Pop sensation Lady Gaga has opened about being raped at 19 and how the traumatic experience changed her life.

The singer first revealed she had been raped as a teenager during an interview last year.

“I didn’t tell anyone for I think seven years. I didn’t know how to think about it, I didn’t know how to accept it. I didn’t know how to not blame myself or think it was my fault.

“It’s something that really changed my life. It changed who I was completely. It changed my body, it changed my thoughts,” she said.

When asked how it changed her physically, Gaga explained, “When you go through a trauma like that, it doesn’t just have the immediate physical ramifications.”

Gaga, 29, also explained that it took her years to learn not to blame herself for what happened.

“Because of the way that I dress, and the way that I’m provocative as a person, I thought that I had brought it on myself in some way. That it was my fault.”

I was a tomboy while growing up: Suki Waterhouse

Suki Waterhouse

Model Suki Waterhouse says she was “such a tomboy” during her growing up years, and that she didn’t really come to be interested in beauty until she joined the fashion industry.

“My earliest beauty memories are all of really messing it up – trying to shave my legs when I was 10 years old and being yelled at, or having a unibrow and trying to shave that, too. I really wasn’t very clued-up as a young girl,” Waterhouse told The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine.

“It took me being in the beauty industry for a while to work it out, in fact. I didn’t have much of an interest prior to that because I was such a tomboy growing up,” she added.

The model said she has learnt that “less is more” when it comes to make-up and says she feels most beautiful when she’s not got a lot of make-up on.

“I feel quite relaxed about it now. You start to realise there are a couple of tips and tricks that can really help, but I always feel more beautiful wearing less make-up. The best thing I’ve learnt since being in the industry is that less is more. Beauty for me is a lot more about feeling my most comfortable,” Waterhouse said.

“People always ask me things like ‘What do you like wearing for a date?’ but being in clothes I can move in and not having too much on my face is more important for me. Just feeling more like my actual self,” she added.

Damu Nagar residents’ demands rehabilitation at same place

India Fire

Residents are unhappy with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who had failed to visit the tragedy spot.
The victims of Damu Nagar fire incident are unhappy with the government for its failure to provide compensation and rehabilitate them. Even though Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve had urged the government to offer compensation of Rs one lakh for the victims but they want the administration to rebuild their houses. The one lakh compensation is a paltry amount which won’t be sufficient for residents to restart their lives. Locals have complained that as of now only 250 people have received compensation and 800 families are still waiting for it. Residents have to rely on two mobile toilets for sanitation purposes. They want the government to intervene in this matter and rehabilitate them as soon as possible.

Many of them are asking that when the government is providing houses to weaker sections under the slum rehabilitation scheme why they can’t be rehabilitated under similar schemes. Residents are also unhappy with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who had failed to visit the tragedy spot. The BJP-led State government has promised to build houses for all the victims, as well as a compensation of Rs four lakh to the families of the deceased but they say that this policy may not be implemented and might just remain on paper. Two people had died and 11 were injured in the fire.

AV spoke to the victims of Damu Nagar fire incident. Here is what they had to say.

Jyoti Sunil Shinde said, “I have been residing in Damu Nagar for a long period of time. I am working as a house maid and my husband is a rickshaw driver. The government must rebuild our houses.”

Anil Namdev Kamble said, “We have been staying here since 30 to 35 years. I am employed as a garment worker. We don’t want compensation of one lakh and instead the government must construct pucca houses for us. If our demands remain unfulfilled then we will protest against the government.”

Volunteers had come forward to offer utensils, clothes, food and other basic necessities to victims. However, victims have refused to accept old clothes, utensils and cheap quality foodgrains.

Amrapali Mhanske and Pratyaksha Darshi said, “I have two daughters. When the incident occurred, I and my children were at home. When fire broke out I and my children tried to escape from the spot. We have lost our important documents in the fire incident.”

Dhondabai Gavai said, “I have been residing here since 1965. The government has not implemented any welfare scheme for us. Even though we have incurred huge losses but the government has failed to rehabilitate us.”

Laxmi Sanjay Arakh, a housewife said, “We have been born here and our children too are studying here. The government must reconstruct our house or else we might commit suicide.”

The government had handed over a cheque of Rs 3,800 to each family which would enable them to meet their expenditure for one month but victims want their houses rebuilt. Many of them held protest near the local police chowky in Kandivali as they were being upset about the paltry amount received from the government.

