Why can't a strong woman be a romantic person as well: Shabana Azmi on 'Rocky Aur Rani...' kiss 2

It’s not like strong women don’t have a romantic bone in their body, says actor Shabana Azmi, wondering why her kiss with Dharmendra in Karan Johar’s latest ”Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” has generated the buzz it has.

In the movie, Alia Bhatt’s Rani and Ranveer Singh’s Rocky meet each other while searching for the connection that their respective grandparents once shared. The Azmi-Dharmendra romance plays out to old Hindi songs in the film.

Azmi, 72, said she is happy audiences, especially young people, have embraced the much discussed kiss.

”I think the maximum comments that I’m getting are like, ‘Oh wow, we would have never imagined you in this kind of role and you carry it out with such grace’. Grace is the word that comes up often,” Azmi told PTI in an interview.

In her view, the kiss generated so much debate probably because ”it’s such an unexpected thing”.

”You’re not prepared for it in any way at all… But I am like ‘why is this so surprising’… An actor who has a strong woman image, why is it not possible that she can also be a romantic person? It’s not like strong women don’t have any romantic bones in their body.

”I think it’s the deliciousness of it that has taken people by surprise and they just adore it. It’s the younger generation that’s really doing all the clapping and cheering.” Azmi said Johar, who she has collaborated with for the first time in a movie, kept telling her to trust him. She got similar assurances from the film’s costume designer Manish Malhotra, who has dressed her in the loveliest of the saris for the movie.

”It needed some willing suspension of disbelief. And Karan kept saying, ‘trust me’, ‘trust me’. Manish Malhotra kept saying, ‘trust me’. So, I said, ‘All right, I’m surrendering to you all. And if people throw stones at me, then I’m going to pick up those stones and throw them right back at you’,” Azmi recalled with a laugh.

The film, which she calls a ”studied risk” by Johar, is doing well with all the critical and commercial acclaim coming its way. ”Rocky Aur Rani…” has already collected over Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office since its release last Friday.

”Karan tackles subjects, which have been a relative anathema in mainstream. And yet, he came from a position of such conviction,” she said, praising Johar for stretching people’s imagination without being ”preachy” and ”keeping all the fun and the energy going.” ”Because if you do this in the parallel cinema, then you’re preaching to the already converted. So if you want to bring change through the medium of films, then it’s important that it’s also brought in through the mainstream,” she added.

In a key scene, Azmi’s character owns up to the fact that she had an affair as a married woman and has no regrets about it.

The idea, Azmi said, was to break boundaries without sounding cheap.

”You can say something like that and you can give it the grace and the dignity that is required. So breaking out of what you have strongly believed are boundaries beyond which you cannot step in mainstream cinema, that truly is wonderful,” she said.

The actor also credited dialect coach and actor Husne Shabnam for helping her perfect her Bengali diction.

”She really worked hard especially to get the song right under the watchful eyes and ears of the Bengali community. I’m glad that that’s been appreciated,” she said.

Azmi will next be seen in R Balki’s ”Ghoomer” in the role of Saiyami Kher’s cricket-loving grandmother. She has a homely appearance but is knowledgeable about the sport and inspires her granddaughter to take up the game.

After that, she also has Vikas Khanna’s ”Imaginary Rain”.

”The fear that we had of ageism and all that, it is disappearing and roles are being available for people of all ages and obviously that’s a very happy situation for actors. I’m glad to be here at this time working,” she said.

The veteran star, an icon of the ’70s and ’80s parallel cinema who had an equally impressive mainstream filmography, is being celebrated by the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) with a retrospective. She will also hoist the Indian national flag to kickstart the Independence Day celebrations at the movie gala.

Azmi’s films ”Dharavi”, ”Ek Din Achanak”, ”Ek Doctor Ki Maut”, ”Paar”, ”Pestonjee” and ”Sati” will be screened at the festival.

The actor credited festival Mitu Bhowmick Lange for curating an interesting line up instead of taking up popular titles from her filmography.

Elgar case: Activists Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira to walk out of jail as court issues their release order 4

Activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, are likely to walk out of jail on Saturday as a special court has issued their release order, a week after they were granted bail by the Supreme Court.

A lawyer linked to the case said the special court hearing cases related to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) issued their release order on Friday and the accused are likely to walk out of the jail by this evening as their bail formalities before the court have been completed.

The accused are currently lodged in Taloja jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai.

