Tamil Nadu: Farmers protest by holding rats in their mouth over Cauvery water dispute 2
Farmers in Trichy engaged in an unexpected way as a token of protest against Karnataka and the central government demanding Cauvery water release from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Farmers held rats in their mouth to mark their protest over the ongoing dispute with Karnataka. National South Indian River Interlinking Farmers’ Association Tamil Nadu unit president Ayyakannu is leading the protest in Trichy.
The protestors demanded the sharing of Cauvery water to save the standing ‘kuruvai’ crop cultivation in TN. Earlier a group of farmers in Trichy on Sunday staged a protest in Cauvery River water over the ongoing dispute with Karnataka. The farmers were demanding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the farmers in Karnataka’s Mandya are protesting to stop water from being released from Karnataka dams to Tamil Nadu. Farmers across Karnataka have been protesting since the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) ordered the state to release 5000 cusecs of water to its neighbouring state Tamil Nadu, for 15 days, effective from September 13. A bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha and Prashant Kumar Mishra on Thursday while refusing to interfere in the Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu said both CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) are regularly meeting and monitoring the water requirements every 15 days.
The court declined to entertain an application filed by the Tamil Nadu government to increase its current share of Cauvery water from 5,000 to 7,200 cusecs per day. There were widespread protest in Karnataka as well wit the capital city Bengaluru observing a bandh over the Cauvery Water Management Authority asking Karnataka to release 5000 cusecs of water till September 28.
Karnataka CM Siddaramiah appealed to all parties to not do politics on the issue. “It’s most unfortunate that BJP and JDS both are doing politics in cauvery issue. Its just because for politics, not for the people of the state or the people, when they said we’ll call for bandh, they have all the right to call bandh. But there is SC verdict regards to this. When we excise our fundamental rights, other shouldn’t be disturbed, that’s what SC said” Siddaramiah said.
“So far there is no distress formula has implemented. We are been praying for the distress formula in cauvery water sharing issue. SC or CWMA have not given distress formula solution, whenever there is less rain, there should be distress formula to share water. One more solution is Mekedaatu project which can save up to 70 TMC of water which benefits the both states” the Karnataka Chief Minister added.
After The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) broke all ties with Bharatiya Janata Party and NDA, Shiv Sena (UBT) Sanjay Raut has said that Not just AIADMK, but more parties will break ties with the BJP.
Sanjay Raut in press conference said “When we formed INDIA alliance that is when they remembered NDA. Till then it was ‘Modi akele kafi hai’. But the moment INDIA alliance was formed, PM Modi was not enough alone, they needed more support. The NDA alliance which does not have Shiv Sena and Akali Dal is not NDA. Shiv Sena and Akali Dal were the real strength of NDA. This NDA is very weak. Not just AIADMK, but more parties will break ties with the BJP. BJP will also sink before 2024.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost a key ally in Tamil Nadu on Monday when the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) snapped its ties with the ruling party at the Centre. This came as a jolt to the BJP, just months before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as well as key state assembly elections preceding that.
“The state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks about our former leaders, our general secretary EPS (K Palaniswami) and our cadres for the past year. In today’s meeting, this resolution was passed unanimously that AIADMK will break all ties with BJP and NDA alliance,” AIADMK leader KP Munuswamy said.
Munuswamy alleged that the state BJP has been intentionally attacking former Chief Minister Jayalalitha and Annadurai. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav said that BJP lost a major ally in south India and it is a big loss to the party.
“If you look at South India, then you would see that a major ally of NDA has quit the alliance. I think this will be a big loss to BJP. Shiv Sena, JD(U) and Akali Dal have already quit the alliance,” Yadav said. The BJP which lost Karnataka (the only southern state it ruled) this year, managed to join hands with the Janata Dal (Secular) this week. However, with AIADMK exiting the NDA fold today, the political landscape in south India changes once again for the BJP.