Vijay Landge said, “I would like to thank those volunteers who had come forward to help us. I would also like to thank local MLA Prakash Surve for helping victims. The government must rehabilitate us within two months.”

Sarjevar Janardan Shinde said, “I have been residing here since 1987. The government must construct houses for us in the same locality. We are struggling for food, clothes and other basic amenities.”

Lakhan Madhukar Katarmal said, “The government has turned a blind eye towards this issue. We are being given false assurances by the administration. The government should rebuild our homes. So far we have only received Rs 3,800 for meeting our day to day needs. The government has failed to fulfil the promises made by it.”

A resident of Damu Nagar on the condition of anonymity said that the amount is not sufficient to meet people’s needs. “Earlier, when I learnt that local authorities were distributing cheques for providing financial assistance to us, I tried to get one. But as soon as I learnt that it was all just a formality, I returned as the money is quite insufficient.”

It seems as a planned tragedy

Recently, a fire tragedy occurred in Damu Nagar slums of Kandivali. Many residents lost their life in this incidence whereas many still have burning injuries on their body. The government has announced compensation to provide relief to victims but they are yet to disburse the money. This shows administration’s apathy towards victims. Residents along with shelters have lost faith in government, which are seeing on their attitude if you visit the place. Its winter and there is no assurance from government to provide alternate accommodation to residents. Government said it will provide houses within two months to the affected slum dwellers, but where will they stay during this period? The fire lasted only 30 minutes, but has probably changed their lives forever. The fire started out of nowhere, spread quickly, and gutted almost everything that these 2000 families had. It is indeed a miracle that only two died in the fire and no major casualties occurred. The shanties were so close that a person could barely have manoeuvred through those narrow alleys. Cooking gas cylinders exploded one after another and before they knew it, they had become much poorer than they were.

There were multiple explosions, probably triggered by LPG cylinders, in the area. However, some say builders were eyeing the land and slum dwellers were not ready to negotiate with them. So, such accident was made to happen through their agents to shatter the lives of slum residents and offer them money to vacate the place. The residents of the area are suspecting builder’s hands behind the incident. The slum area was planned to be redeveloped by SD Corporation and as a result the slum dwellers are speculating the company’s hands behind it.

There are many stories behind this blast. However, at present the most important concern is rehabilitation of victims and their future. The biggest anxiety here is that, will they get back roof on their heads? The entire slum was illegal, an encroachment on the Forest department land. The government condoned it (of course with a few officials getting their share of pie), but won’t allow them to rebuild their house, let alone offer them a rehabilitation package. Residents have been handed a Rs. 3,800 cheque per family which will at best take care of a month’s basic groceries and nothing more. However, it is not the money what they want. They have lost their homes means they have lost everything.

Leaving the government and authorities aside, Damu Nagar has received more than enough relief material for the affected. However, what seems to be giving a ray of hope to these lost victims is the altruistic help received from some charity organizations. Working steady since Monday, these self-help groups have voluntarily set up tents in order to help people with food and clothing. Around 3 main charity institutions and other small voluntary self-help groups are trying to aid around 2,000 families whose homes were burned down. They have parked their tents right at the entry of Bhim Nagar and a little ahead of the Damu Nagar bus depot since three days. However, all this help cannot beat the agony of people who are waiting to get their homes back.

There were literally hundreds of volunteers running around helping people and it was great to see that humanity is still alive here. However, there is a complete lack of coordination in the distribution of the relief material. Several organisations have set up their own tents and are working relentless, but their work would mean much more if they worked together. A tehsildar level officer who will take stock of what is available and what people need and then distribute it accordingly is sorely needed. This is possible only when a senior minister or bureaucrat comes to Damu Nagar.

Prakash Surve of Shiv Sena the local MLA said, the government will provide 3 lakhs each and BJP’s Shelar said the government would provide pukka makan within two months to the slum dwellers who lost everything in the fire. Those who have lost their kin will be compensated with Rs. 4 lakh each. Five government departments are working to help the affected persons. They have been told to submit their report within a week. Meanwhile, the situation has worsened because no one wants to trust government’s hollow promises, as survivors have taken to streets to protest against the government for offering insufficient compensation amount. Stating the gesture to be a ‘salt over their wounds’, Damu Nagar residents have started a rally, shouting slogans against the BJP-led government. Protesters have also demanded to shut all shops in the area.

