Daniel Craig’s James Bond named ‘booziest ever’ 007 agent

Daniel-CraigActor Daniel Craig has been revealed as the booziest ever James Bond, after drinking 20 units of alcohol per movie.

Ian Fleming’s secret agent has always enjoyed his drinks, but according to a new study, the “Skyfall” star’s version of 007 consumes far more alcohol than his predecessors.

A study by The Grocer has shown that with an average of 20 units per movie over his appearances in “Quantom of Solace”, “Casino Royale” and “Skyfall”, Craig’s Bond is well ahead of Pierce Brosnan (12), Sean Connery and Roger Moore (11 each).

George Lazenby managed nine units during his one and only appearance as Bond in “Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, while Timothy Dalton rounded off the list with an average of 4.5.

The Grocer’s Rob Brown said, “We can exclusively reveal that Daniel Craig is by far the booziest Bond the world has ever seen, having knocked back an average of 20 units of alcohol per film since his debut in 2006’s ‘Casino Royale’.

“This matters, for a number of reasons. Bond is the most powerful film franchise on the planet. The previous installment of 007, ‘Skyfall’, was the highest-grossing British film, ever.

“A partnership with 007 can pay big for brands, as booze brands as diverse as Bollinger, Jim Beam, Red Stripe and Heineken will attest. Belvedere’s decision to jump into bed with Bond is a landmark moment for the brand,” Brown added.

Poonam Pandey is small screen’s ‘Jalebi Bai’

PoonamActress Poonam Pandey will be making her fiction debut on the small screen with the forthcoming comic capers ‘Total Nadaniyaan’ and ‘Pyaar Marriage Ssshhh…’, where she will be seen essaying the role of ‘Jalebi Bai’.

Poonam, best known for her stint on reality shows like ‘Comedy Classes’ and ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’, will be seen in an all new comical avatar on the two shows.

“I am really excited for my role in ‘Total Nadaniyaan’ and ‘Pyaar Marriage Ssshhh…’ as this is for the first time, my audiences will see me in a completely new avatar, different from the roles that I have been associated with,” Poonam, who has appeared in films like ‘Nasha’ and ‘Malini& Co.’, said in a statement.

“Shooting for the shows was a great experience, although I was apprehensive initially about the environment since it is not like the movies, but I am glad that each and every co-actor was very supportive and cooperative,” she added.

The episodes of ‘Total Nadaniyaan’ and ‘Pyaar Marriage Ssshhh…’ featuring Poonam will be aired on BIG MAGIC.

Kunal Khemu denies of any similarities between ‘Bhaag Johnny’ and ‘Kalyug’

Kunal-KhemuActor Kunal Kemmu says he is eager to do romantic-comedy films and play a “hardcore negative character”.

“There are two kinds of characters that I’m eager to do. I haven’t done any rom-com or romantic film and I haven’t done any hardcore negative character. So, these are the two characters that haven’t explored yet so I am hoping to get a suitable script and do such roles as early as possible,” said Kunal.

Kunal, who is promoting his forthcoming thriller ‘Bhaag Johnny’ with actress Zoa Morani, says his wish to portray a negative character has somewhat got fulfilled with this film.

He said: “In one of the tracks, I’ve got the opportunity to portray a negative shade which is for the first time. It’s not absolutely a negative character, but it is the darkest that I’ve played. As an actor, it is extremely interesting for me and so I’m very excited for it to see how the audience reacts to the film.”

Kunal’s ‘Kalyug’ was also an emotional thriller, but he dismisses any similarities between ‘Bhaag Johnny’ and the 2005 film.

He said: “The characters and the stories are completely different. There is a good amount of freshness in the film. Perhaps you’ll see some similarities in the first track, but the circumstances are different. So, if you compare ‘Bhaag Johnny’ with ‘Kalyug’, then there are hardly any similarities.”

‘Bhaag Johnny’, directed by Shivamm Nair, is releasing on Friday.

Shiv Sena-MNS coming together?

Raj-and-UdhdhavAfter the old photos of Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Thackeray and Jaidev Thackeray were posted on Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s official facebook page MNS Adhikrut speculations are rife whether both Uddhav and Raj will come together ahead of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal election scheduled to be held in October. The MNS which managed to win only one seat in the assembly election last year is already losing its foothold in the state. The traditional Marathi voters too have deserted MNS. On the other hand, Shiv Sena is at loggerheads with its ruling partner BJP.

