Who is Rishi Sunak, the new UK prime minister?

When Rishi Sunak was elected by Conservative MPs as their new leader and hence prime minister of the United Kingdom, the British nation breathed a sigh of relief: thank God it wasn’t Boris Johnson.

Had Johnson been re-elected leader it would have had serious consequences, not just for the Conservatives, but in the real world too.

Only the most obtuse political observer could have failed to see that the optics of cutting short your Caribbean holiday to try to resolve a cost of the living crisis was not good politics. It sounds hard to believe, but this was not obvious to everyone.

Johnson garnered public support from some of the Brexiteer old guards like Jacob Rees-Mogg and in the pro-Boris media.

But in characteristic fashion, Johnson exaggerated his chances. This latest act of self-promotion backfired and he withdrew from the leadership race on Sunday (regretably having missed half his holiday). Nevertheless, the fact that many Conservatives seriously thought a chaotic government could be brought under control by someone known for chaotic management, shows how deep the ideological divisions within the party have become.

With the third contender, Penny Mordaunt, falling just shy of the 100 MPs’ votes needed to send the leadership contest to a vote of the grassroots party members – a fate to be avoided at all costs after they forfeited the confidence of MPs by installing Truss – Rishi Sunak will become the next prime minister of the UK.

Sunak’s elevation is a socially significant moment. He is the first British Asian, or any person of colour, to become PM. Much of the credit can go to David Cameron’s attempts to modernise the Conservative party in the mid-2000s. The Conservatives have done a better job than other parties in putting more women and people of colour into positions of political influence and power. In a system that only had its first openly Catholic prime minister in 2019, Sunak is the first Hindu to assume that role.

But the significance of the first person of colour as British Prime Minister will probably get lost in the class dynamics of this political moment.

Like Johnson, Sunak isn’t short of a bob or two. This will make the economic politics of Sunak’s tenure difficult. Having a multi-millionaire telling the nation to tighten its belts and make sacrifices to its already declining living standards won’t go down well.

And like Johnson, Sunak also went to an elite private school. In Sunak’s case, it was Winchester rather than Eton, just for a bit of variety. This will matter for perceptions of the new PM among the wider electorate. The Conservatives are seen as a party of – and for – the wealthy. They increasingly appear as a small, ageing and out-of-touch privileged class unable to see the true extent of the crisis that their choices in government have exacerbated.

Sunak’s in-tray is bulging. The cost of living and energy crises will be the foremost political and economic challenges, but the B-word (Brexit) still casts a shadow. It has not lived up to the over-inflated expectations of its most ardent boosters. Increasing numbers of voters think it was wrong to leave the EU. How Sunak manages this coming “winter of discontent” will define his premiership.

However, the policy levers he has at his disposal have been discredited by the Truss-onomics episode. Truss’s long-term legacy may well be the conclusion that neoliberal economics worked well in theory, but not in practice.

Sunak will probably enjoy a longer honeymoon period than his predecessor. His election has calmed one part of the Conservatives’ core constituency: the bond markets. However, his future with the electorate is less secure. For better or worse, leaders influence how people choose to vote; or at least parties behave as if this were true. His legitimacy with the electorate is not as strong as it could be given that he is the third Conservative leader and PM since the last election in 2019.

Calls for a general election are growing. Presumably, with the Conservatives so far behind in the polls, Sunak will try to hold on as long as possible. But this may only prolong the pain and defer a significant loss of seats whenever the next election arrives.

This all feels a bit like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. Part of the difficulty for the Conservatives points to a growing structural problem for centre-right parties: intra-party ideological divisions. This issue has weakened the centre left for a couple of decades. These parties saw their support base split between tertiary-educated urban dwellers interested in post-material issues, and blue-collar supporters from declining manufacturing industries with some residual, but weakening, loyalty to social democracy.

Now such divisions seem to be affecting the right of politics too. As we saw in the 2022 federal election in Australia, the right’s traditional support base is split between affluent moderates concerned about climate change, and older social conservatives concerned about immigration. This appears to be happening in the UK too.

