All the reasons you might be having night sweats – and when to see a doctor 2

You’ve finished a workout, so you’re hot and drenched with perspiration – but soon you begin to feel cool again. Later, it’s a sweltering summer evening and you’re finding it hard to sleep, so you kick off the covers.

Sweating is a normal part of the body’s cooling system, helping to release heat and maintain optimal body temperature. But regularly waking up during the night, soaked through from excessive sweating, is not.

Night sweats are repeated episodes of excessive or intense sweating at night. They are an unpleasant part of life for many people.

Many conditions and factors can trigger night sweats by changing the body’s tightly regulated temperature set point, at which the body attempts to maintain its core temperature.

Some triggers are harmless (a hot bedroom) or even related to positive lifestyle changes (exercise). Others have an underlying cause like menopause, infection, disease, or medication.

Temperature control and sweating The hypothalamus, located in the brain, is part of the endocrine system and the temperature control centre for the body.

It contains temperature sensors that receive information from nerve cells (thermoreceptors) located centrally (in the organs) and peripherally in the skin.

Thermoreceptors detect changes in body temperature, sending signals back to the hypothalamus. These signals will either activate sweating to cool the body or shivering to warm the body.

Hormones and night sweats Anyone, regardless of age or gender, can experience night sweats. But women experience night sweats more often than men, largely because menopause and associated changing hormone levels are a leading cause.

Approximately 80 per cent of women experience hot flashes (also called hot flushes) or night sweats after menopause (when periods have ceased for 12 months) and during perimenopause (the time leading up to it).

While both hot flashes and night sweats produce a feeling of overheating, they are different experiences associated with menopause. Hot flashes occur during the day, are transient episodes of flushing and may involve sweating.

Night sweats occur at night and involve an intense period of sweating. Changing oestrogen levels are thought to impact norepinephrine and serotonin levels, two neurotransmitters that influence temperature regulation in the hypothalamus.

Hormones also influence night sweats in men, particularly those with low testosterone levels, known as hypogonadism. Around 38 per cent of men aged 45 years or older have low testosterone levels but it can affect men at any age.

Infections, diseases, and medications When fighting infections, our body temperature often rises. This can stimulate sweating to cool and decrease body temperature.

Minor infections, like the common cold, can cause night sweats. They are also a symptom of serious infections such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and diseases such as Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, night sweats are rarely the only symptom present.

Medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), corticosteroids, thyroid hormone replacement, and methadone can cause night sweats. These medications affect parts of the brain and neurotransmitters that control and stimulate sweating.

Regular alcohol (particularly alcohol dependence) and recreational drug use can also increase the risk of night sweats.

Stress, snoring and strenuous exercise Night sweats are commonly reported by people with anxiety.

Psychological stress activates the body’s fight or flight system, releasing neurotransmitters that increase heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. This causes the body to heat up, at which point it starts sweating to cool the body back down. Night sweats may also increase anxiety, causing more sweating, which in turn leads to less sleep and more anxiety.

If anxiety causes night sweats and this causes distress, it’s best to get up, move around, and engage in a calming routine, preferably in a dark or dimly lit room.

Night sweats have similarly been connected with sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea, where the airway is repeatedly blocked during sleep and there is loud snoring.

About one-third of people with obstructive sleep apnoea regularly experience night sweats. The exact cause is undetermined but research shows it is linked with low blood oxygen levels (hypoxemia) and/or high blood pressure.

People can experience night sweats after high-intensity workouts. Vigorous exercise can stimulate the thyroid, increasing basal metabolic rate and body temperature for up to 14 hours post exercise. So night sweats can occur even after a vigorous morning workout.

Night sweats can indicate overtraining and/or under-fueling. If not enough calories are consumed to support the increase in training, blood sugar could drop, and you could experience hypoglycaemia, which can cause night sweats.

When to seek help and 5 things to try There are numerous health conditions and medications that can cause night sweats and interfere with sleep.

If night sweats are regular, distressing, interfere with sleep or are accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue or weight loss (not related to lifestyle or diet changes) talk to a doctor to help determine the cause. They might suggest alternative medications to any you’re taking or recommend tests or investigations.

In the meantime, you can try the following ideas: 1. sleep in a cool room and use a fan if needed 2. don’t overdress for bed. Wear breathable cotton or linen pyjamas 3. choose lightweight bedding you can kick off. Avoid synthetic fibres and flannel bedding 4. consider a cooling mattress or pillow and avoid those (such as foam ones) that can limit airflow 5. avoid spicy foods, caffeine or alcohol before bed.