The apex court on July 28 granted bail to the two accused, noting that the actual involvement of Gonsalves and Ferreira in any terrorist act has not surfaced from any third-party communications.

The SC bench comprising Justices Aniruddha Bose and Sudhanshu Dhulia granted bail to them, noting that mere holding of certain literature through which violent acts may be propagated would not attract the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

”Considering the fact that almost five years have elapsed, we are satisfied they have made out a case for bail. The allegations are serious, no doubt, but for that reason alone, bail cannot be denied to them,” the bench said.

The apex court also asked them not to leave Maharashtra without the trial court’s permission and surrender their passports.

It also directed the two activists to use one mobile each and let the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the case, know their addresses.

It also granted liberty to the NIA to seek cancellation of their bail if there is any violation of the bail conditions.

The activists had moved the top court against a Bombay High Court order rejecting their bail pleas.

The special NIA court imposed additional conditions for their bail, directing the accused to furnish a personal recognizance (PR) bond of Rs 50,000 each and asking them not to speak to the media about the case. It also directed them to attend the proceedings before the court unless exempted from personal appearance.

Gonsalves and Ferreira were arrested in August 2018 for their alleged role in the case and have been in judicial custody since then.

As many as 16 activists have been arrested in the case, of whom three are currently out on bail.

Scholar-activist Anand Teltumbde and lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj are out on regular bail, while poet Varavara Rao is currently out on bail on health grounds.

Another accused, activist Gautam Navlakha, is currently under house arrest as per the direction of the Supreme court.

The prosecution’s case is that the Gonsalves and Ferreira played an active role in the recruitment of and training for cadres of the said organisation and Ferreira also had a role in managing the finances of that organisation.

The case pertains to the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017 which, according to the Pune police, was funded by Maoists.

The inflammatory speeches made there led to violence at the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial in Pune the next day, police had alleged. The case was later taken over by the NIA.

Days after violence, 45 illegal shops razed in Haryana's Nuh 6

The district administration authorities on Saturday morning launched an anti-encroachment drive and razed down over 45 “illegal” shops at the Nalhar road area in Haryana’s Nuh district days after incidents of violence, which claimed the lives of six people including two home guards.

A team from the enforcement wing of district administration led by the local SDM and town planning department officials reached the market area near SHKM Government Medical College on Nalhar Road and started the removal drive with the help of multiple earth-moving machines and workers.

“More than 45 commercial shops built illegally are being demolished on Nalhar road,” Nuh District Town Planner said while speaking to ANI. A heavy police force was also deployed in the area during the course of the removal action to prevent any untoward incident.

Nuh SDM Ashwani Kumar said that the action was taken on the directions of CM Manohar Lal Khattar. “The encroachment was spread across 2.5 acres of land. All of it was illegal construction. It has been found that some of these people had involvement in the recent clashes,” Kumar said while speaking to ANI.

Earlier on Friday, Haryana police said that as many as 141 people have been arrested and 55 FIRs registered in connection with the violence and rioting at Haryana’s Nuh district on Monday. The toll in the violence that broke out between two groups on Monday stood at 6, including 2 police homeguards, while another 88 were injured, police informed further.

“In connection with the violence that took place during a religious procession, 55 FIRs have been registered so far and 141 people have been arrested. Another 88 people were injured in the clashes. The toll in the violence stands at 6,” a police officer said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Gurugram Police said it has filed 27 FIRs and arrested 38 accused persons, so far, in connection with the violence in Gurugram and adjoining districts, following the clashes in Nuh.

“We have filed 27 FIRs and arrested 38 persons in connection with the recent violence in Gurugram. We have also taken 60 persons under preventive detention,” Varun Kumar Dhahiya, Assistant Police Commissioner (Gurugram), told ANI on Friday. Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Wednesday, while alleging a bigger conspiracy behind the violence, said the culprits will not be spared.

“The culprits will not be spared. Whoever masterminded the violence will also pay. The rioters will be made to pay for the damage to public property,” Vij added. The Home Minister informed further, “I would urge one and all to maintain peace and harmony. State police personnel and central paramilitary forces are deployed in adequate numbers to ensure peace. The situation is under control.”

“I would also request people to refrain from posting any offensive or inflammatory content on social media. We have formed an inquiry committee, which is keeping an eye on each and every activity on social media. The matter is being investigated thoroughly,” Vij added.

Case filed against NCC cadet who assaulted juniors during training session 8

Police have registered a case against a cadet of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) after a viral video showed him mercilessly thrashing some junior cadets during a physical training session at a college in Maharashtra’s Thane city, an official said on Saturday.

