Deleting WhatsApp messages could become ‘illegal’

Indian government has formulated a new policy to ensure that its law enforcement agencies have easy access to encrypted information. But with this, your sense of privacy and security will remain at stake.

With this policy, the government aims to keep a check on the use of the technology by specifying the algorithms and the length of the encryption keys used by different categories of people.

Consumers will also be required to store the plain texts of encrypted information for 90 days from the date of a transaction and provide the text to agencies when required under the laws of the country. Most email services, instant messaging services including WhatsApp,  use some form of encryption, so the rule would apply to all of them.

The policy adds that citizens and businesses must save all encrypted messages (including personal or unofficial ones) and their unencrypted (plaintext) copies for 90 days. Henceforth, under this policy you will be required to not delete your WhatsApp messages and other mails.

Businesses are also expected to maintain encrypted and plaintext (unscrambled) copies of all their communication, and share their encryption keys with the government authorities when asked.

The government has invited comments from the public on the policy by Oct. 16.

Judicial custody of Indrani, two other accused extended

A Mumbai court on Monday extended the judicial custody of all three prime accused in Sheena Bora`s murder by a fortnight till October 5.

The accused are Indrani Mukerjea, the victim`s mother, Mukerjea`s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai. Their judicial custody of 14 days ended on Monday.

The case of the three was put up before the Bandra magistrate court via video-conferencing as police could not provide escort in view of the Ganeshotsav celebrations.

The defence and prosecution lawyers were present in the court.

The high-profile murder case was taken away from Mumbai Police and transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation as the Maharashtra government wanted to ensure a free and impartial probe.

Sheena Bora was murdered on April 24, 2012, allegedly by Indrani, Khanna and Rai who disposed off her partly burnt body in the forests in Raigad district.

Lalu dares RSS, BJP with ‘agar mai ka doodh piya hai to…’

LaluRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has sparked a war of words over his statement calling for a review of the reservation system. While some parties like Congress have backed Bhagwat on the issue, several others like Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal United (JDU) have voiced their opinion against any such move.

Some members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also expressed their opinion against any such move, saying there is a lot of discrimination in the society.

Leading the charge against review of reservation system was RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who dared the RSS and the BJP to temper with the quota system, and face the wrath of the Dalit and the backward community.

Taking to Twitter, the former Bihar chief minister said, “The RSS and the BJP may try to make all coordinated attempts to create an environment to end reservation, but 80% Dalit and backward population of this country will give them a strong response.”

Meanwhile, BJP leader Udit Raj also voiced his opinion against the statement of the RSS chief, saying “people who talk about review have not seen atrocities and discrimination”.

“There is lot of discrimination in the society. Review can happen only when the system is changed. People who talk about review have not seen atrocities and discrimination. People don’t treat Dalits with respect, how can there be a review?” said the BJP leader.

The RSS chief had on Sunday said that the reservation has been used for political ends. He suggested setting up of an apolitical committee to examine who needs the facility and for how long.

“Interest groups are formed because we have certain aspirations in democracy. At the same time, we should remember that through interest groups we should not strive to address those aspirations at the cost of others,” he said.

“We should have integral approach of welfare for all. It is sensible to realise that my interest lies in larger national interest. Government also has to be sensitive to these issues that there should not be any agitations for them,” Bhagwat told Sangh mouthpiece “Organiser” and “Panchjanya” in an interview.

He also pitched for constitution of a committee with representatives from the civil society to go into the issue.

Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was alive in China in 1948, indicates declassified file

Freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was ‘alive’ and ‘somewhere in Manchuria, China’ in 1948, one of his trusted aides, Deb Nath Das, had claimed then, according to the declassified files by the West Bengal government.

Among the released dossier, file No. 22 sheds light on intelligence gathered by the Bengal government (office of the deputy commissioner of police), on INA leaders, including Das.

An extract dated August 9, 1948, says: “Deb Nath Das, an ex-INA leader who is actively engaged in anti-Congress propaganda, is preaching in political and party circles that Netaji Subash Chandra Bose is alive and is somewhere in Manchuria, China at present.”

