Maha CM Shinde holds meeting with Shiv Sena functionaries from 15 states in Srinagar 2

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who heads the ruling Shiv Sena, has held a meeting with the functionaries of his party from 15 states in Srinagar in Kashmir.

During the meeting held on Sunday, Shinde asked them to work towards expanding the Shiv Sena’s base with help of ruling ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A statement from Shinde’s office said his party’s office-bearers from Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand among others attended the meeting in Srinagar.

The Shinde-led Maharashtra government will complete a year in office later this month. Shinde and 39 Shiv Sena MLAs had rebelled against then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray in June last year, which led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Shinde and the rebel legislators then joined hands with the BJP and formed government with Devendra Fadnavis as deputy CM. The Election Commission has allotted the ‘Shiv Sena’ party name and the ‘bow and arrow’ poll symbol to the Shinde-led faction.

"You should ask Virat...what shot was that?": Sunil Gavaskar slams Indian batting line-up 4

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar slammed the Indian team, especially star batter Virat Kohli, for poor shot selection and overall disappointing performance with the bat, which saw them crumble in the opening session of the final day of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval during a run-chase of 444 runs. After their ICC World Test Championship title win against India in the final by 209 runs at The Oval, Australia made history by becoming the first-ever team to clinch all major ICC trophies. After dominating India over the course of five days Australia secured their maiden World Test Championship 2023 title on Sunday at the Oval, London. India was bundled out at 234 in 63.3 overs while chasing 444, with Mohammad Shami as the last player standing with a score of 13(8)*.

India started the final day in a solid position at 164/3, with Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) unbeaten. But early in the first session, Virat chased a ball that pitched outside off stump and edged it straight into the hands of Steve Smith at slips, who took a brilliant diving catch. Virat did not only miss his fifty by a run, but it started India’s downward spiral on the final day too. “It was a bad shot. It was an ordinary shot. You are asking me about it, I think you should ask Kohli. What was that shot? That was a shot outside the off-stump. We talked so much about the fact that to win a match, you need a long inning. You need a century. How are you going to make a century if you are going to play a shot so far outside the off-stump,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar said that perhaps Virat’s mind was occupied with reaching his half-century. “Pretty ordinary shot [by Kohli] outside the off stump. He had been leaving till then. He flashes at one outside the off stump. Maybe he was conscious of the fact that he needed one run to get to a half-century. A lot of time it happens. You are nearing a milestone. It happened to Jadeja (Ravindra Jadeja) I think. He played at a delivery he shouldn’t have when he was 48 [in the first innings],” said Gavaskar.

Gavaskar did not spare anyone and was critical of Indian batting as a whole for not being able to last even a single session with wickets in hand and some capable stars still batting or coming to bat later. “The batting was in shambles today. It was just ridiculous what we saw today. The shot-making, we saw some pretty ordinary shots yesterday from Pujara. And today some of the shots that we saw. How do you expect a win?,” said Gavaskar.

“We did not even last a session with this batting line-up with eight wickets in hand. Come on,” added Gavaskar. Gavaskar also criticised head coach Rahul Dravid for his comments on players’ batting averages falling.

After the match, though Dravid said that India’s top five batters are future legends, experienced and have won in difficult conditions of Australia and England, he admits that the players did not do justice to their high standards and tough wickets have been set up all over the world keeping how each point in the championship matters and this needs to be factored while looking at batting averages. “They (India’s top five batters) are experienced, they are legends of the future. The same boys have won twice in Australia, won Tests in England. Yes, they will agree this was not up to their high standards but we are working on it. Some of the wickets have been challenging. This was a good wicket, but some other conditions haven’t been easy,” Dravid had said after the match.

“Every game is important in the WTC. You need points, you cannot play for draws. So everywhere, even in India, the wickets have been tough. You have to factor this in while looking at averages. It is not just ours, but yes, we need to work on it. If we give bowlers runs to play with, we can win Tests,” he added. Gavaskar urged that something be done about the falling averages of stars like Virat, Rahane, Pujara etc., since it is costing the team big time.

“It does not matter what the other players’ averages are. We are talking about the Indian team now. The Indian players’ averages are falling, something has to be done. The batting is the one which is costing us. Why is it happening? That is something we need to look at. You bat well in India, you are the ‘dadas’ in India, but then, some of them falter outside,” said Gavaskar. “Is the level of coaching not what you require? Is there not much of analysis about areas where you lack? Honest self-assessment is an absolute necessity after this. One team is going to win, one is going to lose. It is how you lose, that is the thing. That hurts.”