The case was registered against the student under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) at the Thane Nagar police station on Friday night after the police took suo motu cognisance of the matter, he said.

The action was taken on the day several student unions protested outside the college, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured the state legislative assembly that the issue would be probed and necessary steps taken.

The incident took place at Joshi Bedekar College in Thane. The college management said that it has suspended the student, whose act of beating his fellow NCC cadets during the physical training session on a rainy day was filmed by another student.

The video that went viral on Thursday sparked public outrage.

The viral video showed eight cadets in a puddle amid the rain with their heads pinned in the muddy soil instead of using their hands for support. The senior NCC cadet is seen standing behind them, holding a stick, and whacking each of them one by one for failing to execute his challenging drill.

The cadets are seen in a push-up position in a water-logged area with their feet and heads touching the ground and hands folded above the back. When a cadet changes posture, the senior student is seen thrashing him with a stick and going on to thrash others too.

As the video surfaced on social media, several student unions and political parties, including the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, protested outside the college on Friday.

Nitin Landge of the Shinde group’s student wing said the NCC cadets who were on the receiving end and their parents are under extreme pressure from the college management to not complain against the senior.

The college must take the incident seriously and lodge a police complaint, he said.

Members of the student wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) submitted a memorandum to the college management demanding strict action against the senior student.

Policemen were deployed at the spot to prevent the protesters from barging into the college.

Opposition leader in the assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, on Friday raised the issue in the House. Speaker Rahul Narwekar directed the government to take action.

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar assured the House that strict action would be taken against the culprits. Former CM Prithviraj Chavan also sought action against the person responsible under the anti-ragging law.

The NCC also came out with a statement, saying what is seen in the viral video is “neither a reflection of the NCC ethos nor a part of any organized training or activity”.

Joshi Bedekar College in Thane operates the NCC unit along with two other sister concerns, Bandodkar College and VPM Polytechnic. The student, who belonged to Bandodkar College, has been suspended.

Rahul Gandhi all set to return to Parliament 10

Finally, the Supreme Court suspended Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on the ‘Modi’ surname. The order will allow him to return to parliament and contest national elections due next year. The trial judge has awarded the maximum sentence of two years in the case, the top court observed, pointing out that it would not have attracted disqualification if the sentence was a day lesser.

Gandhi was convicted in March in a case brought by Purnesh Modi, a legislator from the western state of Gujarat belonging to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, over comments he made in 2019 when he asked why “all thieves have Modi as (their) common surname”. Lower courts and the high court in Gujarat – Modi’s home state where the BJP holds power – had rejected appeals by Gandhi to suspend the conviction, causing him to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court judge Justice B R Gavai said the lower court which sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail had not given any reasons for handing down the maximum sentence of two years which led to his disqualification from parliament. While Gandhi’s comments were “not in good taste” and he “ought to have been more careful while making public speeches”, the conviction not only punished Gandhi but also voters who had elected him to represent their constituency, said Gavai, who headed a bench of three judges which suspended the conviction.

Rahul Gandhi has begun to attack Adani directly. If he does not stop, it would have created a lot of headaches for Modi and BJP, they actually needed to clutch him and his statement was used as a tool. In the parliament, Rahul Gandhi had asked questions about Adani’s role. BJP went to the trouble of obliterating a major part of his speech. In response the Prime Minister did not take the name of Adani even once. There are some people who are saying that he insulted the whole “Modi” caste and all OBCs. It is quite obvious that his only target was Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Narendra Modi. Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi are not even OBCs.

This entire saga was politically motivated vendetta. What was wrong in his statement, Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi has of course looted our country, so if that is applied, then there are many thieves who have that surname and does it mean that Modi’s surname is defamed. When a person calls an Italian bar dancer in the media news, the people accept it and not the statements of Rahul Gandhi, are we not biased? If loose talks by Subramanian Swamy and BJP leaders about Gandhi family are entertained, why take objection to Rahul Gandhi? Well, the supreme court has not only given relief to Rahul Gandhi but also given some assurance to people that justice is delivered.

The problem with the criminal defamation law in India is that it is outdated. People need to think about the purpose of this law. Whom does it help? Who gets affected? India has a particularly strict criminal defamation law compared to many other democracies. In India, defamation is a criminal offence that can result in imprisonment and fines. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) includes defamation as an offence under Section 499, which defines defamation as any imputation that harms a person’s reputation.

