Development of seafaring

Seafaring is a good and clean profession. Work hard and then enjoy. No politics, good hygienic food, comfortable living conditions and good wages. There is a good system in place where you can send almost 80 per cent of your wages to your bank through allotment. There are good social security schemes as well, implemented well by all companies. Indian seafarers should work longer at sea while they are young to learn the work.

In our Marine colleges, we still do not give more importance to skill training. The cadets of some financially well to do colleges should be sent  for skill enhancement training being conducted by other organizations such as IDEMI at Sion (E) and Don Bosco at Kurla. There is lot of automation on ships now and, therefore, the colleges must expose their students for relevant training, not the students alone, but the faculty also. It is wrongly assumed that the student who goes to a marine college passes out after receiving good training. The assumption is wrong because most of the faculty and the Principals themselves do not upgrade their knowledge and teach philosophy and psychology and waste time.  No one is bothering about this aspect.

On board training involving equipment manufacturers or repairers will show results.

Such trainers can sail with the ship from port A to port B and carry out training and Audit. Then, at some selected ports, where experts may be readily available, the trainer comes on board and imparts on the job training to few officers who may be off duty. Subsequently, these officers can impart training to others. Companies should pay for such training (instead of not so realistic training ashore) and keep track if the relay training is being carried out or not. For example, a second officer and Master receives training in one port, they must then become trainer for other officers. Here, the intention is not to criticize any one or belittle any existing system, the aim is to improve upon and make the training as realistic (on the job) as it can be.

Don’t regret turning down ‘Lord of the Rings’: Nicolas Cage

Nicolas-cageHollywood star Nicolas Cage says he does not regret saying no to the role of Aragorn in “Lord of the Rings” and Neo in “The Matrix”.

The 51-year-old “Leaving Las Vegas” actor admits that the characters would have contributed a lot in shaping up his career, reported Entertainment Weekly.

“There were different things going on in my life at the time that precluded me from being able to travel and be away from home for three years.

“I don’t really have any regrets. I think regret is a waste of time. I try to always move forward as opposed to dwelling on the past or the movies that might have happened,” he said, when asked about turning down the “Lord of the Rings” offer.

The Oscar-winning actor, has a positive point of view over his decision to turn down the role and enjoys watching these films.

“But the thing is about those movies, I can watch them. I can enjoy them as an audience member. I don’t really watch my own movies. And so I genuinely do have the joy of watching these – especially with ‘Lord of the Rings’.”

Suicide attempt or sabotage?

It is yet not clear if Indrani had attempted suicide or whether there was any negligence or foulplay.

IndraniIndrani Mukherjea who was in critical condition for more than 48 hours regained consciousness. According to hospital authorities Indrani is out of danger. However, it is yet not clear whether Indrani had attempted suicide or whether there was any negligence or foulplay. Indrani was rushed to JJ hospital from Byculla jail on Friday afternoon in an unconscious condition after she allegedly overdosed on anti-depressant pills. Earlier, contradictory reports had emerged about her condition with the Hinduja hospital confirming she’d had an overdose of anti-anxiety tablets and the government-run forensic science Lab in Kalina saying there was no evidence of overdose.

“Indrani is conscious. She is responding to our commands. Her condition is good. But she will remain under observation for next 24 to 48 hours before we consult a psychiatrist and seek opinion on discharging her,” Dr T P Lahane, Dean of state-run J J Hospital said.

“She is still drowsy but we have been giving her some fluids including water. Indrani is completely out of danger now,” Lahane said.

Meanwhile, principal home secretary (Prisons) Vijay Satbir Singh said the probe is looking into all aspects including whether the medicines or any other toxic substance she consumed were prescribed by the doctors and if there was an overdose, how did that happen. The JJ Hospital report said no drug trace was found in the gastric test conducted there after Indrani was admitted in an unconscious state.

To a query on the conflicting forensic findings on her suspected drug overdose, Lahane said, “The forensic test is authentic and reliable and we have accepted the findings of the report.”

Dr Lahane had said a report on Indrani’s urine samples from Hinduja Hospital laboratory confirmed that level of benzodiazepine–an anti depressant–was found raised.

Asked if any report has emerged that she had attempted suicide in the prison on Friday where she was lodged under judicial remand, Lahane said “we cannot say anything about that for now.”

