Be it appearing in cola brands or promoting junk food, celebrities have considerable sway when consumer behaviour matters. While it is mutually beneficial to both the business and the celebrities, can celebrities circumvent responsibility, if the product endorsed is found unsafe after tests? Should celebrities be rapped on the knuckles for misleading claims? There is much evidence that consumers buy products whose virtues are touted by celebrities. For as long we can recall, celebrity endorsements have been a staple of the marketing landscape and have served as powerful tools, seeking to reach consumers and persuade them that their products are ones they too ought to own. Businesses have long sought to lure the attention of potential customers that live in a world of ever-increasing commercial bombardment.
Using celebrities increases consumer awareness of the ad and make it more striking, as their image and values get transferred directly to the product, often adding instant credibility that the company would have otherwise been pressed to build their own. If the product can sell on its own merits, why need endorsements? These ads often work at a subconscious level, drawing you into the product without you really thinking about why you are drawn in.
There is a face behind every product we buy, a community impacted by the way that product is created. Michael Jordan (MJ), the greatest endorser, is a great basketball player, but does that really also make him an expert on batteries, hamburger, soft drinks… and other products he endorsed? Does he really use them?
Children see their hero accomplish extraordinary athletic feats on the basket ball court. Nonetheless, they see you seconding products that are jettisoned as unhealthy by their parents and doctors. How can fizzy drinks and junk foods be unhealthy if MJ, the pinnacle of sports, is telling me to buy them? Cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s episode with cancer can make his fans wonder – was this due to soft drinks? You like it or not, kids look up to you. Failure to mend, a health time bomb could explode. We condemn the corporates that pollute our natural resources, yet we glamorise the very people that endorse the product they sell. Junk food endorsement and the industry need to be forced by legislation to clean up its act.
The biggies must be quizzed for patronising the hypocritical strategy. Say, alcohol ad in the guise of aerated/mineral water. If the food/beauty supplement does not fulfill its promise of making you “taller” or “fairer”, all stakeholders are culpable, including the actors/channels. A mandatory disclosure on every ad by the endorser must confirm: “I have used/not used this product/service personally”, distinguishing an advertisement from an endorsement. Can s/he put it on an affidavit? An endorsement must reflect the honest opinion of the endorser and can’t be used to make a claim that the product’s market couldn’t legally make. Law and logic aside, a little ethics…. And why not?
They are known to be one of the most compatible real-life couples but actress Angelina Jolie says that she and husband Brad Pitt “have (their) issues,” reported Female First.
Angelina, however, added that they are nothing like the unhappy couple they play in their upcoming film By the Sea.
The 40-year-old actress has six children, Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, nine, and seven-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, with Brad, 51.
“Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems, we couldn’t have made the film. This is the only film I’ve done that is completely based on my own crazy mind. As artists we wanted something that took us out of our comfort zones. Just being raw actors. It’s not the safest idea. But life is short,” she said.
Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star in Ryan Murphy’s next project centred around one-off hitmakers from the 1990s.
The pair had previously set the idea up as a film project for Sony, but Murphy now plans to pitch to cable networks later this year.
The anthology series would see Paltrow star in the first season before new cast members join future runs, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Murphy said that “One Hit Wonder” would see Paltrow as a broke singer who had a hit 15 years previously. At her lowest ebb she is contacted by a record label looking to form a supergroup with three other singers from her era who are equally hard on their luck.
“I love this idea that there is a second act,” “Glee” creator Murphy said, adding that the show would feature original music and would focus on female empowerment.
Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Diaz were previously linked to star alongside Paltrow in the movie version before it was cancelled.
Paltrow has shown off her musical prowess before, most notably in the 2010 movie Country Strong alongside Tim McGraw. She also starred in a number of episodes of “Glee” as substitute teacher Holly Holliday.

Deepika Padukone has stepped into period drama genre with “Bajirao Mastani”, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical love saga is turning out to be an arduous task for the actress. She says the film is “physically, mentally and emotionally draining”.
“The film is definitely the toughest of my career. The film has been extremely draining, be it physically, mentally or emotionally. The nature of the movie and the director is very demanding,” Deepika said at the film’s song launch here.
