Superstar Akshay Kumar has produced many films under his home production Hari Om Entertainment but the “Khiladi” star says he has no plans of turning director.
The 48-year-old “Baby” actor, who has completed 25 years in the industry, wants to do more varied roles and produce good films.
“My journey of 25 years has been great. I have managed to spend so many years in the industry that means I am doing good work. I will try to stay in this industry and do different roles and produce films. But, I will never direct,” Akshay said during the promotion of his upcoming film, “Singh is Bliing”.
In the film, which releases this Friday, the “Holiday” star will be seen opposite British model-actress Amy Jackson.
Akshay says importing artists from abroad does not mean India is short of talented people.
“There is nothing like Indian actresses won’t be able to pull of action scenes. In the film the girl doesn’t understands Hindi and Amy was perfect in that case.
“Our Prime Minister is trying to bring international companies to our country so that we grow more, similarly we want to make our industry international and bring in talent from overseas. We
want this import of international talent to be seen positively.”
The actor, who faced flak during Anees Bazmee’s “Singh is King”, also got stuck in some issues during Prabhudheva’s directorial venture, but has finally managed to get clearance from the concerned authorities.
“There have been no problem with ‘Singh is Bliing’. Some small issue was there initially, but now the film has been cleared by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Censor Board,” he said.
Coastal Shipping can be managed by coastal states in close co-ordination with each other involving local seafarers, fisher folk and traders. It has to be operated in a very practical manner with total support from the Customs (Central Govt Dept) and major ports (again headed by an IAS with entrenched bureaucracy). The practice of paying exorbitant prices for the tugs and paying excessive berthing charges should be stopped.
Selection and overseeing the masters of these coastal and inland craft will be an important function to ensure that they put their head down and work for their vessels and their trade. They should not misunderstand that they will not be subjected to training, retraining and performance reviews in coastal shipping. Coastal vessel operators should not perform substandard work.
Therefore Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari should work in tandem with an experienced Japanese engineer who has worked on coasts as a consultant or an adviser. Visit Yangon and meet the traders.
I had written two articles in the recent past about these topics but I doubt whether anyone has read them. Sailing vessels have been operating efficiently from Tuticorin to Colombo and from Gujarat coasts. I myself once surveyed several sailing vessels at Porbunder and “Tutkodi”. Trade has been flourishing along the Hooghly River. There is a need to encourage and provide support to such local expertise. Services should not be operated from Delhi with the assistance of those who never have sailed on a small coastal vessel.
Indid and Myanmar must improve their bilateral trade which will pave way for both nation’s economic development. “Mere piya gaye Rangoon, kiya hai wahan se telephoon, tumhari yaad satati hai….”. “Nadia chale, chale re dhara…tujhko chalna hoga….”. Watch the film China Town starring Shammi Kapoor and Shakila as you can notice Howrah bridge and the boats in the movie. Indian coastal shipping has failed to work profitably because we have ourselves complicated the things. Even though today’s youth are educated but they lack skills which are required to succeed in the real world. Therefore the government must take initiative and impart training to youth so that they can find employment. The government must also overhaul the educational system and give more importance to vocational training.
If you ask me to name some good crew, I will enlist the names of Mr Lawrence and M.V. Saleema. He had started working on Raj line ships from the the young age of 15. Even though he was not well educated but he possessed indepth knowledge of the ship and it functioning. Mr Lambson might be found on police boats operating from Port Blair. We used to go to Tuticorin anchorage during the early seventies.
According to Sanjay Nirupam huge corruption has been occurring in the name of nullah cleaning work since 2005.
