Shashi Tharoor Questions Full Rendition of Vande Mataram at Official Events, Calls It 'Unnecessary' 2

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has questioned the practice of playing all five verses of Vande Mataram at the beginning and end of official functions, describing it as an “unnecessary and burdensome” requirement for audiences.

Speaking to reporters in Kerala on Monday amid the ongoing debate over the rendition of the national song at official events, Tharoor said there was no dispute over respecting Vande Mataram, but making the full version mandatory at every programme was difficult to justify.

“Vande Mataram is the national song and we stand up in respect when it is sung. The first verse, or the first couple of verses, is something most people know by heart,” he said.

The Congress Working Committee member noted that the traditional practice had been to sing Vande Mataram once at the beginning of an event, while the national anthem was often played separately at the conclusion.

“Now they want all five verses to be sung at the beginning of every event and again at the end. I think that is an unnecessary imposition,” Tharoor remarked.

Referring to the controversy in Kerala, he said the state government had maintained that singing the full version was optional, while Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar appeared to hold a different view.

“It may ultimately have to be adjudicated because there is no law passed by Parliament requiring this. It is more a matter of convention,” he said.

Tharoor emphasised that he had no objection to the national song itself and reiterated his respect for it.

“We all respect Vande Mataram. I can happily sing it for you,” he said.

Recalling a recent book launch event attended by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan in New Delhi, Tharoor said the complete rendition of the song was played both at the start and end of the programme.

“For the audience, standing through a relatively unfamiliar and lengthy song twice became an issue,” he observed.

According to Tharoor, the portion of Vande Mataram traditionally sung in public is roughly comparable in duration to the national anthem and has long enjoyed widespread acceptance.

Describing the controversy as “unfortunate”, he expressed hope that the matter would be resolved amicably.

“I can understand singing it once during ceremonial occasions involving the President, Vice President or Prime Minister. But singing the entire song twice during a short programme is difficult to understand. I don’t see the rationale for it, and it is not particularly efficient either,” he said.

CBSE Activates Class 12 Re-Evaluation Portal After Technical Delays and Security Review 4

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday activated its portal for Class 12 students to apply for verification of marks and re-evaluation, following multiple delays caused by technical issues and cybersecurity concerns.

Announcing the development on social media platform X, the board confirmed that the portal is now operational and advised students to carefully follow the application guidelines before submitting their requests.

“Dearest Students, The verification and re-evaluation portal is now LIVE! Please watch the video carefully for step-by-step instructions on how to apply for Verification of Marks and re-evaluation,” CBSE Headquarters posted.

The portal was initially scheduled to be launched on June 1 but its activation was postponed due to technical difficulties. The delay sparked anxiety among students and parents, particularly after reports emerged of glitches in the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

Several students had complained that they received scanned copies of answer sheets belonging to other candidates while accessing documents through the OnMark portal. CBSE later acknowledged the issue and provided the affected students with their correct answer scripts.

The board stated that all complaints related to alleged answer-sheet mismatches and other re-evaluation concerns were being addressed on a priority basis.

Earlier, CBSE had said that vulnerabilities detected in the OnMark portal, managed by its service provider, had been contained. The board added that efforts were underway to identify and eliminate any remaining security risks to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

To further strengthen the platform, CBSE has deployed a team of cybersecurity experts from various government agencies and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The experts are working to enhance the portal’s security infrastructure and safeguard the integrity of the evaluation and re-evaluation process.

The activation of the portal comes as a relief to thousands of Class 12 students awaiting an opportunity to verify their marks and seek re-evaluation of their answer sheets.

TMC Expels Two MLAs Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities Amid 'Fake Signature' Row 6

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday expelled its MLAs Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee from the party, accusing them of engaging in anti-party activities and acting against the organisation’s interests.

The action came shortly after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated at a press conference at the state secretariat that the two legislators had filed complaints related to the alleged “fake signature” controversy in the state Assembly. The dispute pertains to the TMC’s endorsement of Shobandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition.

In separate communications issued to the two MLAs, the party alleged that despite being elected on TMC tickets, they had repeatedly failed to attend meetings convened by the party’s authorised leadership.

“It has been brought to the notice of the All India Trinamool Congress through its competent authority that, despite having been elected as candidates nominated by the AITC, you have repeatedly failed to attend meetings convened by the authorised leadership of the party and have made yourself involved in anti-party activities,” the letter stated.

