the eyes of the police. The CBI found it appropriate to imprison him to suppress his voice.

Having appeared as a defence lawyer in the Dabholkar case, Punalekar has spoken in support of the innocence of Sarang Akolkar and Rudra Patil, both accused in the Dabholkar case. After the arrest of Punalekar, the CBI came up with the allegation that he was in touch with Akolkar, who is absconding. Despite tremendous pressure, Punalekar denied that he helped destroy guns used to kill Narendra Dabholkar and Gauri Lankesh. After many arrests were made, the police were still clueless, and they announced a bounty on many suspects but failed to conclude. So many members of Sanstha were taken into custody but so far no one has proven guilty. Why?

Sanjeev Punalekar, in the UAPA court, had accepted that Kalaskar used to meet him before the latter was arrested by the ATS. Punalekar also accepted that Vikram Bhave, who is an accused in another case, started working as his assistant after getting bail in July 2013. During the court proceedings, Punalekar raised a question: if the CBI’s allegations were true, then the CBI should have taken action against him almost seven months ago, because the CBI was banking on Sharad Kalaskar’s statement given to a Karnataka SIT on October 12, 2018, and the CBI’s chargesheet that it filed against Kalaskar in February 2019. Punalekar argued that sections 126 and 129 of the Attorney-Client Privilege Act gave him and his clerk Vikram Bhave, special protection. He argued that under the above section, clients could confide in him.

Sanjeev Punalekar’s lawyer challenged the CBI’s claim that Kalaskar was guided by Punalekar to destroy the firearms as bogus and vindictive. The defense said if Kalaskar was told to destroy the firearms, then what was the need for him to store other firearms at his residence? He said it would be stupidity if Sharad Kalaskar stored the other arms at his place just to get arrested by the ATS in the Nalasopara arms haul case. Advocate Ichalkaranjikar argued that Punalekar was unnecessarily being harassed because he had filed a number of PILs in the interest of the nation. One of Punalekar’s PILs helped the government get back 8,000 acres of revenue department land that was gobbled away by land sharks. So, he felt Punalekar was being harassed by making such false cases against him. Many right-wing think tanks believe that by harassing Sanstha members, perhaps the government at that time was planning to destroy Sanatan Sanstha.

Sanjeev Punalekar was also a defence lawyer in the 2009 Madgaon blasts and the 2008 Malegaon blast case. He had appeared for Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit, Rakesh Dhawade, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Pravin Takalki, among others named in the Malegaon blast case chargesheet, which later went to trial. Sameer Kulkarni, who was among the ones accused and later bailed in the Malegaon blast case,.

In 2019, Sanjeev Punalekar was granted conditional bail by the Pune Sessions Court on a surety amount of Rs 30,000. Punalekar was directed by the court to visit the CBI office twice a week, not to leave the country without the agency’s permission and not to pressure the witnesses. Punalekar was the fourth accused to get bail in the case after Amit Degvekar, Amol Kale, and Rajesh Bangera. Now the question here is, if Sanjiv Punalekar was the mastermind in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, why was he granted conditional bail by a special Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) court?

Now the question is whether he is found innocent, who will compensate for the atrocities committed against him or the damage done to his honour? Will this advocate again be able to stand up with the same zeal to get justice for Hindus? Will his morale not be broken somewhere in all these events?

Charanjit Singh Channi clarifies "stuntbaazi" remark, says "statement was distorted" 12

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi issued a clarification on Monday over his alleged remarks on the recent terror attack incident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and said that his statement was “distorted.” Channi said that he intended to point out that a “similar attack” took place during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections referring to the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed by terrorists.

“My statement was distorted. What I meant to say was that a similar attack had taken place during the last Lok Sabha elections also. But it was not investigated by BJP and till now it is not known who was involved in the said attack,” Channi said in a self-made video released today after his remarks stirred a controversy. Channi alleged that Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar had demanded the Prime Minister’s resignation following the terror attack in 2019 adding that Jakhar has “no stand.”

“Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar had asked for PM Modi’s resignation over the last attack. This attack was carried out as part of a conspiracy. This statement was given by Jakhar on stage. Jakhar has no stand. Satyapal Malik, who was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, had said about the last attack that such attacks can happen again. But the government did not take the gist of the said complaint,” the former CM said. Channi claimed that the BJP was turning the death of soldiers into a political stunt.