156 youths cheated of Rs 5 lakh while trying to buy passes for Falguni Pathak’s garba night 4

Around 156 youths were allegedly cheated of about Rs 5 lakh while trying to buy passes for “garba night” by famous singer and dandiya dancer Falguni Pathak in Mumbai when a man claiming to be an authorized dealer for the event failed to deliver the discounted tickets, city police officials said on Sunday.

According to the Mumbai Police, the youth have filed a complaint with them.

The police further said that the accused, Vishal Shah, who claimed to be an authorised dealer of Falguni Pathak’s event in Borivali (West), was selling passes for Rs 3,300, which is lower than the actual price of Rs 4,500.

The complainant, a Kandivali resident who runs a painting business, decided to buy the passes along with two of his friends.

Later, more than 153 persons they knew also expressed interest in buying the passes.

The youth and his two friends collected cash from the others and on Thursday they informed Shah that they were ready to buy 156 passes.

According to the FIR filed by the victims, Shah asked them to reach a place on New Link Road, Borivali (West), from where a man would collect the money and also said that he himself would hand over the passes to them later.

Later, Shah gave them an address in Yogi Nagar and asked them to collect the passes from there.

On reaching the spot, the trio were unable find anything there and also found that Shah’s phone was switched off. The youths then filed a complaint at MHB Colony police station.

On Friday, the police registered a case against accused Vishal Shah and others under sections 406,420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and started searching for the accused.

2 Israeli security officers of Indian origin killed in Hamas attack: Official sources 6

At least two Israeli women security officers of Indian origin were killed in the unprecedented attack carried out by the Palestinian militant group Hamas earlier this month, official sources and people from the community confirmed on Sunday.

Lieutenant Or Moses, 22, a commander in the Home Front Command, from Ashdod and Inspector Kim Dokraker, a Border Police officer in the police’s Central District, were killed in the attack on October 7, official sources confirmed.

Both of them are said to have died on duty in combat.

According to army officials, so far 286 army soldiers and 51 police officers have been killed in the conflict.

There could be more victims as Israel continues to confirm the identity of the dead and search for those missing or possibly kidnapped, several community members told PTI.

One young woman from the community, Shahaf Talker, who managed to survive the attack with her friend shared a testimony of what she went through that day with PTI through her grandfather.

Still in shock and unable to speak because of the mental agony, the 24-year-old woman thought that putting it out in writing would ease some of her stress, said her grandfather Yaacov Talker who migrated from Mumbai at the age of 11 in 1963.

“Early today Shahaf went to the funeral of some of her friends who were killed in the massacre that happened at the rave music party where about 270 youngsters were killed in mass killings carried out by Hamas after infiltrating Israeli territory,” said Yaacov who now lives in Petah Tikva, a town in northern Israel.

According to Shahaf’s testimony, on October 7, she and her friend Yanir, who was at the party, saw the rockets flying over their heads.

“What is that?” I asked him. “Missiles,” he answered. “We started running to the car, and I fell on the floor crying and Yanir picked me up, grabbed my hand and told me “Everything is fine, let’s fly away, we have to get home”,” she said.

“We got into the car and started driving, we drove fast. The police said to turn right but this was not the road to Tel Aviv, so we turned back and turned to the other side, the mistake of our lives or we were saved, only God knows, in the direction of Tel Aviv. They were waiting for us, blocking the road, three vans, about 8 terrorists,” she said.

“Yanir quickly realised that they were aiming guns at us and turned the car around as fast as he could. One bullet hit the front windshield, passed right between me and Yanir… the whole car was sprayed with bullets, and all the windows were broken,” Shahaf said.

She said the militants were firing at them without hesitation. “We drove to the other side; they were waiting for us there as well. We met a couple of friends who told us there were terrorists on the other side as well, we all got out of the car and ran. We tried to hide ourselves in the bush,” she said.

“Until it was quiet, not exactly quiet, just fewer bullets flying overhead, we checked what was happening and decided to return to the vehicles,” she said.

Shahaf said they drove until they saw a gas station. “Yanir decided to head there and he found 18 people from the same party inside the gas station,” she recalled.

“I can’t believe we survived this… we were left with one security guard with a gun. For three hours, we were dying of fear, calling everyone possible to save us,” she said.

“The army arrived, (they said) ‘run to the vehicles, as many people as possible in each vehicle, save yourselves, just drive’,” she recalled.