A tragedy in Mumbai’s slum is not new but no government has ever tried to rehabilitate these slums to avoid capsulitis. What keeps these people moving is a promise to get their homes back. However, for those in Damu Nagar who were not victims of the fire, life seems to have stopped. Such people have shut down their shops and are on ‘bandh’ till the rest get their homes back.

Bodies of artist Hema Updhayay, her lawyer Harsh Bhambani found in drain

Hema Updhayay

Panic gripped on Sunday after a double murder case came to the fore. In a shocking incident, the bodies of artist Hema Updhayay and her lawyer Harsh Bhambani were found in a drain in Kandivali on Saturday night. The bodies of artist-lawyer duo were discovered in cardboard boxes lying in a drain.

The two were reported missing since Friday. The bodies — bearing injuries, hands and feet tied, wrapped in plastic sheets and packed tight in cardboard boxes.

The bodies of Hema (43) and Bhambhani (65), their hands and feet tied with ropes, were recovered from near a drain in Kandivali last night, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a police officer involved in the probe said the bodies were in “semi-naked” condition.

“Police have not detained anybody yet and are only making inquiry. Police are quizzing those people who were in touch with Hema and her lawyer,” added Kulkarni. An earlier report attributed to police had said three persons had been detained.

Hema Updhayay’s estranged husband artist Chintan Upadhyay is being examined as a suspect against whom she had filed a harassment case — and her domestic helps. He was picked up on suspicion and for giving contradictory statements to the cops about his locations in last three days. The couple got married in 1998 and filed for divorce in 2010. Harsh Bhambani, 65, was representing her in the case.

On Saturday evening, a sweeper noticed two boxes in a drain next to a crematorium in the Dhanukar wadi area. He immediately alerted the Kandivali police station and later the bodies have been identified as those of well-known artist Hema and her lawyer Harish.

The bodies were found stuffed in cardboard boxes, and preliminary inquiry suggests that they were strangulated. The bodies were found in a decapitated state.

So far, four persons including her estranged husband have been detained for the murder.

Hema was going through bitter times. In 2013, she had filed a case of harassment against her estranged husband. Then, Bhambhani had represented her case and now sources said that her husband is being examined as a suspect in the double murder case.

Further probe revealed that Bhambhani told his family on last Friday around 6.30 pm that he is going to meet his client in Andheri and Hema had asked her servant not to cook dinner as she was planning to have dinner outside.

“It seems that the lawyer, whose car is still missing, met Hema on Friday evening. There are many leads which we are getting in the case and hopeful to solve it soon,” Police sources said.

Mumbai Police has launched a manhunt to get to the bottom of the matter. Three persons have been detained in connection with the case.

According to some reports, a domestic help of Hema had lodged a missing complaint with Santa Cruz police station yesterday after she did not return home all Friday. The family of Bhambhani had also filed a missing complaint with Antop Hill police station since he did not return home after having told them he was going to meet a client.

DCP Zone 11, Vickram Deshmane, who is probing the case, refused to confirm whether Hema’s domestic help or Bhambani’s family had registered missing complaints.

A well-known artist, Ms Upadhyay had won awards from the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy and the national Lalit Kala Academy.

She used photography and sculptural installations to explore personal identity, dislocation, nostalgia and gender.

Her works have been displayed at various international exhibitions — in China, Australia, France, Israel and Japan.

Dilip Kumar honoured with Padma Vibhushan samman

dilip kumar

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited Indian Cinema’s legendary actor Dilip Kumar at his residence Sunday afternoon to honour him with the Padma Vibhushan award.

The Home Minister took to Twitter to post a picture which shows him honouring the thespian with the prestigious title.

The announcement to honour Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and a few others with Padma Vibhushan was made by the government on the eve of Republic Day on January 25, 2015.

However, the acting legend could not attend the special function held in Rashtrapati Bhavan in April when other Padma awardees were honoured by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Dilip Kumar was born as Muhammad Yousuf Khan, the son of a Pathan fruit merchant Ghulam Sarwar, on December 11, 1922 in the Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar in present day Pakistan.

The veteran actor is known for his classics like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Madhumati’, ‘Ganga Jamuna’, ‘Azad’ and ‘Leader’, is already a recipient of Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994.

Kumar’s nuanced performances and his dedication to the craft has been an inspiration for generations of actors.

Despite a limited cinematography of 60-odd films, many of his movies make it to the classics list of Indian cinema be it tragic love story of ‘Devdas’, incarnation story of ‘Madhumati’, the sweeping historical epic ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Naya Daur’ or ‘Dil Diya Dard Liya’.