Officials said Indrani was reportedly prescribed to take two pills for epileptic problems, one in morning and one in evening, under the supervision of the jail authorities.

Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “The investigations were moving at a fast pace under the leadership of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. However, suddenly he was being promoted and the investigations were handed over to CBI. Is some trying to kill Indrani to shield some accused? If such things can happen to Indrani then there might be a threat to Sameer Gaekwad’s life too.”

Indrani’s daughter Sheena, 24, was allegedly kidnapped from outside National College in Bandra and strangled to death in a car by Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai.

Why Nepal is irked with India?

Since BJP has come to power, things had gone beyond control. The agenda of Hindu Rashtra and the thrust for painting everything saffron somewhere has vindicated the neighbours also. Perhaps this is the reason, Nepal is trying to remain secular by refuting all claims of fanatic India. There have been many anti-India protests in Nepal as they feel that India has been retaliating against their government after the re-promulgation of its new Constitution, over which India has been clearly irked as it feels the statute was discriminatory to ethnic Indian community, Madhesi, living in Nepal’s border districts. These areas also witnessed violent protests by the Madhesis during the drafting of the Nepal Constitution.

Barring a few aberrations, the new Nepal Constitution is a progressive document, particularly in south Asia. It abolished capital punishment and became the first Asian country to protect the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The electoral system gives a second chance to all those who fail in the first attempt. A Madhesi president Ram Baran Yadav announced the promulgation of the Constitution. Over 80 per cent of the parliamentarians voted in favour of the Constitution, only 12 per cent boycotted and a mere four per cent voted against it . Of the 67 Madhesi MPs, 40 approved the Constitution. Of the 29 Tharu (tribal) MPs, 16 said yes. What consensus are the Indian government and a large section of the media seeking? Do we want the Nepalese to wait another ten years to establish a secular progressive republic? Our Indian news channels showed the protest and mourners and never showed the celebration of the new Constitution which happened across the country.

Since a significant number of people affiliated to Nepal’s Madhesi community–which feels deprived of rights in the country’s newly adopted Constitution— also live on the borders of poll-bound Bihar, there were also other reasons for discontent over the new Constitution. These include the delineation of electoral constituencies in the Terai (where more than 50 per cent of Nepal’s people live) which has not been done on the basis of the population in the plains; this creates a grievance about gerrymandering. Other complaints relate to citizenship norms that disallow children of Nepali mothers married to foreigners from inheriting Nepali citizenship. All said, the people of Nepal would be somewhat relieved that there has been a degree of closure to the Constitution-writing process. The recent earthquake had only worsened economic conditions and there was a sense of fatigue with the Constitution-writing process. The people required their polity to focus on governance in a stable Nepal. The polity could do well to take the necessary constitutional steps to address the Madhesi concerns and to live up to these expectations on governance.

Nepal has also conveyed to India its concerns over the continued obstruction in supply of essential goods and hoped that New Delhi will soon resolve the issue, especially with festivals like Dussehra and Diwali coming up which are celebrated big in the Himalayan nation. Meanwhile, when India helped Nepal during earthquake crisis, everybody in Nepal praised them and thanked them. However, now when the supplies are choked, people are reacting and protesting. It is quite natural.

Modern-day India and Nepal initiated their relationship with the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship and accompanying secret letters that defined security relations between the two countries, and an agreement governing both bilateral trade and trade transiting Indian territory. The 1950 treaty and letters exchanged between the then Indian government and Rana rulers of Nepal, stated that “neither government shall tolerate any threat to the security of the other by a foreign aggressor” and obligated both sides “to inform each other of any serious friction or misunderstanding with any neighbouring state likely to cause any breach in the friendly relations subsisting between the two governments.” These accords cemented a “special relationship” between India and Nepal that granted Nepalese the same economic and educational opportunities as Indian citizens in India and preferential treatment to Indians compared to other nationalities in Nepal. The Indo-Nepal border is open; Nepalese and Indian nationals may move freely across the border without passports or visas and may live and work in either country. However, Indians aren’t allowed to own land-properties or work in government institutions in Nepal, while Nepalese nationals in India are allowed to work in Indian government institutions (except in some states) and some civil services (the IFS, IAS, and IPS).

