"They have resolved to sit for a long time in opposition…": PM Modi lambasts opposition parties in LS reply 4

“They have resolved to sit for a long time in opposition…”: PM Modi lambasts opposition parties in LS reply Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday targeted the opposition parties, particularly Congress in his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address and said from “every word of their speech, I and the country are now convinced that they have resolved to sit for a long time in the opposition”.

PM Modi targeted the opposition parties almost at the beginning of his speech and said several leaders were looking to change their seats or come to parliament through Rajya Sabha. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the opposition strength will be depleted after the Lok Sabha polls expected to be held in April-May this year.

“People are like God and the way you (opposition) are making efforts, I am convinced that people will bless you and you will move up to the public gallery,” PM Modi said. “I really commend the resolution of the opposition. From every word of their speech, I and the country are now convinced that they have resolved to sit for a long time in the opposition. The way you sat here (in government) for many decades, the same way you resolve to sit there (in opposition),” he said.

“As per your wish, India’s voters will bless you to reach newer heights and soon you will be in the viewing gallery. It seems like you have even lost the will to fight elections,” PM Modi added. About sixty speakers took part in the debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in Lok Sabha. The Budget Session commenced on January 31 and will conclude on February 9.

The Prime Minister said that the Opposition parties have been unable to fulfil their responsibility properly. “They (Opposition) failed to fulfill their responsibility as opposition…I have always said that the country needs a good opposition,” he said.

“I see that many of you (Opposition) have even lost the courage to contest elections. Some seats were changed last time too, I have heard that many people are looking to change their seats this time as well. I have also heard that many people now want to go to Rajya Sabha instead of Lok Sabha. They are looking for their paths by assessing the situation,” he added. The Prime Minister referred to ‘sengol’ at the start of his speech.

“When the President came to this new Parliament building to address all of us and the pride and honour with which Sengol led the entire procession – we were walking behind it. When we become a witness to the reflection of that holy moment of India’s independence in this new tradition in the new Parliament building, the honour of democracy rises.”

Oppn to raise issue of arrest of JMM leader Hemant Soren 6

The opposition INDIA bloc on Friday decided to raise the issue of arrest of JMM leader Hemant Soren in both houses of Parliament.

Sources said the decision was taken at a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, who met this morning in the chamber of Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament House.

This is the first time that opposition leaders have met to discuss their strategy in the Budget Session of Parliament that began on January 31.

The opposition leaders have criticised the arrest of Soren by the Enforcement Directorate and delay in the formation of the new government in the state.

Top Opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and TR Baalu, had earlier met at the residence of Kharge on the day Soren was arrested by the ED.

They are alleging that Soren was forced to quit as chief minister and the new government formation was delayed. Soren was arrested on Wednesday night after resigning as the Jharkhand chief minister.

Farmers get nearly Rs 18 lakh crore as MSP for wheat, paddy crops in last 10 years: President Murmu 8

Paddy and wheat farmers have received nearly Rs 18 lakh crore in the last 10 years as Minimum Support Price (MSP)—a 2.5-fold increase from the preceding decade before 2014, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said, while emphasising the Centre’s focus on making farming activities profitable.

Moreover, she said farmers producing oilseeds and pulses have received over Rs 1.25 lakh crore as MSP in the last 10 years of the current government.

In her first address to a joint sitting of the two Houses in the new Parliament building, Murmu said, ”My government is laying stress on making farming more profitable. Our aim is to reduce the cost of farming while increasing profits.” For the first time, Murmu said, the government has given priority to over 10 crore small farmers in the agricultural policy and schemes.

”In the last 10 years, farmers have received nearly Rs 18 lakh crore as MSP (Minimum Support Price) for paddy and wheat crops. This is 2.5 times more than the preceding 10 years before 2014,” the President said.

”Previously, the government procurement of oilseeds and pulses crops was negligible. In the last decade, farmers producing oilseeds and pulses have received over Rs 1.25 lakh crore as MSP,” she noted.

Highlighting other achievements of the government in the farm sector, Murmu said farmers have received over Rs 2.8 lakh crore so far under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme (PM-KISAN).

Over the past 10 years, there has been a threefold increase in easy loans for farmers from banks.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers paid a premium of Rs 30,000 and they have received a claim of Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

”It is our government that has formulated the agricultural export policy in the country for the first time. This has led to agricultural exports reaching up to Rs 4 lakh crore,” Murmu said.