Former Shiv Sainik and Mumbai Regional Congress Committee Chief Sanjay Nirupam has blamed Shiv Sena for the alleged irregularities in the nullah cleanliness project. According to Nirupam huge corruption has been occurring in the name of nullah cleaning work since 2005. Nirupam has demanded that probe should be conducted against BMC officials, contractors, standing committee chairperson, Mayor, Deputy Mayor for the substandard work. He also demanded a probe against Uddhav Thackeray. Earlier Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray and BMC Chief Ajoy Mehta had expressed their displeasure over the manner in which the desilting work has progressed in metropolis. Just like investigations were held in the irrigation scam in the same manner a probe must be held in the nullah cleaning work so that truth will be unveiled said Nirupam.
Nirupam said, “The BMC officials are working as per the instructions of the BJP. What action has the Deputy Mayor taken in this regard? A probe should be held against Uddhav Thackeray in the nullah cleaning scam. The BJP-Shiv Sena government has failed to take steps to prevent corruption despite being in power. Corruption has been occurring in the various works undertaken by the civic body. The government must order for a probe into the irregularities in the nullah cleaning scam.”
“BMC has already taken action against the officials who were found involved in these acts. Earlier Rahul Shewale had said that entire bills were not submitted to the BMC. Congress is making baseless allegations. It’s the job of authorities to conduct probe and we are ready to co-operate with the authorities. Only 16 crore bill has been submitted to the BMC. How can they call this corruption, let the investigations conclude and truth will be unveiled,” said Sunil Prabhu, Shiv Sena, MLA.
“Congress is making this allegation against Sena as they had fared poorly in the election and have become frustrated. The erstwhile government have always given clean-chit to the BMC earlier. So these allegations are being made with an eye on the BMC election. They are trying to rope in Uddhav Thackeray’s name to garner publicity and this act will continue as their frustration grows,” said Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe.
The Brihanmumbai has allocated Rs 281 crores for undertaking the nullah cleaning work for a period of two years out of which Rs 140 crore was meant to be spent during the first year. Only 60 per cent of the cleaning work was carried out prior to the beginning of monsoon. Only 16 per cent of the amount has been paid to contractors while the remaining amount is yet to be paid to them.
The BMC chief Ajoy Mehta had ordered an inquiry into the alleged nexus between contractors and civic engineers after shoddy work – despite spending over Rs 200 crore of taxpayers’ money – caused widespread flooding in Mumbai during the season’s first downpour in June.
Entering the 69th Year of Independence, we Indians are still unable to adapt the Article 1 of our constitution which says “Bharat as a Union of states” and the principles of preamble (Equality, fraternity etc). Racist, harsh and discriminatory attitude towards the dressing, physical features, complexion is rampant in our society. Is this the future “that our forefathers thought of”? We are progressing superficially but nothing has changed much, Dalit are discriminated even today in some of the parts of the country. They are not allowed to enter in kitchen or temples. There is no social acceptance for down trodden people. On the other side in urban areas, Dalit youth needs reservations and they are fighting for it but they do not accept merits. They are seeking advantage in studies as well as jobs; however refuse to come in main stream through competition. We call ourselves citizens of independent nation; however lack the mental growth and human progress. I am upset with political leaders who are making their bread on ‘Dalit’ politics. They are just bothered about themselves and not about their community. They are doing politics in community’s name. If leaders like Mayawati, Ramvilas Paswan and Ramdas Athawale are following footsteps of Babasaheb Ambedkar then today this community would have been liberated and prospered in many ways.
Even the most tolerant person can never achieve open minded thought because, in a cognitive sense, each new experience must be amalgamated with the previous before it can be processed. Based on what has been learned about prejudice so far, human beings have a great deal to learn about each other before prejudice can be reduced. Even in the earliest civilizations, people felt that guilt and misfortune could be shifted from one man to another, known in modern times as projection. Discrimination helps to boost the self-esteem. One guaranteed way to maintain high self-esteem is by having someone to look down on. Stereotyped characteristics are, in some cases, a displacement of personality traits which are undesirable. Guilt, fear, anger, anxiety and greed are some of the most prominent, but not the only emotions for which prejudice serves a functional significance.