“I feel sad when the soldiers of my country are martyred. But BJP is making it its stunt. We are proud of the jawans who joined the armed forces to safeguard the country. I gave a statement that in the last Parliamentary elections, 40 jawans were attacked and they lost their lives,” he said. “To date, the Government has not found out who executed the attack and who was responsible for it. It is election time once again. Our jawans were attacked once again and one jawan lost his life. I would like to ask the Government – who are those people who orchestrate such attacks, why are they not brought before everyone, and why does intelligence failure take place? Jawans have lost their lives once again. What I am saying is that why is this being made a political stunt and used by BJP?” PM Modi said.

“In Patiala, a farmer died yesterday while protesting against BJP. BJP wants to destroy the economy of Punjab. They know that if we destroy agriculture, Punjab will sink,” he added. An Indian Air Force officer was killed and four others injured in the terror attack in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

Pointing out that the attack came amid the Lok Sabha elections, former CM Charanjit Singh Channi had on Sunday alleged it was “pre-planned” and such “stuntbaazi” is done to facilitate BJP’s win in the polls. “This is stuntbaazi. When elections come, such stunts are done to make the BJP win. These are pre-planned attacks, there is no truth in them,” Channi said while speaking to reporters in Punjab.

Following Channi’s comments, Union Minister Anurag Thakur demanded an apology from top Congress brass including former party president Sonia Gandhi. “I have a question for Congress: Were the 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars done for winning elections? On such a ridiculous statement, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should apologise…They question the ability of our forces…How low will Congress stoop? Will Congress insult our Bravehearts for the sake of winning elections?” Thakur said while speaking to reporters on Sunday.

Meanwhile, security has been heightened in the Poonch district following the attack incident. Security forces are carrying out regular checks of the vehicles passing by in the area. The voting in Jammu and Kashmir is being held in five phases and the polling in Anantnag-Rajouri is scheduled to be held on May 7 in the third phase.

Vice Chancellors “unequivocally discard claims” by Rahul Gandhi on their appointment, alleging “intent to derive political mileage”

Vice Chancellors "unequivocally discard claims" by Rahul Gandhi on their appointment, alleging "intent to derive political mileage" 14

Vice Chancellors and academicians across the country have written an open letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with his alleged remarks on the appointment of VCs, accusing him of “resorting to falsehood.” In the letter, it was stated, “It has come to our notice from tweet and open sources of Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, that the appointment of Vice Chancellors is made solely based on affiliation with some organisation rather than merit and qualification, thereby questioning the merit of the process through which the Vice Chancellors are appointed.”

The letter rubbished the alleged claims by Rahul Gandhi, saying, “We categorically and unequivocally discard such claims.” The signatories of over 100 academic professionals, including VCs from top universities across the world and academicians, have been attached along with the letter dated May 5.

It further delved into the appointment process, explaining that the selection is characterised by “stringent, transparent, rigorous procedure.” The letter also urged people to abstain from “spreading unfounded rumours.” “The process by which Vice Chancellors are selected is characterised by stringent, transparent rigorous procedure grounded on values of meritocracy, scholarly distinction and integrity. The selection has been completely based on academic and administrative prowess and with a vision to take Universities ahead,” it mentioned.

“We strongly urge all individuals involved to exercise discernment in distinguishing fact from fiction, to abstain from spreading unfounded rumours, and to participate in dialogue that is well-informed, constructive, and supportive of our shared goal of creating a dynamic andinclusive educational environment. We would like to reaffirm our steadfast dedication to the principles of meritocracy, integrity, and excellence within the realm of higher education,” it added. Rubbishing the claims, the letter called them “baseless allegations” and accused Rahul Gandhi of defaming the office of the VCs at large with an “intent to derive political mileage.”

“With utmost conviction, the Vice Chancellors of prestigious Universities nationwide and academic leaders, address and refute the baseless allegations that have recently been circulated concerning the selection process,” the letter stated. “In view of the fact that Rahul Gandhi has resorted to falsehood and has defamed the Office of the Vice Chancellors at large with the intent to derive political mileage out of it. It is therefore, earnestly prayed that appropriate action be taken against him forthwith in accordance with law,” it added.