Hours after the Constitution was passed by an overwhelming majority, violence escalated and soon after Indian trucks, which trundle daily across the borders with essential supplies towards Kathmandu, stopped. Hundreds of trucks were waiting at the border with shipments including medicine, gasoline, cooking fuel and produce. India has dismissed suggestions that it has imposed any embargo against the supplies to Nepal and has maintained that the obstruction was due to protest and unrest in that country as Indian companies and transporters fear for their safety and security. However, the Nepalese envoy said his government has given assurance to India that it will ensure their safety and security after entering Nepal.

Raj Thackeray should go back to Shiv Sena: Athawale

Ramdas-AthawaleRPI chief Ramdas Athawale, an ally of the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra, advised the MNS president Raj Thackeray to return to Shiv Sena, his parent party.

Raj left the Uddhav Thackeray-led party and founded MNS way back in 2005.

As Uddhav had emerged as a strong leader in the past few years, Raj should rejoin Shiv Sena, Athawale said, speaking to reporters here.

Talking about post-poll scenario in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation, Athawale said his party would support Shiv Sena if BJP tried to win power by joining hands with Congress or NCP.

Qualification should be criteria for FTII chairmanship: Azmi

SabanaVeteran actress-activist Shabana Azmi has said an individual’s qualification should be the criteria for selection to key posts in cultural institutions like the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Azmi, a former student of the Pune-based institute, said FTII has the legacy of being headed by eminent personalities like Shyam Benegal and U R Ananthmurthy.

“BJP may want to put somebody of their own in a particular position. But qualification is something which we need to pay much more attention,” she said during a recent interview to a Malayalam television channel.

“We had persons of the quality of Shyam Benegal, U R Ananthmurthy and Mrinal Sen in FTII. So, there has to be people with such qualifications,” she said while replying to a question on recent controversies regarding the Centre’s decision to appoint Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chief.

The five-time National Award-winning actress also expressed concern over shrinking liberal space in the country.

“I can see there is huge dissatisfaction with liberal space shrinking at the moment and people are very much upset about it. We have a government which on one hand talks about very liberal things and on the other hand doing absolutely nothing to denounce those who are making retrograde remarks.”

On the fatwa issued by a Mumbai-based Muslim outfit against music maestro A R Rahman, Azmi said she strongly stands in solidarity with the Oscar winning musician. But, the 65-year-old actress felt that the media should not have given prominence to such an act by a low-profile outfit.

“I strongly stand in solidarity with Rahman in the issue.

The outfit which issued the fatwa does not enjoy any weight within the community. So, I will urge media that do not jump into anything taking even things that are said by inconsequential people,” she said.

Azmi, known for her iconic performances in films like “Ankur”, “Paar” and “Godmother”, also recalled a fatwa issued against her by some fundamental groups for tonsuring her head for a movie.

Don’t make Sanatan Sanstha a sacrificial lamb: Abhay Vartak

SanatanSanatan Sanstha activists organised a rally to protest against allegations made against the outfit and injustice meted against it starting from Gadkari Rangayatan, Thane. The protest was held under the leadership of Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson Abhay Vartak. The activists expressed their displeasure over anti-Hindu forces, progressive elements and political parties clamouring for imposing a ban on Sanatan Sanstha prior to the Police investigation.

Abhay Vartak, Spokesperson of Sanatan Sanstha said, “The Police agencies should investigate the case of the killing of Comrade Govind Pansare without falling prey to any pressure. The Government should take firm stand against the imposition of likely ban on the patriotic organisation Sanatan Sanstha without making it a sacrificial lamb.”

On this occasion, several devout Hindu organisations including Shiv Sena, Hindu Govansh Raksha Samiti, Swarajya Yuwa Pratishthan, Shri Yog Vedant samiti, Shree Sampraday, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, Hindu Yuva Morcha, Hindu Chetana Mandal, Hindu Rashtra Sena, Jaihind Sewa Samiti, Bajrang Dal, Shivkarya Pratishthan, Swarajya Hindu Sena, Hindu Navavarsha Swagat Samiti (Chembur), Shivswarajya, Sanvardhan Pratishthan, Shivkarya Pratishthan, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Sanatan Sanstha, etc. participated in the rally.
