Advocate who exposed Vidarbha scam found dead under mysterious circumstances

In a mysterious death related to multi-crore Vidarbha irrigation scam, the advocate who exposed it has been found dead behind the district court building in Nagpur. Advocate Shrikant Khandalkar was found with injuries all over his body and with his face smashed.

A suicide note, written in Marathi, had been found in his pocket, police said. The case was taken over by the crime branch.

Claiming it to be a case of suicide, police said Khandalkar probably ended his life by jumping off the seven-story ‘Nyay Mandir’ – the district court building.

Nagpur Police Commissioner SP Yadav said, “We are probing all angles – whether suicide or homicide. It is for sure that his body fell from the 7th floor where his office is located. Postmortem has been conducted — and it indicates death due to injuries to his vital parts.”

The suicide note said he was suffering from a serious ailment which compelled him to take the drastic step.

Khandalkar had filed several PILs, dealing with the issues such as the irrigation scam, irregularities at Nagpur Municipal Corporation, land allotments of Nagpur Improvement Trust and development of ancient temples at Ramtek, etc.

He also had a criminal case for extortion registered against him at Sitaburdi police station a year ago. Khandalkar had been spotted by many people on the third floor of the court building on Saturday before he went missing, police said.

His wife saw a missed call from him later in the evening while she was driving. When she tried to call him back, it wasn’t answered. As he did not return till late at night, the family registered a missing complaint with the Sitaburdi police station, a police official said, adding that his mobile phone was missing.

Modi is silence on killing, for him protest means sedition: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul-GandhiCongress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government on the issue of intolerance as he addressed the Lok Sabha.

The Gandhi scion said that under the Narendra Modi government, “every protest amounts to sedition in today’s India”, accusing the government of crushing the voices of those who protest.

Targeting Union Minister VK Singh, Rahul Gandhi raked up the issue of the former Army general equating Dalit children, who were burnt alive in Sunped villager in Faridabad, with dogs.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the former Army general had “directly challenged the Constitution and fundamental Right to Equality” by calling the Dalit children dogs. He also questioned how the Prime Minister could allow him to continue in his ministry.

The Congress leader also made a reference to the Dadri lynching incident, saying “Air Force man Mohd Sartaj lost his father Mohd Akhlaq but still said ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achcha Hindustan Hamara’.”

“Mohd Sartaj’s father was killed in cold blood because he was a Muslim,” claimed Rahul Gandhi.

Hitting out at the Narendra Modi government over Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students protest, the Congress vice president said that while the government talks of skill India it crushes the voices of skilled students of the institute.

“Government talks of skill India, Modi ji tells everybody that we need to skill our people…When students in FTII with superb skills complaint about a mediocre person heading them, the government crushes their voice,” said Rahul Gandhi.

Talking about the killing of rationalist leaders Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi, the Gandhi scion said that “the Prime Minister had nothing to say about their killing”.

He further said, “Modiji talked about Gujarat model and Achche din, you may have forgotten the slogan but we cannot, but what happened in Gujarat? Gujarat model burst like a balloon with the Patidar agitation.”

Rahul also raised the issue of former NDA minister and BJP leader Arun Shourie. “Arun Shourie used to praise Modi earlier, but when he criticised him, your trollers attacked him on Twitter,” he said.

He alleged that the government does not even bother to speak to the authors and writers who returned their awards in protest against intolerance. Attacking Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for calling the protest manufactured, the Gandhi scion said, “This is not a dream like Make in India project, this is the reality…you think people like PM Bhargava and Narayana Murthy have nothing to do but to manufacture protest against you?”

Osmania beef festival becomes flashpoint between students, right-wing Hindu groups

Osmania University, the varsity which has witnessed several historic political struggles since its inception, has once again become a flashpoint of a possible bitter face-off between its students and some right-wing Hindu organisations over a beef festival scheduled for December 10.

According to reports, Democratic Cultural Forum, an umbrella organisation representing 15 student organisations of OU including two research scholar outfits, has decided to serve beef delicacies to over 5,000 participants during the ‘peddakoora panduga’ on December 10.

The move has irked the members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Party and a ‘Gau Rakshana Samiti’ and they have launched a vigorous campaign against the proposed beef festival.

The representatives of the right-wing Hindu groups had urged the authorities not to allow beef festival, warning that it would vitiate the peaceefull environment on the campus and trigger violence.

Leaders of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and other organisations met Hyderabad District Collector K Nirmala and urged her to ensure that the beef festival is not held.

Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh Lodh too led a delegation of BJP, VHP and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and submitted two memorandums to Principal Secretary Ranjeev R Acharya, who is also in-charge vice-chancellor of Osmania University.