The track titled “Deewani Mastani” was launched at Day One of Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2015 here on Saturday.
The actress has teamed up with Bhansali for the second time — “Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela” was the first.
“Bajirao Mastani” narrates the love story of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I (played by Ranveer Singh) and his second wife Mastani (Deepika). Actress Priyanka Chopra plays Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai. The film is scheduled to release on December 18.
For Deepika, the push by the director helps an actor push the envelope and get better in the craft.
“He (Bhansali) is never happy with what he sees. He is very clear about what he wants from his actors and team. So, he pushes you and helps you discover something within yourself that you didn’t know existed,” the actress said.
“He is a hard task master. You learn so much about yourself. It has been the most difficult experience, but in the end you feel it is worth it,” she added.
After making a name for herself in the world of modelling, Deepika entered Bollywood with “Om Shanti Om” in 2007, and went on to take Hindi filmdom with a storm.
She has been appreciated by one and all for experimenting with different storylines like “Piku”, “Aarakshan” and “Finding Fanny”. Her line-up of upcoming movies is also quite impressive like “Tamasha” apart from “Bajirao Mastani”.
Nawab Malik seeks resignation of Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar for his comments on beef.
Opposition parties NCP and Samajwadi Party came down heavily against Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s comments on beef. According to them, Khattar is indulging in divisive politics and targeting the minority community. They said that Khattar has no right to continue as the Chief Minister of the state. In an interview published with a reputed English daily Khattar had said that Muslim community can live in India but must give up eating beef as it doesn’t violate their faith but that the cow is an ‘article of faith’ for Hindus. The NCP has appealed to President Pranab Mukherjee to intervene in the matter and ensure his ouster.
“Hindustan does not belong to Khattar alone. The way it belongs to him, it belongs to every Muslim of the country. With these comments, he has broken the oath taken by him before taking over as the Chief Minister in which he said that he will treat everybody equal,” said NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik.
It seems that the CM was speaking the language of a Sangh Pracharak, he added.
Malik alleged that during Khattar’s tenure, attacks on churches in the state and atrocities on the minority community have escalated.
“Riots are happening in Muslim villages, churches are being attacked and atrocities on Dalits are increasing. The situation is such that Dalits now want to convert to escape these atrocities. Khattar should immediately resign from the CM’s post. If that doesn’t happen then Prime Minister Narendra Modi should ask him to resign,” he said.
“We appeal to the President to intervene in this matter as life of minorities and Dalits is horrible in Haryana which is dangerous for the country,” Malik said.
The BJP distanced itself from the comments made by Khattar and said that the comments made by him are his own and the party doesn’t endorse it.
“The views expressed by Khattar are not that of the party. I will talk to him and will advise him. It is wrong to say like that,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said.
“This is not the BJP’s position…. It is not correct to link eating habits to religion. People have to keep in mind the sentiments of others and eating is a personal choice of people,” he said.
Naidu said no civilized person will support the killing of anyone for his eating habits and termed the Dadri incident as “highly condemnable”. The Prime Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah have also expressed their disapproval of the incident.
He alleged that there was a “systematic and malicious campaign” to derail government’s and Prime Minister’s focus on development and growth of the country.
“There is a systematic and malicious campaign against the BJP-led government to divert its focus from development and to derail Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts of making India develop and progress further,” he said.
Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Azam Khan targeted BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre saying that Muslims ‘are not the citizens of democratic India but the victims of saffron India’.
Commenting on Khattar’s statement, Khan said, “Clearly this is not a nation that is governed by the Constitution. These comments are always created for targeting the Muslims.”
Recently, Supreme Court had said that the Aadhaar Card may be used to avail government schemes including employment guarantee, pension and bank accounts. Earlier, as per the court’s order, the card could have been used only voluntarily for availing subsidies under the public distribution system and purchasing kerosene and cooking gas. This ruling is seen as a relief to the government which has been trying to persuade the Supreme Court to extend Aadhaar’s uses after a slew of blows to the unique identity or UID programme following privacy petitions. After this order, the Aadhaar card can be used for availing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Jan-Dhan Yojana, provident funds and pension schemes. The Supreme Court told the petitioners challenging the government that if the card can be used for some government schemes voluntarily, there was no reason to prevent it in others. The ruling however does not agree to all of the government’s pleas. The Centre, Reserve Bank of India, stock market watchdog SEBI, telecom regulator TRAI, and a number of states had moved the Supreme Court for extending the voluntary use of Aadhaar Card to a number of other services.