“To rouse the curiosity and even belief of the people, he (Das) says that Netaji told him before the plane-crash that the possibility of a third world war would emerge in the wake of the second world war.”

On August 22, 1945, Tokyo Radio announced the “death” of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in an air crash in Formosa (now Taiwan) on August 18, 1945, en route to Japan.

But the crash theory has been rejected by scores of Bose’s followers and admirers and claims of the revolutionary leader resurfacing continue to intrigue and divide Indians over the years.

Adding to the controversy, the extract further states that Das had asserted that in 1948 Bose was keeping tabs on the international as well as national scenario.

“Das adds that Netaji is watching both the international and national situation, vis-A-vis India, to find out as to which among the foreign powers was her friend or enemy. There is a talk that Deb Nath Das may contest the by-election from south Calcutta constituency of the West Bengal Assembly.”

Das, according to a declassified 1948 confidential diary page of the Calcutta police, was known to give “fiery lectures” against the then Indian government.

“Except for the meetings attended or presided over by Das, in which he always gave fiery lectures against the government of India, nothing else could be known of his anti-Congress activities.”

Hindu woman wants to join Islamic State; NIA alerted

In a shocking case of Islamic State radicalisation in India, a young Hindu woman from Delhi had planned to go Syria to support ISIS but, luckily, her father found out about her plan and sought help of the National Investigation Agency.

The woman, in her mid-20s, had graduated from a premier Delhi University college and went to Australia for post-graduate studies. As per her father, a retired Army Lt Colonel, she was a changed person after her visit Down Under.

The report said that the former Army officer had accidentally stumbled upon evidence – on her computer – about his daughter’s plan to travel to Syria and that she was in touch with an alleged IS recruiter for the same.

The former Army man immediate got in touch with the NIA. The agency brought the Intelligence Bureau into the loop on the matter.

The report claimed that sleuths from the agencies have trying to convince the woman that joining the IS was a bad idea.

The report added that there were two Hindus who were recently deported from the UAE on alleged charges of indulging in IS propaganda. However, the report says their case was different as they had come under the scanner due to their friendship with some youth involved with the Islamic State.

Man buried alive beneath under-construction road in MP

As Indians we may be used to witnessing instances of gross negligence but what happened in Katni in Madhya Pradesh has crossed all limits of the pathetic state of affairs in the country.

In a shocking turn of events, a 45-year-old – allegedly in a drunken state – accidentally slipped into a pit at an under-construction road in Katni district and was buried alive after careless construction workers filled up the space with molten bituminous material and ran a dumper over it to level the stretch.

The matter would have gone unnoticed had the residents of the area not found the man’s arm sticking out from the tarred road. The deceased has been identified as Latori Lal.

As per reports, the workers could not see the man lying the pothole as it was dark – the incident occurred last Friday – and, apparently, did not care to check.

The driver of the dumper and a labourer who had filled the pothole without noticing the man have been arrested.

NDRF rescues two workers trapped in tunnel after 9 days in Himachal Pradesh

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday managed to evacuate two trapped workers after over 200 hours of their ordeal, after a tunnel under construction collapsed here in Himachal Pradesh on September 12. However, the whereabouts of the third worker were not known yet.

In a quick reaction over the success in the tunnel mishap, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said, “Relieved that two workers have been rescued, operation will not stop till the third worker is found.”

“We managed to evacuate Mani Ram and Satish Tomar, who were stuck in the tunnel since September 21. Both are fine and have been taken to the nearby zonal hospital in Bilaspur (town) for examination,” Jaideep Singh, commanding officer of NDRF said.

Rescuers had earlier managed to penetrate the roof of the tunnel and were able to come closer to evacuate two workers stuck in it for over 200 hours in Himachal Pradesh.

The two trapped workers — Mani Ram and Satish Tomar – were in regular touch with the rescuers through a microphone linked with a webcam. They were also provided dry fruits and glucose.

However, the whereabouts of the third worker, Hirdya Ram, are not known yet.