Sena has been criticising the policies of the BJP run government in Maharashtra through its editorial published in the party mouthpiece Saamna. The party also is planning to contest 150 seats in the Bihar assembly election. Shiv Sena is likely to go solo in the Kalyan-Dombivli civic body election due its differences with the BJP. There were already reports in media that Sena might go for a pre-poll alliance with MNS for the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal corporation election. The timing of uploading the photos on facebook too has triggered a debate on social media about a patch up between the estranged cousins.

BalaMNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar said people should not politicise this issue. He said, “Raj, Uddhav and Jaidev are brothers and the uploading of their photographs on social media has nothing to do with politics. However it would be good if both Raj and Uddhav resolve their differences and come together ahead of the Kalyan-Dombivali civic body election.”

RamBJP MLA Ram Kadam said, “Shiv Sena is giving a deaf ear to MNS. Both the parties are not coming together for the Kalyan Dombivli elections. MNS is doing this to just to remain in news and garner publicity. This is just a political stunt of MNS.”

UdhdhavAnil Shidore who handles MNS Adhikrut’s facebook page said, “There is no specific reason why these photos were posted ahead of coming Kalyan-Dombivali Elections, as the elections continue to happen in some parts of the state. So it was just a co-incidence that the MNS Adhikrut team found these rare photographs now, and we posted it. Every member of MNS has always been fond of seeing such rare photographs of their leader, so there is nothing political about it.”

When AV spoke to Sunil Shegaonkar, a Kandivali resident he said, “Whatever is posted on Facebook is not true. We can’t say that both Uddhav and Raj will come together on the basis of photographs uploaded on social media. Bal Thackeray had said that both of them can take a decision in this regard.”

Kiran Shelke, a Borivali resident said, “Such type of news has been reported earlier too. Whatever decision they take it should be in the interest of the state. Let both Uddhav and Raj make an official announcement regarding this and we should not read too much into it.”

Umesh Patil, a Malad resident said, “Just because Uddhav and Raj Thackeray’s photo is posted on social media doesn’t mean that they will together. Let them decide what they want to do with their political career.”

“If Uddhav and Raj comes together then it will benefit both of them as they can consolidate their party’s position in Maharashtra. The state had suffered a lot after both of them had parted ways” said Urvesh Shah a businessman from Kandivali.

“We can’t make conclusion based on the photos posted on facebook. It’s too premature to make a comment about Uddhav and Raj patch up now” said Rajesh Nemade a Dahisar resident.

Regulation of encryption is the need of the hour

Looking at too much of outrage and objection, the government finally withdrew a contentious draft encryption policy. It will come later in public domain again after reworking on some of the clauses which are giving rise to “misgivings”. The telecom minister had ensured people that his government fully supported the freedom on social media and has in fact promoted social media activism. However, the regulation of encryption technologies was the need of the hour. Some sort of encryption policy is being followed all over the world, particularly in free democratic societies. The cyber space interaction, commercial, official and private, is on the rise. Many of these come in an encrypted form. Obviously, the concerns of security are certainly there. India was lacking in having any sound policy on encryption. A proper expert committee was constituted. But when Government noted the concerns of the public and some expressions that were avoidable, they thought of reworking on it, and give a clear roadmap to (state) which category of services, creators (of encryption) it applies (to) and for which (categories) which doesn’t apply. The DeitY website has removed the two PDF files of the draft and its addendum. The department of electronics and information technology (DeitY) recently released the draft of the National Encryption Policy. The policy aims to enable (an) information security environment and secure transactions in cyberspace for individuals, businesses and government including nationally critical information systems and networks.

The draft National Encryption Policy that had been released on Monday evening was not the final view of the government and it was placed in public domain just to seek comments and suggestions from the people. The provisions of the draft policy that was put on the website of Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) would ensure that the government will have access to all encrypted information stored on computer servers in India, including personal emails, messages or even data. The policy also wanted users to store all encrypted communication for at least 90 days and make it available to security agencies, if required, in text form.

The rapid rate of growth of internet-based service delivery has made it necessary to put in place standards that protect privacy and increase the security of the internet and associated information systems.

In our day-to-day activities, we frequently use internet in our devices. If the website we are accessing begins with HTTPS, instead of HTTP, it is using a secure channel to transmit data. Similarly, websites store user information in an encrypted format, like a user name and passwords. Cryptography initially had application in military and diplomatic communications, but is now used widely in Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), secure email, electronic fund transfers, secure messaging applications to name a few. The information technology act has provisions for such guidelines to be issued for encryption (Sec 84A) and decryption (Sec 69). Most of the technical terms like Hashing Algorithms (used to map digital data of arbitrary size to digital data of fixed size), keys (used to encrypt and decrypt communication), digital signatures (used to ensure confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of communication), etc have been explicitly defined in the IT Act. Further, the policy aims to promote the use of digital signatures by all entities, including the government, for trusted communication, transactions and authentication. And lastly, it envisages adoption of information security best practices by all entities and stakeholders in the government, public and private sector enterprises and citizens at large.