The government’s ambitious UID scheme has been challenged in court over privacy concerns since it uses biometric data like fingerprint and iris scans. The court has already referred a related debate over whether privacy is a fundamental right to a constitution bench. After today’s ruling the Court will also deliberate the legal validity of the Aadhaar Card.
The UID/Aadhaar was the biggest scam where few lakh crores of taxpayers’ money was looted by the authorities involved. Everything that government touches stink with corruption. The much touted RTI Act also is a tragedy and every information commissioner should be investigated for corruption/assets disproportionate to known sources of income because it is commonsensical to suspect bribe when the public information officers are not penalised as per the law and let off scot free even when information required to be provided is denied. Certainly, the Government planned a way of looting the exchequer unimpeded. They always find the ways to diminish the treasury.
No government is for the service of the down trodden. In the last sixty years, poverty is well maintained to enable more loot. The earnings of the government have been steadily raising but poverty is pegged at a comfortable level to enable more loot. Even if country organized free food for all, and not allowing food grains to rot in the godowns then also you will hear the large scale of deaths due to starvation, because of corruption. MGNREGA would have flourished if it was planned well in advance with elaborate specific schemes, not for digging holes. Five years ago, an abrupt decision was taken on the eve of election year, the loot will continue forever unhindered, unquestioned. This country will be economically backward, technically inept for time to come.
Around 36,000 crores could have been utilized to renovate Indian Railways. New lines could have been laid down, new long distance trains with only general compartments could have been brought up to reduce rush and bring relief to public, meter gauge lines could have been converted to broad gauge lines along the critical boarders of west and north east. However, this public money has been utilized in useless NREGA which is nothing else but channel to distribute free money for the sake of political benefit. 836 million people in India are living on less than Rs. 20 a day.
In this regard, bio-metric ATM introduced by Andhra Government is useful. Time has come when resilience must be abandoned and all necessary steps be taken in order to take holistic advantage of Aadhaar and confirmation of hassle free environment. Internet connectivity problem can be overcome by moving to 3G or 4G enabled mobile systems. By and large, MNREGA is a failed exercise and has already wasted over Rs. two lakh crores. The development scholars and government should realize this and instead facilitate direct cash transfers to Aadhaar enabled beneficiaries in exchange for education, skills development or community sanitation objectives that can bring about long-term structural changes in country side. At the very least, MNREGA should prioritise sanitation, education, health, roads, and other rural development or asset creation even if it involves use of machinery and skilled workers. The whole idea of using UID is to see that the payment reaches the appropriate person without the involvement of middlemen.
The survey would confirm some of these misgivings. The average number of days worked in MNREGA per person was 25, 22 and 38 in AP, MP and Rajasthan, respectively, and seemed a reflection of low unemployment rates of 7%, 8% and 4% for these states. This might mean a high degree of employment of farm and other forms of labour. The share of MNREGA work in total man days worked was 4% in Rajasthan, AP (3%) and MP (1%). About 2% of MNREGA workers in AP reported availability of other work, while this was 10% of Rajasthan and negligible for MP. It was also found that 25%, 17% and 36% households in AP, MP and Rajasthan, respectively, participated in MNREGA works. The monthly per capita expenditure for households who used the scheme was Rs. 918, Rs. 654 and Rs. 930 for these states, respectively. For AP, MP and Rajasthan, the households that benefitted from MNREGA stood at 84%, 78% and 62%, respectively, and they were from “agricultural labour” or “self-employed in agriculture”. There is, on the positive side, high awareness on all the three states about the rural guarantee, a finding that will please a government keen to brand itself as “pro-poor”.