Speaking on the open letter and Rahul Gandhi’s alleged remarks, Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Gautam Buddha University, Noida, called it “stupidity” from the Congress leader’s part. “Vice Chancellors of the universities are all highly qualified and will have a professorship of at least 10 years. Most of the VCs in the country are PhD holders, various degree holders and will have various patents to their credit. Despite all this, his claims that Narendra Modi have made all RSS people VCs, there are many places where there are Congress governments. Did Narendra Modi appoint VCs there too?” he said.

“VCs are never appointed through the Prime Minister; it is done through UGC’s selection process. There are multiple private universities where the government doesn’t have any say. So making such allegations on the appointments is stupid,” the VC added.

Water crisis deepens in Maharashtra’s Sangli ahead of Lok Sabha polls third phase

Water crisis deepens in Maharashtra's Sangli ahead of Lok Sabha polls third phase 16

Several ‘talukas’ (tehsil) in Maharashtra’s Sangli district are grappling with acute water scarcity, leading to growing concerns among residents in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.

With the elections looming, addressing this pressing issue has emerged as a key topic of discussion among voters. Residents in Sangli spoke to ANI and said that Jat, Kavthe-Mahankal, Tasgaon Vita, Atpadi and Khanapur are among other numerous ‘talukas’ in the district currently facing a dire shortage of water, causing apprehension among local inhabitants.

This issue has gained traction among voters who have shown significant interest in it, expressing a preference for candidates who pledge to address the problem effectively. “Water scarcity is a major issue here due to minimal rainfall. We are dependent on water tankers for drinking water, and dependent on wells and canals for irrigation. While some irrigation canals from the Krishna River exist, the problem remains critical,” Patanrao Vishu Patil, a resident of Alte area in Tasgaon, told ANI.

Patil further emphasized that the community is determined to support the Lok Sabha candidate who commits to resolving this issue effectively. Another resident of Alte, Shivaji Bhanudas Chavan, told ANI: “For years, several talukas in Sangli district, including Jat, Kavthe-Mahankal, Tasgaon Vita, Atpadi, and Khanapur, have grappled with drought conditions due to scanty rainfall. Despite relying heavily on irrigation canals stemming from the Krishna River, certain areas continue to face water scarcity. We also use wells and ponds to preserve water for irrigation.”

Asked if residents bring up this issue with politicians campaigning for their votes during the Lok Sabha polls, Chavan affirmed, “Yes, we do.” “We have been highlighting the water scarcity problem for years. Additionally, we have made the decision to support those who will address the water crisis,” he told ANI. In response to worsening water scarcity, the administrations of Sangli and its nearby Satara districts last month enforced prohibitory orders along canals. These measures aim to curb water theft and prevent the transportation of cattle fodder outside the regions.

Following a deficient monsoon season, officials said dams and reservoirs in Sangli and Satara districts failed to reach their maximum capacity. Nearly seven months later, most lakes and ponds in the region have dried up, exacerbating water scarcity. The primary sources of water now are dams situated upstream of the Krishna River and its major tributaries, notably the Warna River. However, these dams, including Koyna and Chandoli, are grappling with dwindling reserves.

With about 1,060 hamlets in Sangli and Satara districts left without access to drinking water, local administrations have sprung into action. Responding to this urgent need, authorities have dispatched around 250 water tankers to each district, aiming to provide vital drinking water to affected communities. Sangli District Collector Raja Dayanidhi reportedly last month announced the imposition of prohibitory orders due to the prevailing moderate drought conditions caused by limited water availability. The officer then made it clear that the orders will be effective until the end of May, and that it prohibits the assembly of two or more individuals within a 200-metre radius along the canals.

Officials said invoking prohibitory orders is a standard practice during public emergencies. In an effort to manage the water crisis, prohibitory orders have been extended to canals reliant on major lift irrigation schemes in Sangli district. These schemes, including the Tembu, Arphal, Krishna, and Mhaisal lift irrigation schemes, which collectively provide water to 80 per cent of the district’s population.

Water crisis issues gained momentum as the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections will take place on May 7, when 94 constituencies from 12 states, including Maharashtra, will go to the polls. In the third phase, Baramati, Raigad, Osmanabad, Latur (SC), Solapur (SC), Madha, Sangli, Satara, Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Hatkanangle will go for polls.