The party further accused the legislators of making statements and engaging in actions that were detrimental to the interests of the Trinamool Congress.

“It has also been observed that you have engaged in activities and made statements that are prejudicial to the interests of AITC,” the communication added.

The expulsion letters, signed by TMC Vice-President Chandrima Bhattacharya, stated that after reviewing the matter, the party’s competent authority had decided to expel both leaders from the primary membership of the Trinamool Congress with immediate effect.

The move marks a fresh political development within the ruling party and comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the Assembly’s opposition leadership issue.

SC Rejects Plea for NEET-UG Re-Test in CBT Mode, Says NTA Already Under Pressure 8

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a plea seeking the conduct of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination in computer-based test (CBT) mode, observing that the National Testing Agency (NTA) is already dealing with significant challenges following the cancellation of the exam.

A bench comprising Justices P. S. Narasimha and Aravind Kumar posted the petition, filed by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh and others, for hearing on July 27. However, the court made it clear that the June 21 re-test would not be conducted in CBT mode and would proceed as scheduled under the existing pen-and-paper format.

“There is no question of conducting the re-examination in CBT mode. They (the NTA) are already having too many problems. The examination was cancelled, and now it is being re-conducted. Either we dismiss this petition now or after the vacation,” the bench remarked during the hearing.

Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Satyam Singh Rajput informed the court that the only relief being pressed was the request to hold the re-test in CBT mode. The bench, however, noted that similar petitions had been dismissed earlier.

When Rajput reiterated concerns about conducting the examination physically, Justice Narasimha advised him to appreciate the pressure currently being faced by the NTA.

The NEET-UG 2026 examination, originally conducted on May 3, was cancelled by the NTA on May 12 following allegations of a question paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the matter, while a fresh examination has been scheduled for June 21.

During an earlier hearing on May 29, the Supreme Court observed that students should not be disappointed and stressed that the larger issue of examination irregularities would persist until genuine accountability is established.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had informed the court that the government was taking the concerns of students seriously and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally monitoring the situation to ensure there were no lapses in the re-examination process. He also stated that additional safeguards and mechanisms had been introduced for the June 21 re-test.

The apex court is also hearing a batch of petitions seeking structural reforms in the examination system, including the replacement or restructuring of the NTA with a more robust and autonomous body.

In an affidavit submitted before the court, the NTA stated that it plans to conduct NEET-UG in CBT mode from next year onwards after consultations with the central government.

The controversy follows the alleged NEET paper leak of 2024, after which the Supreme Court had declined to cancel the examination but issued several directions aimed at preventing future paper leaks and strengthening the integrity of public examinations.

CJP's Abhijeet Dipke to Return to India, Launch Protest Seeking Dharmendra Pradhan's Resignation 10

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke has announced that he will return to India on June 6 to launch a peaceful protest in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged lapses and controversies surrounding examinations.

In a video shared on Instagram, Dipke appealed to students and supporters across the country to join the campaign, claiming that repeated examination-related disruptions and controversies have created anxiety among students and raised serious concerns about accountability.

“The time has come for all of us to come together, following the path of the Constitution of India, and peacefully raise our voices to demand Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. If we raise our voices together, they will definitely have to listen to us,” Dipke said.

He urged citizens to unite and express their concerns through constitutional and democratic means, stressing that collective and peaceful action could compel authorities to address the issues raised by students.

Announcing his travel plans, Dipke said he would arrive in Delhi on the morning of June 6 and invited supporters to gather at the airport upon his arrival.

“I have decided that I will arrive in Delhi on Saturday morning, June 6. Please join me at the airport and together we will go to the Parliament Street Police Station to seek permission for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar,” he said.

The Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-driven social media movement founded by Dipke, has gained significant attention online since its inception and has attracted support from several public figures and young followers.

The proposed protest comes amid growing debate over examination management and demands for greater transparency and accountability in the education sector.

MHADA Flags 82 Mumbai Buildings as Highly Dangerous, Launches Evacuation Ahead of Monsoon 12

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has identified 82 cessed buildings in Mumbai’s island city area as “highly dangerous” during its annual pre-monsoon structural survey and has begun evacuating residents from these structures to avert potential mishaps during the monsoon season.