“We have also been knocked out. And we have been miserable. You cannot say that the current lot is beyond criticism. You have to be analytical about what happened out there. Was our approach right? Was our selection right? You cannot brush this under the carpet,” Gavaskar concluded. Coming to the match, India started the day five at 164/3, with Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) unbeaten at the crease.

However, a game-changing over by Scott Boland, which saw him trap Virat for 49 and Ravindra Jadeja for a duck, started India’s downfall. Rahane was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for 46 while Srikar Bharat (23) was dismissed by Nathan Lyon. The Indian batting line-up failed to put up a fight, bundling out for 234 runs in 63.3 overs to hand Australia their first-ever WTC title.

Lyon was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, taking 4/41. Boland took 3/46 while Starc got two wickets. Skipper Pat Cummins got one wicket. On day four, India ended at 164/3, with Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) unbeaten at the crease. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill (18) gave the team a brisk start with a 41-run opening stand, but a contentional catch by Cameron Green on Boland’s delivery ended the partnership.

A 51-run stand between Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara helped India carry forward the chase with an attacking intent. But Lyon dismissed Rohit for 43 and Cummins removed Pujara for 27 to reduce India to 93/3. From that point on, Rahane and Virat formed a 71-run stand to end the fourth day strongly. Australia declared their innings at 270/8, gaining a lead of 443 runs. Australia was restricted to 24/2 at one point, but Marnus Labuschagne (41) and Steve Smith (34) brought back Australia into the game. Later, contributions from middle-order/lower-middle-order players like Cameron Green (25), a half-century from wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey (60*) and his 93-run stand with Mitchell Starc (41) increased Australia’s lead over India.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking 3/58. Umesh Yadav (2/54) and Mohammed Shami (2/39) got two wickets each while Mohammed Siraj got one scalp. In their first innings, India was bundled out for 296 runs. India trailed Australia by 173 runs, who had scored 469 runs in their first innings.

India’s top order failed in their first innings. Rohit Sharma (15), Shubman Gill (13), Cheteshwar Pujara (14) and Virat Kohli (14) failed to post big scores. But contributions from comeback man Ajinkya Rahane (89 in 129 balls, 11 fours and a six), Shardul Thakur (51 in 109 balls with six fours) and Ravindra Jadeja (48 in 51 balls with seven fours and a six) helped India put on a fight after being restricted to 71/4. Pat Cummins (3/83), Nathan Lyon (2/19), Cameron Green (2/44), Scott Boland (2/59) and Mitchell Starc (2/71) were among the wickets for Australia.

Australia’s 469 runs in the first innings were powered largely by centuries from Travis Head (163 in 174 balls, 25 fours and a six), and Steve Smith (121 in 268 balls, 19 fours). David Warner (43) and Marnus Labuschagne (26) made notable contributions, but Australia was reduced to 76/3. From that point, Head and Smith attacked Indian bowlers, hitting their centuries. Later in the innings, Alex Carey also provided some much-needed extra runs with a knock of 48. Siraj (4/108) was the leading bowler for India in the first innings. Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami got two wickets while Jadeja got one.

Travis Head was given the ‘Player of the Match’ title for his attacking 163. Brief Scores: Australia: 469 and 270/8 (Alex Carey 60*, Marnus Labuschagne 41, Ravindra Jadeja 3/58) won over India: 296 and 234 (Virat Kohli 49, Rohit Sharma 43, Nathan Lyon 4/41).

Cong claims India's debt under Modi govt risen to Rs 155 lakh crore, demands white paper on economy 6

The Congress on Saturday alleged that India’s debt has nearly ”tripled” to Rs 155 lakh crore in the nine years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded a white paper on the state of the economy.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate alleged the Modi government’s ”economic mismanagement” is responsible for the present state of the economy and claimed that Rs 100 lakh crore of debt has been added since the present dispensation assumed charge in 2014.

”As chief minister of Gujarat, Mr Modi used to blame those on the other side of the political spectrum as inefficient, incompetent, and corrupt — adjectives that today suit him and his government more than anyone else.

”After ruining India’s economic growth story, creating huge unemployment, raging inflation, Mr. Modi has done the unthinkable, which is an addition of over Rs 100 lakh crore to India’s debt, which is at an alarming level,” she said at a press conference.

The Congress leader also said India’s debt in 2014 was at Rs 55 lakh crore, which has now gone past Rs 155 lakh crore. She claimed that India’s debt under 14 prime ministers in 67 years was Rs 55 lakh crore while Modi alone has increased it by over Rs 100 lakh crore.