ED files Money Laundering case against YouTuber Elvish Yadav and Associates 18

The Enforcement Directorate has filed a money laundering case against YouTuber Siddharth Yadav alias Elvish Yadav and some others under the charge of suspected use of snake venom as a recreational drug in parties he hosted, official sources said Saturday.

The central agency has pressed charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after taking cognisance of a FIR and charge sheet filed by the Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) district police in Uttar Pradesh last month against him and other linked to him.

The alleged generation of proceeds of crime and use of illicit funds for organising rave or recreational parties is under the scanner of the ED. Yadav and some others linked to the case will be questioned as part of the investigation, the sources said.

Yadav was arrested on March 17 by the Noida Police in connection with its probe into suspected use of snake venom as a recreational drug in parties that were allegedly hosted by him.

The 26-year-old YouTuber, also the winner of reality show Bigg Boss OTT 2, was booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Wildlife Protection Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the Noida police.

Yadav was among the six people named in an FIR lodged at Noida’s Sector 49 Police Station on November 3 last year on a complaint from a representative of animal rights NGO People for Animals (PFA).

The five other accused, all snake charmers, were arrested in November and were later let out on bail by a local court.

The five snake charmers were arrested from a banquet hall in Noida on November 3 last year and nine snakes, including five cobras, were rescued from their possession, while 20 ml of suspected snake venom was also seized. According to police, Yadav was not present at the banquet hall then.

In April, the Noida Police filed an over 1,200-page charge sheet in the case.

The charges included are snake trafficking, use of psychotropic substances and organising rave parties, the police had said.

Hyderabad Police withdraws closure report stating Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit 20

Police have filed a closure report before a local court in its probe into the death of Rohith Vemula, a student of the University of Hyderabad, claiming he was not a Dalit and died by suicide in 2016 as he feared that his ”real caste” would be discovered.

The police also gave a clean chit to the accused in the case, citing a lack of evidence.

The then UoH vice chancellor Appa Rao Podile, former BJP MP Bandaru Dattatreya, former BJP MLC N Ramachander Rao, along with some ABVP leaders, were among the accused in the case.

The Cyberabad police that investigated the case informed the court that Rohith Vemula did not belong to the Scheduled Caste and that he was aware of it.

Vemula died by suicide in 2016. ”The deceased had multiple issues worrying him which could have driven him to commit suicide,” the report said.

”In addition to this, the deceased himself was aware that he did not belong to Scheduled Caste and that his mother got him a SC certificate. This could be one of the constant fears as the exposure of the same would result in a loss of his academic degrees that he earned over the years and be compelled to face prosecution.”

Further, the report said, ”Despite best efforts, no evidence could be found to establish that the actions of the accused have driven the deceased to commit suicide.” Vemula’s death in 2016 snowballed into a political controversy with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacking the Central government and the then Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani slamming alleged attempts to project it as a caste battle. The Congress had then attacked Smriti Irani, Bandaru Dattatreya and other BJP and ABVP functionaries in connection with the suicide of Rohith Vemula and over alleged discrimination against students from marginalised sections in universities.

When contacted, Rohith Vemula’s brother Raja Vemula declined to comment.

Citing the closure report, BJP’s IT department in-charge Amit Malviya said, ”truth prevails”.

He said on X, ”Telangana Police files closure report in Rohith Vemula case, claiming he was not a Dalit and died by suicide, absolves then Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, MLC N Ramchander Rao and University of Hyderabad V-C Appa Rao, besides Union Minister Smriti Irani and ABVP leaders. Truth prevails.” He referred to a 2017 post by Rahul Gandhi in which the Congress leader had alleged that Vemula was ”murdered” because he was a ”Dalit” to slam him.

Gandhi’s irresponsible campaign vitiated the environment in higher learning educational institutes across India and put Vemula’s family through immeasurable pain and misery, Malviya alleged.

”But he (Gandhi) had no compunction raising the spectre of caste oppression, to suit his sinister agenda, using thousands of students, particularly from the Dalit community, as canon fodder for his regressive politics. He should apologise to both, the student and Dalit communities,” Malviya said.

Meanwhile, a group of students protested at the University of Hyderabad and raised slogans against BJP, Smriti Irani and former UoH Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao.