Whereas in many other democracies, defamation is primarily a civil matter, meaning that it is addressed through civil lawsuits rather than criminal charges. In countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, for example, defamation can be the basis for a civil lawsuit, but it is not typically a criminal offence. Even in countries where criminal defamation laws do exist, the penalties may not be as severe as those in India. For example, in France, criminal defamation can result in fines and imprisonment, but the maximum sentence is typically shorter than in India, and imprisonment is typically not mandatory.

Overall, the criminal defamation law in India is among the strictest in the world, and there have been concerns raised about the law’s impact on freedom of speech and expression. Some have called for reform of the law to make it more in line with international standards of freedom of expression. The number of instances in which this law has been used as a tool to harass and intimidate journalists, whistle-blowers and activists, are too many. If we look at previous such cases like Arvind Kejriwal vs. Nitin Gadkari: In 2013, Maneka Gandhi vs. Indira Gandhi: In 1977, MG Devasahayam vs. M Karunanidhi: In 1992, Jay Amit Shah vs. The Wire: In 2017. All these cases are different from each other under defamation but none of these leaders were banned or barred from their rights and duties. In Rahul Gandhi’s case it was an extreme sentence of disqualification. This law needs to be revisited, and discussed, in any case, it must be limited only to civil courts, not worth being treated as a criminal offence.

Major relief to Rahul Gandhi, as SC stays conviction in ‘Modi’ surname case

Major relief to Rahul Gandhi, as SC stays conviction in 'Modi' surname case 12

In a relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court, in an interim order on Friday, stayed his conviction in the criminal defamation case over ‘Modi surname’ remark. The apex court earlier in the day began hearing of an appeal filed by the Congress leader challenging Gujarat High Court order which declined to stay his conviction in the criminal defamation case.

The apex court told Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for Rahul Gandhi, that he will have to make out an exceptional case for a stay on conviction. Singhvi said in his arguments that complainant Purnesh Modi’s original surname is not ‘Modi’ and he adopted this surname later.

“Not a single of the persons Gandhi had named during his speech has sued. This is a small community of 13 crore people and there is no uniformity, or homogeneity. Who is aggrieved in this community are only people who are BJP office-holders and suing, Singhvi said. Referring to the earlier verdict in the case by lower court, Singhvi said the judge treats this as a serious offence involving a moral turpitude.

“This is non-cognisable, bailable, and compoundable offence. The offence was not against society, not kidnapping, rape, or murder. How can this become an offence involving moral turpitude?” he argued.

“In democracy we have dissent, in democracy we have disagreement. What we call ‘shaleen bhasha’. Gandhi is not a hardened criminal. There are many cases filed by BJP workers, but there was never any conviction. Gandhi has already missed two sessions of the Parliament,” he added.

The apex court issued notices to the Gujarat government and the complainant in July on an appeal of the Congress leader challenging the Gujarat High Court order. The Gujarat HC had in its order declined to stay his conviction in the criminal defamation case in which Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by the Surat court over the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

In March, the magisterial court convicted Rahul Gandhi for his ‘Modi’ surname remarks ahead of the 2019 national polls.

Pakistan: IHC reserves verdict on Imran Khan's plea in Toshakhana case 14

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday reserved its verdict on a set of petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan against the Toshakhana trial, the Dawn reported. The pleas included Imran Khan’s application against the maintainability of a complaint seeking criminal proceedings against him on the charge of hiding Toshakhana gifts and a petition seeking the transfer of the said case to another trial court.

The third petition was filed earlier on Thursday seeking the right to defence in the case. Imran had filed these applications in the IHC after a trial court last month declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) reference against him was maintainable, the Dawn reported.

The charges were framed against the PTI chief on May 10. However, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stayed the proceeding and recently directed Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar to re-examine the matter in seven days. The questions included whether the complaint had been filed on behalf of ECP by a duly authorised person, whether the ECP’s decision of Oct 21, 2022, was a valid authorisation to any officer of ECP to file a complaint, and whether the question of authorisation was a question of fact and evidence and could be ratified subsequently during the course of proceedings, the Dawn reported.

During the hearing, Justice Farooq heard arguments on the petitions by Imran’s lawyers Khawaja Haris and Gohar Khan. ECP counsel Amjad Pervaiz also presented his stance on the matter. The IHC CJ then reserved the verdict on the petitions, saying that the judgment will be announced today, Friday.

