Baba Ramdev cries foul, stating propaganda by doctors over SC's warning 2

Following the Supreme Court’s warning, Baba Ramdev held a press conference in which he slammed doctors. He stated that propaganda was being carried out against Ayurveda and that he and his associates were willing to “face the death penalty” in order to expose the “propaganda by a group of doctors” against Ayurveda.

Ramdev successfully diverted attention away from the topic by playing sympathy cards. His remarks came a day after the Supreme Court slammed Patanjali Ayurveda for false advertising.

Speaking to the press, Ramdev said that though allopathy might be powerful and have more hospitals and resources as well as a vocal lobby, he added that Ayurveda had a rich legacy and vowed to keep on fighting those spreading lies against Ayurveda. Ramdev further said that he and his company respect the Supreme Court, but added that action should be taken against those indulging in spreading lies about Ayurveda.

“If we are liars, fine us Rs 1,000 crore, and we also don’t mind facing the death penalty. But if we are not liars, then punish the ones who are spreading false propaganda. “Ramdev and Patanjali have been targeted for the past 5 years,” said Baba Ramdev in his comments in the PC, alleging that he is being targeted by “multinational companies” who are afraid that Patanjali will eat into their profits.

The Apex Court issued a warning to Patanjali, stating that the Ayurvedic company should refrain from claiming to have a cure for diseases for which there is no treatment. The court also stated that if the practice continues, a penalty of Rs 1 crore will be imposed for each claim. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) initiated the petition.

“All such false and misleading advertisements of Patanjali Ayurved have to stop immediately. The court will take any such infraction very seriously…,” a bench comprising justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra orally observed while hearing a plea of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

On August 23, 2022, the top court issued notices to the Union health ministry and the Ministry of Ayush and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. on the plea of the IMA alleging a smear campaign by Ramdev against the vaccination drive and modern medicines. During the brief hearing, the bench asked Patanjali Ayurved not to publish misleading claims and advertisements against modern systems of medicine. The top court, while issuing notices on the plea, had come down heavily on Ramdev for criticizing allopathy and allopathic practitioners, saying he needed to be restrained from abusing the doctors and other systems of treatment.

IMA had referred to several advertisements that allegedly projected the allopath and the doctors in a poor light, saying that “disparaging” statements have also been made by firms engaged in the production of ayurvedic medicines to mislead the general public. These commercials say that the medical practitioners themselves are dying despite taking modern medicines, the counsel for the IMA said. The IMA had said that a concerted effort was being made to discourage vaccinations, including the COVID-19 jab drive and the use of allopathic medicines in the country.

Delhi HC directs swift action on tree deconcretisation, seeks accountability from civic authorities 4

The Delhi High Court has directed civic authorities to submit a detailed timeframe for the expeditious removal of concrete around trees in the national capital.

Justice Singh directed the authorities, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), to submit an affidavit outlining the total number of trees concretised, those successfully deconcretised, and those pending deconcretisation.

The directive came during the hearing of a plea addressing the pressing issue of tree preservation in the national Capital.

The court sought an explanation for any delays and a precise timeframe for completing the outstanding deconcretisation.

The court mandated the submission of the affidavit within two weeks, to be verified within four weeks thereafter, with the next hearing scheduled for January 29.

The plea underscored the authorities’ inaction concerning tree concretisation in Vasant Vihar, stressing on the detrimental impact on the environment.

Previously, the court had reprimanded the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, calling tree concretisation as a severe infringement of human rights due to its profound environmental consequences.

Highlighting the constitutional guarantee of citizens’ freedom of movement, the court stressed on the significance of tree-lined avenues and footpaths, stating that civic amenities should not impede this fundamental right.

Qatar says mediation a success, humanitarian pause in Israel-Hamas conflict achieved 6

Qatar on Wednesday announced the success of the mediation process, which has resulted in a humanitarian pause in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The State of Qatar, in a statement, said that the success of its joint mediation efforts undertaken with the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) resulted in an agreement for a humanitarian pause.

The starting time of the pause will be announced within the next 24 hours and last for four days, subject to extension, the statement further said. According to the Qatari government, the agreement includes the release of 50 civilian women and children hostages currently held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of a number of Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons. The number of those released will increase in later stages of implementing the agreement.