Regarding fertiliser sector, the President said more than Rs 11 lakh crore have been spent in the last 10 years to provide fertilizers to farmers at affordable prices. The government has established more than 1.75 lakh Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samriddhi Kendra. So far, around 8,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) have been formed. The government is promoting cooperatives in agriculture and therefore, a Ministry of Cooperation has been established for the first time in the country. ”The world’s largest Grain Storage plan has been launched in the cooperative sector. In villages where there are no cooperative societies, 2 lakh societies are being established,” she said.

Schemes worth more than Rs 38,000 crore are being implemented in the fisheries sector, due to which fish production has increased from 95 lakh tonnes to 175 lakh metric tonnes. Inland fisheries production has increased from 61 lakh tonnes to 131 lakh tonnes. Exports in fisheries sector has more than doubled from Rs 30,000 crore to Rs 64,000 crore. For the first time in the country, livestock farmers and fishermen have been given the benefit of Kisan Credit Card. In the last decade, per capita milk availability has increased by 40 per cent. The first free vaccination campaign is underway to protect animals from foot and mouth diseases. So far, more than 50 crore doses have been administered to animals in four phases.

On sugar sector, Murmu said, the government has done ”unprecedented work in the field of ethanol.” ”The country has achieved the target of 12 per cent Ethanol blending. The target of 20 per cent ethanol blending is also going to be accomplished very soon. This will increase the income of our farmers,” she said, adding that the government companies till now have procured ethanol worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore. All these efforts will reduce dependence on foreign countries for the country’s energy needs, the President said.

”Just a few days ago, oil production has started in a new block in the Bay of Bengal. This is a big achievement for the country,” Murmu said.

PIL in HC against Maharashtra govt’s move to grant Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas

Bombay High Court Malegaon Blast Case

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the Maharashtra government’s move to grant Kunbi caste certificates to the Maratha community members in the state.

The PIL, filed on Tuesday by one Mangesh Sasane, who claims to be the chairman of the ‘OBC Welfare Foundation’, said the state government by granting Kunbi certificates to the Maratha community was ”eating into” the reservation of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The petition is likely to come up for hearing on February 6, as per the HC’s website.

The plea challenges five government resolutions issued from 2004 permitting the Marathas to seek Kunbi caste certificates.

”Earlier, the process of granting Kunbi certificates to Marathas was difficult but with every agitation, the process was made easier. This was just to facilitate the Marathas (for reservation),” the petitioner’s advocate Ashish Mishra claimed.

The petition said that in 2021, the Supreme Court declared the Maharashtra government’s decision granting reservation to Maraths as unconstitutional.

”Now the government, by permitting the Marathas to get Kunbi certificate and enjoy reservation benefits, is giving them backdoor entry,” Mishra claimed.

On January 20, Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil began a march to Mumbai from Antarwali Sarathi in Jalna, demanding issuance of Kunbi certificates to all Marathas, which would entitle them to benefits under the quota earmarked for the OBCs.

The state government recently issued a draft notification stating that blood relatives of a Maratha person, who has records to show he belongs to the Kunbi community, would also be recognised as Kunbi.

An agrarian community, Kunbi falls in the OBC category, and Jarange, spearheading the agitation for reservation for the Marathas since last August, has been demanding Kunbi certificates for all Marathas to enable them to avail quota benefits in government jobs and education. Soon after the government issued the notification, the activist called off his march to Mumbai. The government has invited suggestions and objections to the notification till February 16.

PM Modi underlines Budget Session's blueprint, criticises 'trouble-making' parliamentarians 15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media ahead of the Budget session underlining that this would be an interim budget, even as he questioned the conduct of opposition MPs in the last session. In his customary interaction with the media ahead of the Budget Session outside the Parliament building, the Prime Minister started and concluded his address with the salutation ‘Ram Ram’.

“Ram Ram to all of you for the year 2024. At the end of the first session held in the new Parliament building, this Parliament took a very dignified decision of clearing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,” PM Modi said. Noting that country witnessed the Nari Shakti on display in this year’s Republic Day celebrations, the Prime Minister said the Budget session, commenced today with President Droupadi Murmu’s address, is a festival of the Nari Shakti.

“And today the budget session is starting under the guidance of President Droupadi Murmu and tomorrow the interim budget by Nirmala Sitharaman ji is in a way a festival of Nari Shakti,” he said. Hitting out at the ‘trouble-making’ Members of Parliament, he said, “Those who want to disrupt by habit and those who disrupt democracy, today these parliamentarians will look into their own conduct and ask themselves what they did in ten years. Even their own constituents won’t know what they did. Those who showed concern for people’s issues they have done democracy a good turn, but those who only did disruption no one will remember them. This session is one for them to repent and leave good footprints. Please do not let the opportunity go a begging and give the country something good.

