Number of passports issued in 2014 swells to 98 lac

The number of passports issued across the country witnessed a surge of 41 per cent in 2014, after registering a slump in 2012-13.

Jagpal Singh, CPIO of the Ministry of External Affairs, in reply to an RTI query filed by activist Manoranjan Roy, said that during the calendar year 2012, a total number of 73,89,558 passports were issued. This dropped by 22 per cent in subsequent year in 2013 and settled at 58,17,515.

However, in 2014, the number of passport issued across the country rose significantly by over 41 per cent and went up to 98,80,000.

Interestingly, the issuance of Diplomatic and Official passports saw a reverse trend in the last three years.

In these categories, in 2012, a total 24,311 diplomatic (in red colour) and official (in grey colour) passports were issued. This saw a marginal increase of 3 per cent next year and touched a figure of 25,130. However, in 2014, the numbers saw a decline by 20 per cent and dipped to 20,208 passports.

The RTI query also found that the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Mumbai has witnessed a rise in issuance of passports in the last three years.

In 2012, a total of 1.50 lakh diplomatic, official, ordinary jumbo and ordinary normal passports were issued by Mumbai Regional Passport office. This figure went up to 3.35 lakh in 2013 and again scaled up to 3.69 lakh in 2014.

Reacting to the trend, activist Roy said the increasing numbers may be due to two main reasons. First, improvement in financial status of people across the country due to which they are coming closer to the world, and secondly because the issuance process has become seamless and transparent.

Confirming the same, a senior passport officer said, “Our regional officer has been processing almost 3,000 passport applications per day and setting up three Passport Suvidha Kendras (PSK) has also helped us a lot. This is why our region has fixed up a target of issuing four lakh passports in this calendar year.

Nitish Kumar sworn in as Bihar CM; Lalu’s sons Tejaswi, Tej Pratap also take oath

Nitish-KumarJanata Dal United leader Nitish Kumar on Friday took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the fifth time. Kumar, who was chosen as the Mahagathbandhan legislative party leader, took oath as the CM at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

Following Nitish’s swearing in at the event, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad’s sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav also took oath as ministers in the new Bihar government.

Tej Pratap Yadav, who was elected from the Mahua Assembly seat, fumbled while taking oath. The elder son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad could not pronounce the word apekshit (expectations) correctly and instead he said upekshit (neglected) following which Governor Ramnath Kovind asked the Mahua MLA to repeat his oath. Hazari, a cousin of Ram Vilas Paswan had defeated the LJP chief’s nephew Prince Raj from Kalyanpur assembly seat. In Lok Sabha elections earlier, he had defeated Paswan’s brother Ram Chandra Paswan.

From RJD quota besides Lalu’s sons, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Abdul Gafoor, Vijay Prakash, Chandrika Rai, Alok Kumar Mehta, Ram Vichar Rai, Sheo Chander Ram, Muneshwar Chaudhary, Chandrashekhjar and Anita Devi took oath.

Anita, the lone woman minister from RJD defeated senior BJP leader Rameshwar Chourasia in Nokha assembly segment.

RJD had won 80 seats in the Bihar poll followed by JDU 71 and Congress 27 totalling 178 in the 243-member Legislative Assembly.

‘Don’t raise issue for publicity?’ Azam Khan asks rape survivor

Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan has told a woman who was allegedly raped, not to try and find “popularity in such a thing of infamy and shame”.

Mr Khan made the comment during an event on Thursday in Kanpur where the woman had come to urge the urban development minister to hasten police investigation.

At the event, when the woman, allegedly raped in a moving car four months ago tried to raise the matter, Azam Khan snapped back saying: “Agar aap badnami ko itni shohrat dengi, toh zamane ko apni shakl kaise dikhayengi? (If you rake up such a shameful matter, how will you have a face to live in the society?).”

As the woman carried on saying that the culprits were roaming free and she was receiving death threats, the minister said he did not actually know what the matter was.

Azam Khan went on to say he would take the memorandum from the “behan jo halla kar rahi hain” (the sister who is creating such a ruccus), and added that she had, however, “got her two minutes of fame by raking up the issue.”

The crowd began whistling and clapping at the minister’s statement, forcing the woman to beat a hasty retreat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at the minister for his remarks and demanded that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav “either by his silence endorse his minister’s statements or sack him”.

“Azam Khan throughout his political career has hit headlines for all the wrong reasons. It is high time that the Samajwadi Party leadership take a call on him and clamp down on his irresponsible statements,” BJP’s state spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.

Cop suspended after seen in pictures sitting on woman Officer’s lap

Pictures of a white-bearded policeman purportedly sitting on the lap of a woman Special Police Officer (SPO) in a police station in Rajouri district has gone viral on social media, prompting authorities to suspend him.

Two pictures were posted in Facebook and WhatsApp in which Head Constable Zakir Hussain was seen sitting on the lap of a woman SPO who was seated on a chair in Budhal in Police Station.

“The incident took place in August this year. Soon after the pictures came to our notice, we have suspended the Head Constable namely Zakir Hussain posted at Police Station Budhal and attached him to the District Police Lines for this shameful act,” said AK Atri, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Rajouri-Poonch Range.

A probe has been ordered and action has been initiated against the woman SPO and others of the department involved in the act, he said.

There is zero-tolerance to such shameful acts in police, the DIG said.