The policy categorises users in three types of groups – government (G), which would include all central and state government departments (including sensitive departments/agencies while performing non-strategic and non-operational role). Business (B), that includes all statutory organisations, executive bodies, business and commercial establishments, including all PSUs and academic institutions. As also a category for citizens (C) that includes all citizens (including personnel of government/business (G/B) performing non-official/personal functions). It then mandates that use of encryption technology for storage and communication within G group of users and technology for communications between G group and B/C groups will be done as per standards specified through notification by the government from time to time.

For the users of groups B/C it mandates that such users should not only adhere to standards notified by the government but also produce plain text and encrypted copies of communications if demanded by law enforcement agencies for up to 90 days from the date of transaction. The onus to store this plain text communication lies with end user of each category, and if the entity is based out of India then the responsibility of providing the plain text communication lies with the corresponding entity based in India. The primary area of concern is the insistence on storage and provisioning of plain text communication by end user entities. The notion is antithetical to the idea of promoting encryption practices. While it will add to the infrastructure costs of businesses to maintain such databases, the general public is practically unaware of most of these practices. The original proposal said that apps and platforms would need to either register the sort of encryption service they use with the government, or sign up to use government-approved encryption services.

In 2010, the UPA government said it would ban BBM (Blackberry Messenger Service) in India unless BlackBerry (then Research in Motion) gave security agencies access to snoop on emails. The two would eventually reach an arrangement that allows the government to intercept messages sent on Blackberry’s platform. Now, the government has bowed down to the pressure created by people and taken the draft back, meanwhile National Encryption Policy is issued without the knowledge of the IT Minister – let the government take responsibility and take action against whosoever has authorized to issue the same – even as a draft. If not, in future, there may be several such draconian laws may come up without the knowledge of the ministers in the government which will hurt common people.

11 million passengers ditch MSRTC buses

stOnce the pride of the state, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has lost a whopping 11.32 million passengers and consequently accumulated losses of Rs.1,934 crore last year, a Right to Information query has revealed.

RTI activist Anil Galgali sought details on the performance of the MSRTC on the passengers using its buses, fare charges and the expenses.

MSRTC deputy general manager S.D. Mainhalikar informed him that in 2014-2015, around 245,60,33,000 passengers travelled by ST buses compared to 256,60,65,000 during the previous year — a staggering decline of 11,32,00,000 in just a year.

In contrast, the corporation earned Rs.25.94 per km in 2013-2014 against an expenditure of Rs.35.22 per km. The expense shot up to Rs.36.85 in 2014-2015 against an income of Rs.27.57 per km.

The fleet of state-run buses logged 208,48,55,000 km in 2014-2015 compared to 204,65,74,000 km the previous year.

While the corporation’s total expenditure stood at Rs.5748,11,02,000 in 2013-2014, it increased Rs.7682,88,83,000 this year, adding to the mountain of losses, Galgali pointed out.

Last year, the accumulated loss stood at Rs.1899,02,65,000, which has grown to Rs.1934,77,81,000, notching an increase of Rs.35,75,16,000.

This year, the total income was Rs.5308,53,85,000 against an expenditure of Rs.7207,56,50,000.

Galgali urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to come up with a concrete action plan to revive and save the MSRTC from dying by reducing passenger taxes on the lines of Gujarat and Karnataka.

“The CM must give strict instructions to monitor and rein in MSRTC’s ever-growing expenses, especially since the bureaucrats seem to be taking no steps in this direction,” Galgali told IANS.

“Some level of accountability fixing on the concerned officials would help MSRTC which serves the poorest of poor in the remotest corners of the state,” he added.

On the steep decline in just one year, Galgali said this could be due to many private operators exploiting MSRTC’s shortcomings by providing convenient connections, higher comfort and cleanliness levels, options of ordinary, deluxe and air-conditioned services with efficiency to the passengers.

World Bank keen to support smart city projects: Fadnavis

DevendraThe World Bank has shown keen interest in supporting smart city and urban development projects in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

Fadnavis said he had requested The World Bank to support the government’s flagship ‘Jal Yukt Shivar Abhiyan’ (scheme) which will ensure sustainable agricultural development and provide assured irrigation.

A High level delegation led by The World Bank Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Mulyani Indrawati met the Chief Minister and other officials at the state secretariat here.