”Economic management is not the same thing as headline management. It cannot be done through teleprompters and definitely not through WhatsApp forwards. We demand a white paper on the Indian economy because the fault lines are only getting deeper,” she said. Shrinate also claimed that the bottom 50 percent of Indians who own three percent of the country’s wealth paid 64 percent of the GST collected. The richest 10 percent, on the other hand, own 80 percent of the country’s wealth but pay only three percent of the GST collected.

India has the costliest LPG cylinder, the third costliest petrol, and the eighth costliest diesel in the world, Shrinate claimed.

The Congress leader said a debt of Rs 155 lakh crore means every Indian is reeling under a burden of Rs 1.20 lakh. ”The Modi government in its tenure has bought the debt of Rs 4 lakh rupees every second,” she claimed.

She also added that the government has to pay an annual interest of Rs 11 lakh crore on this debt.

India’s debt-to-GDP ratio has risen to 84 percent, the Congress spokesperson claimed and said it is alarming when compared to other developing and emerging market economies where the average debt-to-GDP ratio is at 64.5 percent.

”India is bearing an annual cost of Rs 11 lakh crore to service this mounting debt. Questions are now being raised on India’s debt servicing capacity. According to the CAG report, government debt was 52.5 percent of GDP in 2019-20 and the debt sustainability had turned negative that year. With debt at 84 percent of the GDP, debt sustainability is suspect,” she asserted.

”But, the big question is who are the beneficiaries of this rising debt because quite clearly it is not the poor, not the middle class, and not the MSMEs. Twenty-three crore people have been pushed below the poverty line, 83 percent of Indians have seen their incomes dip, over 11,000 MSMEs have shut down in a single year but the number of billionaires in India has gone up from 102 in 2020 to 166 over two years. ”But are all these rich beneficiaries of high debt playing their part in India’s growth or paying higher taxes?” she asked and said the government should turn its focus to the other important issue of tax collection. Price rise and unemployment, besides income disparity, have emerged as major issues, she said.

”The bottom 50 percent of India’s population that owns just three percent of the country’s total wealth is paying 64 percent of the GST collected. In contrast, the top 10 percent richest Indians, who own 80 percent of the country’s wealth, pay merely 3-4 percent of the GST collected,” she claimed. ”The government is clearly in denial because it is certain that an indirect tax like the GST or excise duty on fuel has hurt the poor the most. India’s consumption has been consistently weak. The recently released GDP figures that the government touted as a great achievement has a very big red flag — India’s consumption-to-GDP ratio has fallen from 61.1 percent in FY 2022 to 60.6 percent in FY 2023,” she said.

"Along with Congress, BJP too has started following the path of AAP," says Delhi CM Kejriwal on cash transfers 12

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that along with the Congress, BJP has also started following the path shown by AAP adding that guarantees by Congress in Karnataka were a copy of AAP’s manifesto.

Reacting to the announcement made by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on transferring Rs 1000 to women under the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana, Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and said, “Along with Congress, BJP also started following the path shown by AAP. Congress’s guarantees in Karnataka were a copy of AAP’s manifesto. Now in MP BJP has caught the path of AAP. It’s a good thing. There should be welfare of the public. Be it this party or that party. it doesn’t matter.”

Earlier today Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the state government has received 1.25 crore registrations under ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana’. While addressing the press conference, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said,” Today is one of the most significant days of my life. From today evening from Jabalpur, we will start transferring Rs 1000 to women under the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana.’ We have received 1.25 crore registrations.”

“In 12 months, all my sisters will get Rs 12,000 in their accounts. With the introduction of Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana, women will get empowered and will be able to fulfill their basic needs,” he added. Earlier the five ‘main’ guarantees, which Congress promised to fulfill after coming to power in Karnataka, were 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti); Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi); 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya); Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (Yuva Nidhi) and free travel for women in public transport buses (Uchita Prayana).

Also, in the year 2022, the Aam Admi party had made a poll promise in assembly elections of Punjab and Gujarat that if voted to power then the party will credit Rs 1000 per month to the accounts of women who are aged above 18 in the state.

Opposition parties to contest 2024 Lok Sabha polls together: Kapil Sibal 14

Former Union Minister Kapil Sibal said on Saturday that the opposition is clear that it must stand united to bring down the BJP-led government in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and expressed hope that all opposition will come together.

“All of us in the opposition are clear about one thing that we must stand united if we have to fight the 2024 elections and bring down this goverment…I hope all parties in opposition get together,” Sibal told ANI.

Opposition leaders have been holding parleys to put up a joint fight against the BJP in the next Lok Sabha polls. A meeting of opposition parties is slated later this month in Patna. However, the task of fighting together is riddled with challenges with some opposition parties competing with each other in some states.

Sibal also responded to Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s remark in which he termed Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, as “sapoot” of the country.