The cognitive, social and humanistic perspectives rely heavily on each other to provide a full explanation of prejudice. Woman’s plight is even more pathetic, verbal abuse as well as accusing them of illegal and immoral trade exposed the mindset of our Nation. Only people who have experienced the horror and the brutalising effects of the caste system will understand what it means to be a Dalit in Indian society. A Dalit is considered to be untouchable, invisible, and unapproachable and even, in a way, unthinkable.
Dalits have been suffering, humiliated, martyr from the last two thousand years. Does the world know about this man-made tragedy? Even though untouchability was officially abolished by law in the 1950’s in India, the Dalits still experience the agony of untouchability very deeply in all walks of life: social, economic and political. For Dalit children, the future does not look much better. Fifteen million children are bonded labourers, working in slave-like conditions, and the majority of them are Dalits. Thousands of girls are forced into prostitution even before reaching the age of puberty. Devadasis, literally meaning “female servants of god,” usually belong to the Dalit community. These girls are pretty and have caught the fancy of a higher caste man. Once dedicated as a devadasi, the girl can become the playmate of such a man. Afterwards, she is cast aside and auctioned off to an urban brothel. As a devadasi, she is unable to marry forever.
Dalit women also suffer another form of abuse. They are often raped as a form of retaliation. Sexual abuse and other forms of violence against women are used by landowners to inflict political “lessons”, and crush dissent within the Dalit community. It’s really shameful for all of us that such activities are taking place in our country. After independence everybody was scared that how a country like India can remain united out of its diversity in all walks of life i.e. caste, tribe, religion etc. No religion or nation preaches intolerance or endorses the view to look down upon anyone. If we feel that looking down on someone who is not from our background is justified and flaunts our nationalistic attitude, then we must realize that it is time we review our understanding. A prejudice is a belief about a group of people based on their religion, ethnicity, race, gender, handicap or any other factors. It can be positive or negative, but as a prejudice involves passing judgement on a large group of people regardless of their individual qualities, it is considered to be unfair. Prejudice which causes unfair treatment is called discrimination, and in many cases discrimination can be illegal. Prejudices and discrimination can result in serious problems for both the people that hold them and the people that they are prejudiced against. Most of the people who discriminate against a group do so because of upbringing or societal reasons. However, some prejudices are due to a bad experience with a certain person or a traumatic life event that has caused an individual to stereotype an entire group. Many prejudices develop from fears or misunderstanding of a certain culture or race.
Conflict of interest in job and education are very unfortunate. It may start trust deficit among the Indian. Are we becoming a nation of bigoted folks? By committing hate crimes against the people of the north eastern states, we are sowing the seeds of dissension. If the police don’t apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice, we are putting our pluralistic structure of our country, of which we are so proud, in real danger.
More than 1,200 resident doctors of state-run King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital have called for a strike against the alleged assault on three of their colleagues by relatives of a minor boy who died of dengue in the wee hours of Friday.
Protesting doctors have demanded that until an FIR is not filed under Doctors Prevention Act and the accused arrested, they will continue with mass bunking.
“Our colleagues Dr Suhas, Dr Kushal and Dr Puneet were assaulted by relatives and beaten by iron rods leaving bruise marks all over their bodies,” said Dr Amit Lomte, Vice President of Central MARD, the body regulating resident doctors in Maharashtra.
Neither police nor the hospital administration have come forward to listen to our anguish, he claimed.
The doctors were said to be beaten after they failed to admit the boy suffering from dengue into the ICU ward on account of alleged non-availability of beds.
The boy was later admitted to the general ward around 9 pm last night.
The boy, aged around 10, died around 1.30 AM after which his infuriated relatives allegedly roughed up the three doctors with rods and abused them, said Lomte.
All the three injured doctors have been hospitalised.
Seers and devotees on Friday took ‘shahi snan’ (royal bath) at Kushavartatirthi pond in Nashik on the third ‘parvani’ (auspicious day) of the ongoing Kumbh Mela.