While maintaining that this Budget Session is an opportunity to express remorse and leave good foot prints behind, PM Modi requested MPs to not let this opportunity slip. “Perform the best, give the benefit of your thoughts to the House in the interest of the country and fill the country with enthusiasm and excitement,” he said in a request to MPs.

Exuding confidence on his third straight victory in Lok Sabha polls, he said that a complete budget will come after the formation of the new government. “Just before election we don’t submit a full budget, this we will do after a new government is elected. This interim budget is a guideline for us. I am hopeful that the country will touch new heights of prosperity. Development for everyone is taking place. this journey will continue with your blessings. Ram Ram” the Prime Minister said.

The Budget Session of Parliament commenced with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at 11 am on Wednesday. The last session before Lok Sabha polls expected to be held in April-May this year is to provide a total of eight sittings spread over a period of 10 days.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the interim budget on Thursday (February 1).

Indian Navy warship rescues 19 Pakistani nationals, fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates 17

The Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra thwarted the piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, Al Naeemi sailing off the East Coast of Somalia and successfully rescued 19 Pakistani nationals on Monday, the Indian Navy said in an official statement. It is the second rescue operation within a day for the Indian Navy after saving another Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, FV Iman, from Somali pirates, which had 17 crew members onboard in its anti-piracy operations along the east coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden on Monday, an official statement said.

The Indian Navy said that its warship INS Sumitra intercepted the distressed vessel and pressed into action to locate the fishing vessel, which had been boarded by pirates and saved 19 Pakistani national crew members who were taken hostage. The warship acted in accordance with the established SOPs to coerce the pirates for the safe release of the crew along with the boat and ensured the successful release of all 19 crew members along with the boat.

Subsequently, the ship also undertook confirmatory boarding to sanitise and check on the well-being of the crew who were held captive by the Somali pirates. “INS Sumitra, over the course of less than 36 hours, through swift, persistent and relentless efforts has rescued two hijacked Fishing Vessels along with 36 Crew (17 Iranian and 19 Pakistani) in Southern Arabian Sea approximately 850 nm West of Kochi, and prevented misuse of these Fishing Vessels as Mother Ships for further acts of Piracy on Merchant Vessels,” Navy said in a statement.

Earlier, in a rapid and effective response, the Indian Navy’s mission-deployed guided missile destroyer, INS Visakhapatnam, on January 18 addressed a distress call from the Marshall Island-flagged MV Genco Picardy following a drone attack on the night of January 17. INS Visakhapatnam, currently on an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, promptly acknowledged the distress call.

The destroyer intercepted the vessels at midnight on January 18, 2024, to provide immediate assistance.

BJP slams Kharge's 'last election' remark, says polls will be end of dynastic politics 19

Hitting back at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his ”last election” barb, the BJP on Tuesday said dynastic politics under the garb of democracy is coming to an end in the country and emergence of true democracy is in the offing. Kharge on Monday had expressed apprehension that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections would be the last opportunity for the people to save democracy, and ”If Narendra Modi wins another election, there will be dictatorship in the country. The BJP will rule India like Putin in Russia.”

Slamming Kharge for the remarks, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, ”Dynastic politics under the garb of democracy is coming to an end, and they are wondering what will be their future”.

”Whether it is Abdullah and Mufti families in Jammu and Kashmir, or Badals in Punjab, Hooda family in Haryana, all of them lost elections. Ashok Gehlot’s son also lost, Akhilesh Yadav’s wife lost election, in Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter lost election… or the biggest symbol of dynastic politics Rahul Gandhi lost election,” Trivedi said. ”Whatever Kharge ji is saying, the real meaning is dynastic politics under the garb of democracy has been totally discarded by voters in the last election… and the true emergence of true democracy is in the offing”.

Trivedi asserted that ”only two prime ministers were elected democratically in India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. Trivedi said Jawaharlal Nehru was first elected as prime minister with ”zero votes”. He said in April 1946, at the Congress Working Committee meeting, out of 16 Congress committees, all votes except two went to Vallabhbhai Patel. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was chosen as PM by the Congress president and not elected by people, he said.

”Did Indira Gandhi come to power through votes? No, she first became the prime minister by an internal decision of the Congress,” he said, adding Rajiv Gandhi became the prime minister as he got sympathy after his mother Indira Gandhi’s death.