This internal division can be exploited by the opposition as we saw with the fracking vote. On paper, Sunak should feel secure with a 71-seat majority in a 650-seat parliament. But the Conservatives have lost confidence. The party is behaving like one that has only the slimmest of majorities and is on its way out. Sunak’s premiership may well be a case of the band playing on.

PM Modi said “India has never considered war as the first option but it is a last resort”

India has always viewed war as the last resort, but the armed forces have the strength and strategies to give a befitting reply to anyone who casts an evil eye on the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.

Addressing the armed forces here on Diwali, the prime minister also recalled his visit to this frontier region in the aftermath of the Kargil conflict in 1999 when the Indian military had “crushed the hood of terror”. “There has not been a single war with Pakistan when Kargil has not flown the victory flag,” he said adding that Diwali symbolised the “celebration of the end of terror”. “I have witnessed the Kargil war closely. It was my duty that had brought me to Kargil back then. There are many memories of that time when the sounds of victory were reverberating all around,” Modi said, continuing with the tradition set by him to celebrate Diwali at the country’s frontiers.

“In Kargil, our armed forces had crushed the hood of terror and people still remember the Diwali that was celebrated back then,” he said. He said over the last eight years, the government has worked on implementing reforms in the armed forces by deploying new technologies, developing infrastructure in border areas and opening up positions for women in the forces. “The induction of women in the armed forces will boost our strength,” Modi said and added that reforms in the armed forces that were required for decades are now being implemented.

The prime minister said a nation is safe when its borders are secure, economy strong and society full of confidence. India has been dealing with its enemies, both external and internal, with force, Modi said and recounted the steps taken to “uproot” the “terror, naxalism and extremism” from within the country. He said India has never viewed war as the first option. “We have always seen war as the final resort. We are in favour of global peace.. But peace cannot be achieved without strength,” Modi said. “Our armed forces have the strategies as well as the strength. If anyone dares cast an evil eye on us, our three armed forces know very well how to give a befitting reply,” the prime minister said. Prime Minister Modi also said that ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ most important to the nation’s security and the country’s dependence should be minimal on foreign weapons and systems. Since coming to power in 2014, Modi has been visiting different military facilities to celebrate Diwali.

Rishi Sunak is all set to become PM of UK, as Boris Johnson dropped out of the race

The United Kingdom is all set to have its first Prime Minister of Indian origin, Rishi Sunak, as former PM Boris Johnson dropped out of the race, according to UK media reports.

Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the Conservative party leadership race despite claiming he had the required support.

Johnson said he had come to the conclusion “this would simply not be the right thing to do” as “you can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament,” reported Independent.ie.

He also added that this was due to the failure to reach a deal with Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt. “I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds,” he said.

Johnson added, “I believe I have much to offer but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time.”

“I believe I am well placed to deliver a Conservative victory in 2024 – and tonight I can confirm that I have cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations, including a proposer and a seconder, and I could put my nomination in tomorrow.”

“There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative Party members – and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday. “But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament,” he continued saying, reported Independent.

It is pertinent to note that Johnson’s campaign team have earlier told supporters they have secured the 100 nominations needed from MPs for the former prime minister to get on the ballot paper.

Johnson landed in Britain on Saturday from a Caribbean holiday which was seemed as a formal bid for the Conservative Party leadership race. Johnson was forced to step down on July 7 following a series of resignations of cabinet members, who protested against his scandal-plagued leadership. Earlier, Johnson had expressed his willingness to enter the PM race, saying he is “up for it.”

Meanwhile, Britain’s former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday declared his candidature to contest the UK Prime Ministerial race after Liz Truss resigned as PM and left the country in a state of political turmoil.

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer of Indian descent confirmed the decision through his social media and said that he wants to fix Britain’s economy which is in a major crisis at present.

In a tweet, Sunak tweeted and said, “The United Kingdom is a great country, but we face a profound economic crisis. That’s why I am standing to be Leader of the Conservative Party and your next Prime Minister.”

“I want to fix our economy, unite our Party and deliver for our country,” Sunak wrote. Sunak’s announcement comes after Truss’ resignation as Prime Minister on Thursday as the opposition reiterated its demand for a general election.