Shatrughan Sinha rubs salt into BJP’s Bihar debacle wounds, calls Rahul Gandhi ‘rising star’

A day after Rahul Gandhi’s high-voltage charge against PM Modi, disgruntled BJPMP Shatrughan Sinha fired another salvo, hailing the Congress vice president as a “rising star”

The actor-turned-politician praised the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance’s big win in the state polls in a series of tweets, congratulating it hours before the oath-taking ceremony.

“It has been the victory of democracy. I wish the new government led by Nitish babu, Laluji and rising star Rahul Gandhi great success,” the Patna Sahib MP tweeted on Thursday night.

Sinha’s meeting with Nitish Kumar after the poll results were declared raised many eyebrows within the party, who saw it as an open act of defiance.

“I welcome Nitish “Susashan” Babu, messiah of development as CM of Bihar & congratulate Laluji, leader of masses for massive victory in Bihar,” said another tweet by Sinha, who added that “despite his best intention”, he will not be able to attend the swearing-in ceremony at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on Friday.

Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Rajiv Pratap Rudy are expected to represent the BJP at Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in. Sinha mentioned the two in another tweet. “Appreciate Centre’s gesture of deputing my friend Venkaiah Naidu and few other small leaders to attend swearing-in ceremony of Nitish Babu,” he said in another tweet.

On Wednesday, Sinha had dared the BJP to act against him and RK Singh, the BJP MP from Arrah. “RK Singh, former Home Secretary and a proud Bihari ‘sher’ is right. No one has the guts or the DNA to give us a ‘phatkaar’ (reprimand),” he had tweeted.

Singh had accused the BJP of selling tickets and giving them to criminals in the Bihar elections, calling it the main reasons of the party’s debacle.

Sinha had claimed the Bihar poll results could have been different for his party had he been projected as the chief ministerial candidate.

“I am not bragging, but I do feel that when the darling (laadla) of Bihar people, the dhartiputra (son of the soil) and the original ‘Bihari babu’ was deliberately sidelined, it definitely had an impact on my supporters and fans. I can’t say how much difference it could have been, but I can definitely say, some difference would have been there. We could have definitely got more seats than what we got,” he told a news channel.

Victoria’s Secret model Bridget Malcolm slams skinny shamers!

VictoriaVictoria’s Secret model Bridget Malcolm has come under fire on Instagram for her skinny frame, but she’s not taking the criticisms lightly!

The 23-year-old Australian supermodel took to the social media site to slam all her haters.

In regards to the comments that she doesn’t look “healthy” and is “too skinny”, Bridget posted a picture of her fit figure (above), and wrote:

“Can we STOP with the skinny shaming please? I am extremely fit and healthy and am not in the slightest way anorexic. I have worked hard to look like this and am proud of my body. I may not be the curviest but I am a woman who has every right to look the way I do. Maybe today take a look inside yourself and wonder why you feel the need to shame strangers over the Internet about their bodies. Peace and love to you all – let’s change the conversation”

Body shaming of any kind is wrong!

At least Bridget is taking a stand against haters though, and hopefully the message will help them realize her point of view.

Mani Shankar Aiyar and Salman Khurshid are traitors

I feel ashamed to take the names of the traitors of India? But then mention must be made of them viz. Mani Shankar Aiyar and Salman Khurshid. By now the whole nation might be aware about their treacherous acts and dastardly statements being made during their visit to Pakistan and their volatile and shocking statements, against India and its Prime Minister Narendra Modi being beamed very widely. What did Aiyar mean by saying that Pakistan must help in removing Modi from the Prime Ministership? What did he mean by saying that only if Modi is removed, will peace talk prevail between both nations? Let me ask some questions. Did he mean to say Pakistan should continue to create trouble in Jammu and Kashmir? Did he mean to say Pakistan army and terrorists should target our border forces, soldiers and army officers? Did he mean to say Pakistan should seek “support” from other terror organisations to target India –albeit PM of India? What did he try to suggest to Pakistan? Remove the PM of India means? Did he mean target him?

Did Aiyar not openly indulge in anti-national and treason acts? Should he not be charged for conspiracy with the terror sponsoring nation and asking “that” nation to defeat our PM? Despite being a member of the Congress party for several decades what steps have Aiyar taken to improve bilateral ties with Pakistan? Every year the Congress led government just had talks with Pakistan- only to decide on when and where the next -peace-talks should be held! And allowed those PMs, Presidents and officials to visit Agra, to pose in front of the Taj Mahal and gave them a ceremonial send off —only to see terrorism and ceasefire violations being waged against us, repeatedly!

Inside India….you have all the freedom to speak whatever you want and spew venom on our PM too! But going to Pakistan and targeting our PM in front of their ex-President and on their television channel is unjustified.

At least Aiyar and Khurshid must be charged and put behind bars. Let them come face to face with Modi and his government in India and make all sorts of statements. Why visit an enemy nation and make controversial statements against your own country’s prime minister and government and appease them?

We have enough of betrayers like Aiyar and Khurshid in our own country.  Will the Congress High command, in the interest of the nation take strict action against such traitors? By the way where are those “Award wapasi gang intellectuals”? Don’t they find these statements anti-national? Why are they not coming forward to condemn the statement issued by Aiyar? It’s high time both the houses of Parliament took up this matter up in the ensuing winter session and reprimand Aiyar even if the proceedings of the house get disrupted.
