The Indian U-17 Women’s team succumbed to a 1-3 defeat to Sweden at Torremirona Relais in Spain, their first match of the exposure tour for the girls ahead of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup event back at home.

On Monday, Sudha Tirkey (62′) scored the only goal for India after Sweden U-17 girls took a comfortable 3-0 lead through Ida Gramfors (44′) Sara Frigren (52′) and Selma Astrom (54′).

India, however, looked promising at the start as they competed on equal terms in an intense midfield battle that saw winger Anita Kumari get an early shot at the rival goal, which was saved.

Minutes later, Nitu Linda tried her luck to take a shot from the edge of the Swedish penalty area, but was blocked. India earned a free kick in the 19th minute and Anita once again made an attempt at the rival goal, this time a header, but the Swedish custodian Elin Ekmark saved it with ease.

A few minutes later Sweden striker Maja Jarvensivu tried a long ranger, which went over the bar. Both Anita and India goalkeeper Anjali enjoyed a good first half.

The former made a few inroads around the half-hour mark, while the latter made a few worthy saves to keep her side in the game.

Despite the chances created by Thomas Dennerby’s girls, it was Sweden, who got the breakthrough close to halftime when a Sara Frigren’s pass from the corner kick was met by Ida Gramfors and she bulged the back of the net.

Changing over, Swedish girls dominated possession and created chances in front of the Indian goal. In the 47th minute, Sweden doubled their lead scoring one from Frigren’s rebound shot.

Minutes later, Selma Astrom scored the third for the night making most of a Frigren cross. India head coach Dennerby made three changes, bringing on Sudha, Shubhangi and Shilky in place of Lynda Kom, Babina Devi and Varshika as India pressed hard to find the target.

In the 62nd minute, Sudha made her immediate impact – she dribbled past her marker off a Astam long pass and chipped it in to pull one back for India. Nitu Linda almost created a chance out of nowhere, as she closed down on a rival defender to snatch the ball off her feet inside the Sweden penalty area.

However, the Sweden goalkeeper was close at hand, managing to gather the ball. With less than 20 minutes of regulation time left on the clock, Dennerby made more changes, bringing in Naketa, Lavanya and Shailja in place of Kajal, Neha and Kajol Dsouza.

India continued to drive forward but could not score again leaving Sweden to win the match with a 3-1 margin.

FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 is scheduled to be held in India between October 11 and 30. The seventh edition of the biennial youth tournament will be the first-ever FIFA women’s competition to be hosted by India.

Apple won’t have October Event for Macs, IPads launch

American tech giant Apple doesn’t have enough products to hold a dedicated event in October, so it might have decided to launch them with separate press releases instead, suggests renowned analyst Mark Gurman.

According to GSM Arena, the Cupertino-based firm believes that a couple of press releases spaced apart are more effective than a full-blown event at this point in time.

It’s not the first time Apple has chosen to do so as the company has previously unveiled new products with press releases outside the core iPhone line-up.

Also, there aren’t any rumours or teasers of Apple regarding an October event.

Gurman believes that by the end of this year, the tech giant will introduce the M2 and M2 Pro-powered Mac mini, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips and possibly 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros with vanilla M2 chips.

As per GSM Arena, even if Apple introduces new Mac Pros next month, deliveries will likely start next year. The September 7 Apple ‘Far Out’ event, one of the most anticipated tech events of the year, brought new gadgets galore including new iPhones, watches and new AirPods.

The event started with Apple CEO Tim Cook welcoming everyone from the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. Following that, he went straight for the product launches of the night.

The Centre has set a new target of 40 percent reduction in particulate matter concentration in cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) by 2026, updating the earlier goal of 20 to 30 percent reduction by 2024, officials have said.

According to the Union Environment Ministry, 95 of the 131 non-attainment cities covered under the NCAP have witnessed an “overall improvement” in PM10 levels in 2021 as compared to 2017 levels. Twenty cities, including Chennai, Madurai and Nashik, have met the national standards for annual average PM10 concentration (60 microgram per cubic metre).