In a statement issued on Friday, MHADA said the survey was conducted by its Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board. Of the 82 buildings declared unsafe, 43 had already been classified as highly dangerous in the previous year.

According to the authority, the identified buildings are occupied by 2,736 people, including 2,256 residential occupants and 480 non-residential tenants and residents.

As part of the evacuation drive, notices have been issued to 176 residential occupants directing them to vacate the premises immediately. Of these, 29 tenants have already shifted to MHADA transit camps, while 36 families have arranged alternative accommodation on their own.

The authority said eviction notices are being served to the remaining occupants, and the process of vacating the buildings is underway. MHADA estimates that accommodation arrangements may be required for around 2,102 occupants in transit camps and has initiated the necessary procedures to facilitate their relocation.

Appealing for public cooperation, MHADA urged residents living in the identified structures to comply with evacuation notices and follow safety guidelines issued by officials. The authority stressed that timely evacuation is crucial to prevent loss of life and property during the monsoon.

Residents have also been advised to immediately report any signs of structural distress, cracks, partial collapses or other safety concerns in old buildings.

For assistance, citizens can contact the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board’s control room on 23536945, 23517423, or the mobile helpline number 9321637699. Complaints can also be reported to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) control room.

The annual pre-monsoon survey is conducted to identify unsafe structures across Mumbai, where ageing cessed buildings often pose a significant risk during heavy rainfall.

CUET-UG 2026 Hit by Technical Glitch at Some Centres, NTA Revises Afternoon Exam Schedule 14

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday said the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) 2026 was delayed at some examination centres due to a technical glitch, prompting a revision in the afternoon session schedule.

According to the NTA, the issue was reported by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the technology partner for the examination. The agency said the glitch has been resolved and candidates are being provided full compensatory time to ensure that no one is disadvantaged.

“TCS has reported that a technical glitch at their end delayed the commencement of CUET-UG 2026 at some centres on Saturday. The issue has since been resolved, and the exam is being conducted with full compensatory time so that no candidate is disadvantaged,” the NTA said in a post on X.

Following the disruption, the afternoon session timings were revised. Candidates were asked to report and complete entry formalities from 2:30 pm, while the examination was rescheduled to begin at 4:00 pm instead of the originally planned 3:00 pm.

The agency clarified that candidates appearing in the morning session would receive the full duration of the examination and would be allowed to leave only after completing the allotted test time.

Expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, the NTA apologised to students and parents affected by the delay.

To assist candidates, the agency has also activated support channels, including a helpline number (+91-11-40759000) and an email helpdesk (cuet-ug@nta.ac.in).

Introduced in 2022, CUET-UG is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the NTA for admission to undergraduate programmes in central, state, and select private universities across India. The exam was launched to streamline admissions through a common platform and evaluates students on language proficiency, domain-specific subjects, and general aptitude in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Manoj Jarange Begins Ninth Indefinite Fast, Escalates Pressure on Maharashtra Govt Over Maratha Quota 16

Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange on Saturday launched his ninth indefinite hunger strike in Maharashtra’s Jalna district, intensifying pressure on the state government to address long-pending demands related to the Maratha quota issue.

The protest began at Antarwali Sarati village, around 400 kilometres from Mumbai, where Jarange commenced his fast in the open under the scorching summer sun without any canopy or protective shelter.

As the agitation gathered momentum, Maharashtra’s Maratha Reservation Cabinet Sub-Committee Chairman and Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil rushed to the protest site to hold discussions with Jarange and persuade him to withdraw the fast.

Jarange has repeatedly accused the government of delaying action on the community’s demands and warned that Marathas should not be subjected to an “agni pariksha” (trial by fire). He has vowed to continue the protest until concrete steps are taken by the state administration.

The activist renewed his key demand for the issuance of Kunbi caste certificates to eligible members of the Maratha community, which would enable them to avail benefits under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota.

He has also sought implementation of the Hyderabad and Satara Gazette records, withdrawal of cases registered against Maratha quota protesters during previous agitations, and the creation of a dedicated ministry for the Maratha community on the lines of the existing ministry for OBCs.

Soon after the fast commenced, Vikhe Patil appealed to Jarange to move under a shed and assured him that the government was making sincere efforts to resolve the reservation issue through dialogue.