Nitish rubbishes speculations of JD(U)'s return to NDA, says prime concern is to strengthen INDIA bloc 5
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday rubbished speculations in a section of the media about his party JD(U)’s return to the BJP-led NDA, with which it snapped ties around a year ago, and said his prime concern was to strengthen opposition INDIA bloc.
Responding to reporters’ queries on the speculations, Kumar said, ”Kya faltu baat hai” (what rubbish!). The JD(U) leader, who is a key figure in the anti-BJP INDIA coalition, also voiced his disapproval of party colleagues talking about him having ”all qualities for making a good PM”.
”I have already told my party colleagues not to make such statements. My only wish is to strengthen the unity of the INDIA alliance. I am working only in this direction,” he said. Bihar Assembly Deputy Speaker and senior JD(U) leader Maheshwar Hazari had said that no one is more capable of becoming the PM candidate of the INDIA alliance than Nitish Kumar.
On a question on possibility of cabinet expansion, Kumar put the ball in his deputy Tejashwi Yadav’s court. ”Ask this question to the deputy chief minister,” he told reporters who asked him about speculations of cabinet expansion.
The state cabinet, headed by the JD(U) leader, at present has 28 ministers, with the RJD, to which Yadav belongs, enjoying the lion’s share despite the resignation of two of its ministers.
On BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s derogatory remarks against BSP lawmaker Danish Ali in Lok Sabha recently, Kumar said, ”Just leave this topic. Our government is working for the betterment of all sections of the society.”
Student slapping case: SC asks UP govt to appoint senior IPS officer to investigate case 7
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to appoint a senior IPS officer to probe the case of a schoolboy who was allegedly slapped by his classmates on the instruction of his teacher in Muzaffarnagar, terming the incident as ”serious”.
A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, while directing that the IPS officer file a report in the apex court, asked the state government to conduct counseling of the victim and other students who were involved in the case by professional counselors.
It said there is a prima facie case of failure on the part of the Uttar Pradesh government in complying with the provisions of the Right to Education Act, which deals with providing quality, free, and compulsory education to children up to 14 years old without any discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, or gender.
The bench asked the state government to furnish a status report on implementation of the RTE Act in schools across the state in four weeks, while terming the incident as ”serious”.
It was hearing a plea filed by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, seeking speedy investigation in the case. On September 6, the top court directed the Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police to submit a status report in the case.
It had asked the SP to inform it about measures taken to protect the student and his parents.
The top court had also issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and sought its reply by September 25.
The Muzaffarnagar Police had booked the teacher accused of making communal comments and allegedly ordering her students to slap a Muslim classmate for not doing his homework.
The school was also served a notice by the state education department in connection with the matter.
The teacher was booked after a video showed her allegedly asking students to slap the Class 2 boy in Khubbapur village and also making a communal remark.
This is a three party govt, will discuss, find a solution, says Maha Dy CM Ajit Pawar on Muslim reservation 9
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday said that it is a government of three parties in the state so he will keep the issue regarding Muslim reservation before the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.
“Earlier, when the reservation was given, the court had given permission for reservation in education but not in employment. This is the government of three parties. So I will keep this issue before CM and Deputy CM, and we will try to find a solution for it,” he said in a press briefing in Pune.
He added that if required they will approach the higher leadership for a decision.
Pawar further said that he conveyed a meeting with Minority Affairs Department and also some officials from Waqf Board to discuss about Maulana Azad Board and lands of Waqf Board.
“Me as a Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of the state conveyed a meeting with Minority Affairs Department where Minister for Rural Development Hasan Mushrif, Minister of State for Rural Development Abdul Sattar, and some officials from Waqf Board were present to discuss about Maulana Azad Board and lands of Waqf board. This is because we must think about them also, they are here in Maharashtra and India and I work as per the ideology of legends Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Mahatama Phule,” he added.
In 2014, the Congress-NCP alliance government awarded five per cent reservation to the Muslim community for educational institutions and government jobs on the basis of their backwardness. However, this reservation was not executed by the subsequent governments.