The acceptable annual standard for PM2.5 is 40 micrograms per cubic metre.

PM2.5 are fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller, and pose the greatest risk to health.

The 132 cities covered under the NCAP did not meet the prescribed national ambient air quality standards for five consecutive years (2011-2015).

“The goal of 20 to 30 percent reduction in PM levels has to be met by 2024. The results under NCAP have been good so far. So, we have decided to update the reduction target to 40 percent by 2026,” an official of the environment ministry said. Under NCAP, city-specific action plans have been prepared which include measures for strengthening the air quality monitoring network, reducing vehicular and industrial emissions, increasing public awareness, etc.

“The cities are also updating their action plans to meet the updated targets,” the official said. Cities that showed overall improvement in PM 10 concentration since 2017 include Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Patna, Nagpur, Pune, Agra, Allahabad, Bareilly, Firozabad, Moradabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Raipur among others.

In Delhi, the PM10 concentration has reduced from 241 micrograms per cubic metre in 2017 to 196 micrograms per cubic metre in 2021.

Police have arrested four activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) from different locations in Maharashtra’s Thane district for alleged anti-national activities, an official said on Tuesday.

The arrests were made on Monday night in a joint operation carried out in the district by local police and crime branch officials, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Laxmikant Patil said.

Two of the activists were nabbed from Mumbra and one each from Kalyan and Bhiwandi towns, he said without elaborating.

The PFI, formed in 2006, claims to strive for a neo-social movement ostensibly for the empowerment of marginalised sections of India, and is often accused by law enforcement agencies of promoting radical Islam In near-simultaneous raids across the length and breadth of the country on September 22, a multi-agency operation spearheaded by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) led to the arrest of 106 PFI activists in 15 states for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested 20 PFI members from different parts of the state in the multi-agency raids.

On Monday, the ATS arrested one more PFI activist from Nanded in Marathwada region.

The ATS on Monday told a court in Mumbai that it wanted to probe the links of five of the 20 people arrested last week with organisations including Al Qaeda and the Islamic State and also investigate the electronic evidence.

The ATS said it has recovered some literature and a book titled ‘Who Killed Karkare’ from one of the accused and seized his laptop and phone.

SC live-streams constitution bench proceedings

SC live-streams constitution bench proceedings 6

In a first, the Supreme Court on Tuesday began live-streaming its constitution bench proceedings.

On September 27, 2018, the then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra had delivered the landmark judgement on the live telecast or webcast of important proceedings in matters of constitutional importance, saying “sunlight is the best disinfectant”.

The proceedings can be accessed at webcast.gov.in/scindia/, said an official.

On Monday, a bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said the top court will soon have its own “platform” to live-stream its proceedings instead of having to use the YouTube.

In a unanimous decision taken at a recent full court meeting headed by the CJI, the apex court decided to live-stream proceedings of all constitution bench hearings from September 27, four years after the path-breaking announcement by Justice Misra.

The apex court may live-stream proceedings through YouTube and later host them on its server, sources had said. People will be able to access the proceedings on their cell phones, laptops, and computers without any hassle.

On August 26, for the first time since its inception, the Supreme Court live-streamed proceedings of a bench headed by then Chief Justice (since retired) N V Ramana through a webcast portal. It was a ceremonial proceeding as Justice Ramana was to demit office that day.

Mumbai NIA court rejects Elgar Parishad accused Varavara Rao’s application to go to Hyderabad for cataract surgery

A special NIA court in Mumbai has rejected Telugu poet and Elgar Parishad accused Varavara Rao’s plea to go to Hyderabad for three months to undergo cataract surgery.

The court rejected the request stating it has to frame charges against the accused within the next three months.