“We succeeded, Moshav Teluma’s security personnel waved at us from the fence and led us to the most perfect family in the world, who took care of us,” she added.

She felt sorry for the victims of the attack by Hamas militants.

“This story is sad, I was saved but piles of my friends are lying in piles of corpses, may your memory be blessed, they abandoned us in the field, I’m sorry. Sharing it so that everyone knows the horrors!!!” she added.

Her grandfather, Yaacov, told PTI that it has been very difficult the past week to deal with the trauma she went through.

“She is still in shock. It will take her a lot of time to come out of it,” he said.

Sheeja Anand, a caregiver from Kerala who was injured in the attack, is now stable, sources said. The caregiver suffered injuries in her hands and leg in the rocket attack on October 7 in the northern Israeli city of Ashkelon. She was immediately provided treatment at a nearby hospital.

10 gms gold to eligible brides, free internet to students likely to figure in Congress manifesto for Telangana polls 8

Ten grams of gold to eligible women at the time of marriage, besides Rs one lakh cash and free internet to students are some of the promises that are likely to figure in the Telangana Congress manifesto for the November 30 Assembly polls.

According to D Sridhar Babu, chairman of the TPCC manifesto committee, the gold is in addition to Rs one lakh cash, under the party’s ‘Mahalakshmi’ guarantee.

Presently, the BRS government, under Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak Schemes, offer one-time financial assistance of Rs 1,00,116 at the time of marriage for brides who are residents of Telangana, who have completed 18 years of age at the time of marriage and whose parental income does not exceed Rs 2 lakh per annum. ”One tula (10 gms) of gold will be given. This (gold value) comes to about Rs 50,000 to 55, 000,” Sridhar Babu told PTI.

A member of the manifesto committee said the party is also planning to include free internet for students in the manifesto.

”After coming to power we will talk to internet service providers and work out modalities,” the member said.

When contacted Sravan Dasoju, BRS spokesperson said the Congress government in Karnataka is not able to implement their poll promises and they can promise anything under the moon.

”Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, also known as KCR, is a pioneer in bringing out and implementing innovative policies and programmes for the poor which were never imagined by any other political party in independent India,” Dasoju said.

He further said BRS president Rao is known for generosity and, importantly, his compassion towards the poor and downtrodden.

KCR on Sunday announced BRS manifesto promising LPG cylinder at Rs 400 and a rise in social pensions, countering the Congress party’s ”six guarantees” for the Telangana polls.

Under the ‘Mahalakshmi’ guarantee, the Congress promises to provide Rs 2,500 per month financial assistance to women, LPG cylinder at Rs 500, free travel for women in TSRTC buses across the state.

Ahead of the coming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister MK Stalin said on Saturday that the INDIA Alliance is not just an election alliance but a policy alliance and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government will not remain in the centre after the 2024 polls.

Speaking at the Women’s Rights conference organised by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Chennai’s Nandanam YMCA ground, Stalin said that after the 2024 elections, the BJP will not remain in the centre.

“After the 2024 elections, the Modi government will not remain in the centre. INDIA alliance is not just an election alliance but a policy alliance. The Central Government is doing a political conspiracy against women from backward communities,” Stalin said.

Further speaking on the women’s reservation bill, Stalin said that the government presented this bill with a hidden motive to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women but limiting it to population census and delimitation for its implementation.

“All religions should get equal rights and whatever we need should be given equally to everyone,” Stalin added.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, speaking at DMK’s Women’s Rights Conference in Chennai on Saturday, said that until the Women’s Reservation Bill gets implemented, the fight for it will continue.

“The Women’s Reservation Bill has been passed. But it still has a long way to go. And when the bill will be implemented is our question. We are going to fight for it till we don’t get it,” Sonia Gandhi said.

Sonia Gandhi also participated in the Women’s Rights Conference organized by DMK at Nandanam YMCA Ground in Chennai.

“It was a vital step towards the reservation of a similar one-third of seats in the legislative bodies which the Congress pioneered in Parliament and outside. Now the Women’s Reservation Bill has finally been passed due to our relentless persistence and efforts—of all of us, not just the Congress. However, as we all know, there is still a long way to go,” she said.

While addressing a session of the Women’s Rights conference organized by DMK in Chennai’s Nandanam YMCA ground, Supriya Sule said that the state of Maharashtra is also fighting like the way Tamil Nadu resists the “cooperative federalism” in the country.

