Samajwadi Party opt out of ‘Janata Parivar’ -Congress alliance, to contest Bihar elections alone

Samajwadi-PartyMulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has walked out of the Janata Parivar in Bihar following differences over the number of seats that its leadership wanted to contest in the state Assembly elections scheduled to be held sometime in October and November.

Samajwadi Party, which has a negligible presence in Bihar, had been given five seats by the Janata Dal United-Rashtriya Janata Dal-Congress alliance. Intially the Mulayam led party was not given any seat by the JDU-RJD-Congress alliance and only after Samajwadi party’s Bihar unit raised a hue and cry, it was allotted five seats – two from the RJD quota and three given to the Nationalist Congress Party which has also decided to contest alone.

“Samajwadi Party Parliamentary Board has decided to contest Bihar elections independently. Talks are on with other parties. When we were in alliance, the bigger parties in the alliance should have consulted the smaller parties before deciding on seats,” said senior leader Ram Gopal Yadav.

“We don’t want to speculate and if need be, we will speak to some other parties for support but it’s not on the table as of now,” added Ram Gopal Yadav.

Mulayam’s party was upset at being sidelined. Samajwadi Party leaders said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad had accommodated Congress at their cost. Mulayam hads skipped the Swabhiman Rally organized in Patna on August 30 by the JDU-RJD-Congress Mahagathbandhan and sent Shivpal Singh Yadav for the same.

JDU spokesperson KC Tyagi called Samajwadi Party walking out of the Janat parivar “an unfortunate incident” while RJD’s Manoj Jha, too, said that it could have been avoided.

Both JDU and RJD are Bihar based parties and were rivals for almost two decades but they came together following the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance’s superlative show in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The NDA won 31 out of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar completely decimating its rivals.

Rama Sene chief held in Mangaluru in Kalburgi murder case

The chief of a local fringe right wing outfit was detained on Thursday by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in connection with the murder of progressive Kannada scholar and researcher Prof MM Kalburgi at Dharwad on August 30, police said.

Prasad Attavar, head of Rama Sene, who had been detained for interrogation, has been handed over to Bunder police station, police said, as they remained clueless on the killers of Kalburgi even four days after the brutal murder.

A few messages related to Kalburgi were being circulated in the social media carrying Attavar’s photo and police wanted to make sure whether they were posted by him or his photo was used to spread the messages.

Attavar, who was a member of Sri Rama Sene led by Pramod Muthalik till 2009, had later left the outfit and formed the Rama Sene.

Sri Ram Sene had gained notoriety for moral policing in Dakshina Kannada district. Attack on some young men and women at a pub here in January 2009 alleging “immoral activities” was blamed on the outfit.

Bantwal police had on August 31 arrested Bhuvith Shetty, the co-convenor of the Bajrang Dal unit there for posting a tweet justifying the murder of Kalburgi and warning that scholar K S Bhagwan, another rationalist free-thinker, would be their next target.

Shetty, who later withdrew his remarks from Twitter, was released on bail.

Kalburgi was shot dead at his residence in Dharwad by unidentified assailants, an incident which had evoked nationwide protest. Police had released sketches of the suspects.

Karnataka government has decided to hand over the case to CBI for probe. The state CID would investigate till the central agency takes over the case.

Boy compares mom with Indrani, writes ‘she likes having sex with many men’

Sheena Bora-Indrani Mukerjea high-profile case has become a talk of the town. But, what many have failed to realise is the wrong imprints it’s leaving on the psyche of innocent children who are exposed to such news daily.

Recently, a 7th standard boy in Delhi’s private school was caught passing a note to his classmates which read: “I am an illegitimate child. My mother is like Indrani Mukerjea. She likes having sex with many men.” as per various reports.

When the teachers caught hold of the note, they were shocked and bewildered.

Later, the matter was taken up with the principal who summoned the boy’s parents and held discussion with them. The child was then suspended and is now undergoing counseling.

Whenever a new detail emerges in Sheena Bora murder mystery, the case gets murkier. Moreover, every news channel and newspaper is giving events by events coverage to the case. What makes it more disturbing is the fact that Indrani’s background and her past relationships are being given more importance over the case proceedings.

As every school advices its students to make newspaper reading a daily habit, it is hard to ignore such content. The children who are exposed to such news do not have the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

OROP our right, want periodic revision of pension: Military veterans

As the talks between government and military veterans over the ‘One Rank, One Pension’ scheme continue, representatives of the veterans on Thursday said that they are asking for their ‘right’ and it shouldn’t be described as a bonanza or demand.

