Ambedkar memorial function postponed again

The proposed function to lay the foundation stone for the grand Ambedkar Memorial on October 4 has been postponed again, official sources said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to perform the ceremony at Dadar during his upcoming daylong visit to Mumbai on October 4, along with the foundation stone ceremonies for two Mumbai Metro railway lines.

However, the Ambedkar Memorial function has been deferred though no reasons are cited officially.

The third postponement has evoked protest from the state Congress which demanded to know “what was more important than this function” for the PM.

“The foundation stone for a world-class memorial for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar has been postponed due to the tight schedule of the PM. Even earlier, the PM was reportedly expected to perform the foundation stone laying ceremony on April 14 which was postponed due to his foreign tour,” said state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.

He said in a statement that Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam had carried out a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony at the Indu Mills Complex where the memorial is due to come up.

However, Sawant said it was regrettable that again the October 4 date has been postponed.

“Whether it is the ceremony for the Ambedkar Memorial or finalizing the purchase of the house where Ambedkar lived in London, the government continues to be lax. It was only after public anger that the government finally completed the London house purchase recently,” he said.

The Maharashtra government has planned a grand memorial to Ambedkar, the chief architect of Indian Constitution, on 12.5 acres of prime land at Dadar.

Subdued Eid celebrations in Maharashtra

Eid was celebrated here and in other parts of Maharashtra on Friday with subdued fervour and enthusiasm in the wake of the Haj stampede tragedy in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in which over 700 people were killed on Thursday.

Special prayers were offered by men, women and youth at various mosques in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Nashik, Aurangabad, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Pune and other cities and in important pockets of Muslim populations.

Later, goats were sacrificed to commemorate the readiness of Ibrahim, the apostle of God, to sacrifice his son and honour the Almighty’s command, effectively signifiying renunciation. By a miracle, at the last minute Irahim’s child was replaced by a goat.

Goat meat, considered auspicious, was offered to friends, relatives and poor people, and people exchanged greetings.

The celebrations were low-key on account of the Makkah tragedy which left 717 Hajis dead, including one pilgrim from Maharashtra, besides 13 others from elsewhere in India.

The ongoing severe drought conditions in many parts of the state and the state-wide ban on beef, enforced strictly since last May, also added to the no-frills celebrations of the Eid.

The Social Education and Welfare Association launched a drive to help farmers in distress in the worst-hit districts of Beed, Latur and Osmanabad, as part of the Eid festival.

Government chalks out plans to revive rivers to fight drought

Maharashtra government is set to revive rivers in rural areas as part of its efforts to save the state reeling under drought.

Water Conservation Minister Pankaja Munde said the river revival plan will be prepared by the Maharashtra Water Conservation Corporation and the focus will be to revive the rivers in drought and farmer-suicide prone areas.

“Maharashtra Water Conservation Corporation has been asked to prepare the master plan,” she said.

The Minister said after the Jalyukt Shivar yogana, revival of rivers in rural areas will be a major campaign of the department.

“In the last few days, rains have created good water storage in the Jalyukt shivars,” she said.

Munde noted that water conservation works should be taken up in areas on priority basis, i.e. where there is water scarcity, low human development index, decreasing water table and areas that are perennially drought prone.

“Water conservation department should focus on areas where water from irrigation dams cannot be reached,” she added.

Truck tries to run over cop on anti-sand smuggling duty

A police sub-inspector was allegedly roughed up by a group of five persons who also tried to mow him down after he intercepted their truck at a check-post during a drive for checking the illegal smuggling of sand.

Inspector Ghanshyam Adhav of Talasari police station said that sub-inspector Ali Mohammad was on duty at Talasari check- post on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway when he was attacked.

The accused allegedly got annoyed that the officer was checking only heavy vehicles, he said.

They are alleged to have tried to mow Mohammad down with their truck and also attempted to attack him with a knife. The sub-inspector was left injured and unconscious in the attack.

The sub-inspector was subsequently admitted to a local hospital.

Of the five assailants, three have been identified as Afzal, Pappu and Allarakha, police, meanwhile, said, adding that no arrests have been made so far.

A case has been registered against them under various sections of IPC, including attempt to murder, assault, rioting and preventing a government servant from discharging his duty.

Solve Patel stir through dialogue: Shiv Sena

Linking RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s call for a review of the reservation policy with the Patel quota stir, Shiv Sena on Friday said the BJP government in Gujarat as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi would have to face “consequences” if a solution is not found to the issue by having a re-look at the quota system.

The Sena, a long-time ally of the BJP with a penchant to take digs at its bigger partner, suggested a dialogue with the Patel leaders to restore peace in the state.

“RSS chief has asked the BJP to revisit the reservation policy. A review will pacify the agitation in the state. Hardik Patel (who spearheads the stir) needs to take care of his life and the government should also take care. Otherwise, if something untoward happens, Modi will have to bear the consequences,” the Sena said in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana.’

“If talks are held with Hardik Patel in a congenial environment, a solution can be sought (over the reservation issue). If what Hardik claimed about his abduction and the subsequent threats to his life are true, it will make matters only worse,” the party said.

The Sena noted that Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s claim that her state is peaceful and is an attractive destination for investments has fallen flat on its face.