“Right now, the way the invasion from Delhi which is attacking the cooperative federalism of this country – the way Tamil Nadu is fighting, so are we fighting in Maharashtra. Unitedly, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra will make sure that nobody will go against our cooperative federalism and take away our rights from us,” she said.

US Prez Biden calls Israel’s Netanyahu, Palestine Prez Abbas amid escalating tension in Gaza 11

Amid escalating tension in Gaza after the Hamas attacks against Israel, US President Joe Biden on Saturday called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority as the US began moving USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (CSG) to the Eastern Mediterranean.

In his call with Abbas, Biden condemned Hamas‘ brutal attacks on Israel and reiterated that the militant group “does not stand for the Palestinian people’s right to dignity and self-determination”, the White House said.

Biden, in his call with Netanyahu, updated him on US military support and reiterated his warning against anyone seeking to expand the conflict, according to a readout of the call.

“This afternoon, President Biden spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu to reiterate unwavering US support for Israel. President Biden updated Prime Minister Netanyahu on US military support and reiterated his warning against anyone seeking to expand the conflict,” the White House said.

Biden discussed with Netanyahu the US coordination with the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and others in the region to ensure innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care. Biden affirmed his support for all efforts to protect civilians, it said.

“As more information comes to light about Hamas’ brutal atrocities committed over the past week, Biden reiterated the need for all countries to unequivocally condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization that does not represent the aspirations of the Palestinian people,” the White House said.
Biden spoke to Abbas and condemned the attacks by Hamas on Israel.

“Abbas briefed Biden on his engagement in the region and his efforts to bring urgently needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. Biden offered Abbas and the Palestinian Authority his full support for these important and ongoing efforts,” the White House said.

Biden discussed with Abbas US efforts to work with the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and others to ensure humanitarian supplies reach civilians in Gaza.

“Finally, President Biden detailed US efforts to coordinate with partners to prevent the conflict from widening, and the two leaders discussed the need to preserve stability in the West Bank and the broader region,” it said.

The United States has intensified its global engagement amid an imminent Israeli plan to send its foot soldiers to Gaza. Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Saturday.

“As part of the administration’s intensive diplomatic engagements to stand with Israel and condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas, the Secretary reiterated US support for Israel’s right to defend itself and called for an immediate cessation of Hamas’ attacks and the release of all hostages,” the State Department said.

During the call, Blinken also discussed the importance of maintaining stability in the region and discouraging other parties from entering the conflict.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday directed the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (CSG) to begin moving to the Eastern Mediterranean.

“As part of our effort to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts toward widening this war following Hamas’s attack on Israel, the Strike Group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107) and USS Mason (DDG 87), and Carrier Air Wing 3, with nine aircraft squadrons, and embarked headquarters staffs,” Austin said.

The Eisenhower CSG will join the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which arrived earlier this week. The Ford CSG includes the USS Normandy, USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney, and USS Roosevelt. Earlier in the week, the US Air Force announced deployment to the region of squadrons of F-15, F-16 and A-10 fighter aircraft, he said.

“The increases to US force posture signal the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s security and our resolve to deter any state or non-state actor seeking to escalate this war,” Austin said.

Austin spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to continue consultations on Israel’s response to Hamas’ attacks, following his visit to Israel a day earlier. During the call, he underscored the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel’s security.

“During the call he discussed the importance of adhering to the law of war, including civilian protection obligations, and addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza while Israel continues its operations to restore security. Finally, he discussed Hamas’ abhorrent taking of civilian hostages,” the Pentagon said in a readout of the call.

Blinken, who is currently in the Middle East, met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh on Saturday. He highlighted the United States’ unwavering focus on halting the attacks by Hamas against Israel.

The two discussed continued engagement with regional partners to prevent the spread of conflict in the region and their shared commitment to taking steps to help protect civilians.

They also resolved to continue to work together to end the devastating conflict in Sudan and secure a lasting peace in Yemen through a UN-mediated Yemeni-Yemeni peace process, said a readout of the call. Later in the day, he also met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi to discuss the terrorist attacks on Israel.

“The Secretary expressed appreciation for the UAE’s clear condemnation of Hamas’ heinous attacks on Israeli civilians and continued diplomatic engagement to prevent the spread of conflict,” said a readout of the call.

Blinken and Sheikh Mohammed also discussed their shared commitment to building a more integrated, secure, and prosperous region, and reaffirmed the importance of the strategic partnership between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, it said.