Toshakhana case filed by ruling party lawmakers is based on a criminal complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The case alleges that Imran had “deliberately concealed” details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana — a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept — during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.

Imran has faced a number of legal issues over his retention of gifts. The issue also led to his disqualification by the ECP, the Dawn reported. On Oct 21, 2022, the ECP concluded that the former premier had indeed made “false statements and incorrect declarations” regarding the gifts.

The Toshakhana is a department under the Cabinet Division that stores gifts given to rulers and government officials by heads of other governments and foreign dignitaries. According to Toshakhana rules, gifts/presents and other such materials received by persons to whom these rules apply shall be reported to the Cabinet Division. The watchdog’s order had said Imran stood disqualified under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution, the Dawn reported.

Subsequently, the ECP approached the Islamabad sessions court with a copy of the complaint, seeking proceedings against Imran under criminal law for allegedly misleading officials about the gifts he received from foreign dignitaries during his tenure as the prime minister.

NDRF's operation to rescue four workers trapped after well cave-in enters 4th day in Pune's Indapur 16

The National Disaster Response Force’s operation to rescue four workers, who are feared trapped after soil caved in during the construction of a well in Maharashtra’s Pune district, continued on the fourth day, an official said.

The incident occurred at Mhasobachi Wadi village in Indapur tehsil on Tuesday evening. The personnel of the NDRF and the local administration are carrying out the rescue operation to bring the trapped workers out, he said.

”Despite the odds, the NDRF personnel are working continuously to remove the collapsed soil and debris. The work was on at the site with the help of machinery even during the entire night,” a senior official of the agency said.

The well is 100 feet deep with a diameter of 120 feet, officials said, adding that the site was earlier used for quarrying.

During the construction of the well, the inner concrete wall sank, and those working at the edge of the concrete wall got trapped under the debris, officials said.

Nuh: When will we rise above Hindu-Muslim and blood thirst? 18

Haryana state is not new to communal violence and riots. Both the religious people are intolerant towards each other. Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra organised by Hindutva groups Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad was passing through Nuh.

In the show off during yatra, several hateful videos by Hindutva activists were circulated in the region, following which similar videos made by some Muslim youth challenging Hindutva activists like Monu Manesar to enter Nuh also surfaced on social media. The WhatsApp circulations and social media postings created anger among the groups. Hindu groups were all set to challenge Muslims in the areas.

In the meantime, a Muslim mob tried to brutally stop the Yatra in Nuh because of which a fight broke out and later escalated into a full-blown communal riot. The residual effect of the clashes was also seen in adjoining Gurugram where a mosque was set on fire the next day. The mosque is the only one on government allocated land in the area. The deputy imam of the mosque was stabbed 13 times with swords and killed by the Hindu mob.

However, since the clashes broke out, BJP leaders have tried to fuel the communal animosity in the area, with home minister Vij demanding the deployment of central forces in the region. The Congress legislators of the region, on the other hand, have been appealing for peace and working closely with the district administration to prevent another such flare-up.

The Mewat and Gurugram regions have frequently been in the news over the last few years. Frequent incidents of lynching, cow vigilantism, attacks on Muslims and mosques, boycott campaigns against public offering of namaz, and hateful threats on social media against the Muslim community by Hindutva activists like Monu Manesar and Bittu Bajrangi have kept the communal pot boiling in the region. This has resulted in deepening mistrust between communities. More often than not, the aggressive Hindutva activists have acted with impunity, which has led to the region remaining constantly on edge and sharply polarised along religious lines.

The labourers from Bihar and West Bengal who are living in slum areas are leaving Gurugram due to fear of riots. In Sohna town, nearly 30 km south of the Anjuman Jama Mosque, a stretch of shops belonging to Muslims in the town’s main road lay charred following the violence there on July 31. The unrest in Haryana comes a month before global leaders are due to arrive in New Delhi for a Group of 20 (G20) summit.

Nearby, windows of homes were broken, vehicles burned and the streets littered with stones and bricks. The mob saw the names on the hoardings outside the shops and burned only those belonging to Muslims. They were shouting “Jai Shri Ram” (Hail Lord Rama) and saying “Jab mulle kaatey jayenge, Ram Ram chillayenge” (Muslims will be slaughtered in the name of Ram). Jai Shri Ram has emerged as a war cry by Hindu far-right groups, who have been accused of lynching dozens of Muslims on the suspicion of cow smuggling since Modi came to power in 2014.