“Gujarat is in the midst of industrial development and is also the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The most important fact is that Gujarat is a political laboratory for the BJP where it cannot afford a chemical problem,” it said.

“Such turmoil has happened in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. But now Gujarat has been battered by a bomb called Hardik. Maharashtra has an emotional bonding with Gujarat, we are thus concerned,” the editorial added.

Pakistan writes to UN about India’s plan to build wall along LoC

LoCIntroducing a new irritant into the bilateral ties, Pakistan has complained to UN Security Council alleging that India was building a wall along the Line of Control (LoC) in violation of the world body’s resolutions.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to UN Maleeha Lodhi, has in a letter to President of the Security Council, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, alleged that India was planning to construct a 10-meter high and 135-feet wide embankment (wall) along the 197-km Working Boundary between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan.

The planned wall, according to Pakistan, was to convert the LoC “into a quasi international border”.

India did not immediately react directly to the allegation on the alleged wall plan but described the contents of two letters written by Lodhi on September 4 and 9 as “contradictory”.

India would respond to these claims “at the appropriate time”, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif are staying in Hotel Waldorf Astoria but Islamabad’s attitude, as reflected in Lodhi’s letters, appear to have diminished further any prospects of a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In the September 9 letter, Lodhi expressed “deep concern” over the alleged wall plan on a “submission” made by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, whom MEA spokesperson Swarup described as a “global terrorist”.

“I believe the second letter (dated September 9) is based on some kind of submission made by Salahuddin, who is a person that we consider to be a global terrorist. At the appropriate time we will respond to this,” Swarup said.

The first letter dated September 4 states that there was no bilateral dialogue. Swarup disputed it saying the BSF and Park Rangers have already met.

“So that letter is contradictory in itself that there is no dialogue. There has been a dialogue,” Swarup said.

“Has any action been taken by the UN on these letters. That is the first question. If there is action taken by the UN we will respond appropriately. If there is no action taken by the UN then this will mean that nobody has taken cognisance of the letters,” Swarup said.

In the letter, Lodhi said that Pakistan “considers the embankment a permanent structure that will bring about a material change in the territory in violation interlaid of… Security Council Resolution…Of 1948.

Congress alleges ‘biggest’ mines scam in Rajasthan; seeks Vasundhara Raje’s ouster

Congress on Friday alleged a scam of Rs. 45,000 crore in the allocation of mines in Rajasthan and demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje along with a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe into the matter.

Months after the party led a clamour for her sacking over the Lalit Modi row, Congress held Raje “guilty” for the allocation of as many as 653 mines in alleged contravention of Centre’s policy.

The opposition party also questioned the continued silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard despite his assertion that he would neither take bribe and nor allow anybody to practise corruption.

At a joint press conference at AICC headquarters, PCC chief Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan CLP leader Rameshwar Dudi and chief Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that the trail in the alleged scam reaches the doorstep of the chief minister, though only a top official has been arrested in the case.

Pilot and Dudi said that the arrest of Principal Secretary (Mines) Ashok Singhvi was significant given that he had held the same position during Raje’s previous term.

They accused Raje of causing a loss of Rs 45,000 crore to the state exchequer by allocating 653 mines in Rajasthan on “first-come-first-served” basis without following transparent procedure and by not auctioning them.

This was done despite the Centre telling the state not to do so until the policy in this regard had been formulated, they further claimed.

“This is the biggest scam in Rajasthan… This is the biggest loot in Rajasthan. We demand a CBI probe monitored by Supreme Court. We also demand that the chief minister immediately step down as an independent probe is not possible till she holds the post,” Pilot said even as he rejected a probe currently being pursued by the Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Surjewala further alleged that one lakh bighas of land — which has mineral value of up to Rs 2 lakh crore — was given away without auction as part of the allocation of the 653 mines.

“Had it been auctioned, Rajasthan government could have earned as much as Rs 45,000 crore,” he said.

‘Professional criminal’ Somnath Bharti changing mobile phones frequently: Delhi Police

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Somnath Bharti, who continues to evade arrest in a domestic violence and attempt to murder case lodged by his wife, is changing his locations and mobile phones from time to time, says Delhi Police.

While speaking to media, Joint Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Dependra Pathak said, “Bharti is evading arrest and behaving just like a professional criminal.”

Pathak said several police teams have been deployed in the operation and they have been sent to various potential hideouts of the former law minister, who has been booked for alleged attempt to murder and domestic violence based on a complaint filed by his wife, Lipika Mitra.

Importantly, the Supreme Court will on Monday hear Bharti’s plea for suspension of his arrest in connection with the domestic violence case against him.

The AAP legislator from Delhi’s Malviya Nagar constituency moved the apex court after the Delhi High Court declined his plea for anticipatory bail in the case.

Bharti was named in a first information report (FIR) registered in Dwarka in west Delhi by his wife who alleged domestic violence and attempt to murder, and attempt to cause miscarriage without her consent.

The high court in its judgment also took note of an email sent by Mitra to Bharti on March 20, 2013, stating that Bharti’s dog had bitten her six times when she was seven months pregnant. The court said police have produced the relevant medical papers.