On Friday, Penny Mordaunt, the Tory leader in the House of Commons too threw her hat in the ring. “I’ve been encouraged by support from colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership in the national interest,” Mordaunt tweeted.

Tory MPs will vote on Monday, and two candidates will be put forward to the Tory leadership unless one backpedals from the race. The result will be announced on Friday, October 28.

Notably, Truss became the shortest-serving British PM after she stepped down just 45 days after being elected as Britain’s leader, stating that she recognizes she “cannot deliver the mandate” on which she was elected.

Truss said she would step aside for a new leader to be chosen within the next week. In view of Truss’ resignation, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer issued a scathing statement that ripped into the Conservative Party and called for a general election.

“After 12 years of Tory failure the British people deserve so much better than this revolving door of chaos. We need a general election now,” he said.

The resignation of Truss was preceded by the sacking of UK Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng and the resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Kerala CM Vijjyan said “the governor does not have authority to seek resignation of vice chancellors”

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday lashed out at Governor Arif Mohammed Khan for seeking resignation of vice chancellors of nine universities in the state.

Vijayan said the Governor has no such powers and accused him of acting against the Constitution and the essence of democracy.

The Chief Minister alleged that the Governor’s move was an encroachment on the powers of a democratically elected government, and the universities that are supposed to be academically independent.

A day after Khan kicked up a political storm seeking resignation of vice chancellors of nine varsities in the state, Vijayan said it was an unusual move and accused him of “waging war” with an intention to “destroy” the universities in the state.

“It was the Governor who appointed the VCs of these nine universities and if these appointments were made illegally, then the primary responsibility lies with the Governor himself,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the chancellor has no authority to seek their resignations.

Armed with a recent Supreme Court order quashing appointment of the vice chancellor (VC) of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University here for being contrary to University Grants Commission regulations, Khan on Sunday sought resignations of VCs of nine varsities in the state.

The Raj Bhavan said Khan, as Chancellor of universities in the state, also issued directions for the resignations to reach him by 11.30 am on Monday.

Nischalananda Saraswati is the most humble saint and genius scholar

I wanted to call Nischalananda Saraswati who is the current 145th Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the Purvamnaya Shri Govardhana Peetham of Puri, Odisha to my award event “Pillars of Hindutva”. His name was endorsed and suggested to me by many think tanks. Some even told me that reaching him is not possible because his parikars (one who serves him) will not let you meet him. He is surrounded by many of his disciples and devotees. Most of them have some or the other role to play.

One fine morning I dialled his number that was available on Google; to my surprise, one humble gentleman not only answered my call but directed me to connect with Swamiji’s media manager Prem Chandra Jha. I called Mr Jha and then he asked me to reach Nagpur to greet Swamiji. Getting a flight to Nagpur was next to impossible. Flights, Buses and trains all were full. One or two flights were there but they were supposed to reach Nagpur via many places after 12 hours of journey. I just let it be, and all of sudden my travel desk told me about the availability of one seat on the flight, I thought that I was destined to meet Swamiji and my journey began.

I reached Nagpur at midnight and the next morning went to meet Swamiji. I was under the impression that the Swamiji must be in his lavish arrangements and there would be lots of fences before I greet him. When I reached the venue, there I was respectfully received by his disciples. My only curiosity was to greet Swamiji, at last, I got to sit in front of him. I was moved to see the simplicity, humbleness, kindness and above all the intellectual approach of Swamiji. He is the author of hundreds of books; he is an excellent orator and presenter. He is guiding thousands of youths and professionals to research and explore Vedic mathematics. Vedic Mathematics is a collection of Methods or Sutras to solve numerical computations quickly and faster. Nischalananda Saraswati Ji is a genius mathematician.

He was in simple saffron clothes, without much demand. He was drinking his water from a copper pot. He was unlike those spiritual leaders who cannot even lift a glass to drink water or wash their hands on their own. These days’ spiritual practices and Babaism have become commercial businesses. The Glory and fame of these so-called Babas are calculated by their wealth and lavishes. Most of them are uneducated goons; those babas are nothing but fiddles.