For the past five days, a 50-odd member team comprising engineers, technical staff and geologists drilled a 42-metre vertical shaft through the mountain in its bid to rescue the workers.

A snag in the drilling machine hampered the evacuation throughout Sunday.

Of the 1.2-km proposed traffic tunnel of the Kiratpur-Manali expressway road project, 275 metres was excavated when disaster struck on September 12.

The contract for tunnel laying, involving an outlay of Rs 82 crore, has been assigned to the Chandigarh-based Himalayan Construction Co, three of whose workers, belonging to the hill state, were trapped.

Spread social messages through Ganesh Chaturthi

Welcome the Lord Ganesha-the remover of obstacles, the God of Knowledge and the most revered and loved God of not only the city of Mumbai or Maharashtra but the whole universe! The metro city of Mumbai gears up every year, months before, to welcome and celebrate the biggest festival perhaps of India. Preparations like installing pandals, decorations and installations of idols and many other arrangements begin days before the day of the grand festival. Every year we have been seeing and witnessing to what extent this Ganesh Chaturthi festival is being celebrated in almost every nook and corner of the city. Having experienced the festivity of this great and important festival for decades, I just would like to submit some “Dos and Donts”, in simple terms.  Today due to security threats, police and the security force have to always remain on their toes 24×7.  The environment and other aspects needs to be taken care of. Besides, we are in the midst of facing water shortage and perhaps a drought too. Hence I would suggest that the celebrations on the whole should be on a low key, to be restricted to religious fervour and traditions and not on lavish display of wealth; should be pure devotional in all respects.

It’s very important to restrict the noise levels. Ban film songs blaring through massive sized speakers and psychedelic effects. Especially in the areas where we have hospitals, thick population of civilians; schools and so on. Maintenance of cleanliness must be disciplined at all levels. There should be no pile-up of garbage and other items near the pandals and which would inconvenience the pedestrians and the traffic. Public roads and streets should never be dominated over, by installing huge pandals, electronic and electrical gadgets and so on.  Less said about this the better. Protection of environment is extremely important. Trees must not be cut or destroyed. Display of banners and plastic items, et al must be banned. Avoid wastage of water and eatables.  After the immersions, organisers should ensure to clean the areas including sea-shores and immersion sites.

Every mandal should ensure that they display or show a short film to send good messages which are of use to the society: like “girls education, stop child labour, save the planet and environment, obey traffic rules, say no to corruption and many such worthy causes.  Such messages will certainly have positive effect on the people to tread the right path. Above all the organisers and the people should remain ever alert to prevent any untoward incidents and extend all possible cooperation to the city police personnel and security staff and officers in view of the grave situation the nation faces today.  All the mandals and the citizens too, should make generous and substantial donations to the CM’s Relief/Farmers’ Relief fund etc. Since, this year many Mandals have already taken steps to install big sized and heavily decorated idols etc….next year onwards the focus should be on having the “Eco Ganpati idols” only. Let us pray to the Almighty Lord Ganesha for safe, peaceful, happy, grand and successful Ganeshotsav with all devotion and pure religious fervour.

Maddox Jolie-Pitt all set to enter films

Jolie-PittMaddox, the eldest son of actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, is keen to follow in the steps of his parents to become an actor.

Jolie has reportedly given Maddox, 14, his first speaking role in her upcoming online Netflix drama about the Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia, ‘First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers’.

“Maddox has been desperate to get into acting. This is a dream come true for him. He’s read the book the film’s based on and speaks the language – it’s a perfect fit,” a source close to the actress and director said.

The teenager, who was adopted by Jolie from an orphanage in western Cambodia in 2002, had a non-speaking role in the film featuring Pitt, ‘World War Z’ (2013), which was an apocalyptic action horror film directed by Marc Forster.

Jolie had also hired her son to be an assistant on the set of the film.

‘First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers’ is based on a non-fiction book written by Loung Ung, a Cambodian author and survivor of the Pol Pot regime. It is a personal account of her experiences during the Khmer Rouge years.