Special NIA judge Rajesh Katariya said the court “is required to frame charges against the accused and decide on the pending discharge application simultaneously within three months from the order dated August 18, 2022. If Rao is permitted to go and stay in Hyderabad for three months, the framing of charges would get prolonged. In such a situation, allowing the application would not be appropriate.”

Rao had also approached the Supreme Court to modify the order granting bail and sought permission to go to Hyderabad for cataract surgery. According to the bail conditions, Rao has to stay in Mumbai till the end of the Elgar Parishad trial, which is yet to begin.

On August 10, the Supreme Court granted bail to Rao on medical grounds. The following week it granted Rao permission to approach the Special NIA Court to undergo his cataract surgery in Hyderabad.

Advocate Niraj Yadav, who appeared on behalf of Rao, stated that the Supreme Court had granted liberty to Rao to file a modification application before the trial court.

Yadav submitted that Rao has been staying in Mumbai since March 2021. He further submitted that the living expenses in Mumbai are very high. Rao had spent Rs 68,000 per month on living expenses in 2021, which has gone up to Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per month.

Yadav further submitted that Rao (82) had incurred about Rs 10 lakh in expenses while staying in Mumbai. He stated that Rao only gets Rs 50,000 per month as a pension from the Telangana government. Rao has to borrow money from others, because of the overheads incurred due to staying in Mumbai.

Rao’s plea stated that he is unable to bear the medical expenses for cataract surgery in Mumbai and that it would be done free of cost for him in Telangana. Moreover, his children would be in a better state to look after him post-surgery on both his eyes, said Rao’s plea.

Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Shetty, appearing for the NIA, opposed the plea, stating that the treatment sought by Rao was available in Mumbai and that through the current application, Rao was only seeking to nullify the conditions imposed by the apex court while granting him medical bail. Shetty submitted that Rao could obtain reimbursement of the treatment charges paid here.

The NIA has claimed that speakers at the Elgar Parishad event organised by front organisations of the CPI (Maoist) at Pune on December 31, 2017, had incited violence at Bhima Koregaon the next day in which one person died and several others were injured.

Five PFI activists have been arrested from the Kottayam and Kollam districts of Kerala for allegedly engaging in violent activities during the state-wide hartal called by the organisation on September 23 pursuant to nation-wide raids on their offices and arrests of their leaders.

Four activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) were arrested from Kottayam on Monday for breaking the glass of a bakery and damaging a KSRTC bus, police said.

From Kollam, a PFI activist was arrested on Monday for allegedly ramming into a police motorbike with his two-wheeler in his bid to escape the clutches of the police personnel.

The police were trying to catch him as he was allegedly intimidating and abusing those present along the Kottiyam-Pallimukku stretch of national highway 66 on September 23, they said.

While trying to escape the police, the accused rammed into the police patrolling bike and sped away without stopping.

The two officers on the bike were seriously injured with one of them still hospitalised, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, arrested from Kollam, has been booked for the offence of attempt to murder and remanded to 14-days judicial custody.

Masked men and miscreants had gone on a rampage in different parts of Kerala during the dawn-to-dusk hartal called by PFI, under the lens for alleged terror activities, and damaged state-run buses and ambulance, injured policemen and commoners, vandalised shops and threatened the public.

The violent incidents affected normal life in many parts of the southern state.

Kerala, where PFI has some strong pockets accounted for the maximum number of 22 arrests, officials said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said 20,000 personnel will be recruited in the state’s police force, with advertisements for the first round of 8,000 posts already issued.

The process for the remaining 12,000 posts will be out soon, he told reporters here.

The state government is keen on strengthening and developing a robust infrastructure for cyber security as per changing times and technology.

Fadnavis also pointed out his government was taking special efforts for 1,641 prisoners in various prisons who have received bail but have not been released because they do not have money to pay the bond.

“There are some technical issues as well as they do not have money to pay for their bail bond. We have intimated some non-governmental organisations in this field to come forward and help these prisoners. Prisons are already crowded,” he said.