Whatsoever the scams and controversies, Aadhaar Card has played a vital role in securing person’s personal identity, time and again. The recent verdict indirectly gave nod to the voluntary usage of Aadhaar and directly gave loud and clear message that it is one of the vital documents too.
A Pakistani family which arrived here to visit the Haji Ali ‘dargah’ to pray for their mentally-challenged son was refused accommodation by several hotels in the city following which they spent the night on a pavement.
A sub-inspector of Railway Police Force (RPF) provided some succour to the family of around five members after they reached the Mumbai Central Railway Station on Wednesday but the family failed to find accommodation in any hotel or lodge, its senior inspector RK Arya said.
On October 4, the Pakistani family had arrived in India on a 40-day visa.
On Wednesday, they reached Mumbai Central Railway Station by Suryanagri Express from Jodhpur. Their ordeal began soon as they were refused accommodation by several lodges and hotels which they approached in South Mumbai.
“The only reason for refusal by lodges and hotels was that they (hotels) didn’t want to complete the formality of filling ‘Form-C’, which is to be submitted to a government department if people from outside the country come to the city on visa and stay in their lodges and hotels,” said RPF sub-inspector Mahesh Chauhan, who helped the family in their time of distress.
“They also said that the owners of the lodges and hotels told them that they were very small establishments and have no manpower to do the extra work of filling and submitting the Form-C,” he said.
After checking and verifying the family’s documents, Chauhan took them to a cabin at Mumbai Central Police Station, located just outside the railway station, and told them to rest for sometime, besides offering them tea and snacks, Arya said.
The family stayed near the police cabin till around 1-1.30 am yesterday, Chauhan said.
They spent rest of the time sitting on a pavement outside the railway station before heading back to Jodhpur.
Due to their experience in the city, the family cut short its trip and left yesterday.
The family members told Chauhan that they had arrived in the city to visit the Haji Ali dargah to pray for their 12-year-old son who was mentally challenged.
They visited the dargah yesterday and later left for Jodhpur via Loksatti Express (from Bandra Terminus) by cancelling their earlier return tickets for October 18, the sub-inspector said.
The wait for the bowl of your favourite instant noodles will be over soon as all Maggi samples cleared test by three laboratories conducted as per Bombay High Court order.
“We have received test results from all three laboratories mandated by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court to test Maggi Noodles samples. All the 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits,” Nestle India said in a statement.
Nestle India, that used to produce nine variants of Maggi noodles, on Friday said that the company is committed to re-introduce the instant noodles at the earliest in the country.
“In compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court, we will now commence manufacture and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories,” the company added.
We will continue to collaborate with FSSAI, said Nestle India.
The company also said that it intends to restart Maggi sales after newly manufactured products are cleared by the labs. Stressing that Maggi noodles are safe, Nestle India said it has “conducted over 3,500 tests representing over 200 million packs in both national as well as international accredited laboratories and all reports are clear”.
Nestle India’s shares surged 7 percent as three lab tests cleared Maggi samples.
It may be recalled that Nestle had to withdraw its instant noodles brand Maggi from the market over allegations of high lead content and presence of MSG (monosodium glutamate).
In June, food safety regulator FSSAI had banned Maggi noodles after it found excess level of lead in samples, terming it as “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption.
The Bombay High Court directed the Centre and Maharashtra government to file their affidavits in reply to a PIL seeking action against self-styled Godwoman Sukhwinder Kaur alias Radhe Maa for carrying a trident in her hands while travelling in a flight.
The PIL, filed by social worker, Ramesh Joshi claimed that Radhe Maa had flouted civil aviation rules by carrying trident in her hands while boarding a flight by a private airlines from Aurangabad to Mumbai on August 9.
A division bench of justices V M Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi asked Joshi to include Radhe Maa as a party respondent to the petition and serve a copy of the PIL to her.
The court directed the Centre and state government and Radhe Maa to file their affidavits by November 18.
The petition alleged that the police authorities and the Maharashtra Home Ministry had failed to register FIR against the Godwoman despite complaints filed before them.
Carrying of trident (which can also be used as a weapon) in a flight is prohibited under the civil aviation rules and allowing a person to carry this instrument on an aircraft amounts to an offence, said the PIL.