Jarange’s latest agitation comes amid continuing political and social debate over Maratha reservation and the demand for inclusion within the OBC category, an issue that has remained at the centre of Maharashtra politics for several years.

Relief from Heat, But Rain Wreaks Havoc: Deaths Reported Across States as IMD Forecasts More Showers 18

The spell of rain that brought much-needed relief from the intense summer heat across large parts of India has also triggered widespread disruption, claiming lives and causing damage to property in several states.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in Delhi have dropped sharply over the past 48 hours, with some weather stations recording a fall of more than 9 degrees Celsius. The weather office has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall in the national capital until May 31.

For Saturday, Delhi is expected to record a minimum temperature of around 23 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms accompanied by rain.

In Uttar Pradesh, the weather department has predicted widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over the next two days, along with strong winds, lightning, hailstorms and heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed tragic weather-related incidents in Bhind district, where three people lost their lives and at least four others were injured on Friday evening. Strong winds accompanying the rain uprooted trees and caused walls and roofs to collapse.

According to officials, one person died and two others were injured in separate roof and wall collapse incidents in Atarsoha tehsil. Another person died in Sadripura village of Bhind tehsil, while one person was killed and two girls were injured in Sarva village of Gohad tehsil. Authorities said efforts were underway to identify the deceased, while the injured were admitted to hospitals for treatment. Several cattle were also reportedly killed due to the severe weather conditions.

In West Bengal, seven people died in rain-related incidents across six districts as thunderstorms lashed Kolkata and several parts of south Bengal. The adverse weather also affected operations at Kolkata airport, where flight arrivals and departures were reportedly suspended for more than an hour due to waterlogging on airstrips.

The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has forecast enhanced thunderstorm activity over south Bengal over the next two days due to favourable wind patterns and strong moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal.

Neighbouring Odisha is expected to witness a mix of humid conditions and severe weather. Hot and humid weather is likely in coastal districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.

The IMD has issued an orange warning for several districts, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Deogarh, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are likely.

A yellow warning has also been issued for multiple districts across the state, urging residents to remain alert.

Jharkhand also experienced rainfall, while Uttarakhand has been forecast to receive a fresh spell of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and snowfall in higher-altitude areas. The IMD has issued a watch warning for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.

With rain activity expected to continue in several regions through the weekend, authorities have advised people to remain cautious and follow weather advisories issued by local administrations.

CBI to Recreate Twisha Sharma Death Scene Using 80-kg Dummy; Samarth, Giribala to Demonstrate Events 20

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to recreate the circumstances surrounding the death of former model and actor Twisha Sharma by taking the accused, Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh, to their residence and conducting a reconstruction of the events, according to reports.

The reconstruction exercise is aimed at verifying claims made by Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband, who has maintained that he brought her down after finding her hanging and that his mother, former district judge Giribala Singh, helped untie the knot around her neck.

According to a report by NDTV, the CBI plans to use an 80-kg dummy during the exercise. Samarth Singh will reportedly be asked to demonstrate how he brought Twisha down from the noose, while Giribala Singh will be required to show how she untied the knot.

Investigators are expected to conduct a detailed analysis to determine whether Samarth’s account is consistent with the physical evidence, crime scene conditions and other findings gathered during the investigation.

The probe team is also expected to examine whether the belt allegedly used in the incident could have supported the weight of the dummy, as part of efforts to assess the plausibility of the statements made by the accused.

The development comes days after the CBI arrested Giribala Singh in connection with the case. Her arrest followed the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s decision to quash her anticipatory bail. Samarth Singh, a lawyer by profession, was already in the agency’s custody.

The CBI formally took over the investigation earlier this week and re-registered the FIR originally filed by the Madhya Pradesh Police, naming both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh as accused.

Twisha Sharma was allegedly found hanging at her matrimonial home on May 12. According to the FIR, Samarth Singh took her to AIIMS Bhopal, informing doctors that she had hanged herself at home around 10:20 pm. The hospital subsequently informed police that she was brought dead.

The post-mortem report later concluded that the cause of death was “antemortem hanging by ligature.” However, it also noted the presence of multiple ante-mortem injuries on other parts of her body, described as simple injuries that could have been caused by blunt force.

Following the autopsy findings and statements recorded from Twisha’s family members, police registered an FIR on May 15. The investigation is now being carried out by the CBI.