Today was the last ‘shahi snan’ at Trimbakeshwar, which marks the culmination of all royal baths at the ongoing religious congregation.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis performed the ‘puja’ at the Kushavartatirthi pond here at around midnight last night.
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel is also likely to arrive later in the day, while Assam Governor PB Acharya paid a visit at Nashik.
Seers belonging to seven ‘akhadas’ took the royal bath at the pond after they reached the spot leading colourful processions.
President of Trimbakeshwar Purohit Sangh, Jayant Shikhare, said that those who could not visit Kumbh for shahi snans on all specific days should not feel disappointed as the Mela will continue till August next year and pilgrims can come to take holy dip at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar at anytime during this period.
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made for today’s royal bath at the pond and for pilgrims who thronged the ghats to take a holy dip.
District Superintendent of Police Sanjay Mohite said additional personnel have been deployed at various spots and they are monitoring the situation from the control room.
Divisional Revenue Commissioner Eknath Davle, District Collector Dipendrasinh Kushwah, Special IG (Nashik Range), JJ Singh, and other officials have been camping here since yesterday.
A fleet of 700 special buses is being operated by the State Road Transport Corporation to ferry pilgrims from the parking area on the outskirts of the city to the bathing ghats.
Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who is currently serving his five year jail term after being convicted in the 1993 bomb blasts case, made it clear that he had never filed for pardon with the Maharashtra Governor nor had he requested anyone else to do so on his behalf.
Dutt’s advocates Hitesh Jain and Subhash Jadhav, in a statement released today said the recent articles stating that Maharashtra Governor has turned down the actor’s plea for pardon, are based on an application made by retired Supreme Court Justice Markandey Katju seeking pardon for Dutt and other convicts in the case.
“No such application for grant of pardon was ever made by Sanjay Dutt or his family members to the Governor seeking pardon. Further, Sanjay Dutt or his family members never approached former Supreme Court Justice Katju for making an application for pardon on behalf of Dutt,” the statement said.
“Justice Katju has suo moto made this application for pardon not only for Dutt but also for other convicts in the case like Zaibunissa Kazi,” it added.
The statement said that Dutt has almost finished his imprisonment and shall be a free man soon.
Katju had petitioned Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao to pardon Dutt as he was “not a terrorist” and had only “erred”.
Rao had two days back rejected the pardon plea following the advice of the Maharashtra Home Department which had recommended that granting Dutt pardon would set a bad precedent.
56-year-old Dutt was convicted in 2007 by a special TADA court under the Arms Act for possession of arms and sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment. Dutt had spent 18 months in jail in 1996 after his arrest.
In May 2013, the actor surrendered after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction and sentence. The actor has since then been lodged in the Yerwada Central prison at Pune.
The India Army on Friday refuted media reports that a consignment of trucks being shipped from Mumbai to Indian peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo was carrying drugs.
According to reports, the Kenyan authorities found drugs and weapons on a ship after they checked it following a tip-off.
“The Indian Army had handed over a consignment of 205 vehicles, including 36 APCs (BMPs), with inherent weapons to UN contracted Merchant Vessel (for end to end delivery) at Mumbai on September 11 with detailed list of weapons and equipment,” said a statement from the army.
“Any further addition of weapons or any other material placed within the Indian Army vehicles is not responsibility of the Indian Army,” it said.
“The issue has been taken up with UN Headquarter and Mission Headquarter at DRC and it is being progressed further by the UN.”
Meanwhile, sources said a check was carried out by the Kenyan authorities following a tip-off, but refuted the report that drugs were found on the merchant vessel.
The sources said it was possible that the authorities objected to the inherent weapons on the BMPs, and the ship authorities may not have shown the documents.
A couple from Mumbra was arrested by crime branch police officials for allegedly cheating a Mumbra housewife and relieving her of gold ornaments and cash amounting to around Rs. 30 lakh, a police official said.
