Did Pakistan’s ISI ‘trail’ Narendra Modi in Jammu and Kashmir?

Days after Delhi Police crime branch arrested a Border Security Force head constable and a Jammu and Kashmir resident on charges of leaking sensitive information to Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence, a report on Wednesday claimed that the ISI used spies to get information about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Police have found a map of the Badami Bagh Cantonment during the raids following the arrest of ISI spies.

Notably, the spies had provided this map to their Pakistan-based handler Faizal on December 06, 2014, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Badami Bagh Cantonment in Jammu and Kashmir on December 08, 2014.

The police have, however, refrained from pointing out the motive behind sharing the map.

The website says: “There may have been an attempt to carry out an explosion near the Badami Bagh cantonment and hence the details were shared to the Pakistan handler, investigators suspect.”

On Tuesday, two Jammu and Kashmir-based Army jawans, who frequently communicated with arrested ISI operative Kafaitullah Khan, are under the scanner of the Delhi Police in the espionage case and a team is being rushed to the state to carry forward the probe.

Khan and BSF head constable Abdul Rasheed were arrested last week in connection with an espionage racket being run by Pakistan’s external spy agency ISI, which used to pay them in return for confidential information.

An official privy to the investigation said Khan’s response during his interrogation raised suspicion about the jawans having shared “secret” documents with the ISI operative.

The police have recovered a few maps pertaining to the Army from the duo’s possession. It is also suspected that one of the jawans is a relative of Khan, he said.

Meanwhile, sources said the police are yet to identify the alleged source in the Pakistani High Commission in Delhi of the ISI handler, who was directly in touch with Khan and Rasheed.

Rajiv Gandhi’s killers to stay in jail: TN government has no right to grant remission, says SC

In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the Tamil Nadu government could not grant remission and release conspirators in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The matter was decided by the constitution bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu.

The case reached the Supreme Court after the Centre objected to Jayalalithaa government’s decision to release V Sriharan alias Murugan, AG Perarivalan alias Arivu and T Suthendraraja alias Santhan after after commutation of their death sentence into life imprisonment by the apex court on the grounds of inordinate delay by the President in deciding their mercy petition.

The apex court by its February 18, 2014 order commuting their death sentence had said that 11-year delay in deciding their mercy petitions was unreasonable and de-humanizing.

The entire issue was rooted on the conflicting positions taken by the central and the Tamil Nadu governments on latter’s move to release Sriharan, Perarivalan and Suthendraraja after commutation of their death sentence.

The apex court later on stayed the release of the other convicts including Jayakumar, Nalini, Ravichandran and Robert Pious saying that there were procedural lapses on the part of the Tamil Nadu government.

Making childhood safe is becoming an overwhelming task

The public anger of the Nirbhaya crime is still lingering, while more grisly spectacles make a beeline to grab the pungent headlines, the latest being the nine-year old school girl from Mira Road was allegedly raped by three of her teachers. It is bad enough that the alleged rape occurred in the campus sanctity. Are more students being raped?  Has the definition of rape become diluted that more incidents being red-flagged? Is rape avoidance a feminine responsibility?  Or, are we failing collectively?

How is it that the girl was left alone for this to happen at any given point of time while at school? If the child has to use the rest room she must be escorted by a helper staff.  Someone knows the answer there. While the current laws and the concomitant loopholes enable abusers to escape punishment, many cases fail to result in rape law enforcement, thanks to the systemic inadequacies that render the criminal law ineffective in responding to and preventing such violence.

A less-scrutinised explanation is the campus grievance process itself oriented towards the protection of perpetrators than the vindication of survivors. While the child abuse is more than a passing issue to be bantered about by talk show hosts, the community leaders must come up with preventive strategies. It is not enough to warn a child to keep off strangers.  By now, we have told our children about “good and bad touches”, but don’t miss to caution that it is often from someone we know and trust.

The common trouble spot include under-reporting of campus crime statistics.   The educational institutions should adopt some promising practices and the campus  programme should include comprehensive education about rape myths, common circumstances under which the crime occurs, prevention strategies, rape trauma responses….. along with a sexual assault policy clarifying all forms of sexual misconduct, and provide reporting options.

As campus grievance procedures are civil in nature, the sexual offenders are found “responsible”, not “guilty”.  The strongest punishment schools can deliver is to expel a rapist from campus which can be valid for cheating on a “Physics final”, not for a felony on par with murder.  Campus judicial systems aren’t designed to address that sort of defence. A system run by corporates often puts the school’s interests above that of the victims. Probing sexual assault complaints and meting out punishment should be a police matter, handled by personnel trained to deal with such highly complex cases, as rape is beyond violation of campus discipline.