Nischalananda Saraswati has ways of managing his life and his needs are very limited. His thrust is a divine accomplishment. He is educating thousands of people; he inspires many minds and motivates them to explore life from their own perspective. There is no greed or demand for money. There is no forceful demand. If someone wishes to do something for them, they welcome them with open arms.

Niscalananda Saraswati’s guru was Hariharanand Saraswati popularly known as Swami Karpatri (because he would eat only what would come in his palm ‘kara’, as the bowl ‘pātra’), was born as Hari Narayan Ojha into a Saryupareen Brahmin family of Uttar Pradesh, India. He was a sannyasi in the Hindu Dashanami monastic tradition.

Niscalananda Saraswati’s father was a high-ranking scholar of Sanskrit in the Mithila tradition and was a court vidwan of the then king of Mithila (Darbhanga Kingdom). The Swami’s previous name was Nilambar, given by his elder brother Pandit Sridev Jha. In his childhood, Nilambar was very studious and intelligent. At age 17, he left his home and started in pursuit of his life journey. In one of the seminars involving all the branches of Vedas, Dharma Samrat (emperor of dharma), Karpatri-Ji Maharaj and the then Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth Swami Sri Krishna Bodh Ashram-Ji Maharaj were present. On that occasion, he accepted Karpatri-Ji Maharaj as his spiritual master. He was given the name Dhruvachaitanya by Swami Sri Naradanand Saraswati of Naimisharanya. He studied the Vedas and various branches related to Vedas at various places like Kashi, Vrindavan, Naimisharanya, Badrikashram, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Puri, Sringeri etc. Dhruvachaitanya fought hard against carnage on cows, considered a symbol of faith among Hindus while participating actively in Dharma Samrat Karpatriji Maharaj’s agitation for cow protection.  He was kept in the Tihar jail from 9th November 1966 for 52 days for advocating cow protection.

The Shankaracharya of Puri has been travelling far and wide across India like the first guru Adi Shankaracharya to protect Sanatana dharma, its values and glories. He has been addressing and advocating the concerns of harmony in India, protection of its territories, women empowerment, and environmental issues. He has set up two organizations Aditya Vahini and Ananda Vahini under the patronage of ‘Peeth Parishad’ with the objective of creating an intelligent, self-reliant society, by protecting values. Through these two organizations, he is spearheading a nationwide campaign to protect the ancient culture of our Sanatan Dharma. He is a true saint and guiding scholar; my generation is really privileged to have him around us.

A special action plan for the permanent benefit of farmers will be prepared soon along with a host of measures that have been taken for the development of the agriculture sector in the last three months, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said in Nashik on Friday.

He was addressing an event to mark the start of the cane crushing season of Nashik Cooperative Sugar Factory in Palse here. “After coming to power in the state (on June 30), our government has taken 72 big decisions.

These include Bhuvikas Bank loan waiver of Rs 964 crore.

We have also changed the criteria for compensation for crop damage due to heavy rains.

The aid for loss due to the rain has been increased to Rs 15,000,” he said. “Our government fully supports farmers and a special action plan for permanent benefit of farmers will be prepared soon,” he added.

The CM said 95 tonnes of sugarcane production per hectare is expected this season, leading to total production of 138 lakh tonnes of sugar through 203 factories. “Last year, Maharashtra produced more sugar than Uttar Pradesh. The country has 60 lakh metric tonne stock of sugar and out of it, 30 lakh tonnes is in Maharashtra. It is expected that India will export 100 lakh metric tonnes of sugar, with Maharashtra leading with a contribution of 60 lakh metric tonnes,” he said. British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has revealed that he felt “hurt” when his James Bond theme song was shelved for Billie Eilish’s hit track, ‘No Time to Die’.

According to Page Six, when talking on ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’, Sheeran said he had “already started” writing the song when suddenly he was replaced by the 7-time Grammy-winning teen superstar. “They changed directors and then they just changed scripts and that was it. We had done all the meetings, I started writing it,” the 31-year-old singer said.