Ahead of PM's Bhopal visit, Uma Bharti raises demand for OBC quota within women's reservation bill 11
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled arrival in Bhopal, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti said on Monday she expects the PM to give a “positive signal” about carving out a quota for OBCs within the recently passed women’s reservation bill.
Earlier last week, Bharti expressed her disappointment for not including the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota within the constitutional amendment bill which provided 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state legislatures.
”Prime Minister is welcomed in the land of Bhopal. He is the messiah of the poor and backward; I am sure he will give a positive signal on the OBC reservation for women,” Bharti posted on X on Monday morning, hours before the PM visits Bhopal, where he will address a mega meeting of BJP workers.
Bharti had told PTI last week that she was happy that the women’s reservation bill was introduced in Parliament but was feeling somewhat dejected because it doesn’t have the provision for reservation for OBCs.
The senior BJP leader, who has been expressing her displeasure on various issues, denied that she quit politics.
“I had refused to contest elections because it had been many years since I had been working. I thought of taking a break for five years. People thought that I had left politics. I am tired of saying that I have not left politics,” she told a rally in Sagar district.
Bharti was last elected as Lok Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi.
Earlier this month, Bharti, also the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, expressed her displeasure over not being invited to attend the Jan Ashirwad Yatra, which was launched by party president JP Nadda on September 3. Bharti had also run a campaign demanding a stringent liquor policy in Madhya Pradesh and had allegedly thrown stones at a couple of shops as a mark of protest. She also stayed in a temple to protest, demanding amendments to the liquor policy. Elections are due in Madhya Pradesh later this year.
"What happened with Danish Ali was verbal lynching”: CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat 13
As the row over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s unparliamentary remarks against BSP MP Danish Ali continues on Sunday too, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat said that what happened with Ali in the Lok Sabha was “verbal lynching”. Talking to ANI, the CPI (M) leader also said that BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s allegation, wherein he claimed Bidhuri’s remarks came after Ali instigated him, is a ‘lie’.
“Nishikant Dubey’s allegation is a lie…what happened with BSP MP Danish Ali was verbal lynching…strict action must be taken, arrest should be made…no MP has such a privilege to use such bad words against another MP just because he belongs to a certain community….,’ she said. A day after leaders of Opposition parties wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding action against BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri for his derogatory remarks about BSP MP Danish Ali, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Saturday, raised several instances of “unsavoury remarks” made by Opposition leaders and sought to constitute an “inquiry committee to investigate the utterances” during the discussion on Chandrayaan-3’s success.
Notably, in his letter to the Speaker, Dubey also claimed “When Danish Ali was busy instigating Bidhuri with his intemperate comments, he made a highly objectionable and derogatory remark against PM Narendra Modi. In his desperation to denigrate the ruling dispensation and the PM’s achievement on landing Chandrayaan 3 on the moon, he screamed across the isle without the microphone but could be clearly heard saying that “Neech ko neech nehi kahenge toh kya kahenge.” “This statement made by Ali, was more than enough for any patriotic public representative to “lose his calm” and it led to Bidhuri responding to him like he did,” said the BJP MP who also claimed that Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Ray questioned the existence of Ram and Pushpak Viman and DMK claimed there is no God.
He said that the aspect of ‘Breach of Privilege’, which Danish Ali and some other members of Parliament have been quoting vociferously, cannot be a one-way street and if applied in isolation will be a serious and irrevocable ‘miscarriage of justice’. “I, therefore, request you to constitute an ‘inquiry committee’ to investigate the utterances made by various members during the said discussion and also to inquire into the extent of culpability of various other Members of Parliament in instigating our citizens by way of their comments made in the House by taking shelter of Article 105 of our Constitution,” he said.
Ramesh Bidhuri’s objectionable remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Danish Ali have triggered anger among the Opposition parties, with their demand for strict action against Bidhuri.
RBI likely to keep interest rate unchanged as inflation still high: Experts 15
The Reserve Bank is likely to maintain status quo on policy rates for the fourth time in a row at its bi-monthly monetary policy review meeting early next month, as retail inflation continues to remain high and the US Federal Reserve has decided to keep a hawkish stance for some more time, according to experts.