The humanitarian pause will also allow the entry of a larger number of humanitarian convoys and relief aid, including fuel designated for humanitarian needs. The statement also said that the State of Qatar affirms its commitment to ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, stop the bloodshed, and protect civilians. In this regard, the State of Qatar appreciates the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America in reaching this agreement

Earlier, in an unprecedented vote, the Israel cabinet approved an agreement to secure the release of roughly 50 hostages who were abducted into Gaza during the October 7 terror attack. According to the Israel Prime Minister’s office, the government approved the outline of the first stage of achieving this goal, according to which at least 50 hostages—women and children—will be released over four days, during which a pause in the fighting will be held. The release of every additional ten hostages will result in one additional day of pause. The Prime Minister’s office, however, stated that the Government of Israel, the IDF, and the security services will continue the war in order to return home all of the hostages, complete the elimination of Hamas, and ensure that there will be no new threat to the State of Israel from Gaza.

Not all details of the agreement have been formally released to the public. Speaking before the Israeli Cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to ending Hamas.

“We will not relent in our efforts until we redeem them all, until we return them all—the boys and girls, the mothers and fathers, the young men and women, the elderly men and women, the male and female soldiers—all of them. In war, there are stages, and in returning the hostages, there are stages, but we will not relent until we achieve an absolute victory and until we bring them all back. This is my sacred duty, of all of us” he said. The current agreement has sparked hope of relative peace returning to the troubled region of the Middle East, which has been engulfed in conflict since the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel.

World Cup 2023: Indian cricketers lost game but won hearts 8

It was expected because New Zealand and Australia players have more strategy and less show off. Indians have always pampered the cricketer’s way beyond the game. There are many reasons why India lost the final to Australia. Even after the defeat, the Indian team has proven itself to be one of the greatest ever in ODIs. However, it was also an imperfect team from the beginning.

The stadium was full of celebrities and politicians, including PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The moment India lost the toss, Australia had the advantage of batting second on a settled pitch with no challenge around, swing, or seam for most of the 2nd inning. India had the best ever World Cup outing as a campaign. But it always comes down to the clutch moments, and sometimes conditions can scuttle plans. But we should adapt. I felt India’s bowling in the final was consistent, but 240 is very hard to defend in the dew. Let’s not take credit away from the Australian team. They played very well; they grabbed the key moments—the hallmark of any winning side.

Australia is a tough opponent in any cricket format, and they have a proven track record of success in World Cups. They are currently ranked number one in the ICC ODI rankings and have a strong batting lineup, a potent bowling attack, and a well-rounded fielding unit. Their experience and ability to perform under pressure make them a serious threat to India’s World Cup aspirations. Moreover, New Zealand is another excellent team, particularly in white-ball cricket. They are the runner-up of the 2019 Cricket World Cup edition, and they possess a destructive batting lineup, a versatile bowling attack, and a dynamic fielding unit. Their ability to score big totals and chase down targets effectively makes them a dangerous opponent for India.

When it comes to India, most players are too overpampered and glorified by the media and diehard fans who don’t have anything in life but cricket. We are too obsessed with the personal records of players, which is not the case with any country or player. As a result, you see every player and whole team was overly optimistic and undervalued opponents. This attitude worked well until the final day. Reality hit hard in the final. Rohit thought he could hit every ball from each bowler out of the stadium. Virat thought of playing a big knock, even if it was in 200 balls. K.L. Rahul couldn’t do much. And finally, the greatest t20 player of all time, SKY, though he is Maxwell to hit every ball with a reverse sweep into the stands.

On the other hand, Australia maintained its cool and did its job. Their fielding was fabulous. Stopping every boundary frustrated Indian players to the core. In the second inning, after taking three wickets, the Indian players were overconfident; they almost thought that they had won the match. Even the people in the stadium were in celebration mode. India almost lost its game here.

Overconfident Indian bowlers kept on giving up extra runs in a rush to take wickets. Once Head and Labuschagne built a good partnership, it was too late. By this time, our egos were punctured but it was too late to do anything. Australia completely outplayed India with their excellent fielding in the first inning. The bowlers were accurate and thanks to their fielding, they were economical. With regard to field placements and bowling, they made plans for each Indian cricketer and executed them successfully. They knew their game and their target. There was tremendous sink and coordination among the players.

The fourth-wicket partnership between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne completely pulled the tide in their favor. Head took an unbelievable catch from Rohit Sharma that certainly was the turning point of the match. After Rohit’s wicket, India could only score four boundaries in 40 overs after the first powerplay. In the second inning, Indian bowlers began well but lost steam after reducing Australia to 47/3. They looked nervous and hopeless with every passing moment. They failed to show determination on the field. It was evident from their body language that they were already panicking. The presence of the PM and big stars actually created pressure on them; at this point, they were just playing to save their souls, not as sportsmen. Except for Rohit, no one showed courage. 4 boundaries in 40 overs of cricket—that’s where India lost the match.