When asked if he would still be willing to sing a Bond theme tune in the future, it was a clear-cut yes. “Yeah, of course. I’m not gonna pretend it didn’t hurt not doing it, but yeah I would,” he added.

“I think eventually as an English singer you’ve got to eventually do a Bond song. If they came back, I’d be like, ‘Yeah, of course,'” continued Sheeran, reported Page Six. Eilish’s official theme song for the blockbuster ‘No Time to Die’ made her the youngest artist to ever write a song for the 007 franchise.

The hit track won the 2022 Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’, as well as a Grammy Award for ‘Best Song Written for Visual Media.

As per Page Six, Eilish wrote the song with her 22-year-old brother and musical collaborator Finneas O’Connell, with orchestral arrangements by renowned composer and Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and British conductor Matt Dunkley.

BJP alleges actor Ritesh Deshmukh and his wife Genelia got a plot for their company in weeks time during MVA govt

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary has alleged Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh and his wife Genelia Deshmukh’s agro-processing company got a Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) plot out of turn in their hometown Latur during the tenure of the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

BJP’s Latur city vice-president Pradeep More said the company, M/s Desh Agro Pvt Ltd, was formed by Riteish Deshmukh and his wife, who is also an actor, with a capital of Rs 7.5 crore and they own 50 per cent stake each in the firm.

The company was allotted a plot by the state-run industrial corporation in Latur within weeks of its formation in 2021 and just ten days after an application was submitted for the allotment, he claimed. Despite repeated attempts, the actor-couple was unavailable for comments, but their company denied any illegality in allotment of the plot and said all norms were followed.

More said the company was formed on March 23, 2021 and on April 5, 2021, it applied for a plot for building an agro-processing plant.

The company was allotted the plot on April 15, 2021. “The company’s capital was worth Rs 7.5 crore, but it paid Rs 15,28,99,300 for a 2,52,726 square metre plot. For this, the company was charged Rs 605 per square metre,” the BJP functionary said. MIDC allots land at concessional rates to promote industrial ventures in the state. Desh Agro Pvt Ltd was handed over the plot on July 22, 2021, he said.

“Sixteen applications (for a plot) were pending before the MIDC for the last two years, but this company (Desh Agro Pvt Ltd) got an approval in 22 days since its formation,” he said.

The Shiv Sena-led ruling coalition MVA, which also consisted of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was in power in Maharashtra during that period. Riteish Deshmukh is the son of Maharashtra’s former chief minister late Vilasrao Deshmukh. His elder brother Amit Deshmukh was a minister in the MVA government (November 2019-June 2022), while his younger brother is an MLA from Latur district.

Despite repeated attempts, the actor-couple was unavailable for comments on the issue plot allotment issue. More said the actors’ company applied for a loan on October 4, 2021, with the Pandharpur Urban Cooperative Bank and disbursal of Rs 4 crore was approved 23 days later on October 27.

The firm applied for a second loan with the Latur District Central Cooperative Bank and Rs 61 crore was approved on October 27, 2021. It took another loan of Rs 55 crore from the bank on July 25, 2022, said the BJP functionary. “We have sought a probe in both (MIDC plot land allotment and loans raised),” More said. Desh Agro Pvt Ltd’s establishment manager Dinesh Kesre termed the charges levelled by the BJP functionary as baseless. The plot has been leased to the company as per law. The loans, too, have been taken following proper procedure, he claimed.

Maha Govt restores general consent to CBI for probing cases in the state

Maharashtra Government CBI Investigations

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Friday restored general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for probing cases in the state, sources said.

It means the CBI will now no longer be required to take permission from the state government for the investigation of cases in the state.

Earlier, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray had withdrawn the general consent to the CBI to investigate cases in the state.

Uddhav Thackeray had in October 2020 signed the Home Department’s proposal to withdraw general consent to the CBI to investigate the cases in the state. Anil Deshmukh was the state’s home minister at that time. The decision was taken at a time when the CBI had been probing several cases in the state.

The MVA government had repeatedly accused the Centre of misusing central agencies against the Opposition parties.