Addressing the media at Jantar Mantar, the protesting ex-servicemen said they wanted periodic revision of pension.

“We are not asking for any three percent increment. There is no such thing as increment,” Captain Kaul said.

“What we have asked for is a periodic review of pension so that at no stage the definition of OROP as accepted by parliament is violated even by a letter.”

The veterans stated that the date for implementation for OROP should be April 2014.

They further accused the government of not sticking to its stand.

Group Capt (Retd) VK Gandhi said that not a single government representative has come forward and assured a single aspect that would be implemented. They accused the government of frequently changing its stand on the contentious issue.

Captain Kaul said varying figures of supposed government expenditure were being floated “by people who do not know what they are talking about”.

The veterans also rejected the reports that they have demanded yearly or monthly increments.

While implementing the pension scheme, the government should ensure that a junior officer doesn’t get more pension than his senior, the veterans noted.

Thursday is the 81st day of protest by ex-sevicemen in the national capital. Thirteen retired soldiers are on indefinite hunger strike. Relay hunger strikes are taking place in some 60 towns and cities.

There are around 24 lakh ex-servicemen in India and around 6.5 lakh widows who will benefit if OROP is implemented.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had on Monday had virtually ruled out annual revision of pension as demanded by agitating ex-servicemen under OROP but said the government will safeguard interests of soldiers retiring at an early age through higher pensions.

OROP scheme has been a long-standing demand of nearly three-million ex-servicemen and war widows in the country. It seeks to ensure that a uniform pension is paid to defence personnel, who retire at the same rank with the same length of service irrespective of their date of retirement.

Bandra Fair attracts large number of visitors

The Basilica of ‘Our Lady of the Mount’ in Bandra (West) stands on a hillock overlooking the Arabian Sea. It draws over ten lakhs pilgrims annually. During the entire Bandra fair week, over six lakhs people visit the shrine. The shrine attracts people of all faiths and communities all throughout the year. Every year in September, the feast of ‘Our Lady of the Mount’ is celebrated on the Sunday following September 8 till the next Sunday. It is a weeklong fair that attracts lakhs and lakhs of people from all over Mumbai and its suburbs. The weeklong fair will commence this year from September 13 and will conclude on September 20.

During the entire Bandra fair week, all roads and houses in Bandra (West) are decorated with colourful buntings. Many residents even put up stalls selling religious items, black roasted channas (grams) and various kinds of Goan and Mangalorean sweets. The term, Bandra fair refers to the celebrations that are connected with the annual feast of ‘Our Lady of the Mount’ on September 8, known as the ‘Feast of the Nativity (birth) of the Blessed Virgin Mary’. It becomes an important historical event, because with the birth of Mary, comes ‘the dawn of our salvation’, since Mary’s son, Jesus Christ, would be the Saviour of the world. This had already been predicated by many of the Old Testament prophets. If Mary had not consented to the Heavenly Father to be the Mother of Jesus Christ, to bear Him in her womb, then there would have been no redemption and no salvation for mankind. Mary’s answer of saying ‘yes’ to the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation ensured mankind’s deliverance from sin. We do not know the exact date when Mother Mary was born and so September 8th has been fixed by tradition to be her birthday.

Music makes one’s mood merrier. Daily programmes are announced which add to the week-long activities. But it is a pity that a lot of newcomers who have taken accommodation in Bandra (West) have been requesting the Police Commissioner to discontinue the weeklong fair which has been going on since the last 450 years. I would like to inform these people that if they cannot tolerate the crowd and the noise, to better leave Bandra and find accommodation somewhere else. As a former resident of Bandra (West), now residing in Dombivili, I enjoyed the fair when I was a little boy. Even now, every year, I take my wife Shirley and daughter Sweta to the fair. In fact, we spend the entire day enjoying ourselves. We also visit the homes of our relatives and friends residing along the fair area and we are welcomed by these people with open arms.

In the year, 1700, according to historians, the statue of the Virgin Mary was disfigured by the Arab pirates and the right hand of the statue was broken in order to get hold of a gold lined object in her hand, after which it (the statue) was thrown into the Arabian Sea. According to a legend, a Hindu fisherman dreamt that he would soon find a statue of Mother Mary in the sea and his dream came true a few months later.