Besides these two teams, India could face challenges from other strong contenders like New Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan. However, Australia and England stand out as the most likely threats to India’s World Cup hopes based on their current form and overall strengths.

The entire nation was sad but for a change, this time no cricketer’s wife was verbally assaulted for the loss but the PM was blamed for it. He was tagged as an unlucky person and a bad omen on social media. But still, to control the damage and for the sake of makeover, after the World Cup final, Narendra Modi lauded the Indian men’s cricket team for their 10 consecutive wins in the tournament and asked them to motivate each other as he met them after their loss to Australia. He shared a brief video on social media of his meeting with the squad soon after the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Even the Indian public was kind to them and people showered their love on the players.

Mumbaikar can reach Pune in 90 minutes with Trans Harbour Link road opening 10

The long-expected Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) in Mumbai is all set to commence operations on December 25th, revolutionizing travel between Mumbai and Pune. This innovative project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, enabling commuters to cover the distance in just 90 minutes.

The BJP announced in a social media post that the Mumbai-Trans Harbour Link will be thrown open for public use on December 25. However, officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have expressed surprise over the claim, saying several components of the project that will allow the stretch to be pliable are yet to be completed, and it will be difficult to meet the December 25 deadline.

The MTHL is not only a game-changer for commuters between Mumbai and Pune but also offers a swift solution to ease traffic congestion during peak hours in the Nhava Sheva area of Navi Mumbai. By providing a short 1.5-kilometer detour, the MTHL allows vehicles to bypass congested areas, potentially eliminating up to 45 minutes of traffic-related delays.

Regular travelers to Pune, habituated to the regular route involving P D’Mello Road, Freeway, Sion, Panvel Expressway, and Mumbai-Pune Expressway, can now opt for a more efficient alternative. The suggested route includes P D’Mello Road-Freeway (exit before Sewri)-MTHL, connecting to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway via Chirle and passing through the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport route.

This transformative infrastructure project is expected to reshape daily commuting patterns, offering a time-saving and more efficient alternative for travelers between Mumbai and Pune. The MTHL is poised to redefine connectivity and contribute to a smoother travel experience for thousands of commuters.

SC slams Delhi govt over not releasing funds for Regional Rapid Transport System

The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Delhi government for a breach of undertaking given to it to provide funds for the Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project and directed it to transfer the funds meant for advertising to the project. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia however put the order in abeyance for a week and said that the order would come into force if the Delhi government did not provide the required funds for the project.

While hearing an application filed by NCRTC against not releasing the funds for the project despite the court’s order, the bench pulled up Delhi’s AAP government and warned it of attaching its advertisement budget. “Why you (Delhi government) have not complied with (court’s) order? We will stay your (Delhi government’s) advertising budget. We will attach it and take it here,” said Justice Kaul said.

Expressing disappointment with the stand of the Delhi government, the apex court observed that there was a “gross breach” of the assurances given by the Delhi government. It said in April, the apex court had specifically mentioned that the balance amount payable by the Delhi government was to be paid promptly for the timely implementation of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, the Delhi-Alwar corridor and the Delhi-Panipat corridor.

During the hearing, the bench noted that the budgetary allocation for advertisements for the last three years was almost Rs 1100 crores and for this financial year is Rs 550 crore. “Gross breach of directions by this court of assurance given on behalf of state government… In April, we had specifically mentioned the balance amount payable by the Delhi government and directed them to pay the amount promptly. Amount is not paid… Details show that the three-year budgetary provision was almost Rs 1100 crores, while for this financial year was Rs 550 crores… If such national projects are affected, and if money is being spent on advertisement, we would be inclined to ask the money to be directed to the infrastructure,” said the bench.

As senior advocate Meenakshi Arora, representing the Delhi government, sought one week’s time, the bench listed after a week, and said if the fund allocation is not made in the meantime, then the order will come into operation. “We are thus constrained to direct the funds allocated for advertisement purposes to be transferred to the project in question. At the request of the counsel’s request, we will keep this order in abeyance for a period of one week. If the funds are not transferred, the order will come into operation,” ordered the bench.

In its application, National Capital Regional Transport Corporation (NCRTC) the apex court had directed the Delhi government to contribute to the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Project Rs 500 crores within ten days. However, there is still a balanced amount of Rs 415 crores left. The Delhi government in spite of a delay of more than six months since the order dated April 21, 2023, was passed by the apex court has released only an amount of Rs 80 crores against the due amount which is highly disturbing/discouraging and clear non-compliance of the order passed by this court, the application stated.