The Reserve Bank had raised the benchmark repo rate to 6.5 per cent on February 8, 2023 and since then it has retained the rates at the same level in view of the stubbornly high retail inflation and certain global factors including elevated crude oil prices in the international market.
The Reserve Bank Governor-headed six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled for October 4-6, 2023. The last meeting of the MPC, the highest rating-setting panel, was in August.
”We do expect the RBI to hold on to a status quo position this time as inflation is still high and liquidity tight. In fact, going by RBI forecast on inflation, it would be above 5 per cent in Q3 too, which will ensure that the status quo prevails for the calendar year for sure and probably Q4 too,” said Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda.
Sabnavis further said there are uncertainties relating to Kharif crop, especially on pulses, which can increase prices.
”The comfort is that there is less concern on growth which is on target,” he added.
Although the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based retail inflation eased a bit to 6.83 per cent in August from 7.44 per cent in the preceding month in July, it remained above the Reserve Bank’s comfort level of 6 per cent.
It may be mentioned that the government has mandated the RBI to keep inflation at 4 per cent with 2 per cent margin on either side.
Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA Limited said the headline CPI inflation is expected to ease to 5.3-5.5 per cent in September 2023 from 6.8 per cent in August 2023, benefitting from the halving of the average price of tomatoes as well as a favourable base.
”… We expect the CPI inflation to ease to 5.6 per cent in Q3 FY2024 and further to 5.1 per cent in Q4 FY2024, amid upside risks to food inflation on account of the impact of uneven and sub-par monsoons and low reservoir levels on Kharif yields and Rabi sowing, respectively,” she said.
Nayar said ICRA expects the MPC to remain on hold in October 2023 policy, while continuing to demonstrate caution amid a cloudy outlook for food inflation and elevated crude oil prices.
The Reserve Bank has projected CPI inflation at 5.4 per cent for 2023-24, with Q2 at 6.2 per cent, Q3 at 5.7 per cent and Q4 at 5.2 per cent, with risks evenly balanced. CPI inflation for Q1, 2024-25 is projected at 5.2 per cent.
On his expectations from the next bi-monthly monetary policy, Sanjay Bhutani, Director, Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI) said the RBI has gone along with the market sentiment of retaining the benchmark interest rate at 6.5 per cent for quite some time now.
However, it’s time for the central bank to contemplate a reduction of the interest rate with the objective of boosting growth, he said.
”…if that is not possible in view of high retail inflation and the hawkish stance of the Federal Reserve, the medical technology sector, which is reeling under the burden of high debt, does expect the RBI to continue with the pause and at the same time provide some firm indication of easing rates in the near future,” Bhutani opined.
Sandeep Bagla, CEO, Trust Mutual Fund was of the opinion that the environment for interest rates has worsened considerably from MPC’s last policy review in August. In the US and in India, the economy has shown resilient growth, and inflation numbers have risen beyond comfort levels.
”While food prices have softened, crude oil prices have climbed up, thereby raising inflationary expectations as evidenced by sharp rise in US treasury yields. The MPC will consider all these factors and maintain status quo on repo rates, as headline inflation is expected to come down in the coming months,” he said.
The Reserve Bank mainly factors in the CPI-based inflation while arriving at its bi-monthly monetary policy.
The borrowing cost which started rising in May last year has stabilised with RBI keeping the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent since February, when it was raised from 6.25 per cent. Later in the next three bi-monthly policy reviews in April, June and August the benchmark rate was retained.
The MPC consists of three external members and three officials of the RBI. The external members on the panel are Shashanka Bhide, Ashima Goyal, and Jayanth R Varma. Besides Governor Das, the other RBI officials in MPC are Rajiv Ranjan (Executive Director) and Michael Debabrata Patra (Deputy Governor).
India-Middle East-Europe corridor will become basis of world trade for centuries: PM Modi 17
Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Sunday that the India-Middle East-Europe corridor will become a basis of world trade for the coming hundreds of years and history will remember that it was envisioned in India.