Raja Singh said that an educational institution should be a seat of learning and no act that hurts the sentiments of a particular community should be encouraged.

In their memorandums, the Hindu outfits warned the government that they will conduct Gau (Cow) Puja and Yagna on the campus if such unacceptable events are allowed.

However, some Leftist students organisations have declared that they will hold Beef festival on Osmania University campus on December 10 to protest against the ban on slaughter of cow.

The All India Students Federation (AISF), Progressive Democrative Students Union (PDSU), Students Federation of India (SFI), Bahujan Students Federation (BSF) and other groups of students and some faculty members announced that the beef festival will be held on Human Rights Day (December 10) to uphold food right as one among the human rights.

Anna Hazare not happy with Arvind Kejriwal’s Jan Lokpal Bill?

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has asked the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi’s AAP government for a broader selection committee by including two more persons in it.

The suggestion came following a meeting between Hazare and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas.

The maximum criticism on the Bill from Anna Hazare came for the change in appointment and removal process of Jan Lokpal. Reportedly, Anna Hazare has suggested that there should be an inquiry by a High Court judge for removal of Jan Lokpal.

The Delhi government has said that it is open to suggestions by Anna Hazare on the Jan Lokpal Bill.

No evidence to prove Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple: Mahesh Sharma

Amid several theories and claims about the ‘Taj Mahal’, the 17th century Mughal monument, the Centre has now said that there is no solid evidence to prove that the historical ‘monument of love’ was a Hindu temple.

While replying to a query about the evidence claiming that the Taj Mahal built in Agra by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was originally a temple, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma told MPs in Lok Sabha that the government has not found any evidence in this regard.

Sharma’s reply came few days after a lawsuit, claiming the Taj Mahal was originally a Shiva temple, was filed by a group of lawyers from Agra.

They also demanded that its ownership be transferred to Hindus and Muslims be restricted from offering prayers at the location.

The Archaeological Survey of India had earlier dismissed the claims that the 17th century Mughal monument is a Shiva temple.

Sharma said government is aware of the suit and that it has not observed any affect on tourism because of the controversy.

Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife of three, Mumtaz Mahal.

Today, the Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and is widely recognized as the jewel of Muslim art in India.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the Taj Mahal attracts some 3 million visitors a year.

Opposition should not disrupt parliament

Parliament is a place where elected legislators of the Government function to pass legislations and pave way for good governance and take the nation forward. A strong opposition party is a must to counter the ruling party and issues of paramount importance could be discussed at length removing the anomalies and lacunae if any, and thereby arrive at a consensus for the bills to be passed. This healthy practice should be followed by the involvement of all concerned parliamentarians. This system worked wonderfully well from the grass root level and people enjoyed the measures taken in a big way for more than six decades.

All of a sudden we face and hear a term named intolerance and that in turn spoil the political atmosphere and democracy.  Freedom of speech is questioned and we come across a situation in which we see that it has become more or less a fish market and the main aim is to disrupt throughout a session in the functioning of parliament. Opposition will not allow the parliament to function because if the government governs well and the people are happy with them they will again come to power.

Paralysing the parliament in motion will only delay the things and we all know what it costs to the exchequer and to the tax paying public. The agenda for discussion in Parliament should be communicated well in advance to all concerned, so that they can go prepared to make their respective useful contributions by way of healthy and fruitful discussions. Past dignitaries of importance could always be extended and invited without fail so as to get their inputs in matters of significance. This will, in turn, give them a sense of pride too.

People of essence are the ones who take our country through the right path and they may perish, but will leave long-lasting memories for others to cherish and follow the constitutional rights in the best way possible without paralysing the parliament. The Ruling Party and the Opposition Party should act together and discuss all issues of National interest and consider a path of progress and putting our country in the forefront in a positive way and arrive at a conclusion and find amicable solution to all problems of concern. The spirit of “WE” together can achieve a lot should be followed, rather than the “I” alone definition. As people of this patriotic country we look for peaceful existence and pray for fruitful parliamentary sessions and prevent house paralysis.

While the episode, in which the raven-haired stunner flew to Paris just to gorge on mouth-watering cheesecake, and chowed down on sugar sweet treats in New Orleans, was on air Kim tweeted: “Of course I had to fly to Paris for fashion and fooooood (sic)”

But one Twitter troll replied: “all you think about is food fat b**ch (sic).”

Earlier this month, Kim revealed she went to Paris purely for the cheesecake at Hotel Costes – but was devastated to find the hotel had run out of her favourite dessert when she arrived.

She said: “I flew in, maybe like a couple months ago, just to have a last hurrah of all the food I’m not going to be able to have for a while. And I get there and they tell me they didn’t have it!”