It added that giving early approval and making budgetary provisions for the Delhi-Alwar corridor and Delhi-Panipat corridor and release of the instalment amount of Rs 100 and 50 crores respectively for these corridors for the financial year 2023-24 is pending.

OpenAI appoints new boss as Sam Altman joins Microsoft in Silicon Valley twist

OpenAI appoints new boss as Sam Altman joins Microsoft in Silicon Valley twist 13

OpenAI named ex-Twitch boss Emmett Shear as interim CEO, while outgoing chief Sam Altman moved to backer Microsoft, in a surprise turn of events that clouded the future of the startup at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom. The appointments, settled late on Sunday, followed Altman’s abrupt ousting just days earlier as CEO of the ChatGPT maker and ended speculation that he could return.

By Monday, close to all of OpenAI’s more than 700 employees threatened to quit in a letter demanding the resignation of the board and reinstatement of Altman and former President Greg Brockman, according to a copy viewed by Reuters and a person familiar with the matter. The document was signed by employees including OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, the board member who fired Altman. “I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we’ve built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company,” Sutskever said in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

Hours later, Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sought to quell fears of a collapse at OpenAI. Altman wrote on X that his top priority “remains to ensure OpenAI continues to thrive” and said he was “committed to fully providing continuity of operations. Nadella, during a CNBC interview, said he was open to staff staying at OpenAI or coming to Microsoft. He said governance at the ChatGPT maker needed to change no matter where Altman ended up.

Microsoft has rushed in to attract some of the biggest names that left OpenAI, including co-founder Brockman, to keep key talent out of the hands of rivals including Alphabet’s Google and Amazon.com while seeking to stabilize the startup in which it invested billions of dollars. OpenAI’s newly appointed interim head moved quickly to dismiss speculation that its board ousted Altman due to a dispute over the safety of powerful AI models. Shear vowed to open an investigation into the firing, consider new governance for OpenAI and continue its path of making available technology like its viral chatbot.

“I’m not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models,” Shear said. The startup dismissed Altman on Friday after a “breakdown of communications,” according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Among various reported calls to find a successor, OpenAI’s board of directors approached rival Anthropic’s CEO about replacing Altman and potentially merging the two AI startups, two people briefed on the matter told Reuters. Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei declined. The organization that governs OpenAI is a nonprofit. Its four-person board as of Friday consisted of three independent directors holding no equity in OpenAI, as well as chief scientist Sutskever.

In the letter calling for the board’s resignation, employees also demanded the appointment of two new independent directors, such as former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor and Will Hurd, a former United States representative. “Your actions have made it obvious that you are incapable of overseeing OpenAI,” the employees said in the letter.

“Microsoft has assured us that there are positions for all OpenAI employees at this new subsidiary should we choose to join,” they added. An OpenAI spokesperson referred Reuters to Altman’s comment on the goal to make the startup thrive.

DIFFERENT IDEALS

For years, OpenAI employees have been split between different ideals, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Some – including many who joined before 2022 – are focused on building artificial general intelligence (AGI) safely with sufficient guard rails, while others recruited after the success of ChatGPT are more keen on quickly building and launching products in the tradition of Silicon Valley startups, one of the people said. Shear said prior to his appointment as interim CEO that he was “in favor of slowing down” AI’s rapid development.

Analyst Richard Windsor, of Radio Free Mobile, said in a note: “This weekend was simply the detonation of a bomb that has been waiting to go off.” Altman is becoming CEO of a new research group inside Microsoft and will be joined by other departing OpenAI colleagues who quit following his ouster, Nadella said in posts on X.

Those joining Altman at Microsoft include senior researchers Szymon Sidor and Jakub Pachocki, according to Brockman. Microsoft has bet heavily on the startup, releasing what it called AI copilots to business customers based on OpenAI’s technology. OpenAI researchers have viewed Microsoft’s vast reserves of computing power as essential to the development of superintelligent machines.

SemiAnalysis, a research and consulting firm, said in a note on Monday that any attempt by OpenAI’s nonprofit board to slow down AI’s development out of safety concerns had backfired. “Now the world’s largest corporations without clear oversight/commitment to safe and responsible AGI is in the drivers seat,” the note said.

Microsoft had supported a return by Altman to OpenAI, according to sources, a move that seemed likely only hours prior to Monday’s announcements.