In his monthly Mann ki Baat broadcast, Modi recalled the ”Silk route”, an ancient trade corridor used by India when it was a prosperous and great trading power, and said the country made the suggestion of the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor at the recent G20 Summit.
”This corridor is going to become the basis of world trade for hundreds of years to come, and history will always remember that this corridor was initiated on Indian soil,” he said.
The successful summit after the success of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission doubled every citizen’s happiness, he said while noting that the two accomplishments have figured most in the messages he has received from people. India’s leadership was acknowledged by the world as it succeeded in making the African Union a member of the G20, he said. Bharat Mandapam, the venue which hosted the G20 Summit, has become a ”celebrity”, the prime minister said, noting that people have been clicking selfies with the state-of-the-art conference hall.
With Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary falling on October 2, he said no one can forget the sight of world leaders paying homage at his memorial during the G20 Summit, a recognition as to how his ideas remain relevant globally. Modi expressed happiness at many cleanliness programmes being planned to mark his birth anniversary, with the Union government departments launching ‘Swachhta hi sewa’ programme.
Noting that a big cleanliness programme will be organised at 10 am on October 1, he urged people to join the exercise in their neighbourhood or any public place.
It will be a true tribute to Gandhi ji, he said and asked people to buy some khadi products.
Noting that the World Tourism Day falls on September 27, he said tourism is said to create maximum employment with minimum investment, adding that goodwill matters a lot in drawing tourists.
India’s goodwill has risen over the last few years, he said, and it has only gone up further with the G20 meetings as over one lakh foreign delegates travelled to different parts of the country and witnessed its diversity, cuisines and heritage.
”The wonderful experiences that the delegates who came here have carried back with them will further expand tourism,” he said.
Modi said it was a matter of immense pride that Santiniketan associated with Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and the Hoysala temples of Karnataka were recently declared world heritage sites.
Such sites number now 42 in India and it is the country’s efforts to have more and more places associated with its culture and heritage recognised as the World Heritage Sites.
Ahead of the start of festival season, he asked people to remember ‘vocal for local’ and buy ‘Made in India’ products. ”As far as possible, you should buy goods made in India, use Indian products and gift only Made in India goods. Your little joy will become the cause of immense happiness for someone else’s family. Whatever Indian goods you buy, our labourers, workers, craftspersons and other artisans will directly benefit from it,” he said.
In his remarks, Modi expressed happiness at the way students associated themselves with the G20 event.
Throughout the year, programmes related to the G20 were held in many universities of the country. ”In this series now, another exciting program is going to happen in Delhi – the ‘G20 University Connect Programme’. Many prestigious institutions like IITs, IIMs, NITs and medical colleges will also participate. If you are a college student, you must watch this programme on September 26 and join it. I myself will attend the programme,” he said.
While hailing the success of Chandrayaan-3, Modi noted that ”More than 80 lakh people watched this incident on ISRO’s YouTube Live Channel; which is a record in itself. This conveys how deep the attachment of crores of Indians is to Chandrayaan-3”.
Indian culture and music, he said, have now become global. The fascination of people all over the world towards them is increasing day by day, he said while sharing a short clip of a 21-year-old German woman Kasmi.
Kasmi, who is visually impaired, has never been to India but was fascinated by its music from an early age, he said, lauding her.
The most inspiring thing is that she has mastered singing in many Indian languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Urdu and has also mastered her notes in all of them, he said.
In the programme, the prime minister also praised a group of youths in Nainital for starting ‘Ghoda Library’, aimed at taking books to children living in remote villages so that they could read poems, stories and moral education books apart from school books. In Hyderabad, 11-year-old Akarshana Satish studying in class 7 is running seven libraries for children, he said while citing examples of people working to save wild animals and pigeons.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, he noted people have joined hands to revive the Sot river.
”By walking on the path of duty, you too can become the medium of many such changes around you,” Modi said.
More than 80,000 idols were immersed between Saturday, which was the fifth day of Ganesh festivities, and the early hours of Sunday in Mumbai, a civic official said.