Sam Manekshaw, a Bahadur Jawan of India

Sam Manekshaw, a Bahadur Jawan of India 15

A Parsi boy, Sam Manekshaw, was born in Amritsar, Punjab. His father, Hormizd Manekshaw, was a successful doctor, and his mother, Hilla, née Mehta, was a social worker. Both of his parents were Parsis who moved to Amritsar from the city of Valsad in the coastal Gujarat region.

Manekshaw’s parents had left Mumbai in 1903 for Lahore, where Hormizd had friends and where he was to begin practicing medicine. However, by the time their train halted at Amritsar, Hilla found it impossible to travel any further due to her advanced pregnancy. The couple had to pause their journey to pursue help from the station master, who advised that in her condition, Hilla should not attempt any journey. By the time Hilla recovered from the delivery, the couple had found Amritsar a decent place to settle. Hormusji soon ventured into a clinic and pharmacy in Amritsar. The couple had six children over the following decade, numbering four sons and two daughters (Fali, Cilla, Jan, Sheru, Sam, and Jami). Sam was their fifth child and third son. Sam’s parents were rich and reputed people from Punjab. They gave the best education to their children.

As a boy, Manekshaw was naughty and hyperactive. His early ambition was to study medicine and become a doctor like his father. He completed his primary schooling in Punjab and then went to Sherwood College, Nainital. In 1929, he left the college at the age of 15 with his Junior Cambridge Certificate, and in 1931, he passed his Senior Cambridge with distinction. Manekshaw then asked his father to send him to London to study medicine, but his father refused on the grounds that he was not old enough; in addition, he was already supporting the studies of Manekshaw’s two elder brothers, both of whom were studying engineering in London. Instead, Manekshaw entered the Hindu Sabha College and, in April 1932, appeared for his final exams, passing with a third division in science.

In the meantime, the Indian Military College Committee, which was set up in 1931 and chaired by Field Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode, recommended the establishment of a military academy in India to train Indians for officer commissions in the army. A three-year course was proposed, with an entry age of 18 to 20 years. Candidates would be selected on the basis of an examination conducted by the Public Service Commission. On October 1, 1932, Manekshaw was one of the fifteen cadets to be selected through an open competition. Manekshaw placed sixth in the order of merit. Manekshaw was selected as part of the first batch of cadets. Called “The Pioneers”, his class also produced Smith Dun and Muhammad Musa Khan, future commanders-in-chief of Burma and Pakistan, respectively. Although the academy was inaugurated by Chetwode on December 10, 1932, the cadets’ military training commenced on October 1, 1932.

At the time of Manekshaw’s commissioning, it was standard practice for newly commissioned Indian officers to be initially attached to a British regiment before being sent to an Indian unit. Thus, Manekshaw joined the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots, stationed at Lahore. He was later posted to the 4th Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment, stationed in Burma. On May 1, 1938, he was appointed quartermaster of his company. During the Second World War, Hormusji Manekshaw served in the British Indian Army as a captain in the Indian Medical Service. Of the Manekshaw siblings, Sam’s two elder brothers, Fali and Jan, qualified as engineers, while Cilla and Sheru became teachers. Both Sam and his younger brother Jami served in the Indian Armed Forces, with Jami becoming a doctor like his father and serving in the Royal Indian Air Force as a medical officer. As the first Indian to be awarded the air surgeon’s wings from the Naval Air Station Pensacola in the United States, Jami joined his elder brother in becoming a flag officer and retired as an air vice marshal in the Indian Air Force.

After the war, Prime Minister Gandhi decided to promote Manekshaw to the rank of field marshal and appoint him as the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS). However, after several objections from the commanders of the navy and the air force, the appointment was dropped. It was felt that, because Manekshaw was from the army, the comparatively smaller forces of the navy and air force would be neglected. Moreover, bureaucrats felt that it might challenge their influence over defense issues. Though Manekshaw was to retire in June 1972, his term was extended by a period of six months, and “in recognition of outstanding services to the Armed Forces and the nation,” he was promoted to the rank of field marshal on January 1, 1973. The first Indian Army officer to be so promoted, he was formally conferred with the rank in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 3.