“Was Godse a good son according to Giriraj Singh?…RSS offered help to Britishers, how can they acknowledge Mahatma Gandhi? So this mindset is against principles of Mahatma Gandhi…,” said Sibal, a Rajya Sabha MP.

“What is the meaning of sapoot? Poot means ‘son’. Sapoot means ‘good son’. The constitution of India has also a responsibility towards the cabinet. That means Grirajji is speaking on behalf of the Government,” Sibal added.

Giriraj Sinh reportedly said that the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi “was not an invader like Mughal rulers Babar and Aurangzeb as he was born in India”.

He was replying to the query about remarks of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi related to Godse while reacting to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s comment on Aurangzeb.

Telangana Temple priest murders his extramarital relation 16

A temple priest Sai Krishna, a married father of two children fell in love with a girl and got involved in an extramarital affair with Apsara. She was a devout follower of a temple. The priest suspect, who works in Venkateshwara colony, falls for the girl. After many advances and special favours the girl gets lured. Here starts the love story, the girl was unaware of the priest’s marital status. They used to spend maximum time in the temple and after the temple doors closed they used to go out on dates. The romance was at peak, a few years the relation continued but later on Apsara had been pressuring him to marry her.

He was in trouble because he never thought Apsara would ever propose to him. Slowly there was discomfort in relation, the priest was interested in only physical relations but he was not inserted in taking any responsibility as he already had a family. Somehow Apsara came to know about his marital status and that made the priest restless. According to Sai Krishna’s confession he planned to kill Apsara.

The accused priest killed Apsara in Shamshabad and then packed her body in a plastic cover before transporting it to Saroornagar. He threw the body into a manhole behind the MRO Office, close to the temple where he served as the priest. He killed Apsara and dumped her body in the drainage. For a few days he remained silent and he was not much interactive.

Since June 4, Apsara did not attend phone calls and her phone was switched off from 11.30am on June 5. The incident came to light after Sai Krishna himself filed a missing complaint, claiming that he had dropped the victim, Kuruganti Apsara, at the Shamshabad bus stand as she was planning to travel to Bhadrachalam. He further stated that she had not been responding to any calls since then and had been missing since May 3. In his complaint, the man claimed the woman in question was his niece.

While lodging a complaint many of the details shared by the complainant, who according to him was the last person to meet her, was not matching with the technical evidence gathered by the police, finally police picked up Krishna and grilled him on the suspicion of foul play. However, as the investigation progressed, the police grew suspicious of Sai Krishna’s account after CCTVs and other technical data were searched. Subsequently, during questioning, Sai Krishna confessed to the crime, revealing that he had killed Apsara.

After sustained interrogation, Krishna finally opened up by confessing that he killed Apsara. When asked about her dead body, he disclosed that Apsara’s body was dumped in a manhole at municipal office premises, which is on the rear side of the temple where he works as a priest. The RGIA police, by informing the local revenue authorities, continued the process of recovering the dead body.

The priest confessed that the victim was in an extramarital relationship with him and she was forcing him to get married. He also said that in the past she had an abortion and she was hassled by that. Now that she is again putting pressure on him to marry, to get rid of her, he killed her.

On June 3, Apsara left her residence informing her mother that she is going to Coimbatore by taking a bus. It was the accused who picked her up from her residence in Venkateshwara colony. The accused is known to her family members as a friend of Apsara, who also belongs to the same caste. The accused took her to Narkuda village in Shamshabad rural limits, where he killed Apsara with a stone. She smashed her head and then body. It is an isolated place, which is familiar to him since he used to visit this area as part of his professional work. From there he shifted her dead body into his car and packed it in a bag and brought her back to Saroornagar and took her dead body to the municipal office, where it was dumped in a manhole. He also used mud to cover her body. He spent hours disposing of her body thinking that he would never be caught. But his own FIR clutched him in the crime he committed. In the past there have been several such cases, men lure a girl for lust, start living together, and when love and lust fades they end up killing their partners.

In most of these murders the lovers have broken all the barriers; they went out and out to be with each other, refuting everyone around. Female becomes vulnerable in such relations because her search for stability somewhere brings burden on men. Men want relationships but no responsibility. A man killing their female partners has gone from something that occurred behind closed doors with little public discussion, to the focus of national headlines and high-level policy attention. How many men killing women can we understand through a purely gendered lens? In other words, how much does looking at this problem through a lens of patriarchal control and toxic masculinity actually explain the problem?