We owe it to our children to remember that the next generation of molesters is emerging from this generation.  Become aware of our own bias – our illusions that cloud our judgement by making us believe that we live in a much kindlier and gentler world than is really the case.

Few campus rapes are reported, fewer prosecuted. National Crimes Bureau Annual Report confirms that “rapes are committed in all states as well as the rapists belong to all castes, communities, colours and regions of India and abroad”, adding that “a woman is raped somewhere in India every 20 minutes , and the number of children raped has increased by 336 per cent  in the last 10 years”.

It is disturbing that our children are so trivialised as to become the objects of exploitation and their innocence is sought to be destroyed for perverted greed.  When sexual violence occurs on campus and authorities fail to adequately respond, there is a fundamental breakdown in educational mission. Men who treat women with respect can play a big role in preventing the crime. Human Rights activists who fight capital punishment should propose meaningful inputs. The children need to be protected, not labelled as tramps.

Is this a symbol of male-dominated society?

Why people continue to follow age old norms where menstruating women are denied entry in some temples asks Mumbaikars.

Shani-DevShani temple of Shingnapur, in Maharashtra holds supreme faith for many. People from all over the country visit this place to perform Puja by pouring oil on Shani Dev’s idol. In Hindu mythology, it is said that Hanumanji and Shani Dev are God following (Brahmacharya) and hence, woman are forbidden from touching their idols. Mumbaikars raised objections against temples denying entry to menstruating women. According to them, today women are at par with men in all fields and are playing a vital role in the nation’s progress then why people continue to follow age old norms where women is not allowed entry in some temples. They also wanted the government to intervene in this matter and frame legislations for removing gender based discriminations.

Madhvi-Bhuta“Few days back, a woman forcefully performed Puja and it created ruckus. It became Breaking News for TV channels, naturally because this event had taken place in temple of Hindu faith!!! Various arguments in favour of and against were put forward and debated…It got me thinking.” said Madhvi Bhuta a  volunteer of Bharatiya Janata party.

reena-jainDr Reena Jain said, “This is nothing but a symbol of a male dominated society. How can female be unclean? Are goddesses not worshiped in temple during mensuration? I think all the trusts and institutions governing religious places should be elected democratically. In this way, thoughts and ideas will not be imposed on masses. Why religion should be interpreted by only few people? Let us interpret it collectively.”

AmanAmandeep Singh, Radio Jockey said, “I don’t know why such topics are grabbing headlines these days. Is this really an important topic to be discussed in a country were about 40 per cent of its citizens are illiterates, starving, underprivileged of proper medical care and proper toilets. Why this issue is blown out of proportion by media which is not going to fix all those issues that needs to be addressed immediately. We shouldn’t fall prey to these fruitless issues and should really grow up and try to ensure that everyone in this country sleeps with his stomach filled.”

SwetaSweta Redij, an animation student said, “We are living in 21st century.  Why menstruating women are denied permission to enter temples which only violates the right to equality. This might be the reason that India is not progressing at a faster pace. Anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar are killed.

“The recent incident which occurred at Shani Shingnapur was shocking. We are confident that this kind of campaign that began in 2000 will once and for all do away with the ban on women from entering temples. The legal case is now in its final stage and we are hopeful that the High Court delivers an amicable verdict,” said Milind Deshmukh, one of Dabholkar’s close associates.

“Women have been barred from climbing the platform for hundreds of years. This act was against the rituals that have been going on for years,” said Sayaram Bankar, a temple trustee, justifying the purification ceremony.

NeelamShiv Sena MLC, Neelam Gorhe said, “When we raised the issue, our idea was that a devotee should not be discriminated on the basis of gender. Even our gods do not believe in it, then why should we? Women should also be allowed till the point men are allowed to access,”

Congress MLA from Solapur, Praniti Shinde said, “The women should be felicitated for doing what she did. I will raise this issue in the Winter session of Legislature, in Nagpur.”

“At a first glance, anything demeaning woman is to be condemned severely. Pujaris washed the temple and sanitised the surroundings because it had turned impious. How can any place or any substance or anybody turn inauspicious because it was touched by a woman? Weren’t all the Great Saints and Pujaris or even God born out of their mother’s womb and nurtured with her care? Hasn’t their mothers contributed in nurturing their souls? Our culture considers even the earth that we all thrive on, to be a mother figure. (Dharti Mata). We respect and bow to our nation as a mother figure..(Bharat Mata). Our entire, sensibility is based on Mother Nature!!” said Akshay Bhatt.

Shani is God of Men only?