Fadnavis thanked the delegation for choosing Maharashtra as part of their India visit.

“I am happy that The World Bank has shown keen interest in supporting smart city and urban development projects,” he said.

The discussions were also related to various projects being undertaken by Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) including the Mumbai Metro, an official at Chief Minister’s office said.

“Indrawati told the Chief Minister that The World Bank would positively consider supporting the Metro project and also expressed interest in investing in long term development projects in the state.

“She also praised the state’s ‘ease of doing business’ policy and expressed keenness in partnering with the government to upgrade Mumbai’s public transport system,” he said.

HC orders for detailed affidavit on Radhe Maa’s alleged sex racket

RadheIn more trouble for controversial ‘godwoman’ Radhe Maa, the Bombay High Court has directed the city police to file a detailed affidavit on its investigation into a complaint alleging that she is running a sex racket in the name of religion.

A bench of Justice SVM Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi passed the order after hearing a PIL by advocate Falguni Brahmbhatt accusing Radhe Maa of obscenity and police of inaction on her complaint against the self-styled godwoman on Monday.

The Mumbai Police had earlier submitted a report, saying that an FIR has been registered against Radhe Maa and investigation is on.

Brahmbhatt, however, countered by saying that she has submitted additional information to the police but no action was taken in that.

“Sex racket is going on. Young boys and girls are lured by this lady. On the pretext of getting ashirwad, they are forced to have sex,” advocate Brahmbhatt said.

She also submitted that the charitable trust run by Radhe Maa is not registered.

“Crores of rupees are collected,” she alleged.

The court then directed the police to file a detailed affidavit in two weeks stating what steps it has taken.

Eknath Khadse takes jibes at Sharad Pawar as rains wash away ‘drought threat’

Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Minister Eknath Khadse took jibes at NCP chief Sharad Pawar saying as rains have washed away threat of drought, the former Union Minister will have to look for another “issue” to take on the state government.

“Since there have been good rains in the last few days, the threat of drought does not remain. Hence, Pawar will have to come up with a new issue,” Khadse, who is the Revenue Minister, said when asked about Pawar’s three day tour of Vidarbha to take stock of drought in the region.

He said that due to satisfactory rains in the last few days, the threat of drought is almost over.
“The number of tankers supplying water have been cut down by 70 per cent. We are expecting a good Rabi season,” Khadse told reporters here.

He said despite good rains, cloud seeding will continue as planned till October.
“Rs 27 crore contract has already been awarded for 100 hours of cloud seeding. The contractor has said additional 100 hours of cloud seeding would be done free of cost. So far, the experiment has shown satisfactory results. Hence, the project would continue as planned,” the minister added.

Khadse said the state government will implement a horticulture scheme on one lakh hectare under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) for three years.

Salman’s lawyer seeks to pick holes in witnesses’ accounts

The lawyer of Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who has filed an appeal against his conviction and five years’ prison term in the 2002 hit-and-run case, told the Bombay High Court that testimonies of the prosecution witnesses were inconsistent and unreliable.

The sessions court had on May 6 found Salman guilty of ramming his Toyota Land Cruiser into a shop in suburban Bandra in a drunken state, leading to death of one person and injury of four others who were sleeping on the pavement.

Advocate Amit Desai, Salman’s lawyer, argued before the HC today that the four injured persons, while testifying in the court, were totally silent on the conduct of the actor’s friend, singer Kamaal Khan and Salman’s bodyguard, constable Ravindra Patil, both of whom were in the car at the time.

“There is not a word about what Patil and Kamaal Khan did at that time. Did they help victims? Or they helped in lifting the car? Or did they leave the place?….There is nothing to suggest whether Kamaal Khan had taken alcoholic drinks or whether he was sober,” said Desai.

These two should have described the whole incident but while Kamaal Khan was not examined at all, Patil had just “one song to render that Salman was drunk and he was driving”, said Desai. Patil, an eye-witness, died during the trial.

Three of the four witnesses who sustained injuries in the mishap — Muslim Nimayat Shaikh, Mannu Khan and Mohammed Kalim Iqbal Pathan — were tutored by the police as they testified that Salman Khan got out from the right side of the car (driver’s seat). However, another witness, Mohammed Abdullah Shaikh, did not support this, Desai contended.

Though the accident took place on September 28, 2002, and on October 31, 2002, the charge sheet was filed, the witness Muslim Shaikh had said that his statement was recorded two and half months after the incident, while Mannu Khan, another witness, had said he simply signed a statement given to him, Desai said.

The arguments before Justice A R Joshi will continue on Wednesday.