Authorities in Haryana have deployed additional troops, imposed a curfew and suspended the internet in the wake of the unrest. But the measures did not stop Hindu mobs from attacking Muslim-owned shops, roadside eateries, properties and places of worship in Gurugram as well as in nearby towns such as Sohna.

Shops in Gurugram’s Sector 70A and Sector 66 were torched on, while Bajrang Dal members held a rally in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh city, shouting hateful slogans such as “Desh ke gaddaro ko, Goli maaro saalon ko” (Shoot the traitors of our country) – a chant that was widely used by BJP politicians against Muslims during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in 2019 and 2020.

The mosque – one of the few places for Muslim worship in Gurugram, a predominantly Hindu suburb of India’s capital, New Delhi – came under attack on the night of July 31, by a Hindu far-right mob. Communal clashes broke out on Monday during a religious procession taken out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Haryana’s Nuh. At least six people, including two home guards, three civilians and an Imam, have lost their lives in the violence. Haryana Police have arrested at least 116 people and registered around 41 FIRs late on Tuesday following clashes. Meanwhile, fresh violence in Gurugram on Tuesday night out Delhi on alert.

The polarisation along religious lines is evident in the aftermath of Monday clashes. Members of the Hindu community told The Wire that mobs consisting of Muslims ransacked their shops, even looted liquor shops, and set many cars on fire. As per locals, the violence began from 12 pm and continued till 8 in the evening. Police failed to control the situation which resulted in three deaths on Monday.

Injured Bajrang Dal members were taken to the neighbouring SHKM Medical College. Things have not stopped here; the saffron clan is making preparations to invite riots like this so that these incidents can fetch some votes for the party.

Batsman Manoj Tiwary announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Batsman Manoj Tiwary announces retirement from all forms of cricket 20

Former India batsman Manoj Tiwary on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing curtains to a very unique career.

Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and three T20Is between 2008 and 2015, ventured into politics even while he remained an active cricketer, and became a minister of state for sports and youth affairs in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s state cabinet. But during the 2022-23 domestic season, the 37-year-old returned to play for Bengal and guided the team to the final where they went down to Saurashtra at the Eden Gardens. It was also Tiwary’s last First-Class game.

”Goodbye to the game of cricket,” Tiwary wrote in an Instagram post while announcing his retirement. ”This game has given me everything, I mean every single thing which I had never dreamt of, starting from the times when my life was challenged by different forms of difficulties.

”I will always be grateful to this game and to the GOD, who has always been by my side throughout,” said Tiwary.

The right-handed batsman made 287 runs from 12 one-dayers that includes a hundred against West Indies at Chennai in December 2011. Tiwary finished his First-Class career just 92 runs shy of the 10,000-landmark (9908 runs) and averaged 48.56 with 29 centuries in a glittering 19-year career. He made his debut under Deep Dasgupta in 2004 against Delhi at the Eden Gardens. He scored 5581 runs from 169 List A games at an average of 42.28. An aggressive middle-order batter, Tiwary faced selection blues with the India think tank under MS Dhoni preferring a left-hander in Suresh Raina, who was also his protege in Chennai Super Kings. As fate had it in store for him, Tiwary was dropped for 14 ODIs after scoring the century against the Windies. Tiwary made 65 runs and took four wickets in two matches when he made his return but he was dropped again. Injuries also took a toll on his career.

He was also a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ maiden IPL triumph in 2012 and struck the winning runs in the last over to seal a 191-run chase against the CSK.

Tiwary also represented Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab and Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL. Overall, he has played 183 T20s, scoring 3436 runs at a strike rate of 116.43.

Tiwary also thanked his childhood coach Manabendra Ghosh, his former teammates and his family.

“Manabendra Ghosh, my father figure like coach, has been the pillar in the cricketing journey. If he had not been there then I would have not reached anywhere in the cricketing circle. Thank you Sir and wish you a speedy recovery, as your health is not keeping well. ”Thank you to my Dad and Mom, they both never put pressure on me to focus on my studies rather they encouraged me to continue in cricket. Big thank you to my wife, @roy_susmita7 who has always been on my side from the time she came into my life,” he wrote. Tiwary first gave up captaincy in 2018 but played for Bengal despite battling with injuries. He made a foray into politics when he joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in 2021 ahead of the Assembly polls in Bengal.

He was then handed a ticket from Shibpur constituency from where he won and went on to succeed his former Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla as the MoS sports.