The incident at the Shani Shingnapur temple is highly disgraceful. It is an act of misogynistic patriarchy continuation. A Lord Shani temple in Ahmednagar district performed a ‘purification puja’ after young woman offered worship to the idol placed on a platform from where women are traditionally barred. At a time when women are fighting for priesthood all over the world, incidence like this comes as a shocker. However, this is not entirely unexpected as a number of such incidences are becoming common over the years. Women are always being discriminated on different pretext. The feminist organizations along with progressive male organizations must take up this issue very seriously. Raja Ram Mohan Roy would be in tears to see his India in such a state after two centuries when he kickstarted social reforms. This is not just a religious issue; but a social conditioning too. Earlier this week, one Sunni religious leader claimed that women were only meant to rear children. People need a sacred text to look up to amend their archaic beliefs. Only our constitution can provide such a sacred template.

In the year 2000, Narendra Dabholkar led a campaign demanding entry for women into the Shani Shingnapur temple. The trail-blazing activism by rationalist firebrand Narendra Dabholkar, who was killed by right-wing elements, and his Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (MANS) to combat the ban on women entering temples was a vital phase in the organisation’s untiring efforts to strive for gender equality in Maharashtra. While the struggle commenced with the usual raucous noises from the right-wing patriarchy, it culminated on a happy note with these very sections joining in the cause to uphold the dignity of women across the State. In 2000, several progressive sections, including activists, socially-committed theatre and film artists and grassroots leaders led by Dabholkar, actor Shriram Lagoo and farmer leader N.D. Patil led a march from Pandharpur to Shani Shingnapur to protest against the ban which saw the participation of a large number of women activists.

However, the right-wing political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena, along with several fringe ‘Hindutva’ groups, prevented the campaigners from entering the iconic temple. After heated arguments with district official’s intent on averting trouble, the campaigners were sent into jail for the next two days. In 2011, in an obvious effort at garnering goodwill by appearing to fight for women’s equality, the BJP and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena worked for ensuring the entry of women into the legendary Mahalaxmi temple in Kolhapur district. In a single stroke, a 2,000-year-old tradition, emblematic of overweening patriarchal codes, bit the dust.

If God do not wish to be unholy by worship of a female, He (being Almighty) Himself should have prevented her. He did not do that means either He is not Almighty or He wishes to be worshipped by female. No God can ever become unholy if He is truly a God. ‘Purifying’ God is an unholy act for which all the responsible person should be punished, because God can’t be impure. Authorities at the Shani Shingnapur temple also suspended seven workers for “negligence” while one trustee resigned taking moral responsibility. Priests bathed the idol with oil and milk, while all shops in the vicinity remained closed till the ceremony was over.

The Shani Shingnapur temple attracts thousands of devotees daily. Worshippers of the famous Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi make it a point to visit the Shani Shingnapur Temple also. The practice of barring women from the inner sanctum of religious places is prevalent in some of Maharashtra’s most revered shrines, one of them is the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai. The dargah’s trust has cited menstruation as one of the reasons for not allowing women into the ‘mazaar.’ In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by activists Noorjehan Niaz and Zakia Soman of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, the trust said many religions impose restrictions on women owing to menstruation, perceived as “unclean or embarrassing”.

In the Hindu community a girl, after she reaches puberty, is barred from entering the prayer room or performing any religious prayers during her menstruation. The only reason mentioned in our scriptures is that she is (ashudha) unclean during that period. Let us go back to see when, where and why this custom started. During those days, ladies would have take their bath either in the river, pond or near the well. During the time, when the girl would be in menstruation, it would be an awkward to bathe together with the rest of the ladies, as it would probably ‘pollute’ the water. Since, the ladies did not bath and there were no bathroom facilities for the rest of the day during the menstruating period, they would naturally be termed ‘unclean’ during that time. Hence, they were being barred from the clean’ places in the house, namely the prayer room or the kitchen. This is, as far as the physical aspect of being (ashudha) unclean, goes. However, when the scriptures spoke of ‘ashudha’, they may have not only meant the physical aspect but the mental aspect as well. Science talks of the menstrual syndrome, i.e. a woman is more irritable during those days because of a hormonal imbalance. Psychics claim that there is a different aura around a menstruating woman, maybe again a chemical reaction. Segregating to pray requires a positive attitude and people tend to respond to the negative vibrations of a person standing with you; maybe that was the reason why a woman was barred from public places of prayer during these days.

Whatever might be the reason, the ladies who work hard whole month should get a complete rest during that period. However, today things have changed and women are much more capable of performing tasks during that period. Why we still stick to the conservative impositions?