Mira Road murder case: Chopping body has become new style in home killings 18

Fifteen years ago, Saraswati Vaidya was barely 17 and Manoj Sane was 40 years old. Both met each other at a ration shop where Manoj worked. They both were from Ahmednagar. They started meeting frequently and fell in love. Sane had an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate. Saraswati was a school dropout. Sarasvati was from a lower middle-class family and was an orphan; all her sisters stayed in different orphanages, and she was the fourth daughter of her parents. She lost her parents at a very young age. Manoj was well settled by then, and he could provide some comfort to Saraswati. After spending time with each other for months, they decided to get married and stay together.

Saraswati lived in a shelter home, though she had three sisters. When she met Manoj Sane, she decided to live with him. She told people at home that he was her maternal uncle and very wealthy. They moved into Flat No. 704 at the Mira Road apartment building five years ago. They fought, allegedly over Sane’s suspicion that she was cheating on him. Because Sane was now 56 years old and Saraswati was 32, there was a huge age gap between them.

Saraswati and Manoj Sane were secretly married at a temple. She later told her sisters about the wedding, but the couple didn’t tell anyone else because of the huge age difference. The two kept to themselves when they moved into the apartment on Meera Road three years ago. They visited Saraswati’s ashram with gifts for the children. Sane used to earn a minimum salary, but he was getting a rent of around Rs 35,000 from his flat number 701 in a seven-storey Sane Residency in Borivali. The tenant, who has been living there for three years, was quoted as saying that advance cheques were given to Sane, who deposited them every month. The property on which the building came up in 2008 belonged to Sane’s family. Four flats in the building belong to his relatives.

When they moved to rent the flat, the rent agreement was signed by Sane, and there was no mention of Vaidya. Meanwhile, after some time managing the home, paying huge rent, and experiencing joblessness, financial issues lead to domestic violence. They both frequently started fighting with each other. Sane used to earn around Rs 5,000 a month at the shop, while they paid Rs 10,000 in rent. Vaidya is believed to have expressed concerns about household expenses. Sane used to work and had been shut down since May 29, when the license of the store — The Villagers Consumers Cooperative Society Ltd.—was cancelled, forcing him to stay at home. Sane, who lost his job at a ration shop after its license was cancelled last month, Vaidya, who was an orphan and did not work, was financially dependent on Sane.

Vaidya was very possessive in nature and suspected that he was being unfaithful to her whenever he returned home late, and he used to suspect that Saraswati was cheating on him. They used to keep on fighting; the couple lived a very private life. They never spoke to their neighbors and remained largely unknown in their apartment building. Sane told police that in 2008 he discovered that he was HIV positive, and since then he has been on medication.

One fine day, after a continued verbal spat, Manoh strangled Saraswati to death. He would have thought chopping, boiling, and roasting” the body parts of dead live-in partners would keep him away from the eye of the law; it was the “hunt for a dead rat” that finally trapped him in a murder case. Manoj Sane killed his live-in partner and then chopped off her body. He purchased a Rs 4,000-worth chainsaw the same day and got down to slicing the body, which he then pressure cooked and roasted on the gas stove. Police have recovered the victim’s legs and collected two bags of cooked body parts.

The blood-stained 200-volt electric chainsaw as well as the bill for the purchase made from a hardware store in Bhayander (East) have been seized. A tile cutter machine worth Rs 1,000, also purchased by Sane, has been recovered too.

The residents on the seventh floor of the Geeta Akashdeep building in the Geeta Nagar area of Mira Road started scanning their homes and the building terrace for a dead rat after the foul smell on their floor became unbearable. They even knocked on Sane’s door with an appeal for a similar check of his flat, but got no response. Sane slept in one of the two bedrooms while the body parts lay in the kitchen and the other bedroom. The apartment where the accused and the victim stayed belongs to Sonam Builders and had been given to them for the first time.

Sane has claimed to have gotten ideas from the Shraddha Walker murder case. While food blogger Aaftab Poonawala, accused of similarly killing and chopping the body of his live-in partner, call center employee Shraddha Walkar, in May last year, had used a refrigerator to store the body parts, Sane purchased five bottles of nilgiri (eucalyptus) oil to delay the body’s decomposition. Sane slept in one of the two bedrooms while the body parts lay in the kitchen and the other bedroom.

The Uttar Pradesh gangsters gunned down one after another 20

A criminal and gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari Jeeva was an aide of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari who was gunned down a few months back. Gangster-turned-politician ’s close aide Sanjeev Maheshwari alias Jeeva was shot dead inside SC/ST Court in Lucknow. A policeman and a six-year-old girl also suffered injuries in the attack. The attacker came in the attire of an advocate and when Jeeva was about to leave the court, he extensively opened fire. The modus operandi was similar to Mukhtar Ansari’s murder. Ansari and his brother were killed by the guys who pretended to be journalists.