Manekshaw died of complications from pneumonia at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, in 2008 at the age of 94. He was buried in the Parsi cemetery in Ootacamund (Ooty), Tamil Nadu, with military honors, adjacent to his wife’s grave. Owing to the controversies in which Manekshaw was involved post-retirement, it was reported that his funeral lacked VIP representation and no national day of mourning was declared, which, while not a breach of protocol, was not customary for a leader of national importance. He was survived by his two daughters and three grandchildren. After 16 years of his death, a film is made on him and his bravery that brings back the glorious period of his brave acts as a brave defense person for our nation.

Maratha leader Manoj Jarange-Patil ready to rattle Maha govt on quota 17

Keeping his date, Maratha leader Manoj Jarange-Patil is all set to address a mega-rally at Antarvali-Sarati village in Jalna district to demand the promised quotas for his community members who have assembled from across the state on Saturday.

Returning to his native village after a 10-day tour of certain key districts of the state, Jarange-Patil is scheduled to speak around noon before a sea of humanity that has converged here from almost all districts in the state, an organizer said.

The rally is being held on a sprawling, open 100-acre area near the village, with around 500 acres reserved for parking trucks, jeeps, buses, tempos, and tractors. The people have arrived from different parts of the state.

Though exact figures are not available, locals, media, and activists estimated that roughly around 13–15 lakhs, including a large number of women and girls, are attending.

There are at least seven entrances to the venue, including one reserved for women, and all arrangements have been made to make the people secure and comfortable, while local schools were closed in view of the massive crowds turning up here.

Food packets are being supplied from several of the two-dozen villages around Antarvali-Sarati, and an army of 10,000 volunteers has been taking care of the people’s needs since yesterday.

A fleet of 10 fully equipped ambulances is stationed near the venue, 40 beds are kept ready, and a team of 300 doctors and 500 nurses is at the place to handle any big and small illnesses, with surrounding hospitals kept on standby for any major emergencies.

The organizers have arranged for 50 giant water tankers with 12,000 liters of drinking water capacity, plus over 600,000 bottles of mineral water for the rallyists, and a few portable toilets stationed outside the periphery of the venue.

The hero of the quotas movement, Jarange-Patil, will make a royal entry on a 50-meter-long flower-strewn pathway and then step up to a 15-foot-tall stage, giving a commanding view of the entire surroundings, which have been crammed by people since Friday night.

The massive arrangements, the expenditure on which has been questioned by Nationalist Congress Party (AP) Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, brought back memories of the official award function on April 16 in Navi Mumbai.

At least 11 people were killed and around 50 injured, mostly due to heat stroke, at the conferment of the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan Award’ on social reformer Dr. Dattatreya Narayan, alias Appasaheb Dharmadhikari, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Navi Mumbai.

India extends 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice till March

India extends 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice till March 19

The central government has extended the 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice till March 31, 2024, an official notification said.

Rice which is partially boiled with husk is called parboiled rice.

Initially, the duty was introduced on August 25, 2023, and was due to remain effective till October 16, 2023, aimed at maintaining adequate domestic availability and checking its price.

India in July amended the rice export norms putting the non-basmati white rice in the “prohibited” category. The export policy relating to non-basmati white rice (Semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed: Other) was revised from “free” to “prohibited”.

However, it has kept open the option, where exports will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their government.

West African country Benin is one of the major importers of non-basmati rice from India. Other destination countries are Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Cote D’ Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Vietnam, Djibouti, Madagascar, Cameroon Somalia, Malaysia, Liberia, and UAE.

In late August, India also introduced additional safeguards on exports of basmati rice so as to prevent exports of non-basmati white rice, which was already under the prohibited category since July.

The government had said it received credible field reports regarding misclassification and illegal export of non-basmati white rice. “It has been reported that non-basmati white rice is being exported under the HS codes of parboiled rice and basmati rice,” the government had then said in a statement.

The government noticed that despite restrictions put on certain varieties, rice exports have been high during the current year.

Against that backdrop, it has issued instructions to APEDA, which regulates agricultural produce exports, to introduce additional safeguards to prevent the possible illegal exports of white non-basmati rice in the garb of basmati rice.

The government suggested contracts for basmati exports with a value of USD 1200 per tonne only and above should be registered for the issue of Registration-cum- Allocation Certificate (RCAC); and contracts with a value of below USD 1200 per tonne may be kept abeyance and may be evaluated by a committee to be set up by the Chairman, APEDA.

Notably, India in September 2022 banned the exports of broken rice and imposed a 20 per cent duty on exports of non-Basmati rice, except for parboiled rice amid concerns about overestimated low production due to a fall in area under the paddy crop. It later lifted the ban in November.
