Who will come to power in Bihar?

Bihar elections are just round the corner but BJP is yet to declare its chief ministerial candidate. Its allies are also mounting pressure, BJP indicated that it will finalise seat-sharing deal with them for the Bihar Assembly polls by the first week of September. Sources say just like Maharashtra BJP is planning to go solo, if seat sharing with their alliances fails. Narendra Modi’s rallies had set off a “storm of change” in the state which Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his foe-turned-ally Lalu Prasad have ruled for 25 years between them, the saffron party said over 60 lakh people had attended more than 50,000 public meetings organised by it so far. Unlike the last two polls when BJP was in a settled tie-up with Kumar-led JD(U) with both parties having few differences, this time its allies have been piling pressure for a larger share of 243 seats going to the polls than it is likely to concede. Ram Vilas Paswan-led LJP, Upendra Kushwaha-led RLSP and Jitan Ram Manjhi-led HAM are fighting the assembly polls in alliance with BJP for the first time.

The main cut throat competition will be between Janta Parivar (JDU+RJD) and BJP. Other parties will play a spindle in forming alliances. Lalu proved himself smart by supporting JDU because he knows he will definitely lose the game if he goes alone. The illusion of Modi waves have blown down to a larger extent, Bihar doesn’t vote on sentiments and after Delhi elections many equations have changed for the party. Nitish had worked for Bihar. It was he who brought safety, strength, status and growth of Bihar. After Lalu’s era, it was not easy to get Bihar on track. Nitish Kumar has more votebank and faith of the common man even after Jitaram Manjhi’s debacle as CM. As Chief Minister, he gained popularity by initiating a series of developmental and constructive activities including building of long-delayed bridges, re-laying roads that had ceased to exist, appointing over 100,000 school teachers, ensuring that doctors worked in primary health centers, and keeping crime in check. Nitish Kumar belongs to a socialist class of politicians. He learnt the lessons of politics under the tutelage of stalwarts Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, S N Sinha, Karpuri Thakur and V. P. Singh. Nitish Kumar again assumed office of Chief Minister of Bihar on 22 February 2015. Bihar Legislative Assembly election, 2015 is considered as the toughest election for him. He is campaigning aggressively for Bihar elections after the formation of Janata Parivar.

Nitish has long history of socialist politics; he participated in Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement along with Anand Mohan Singh between 1974 and 1977, and was close to Satyendra Narayan Sinha, a prominent leader of that time. Once upon a time, he was a face of Bihar politics when BJP and JDU were in alliance and he was much appreciated by many. Although in Lok Sabha elections JDU was wiped off by BJP, it will be really very interesting to see the ‘Ghamasan’ between Janata Parivar and BJP.

Caste is everything (amongst the masses) in Bihar, approximately, ninety per cent of the voting here is based on caste. This time also votes will be split to a largest extent on caste base. Most of the educated Bihari voters are non-resident; either they stay in Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata. They are earning their livelihood somewhere else, and it is highly unlikely that they would vote. In this election, Nitish Kumar is solely dependent on caste card. Without support of RJD his survival in Bihar politics is difficult. BJP is riding on Modi’s wave in this poll. From 90’s, Bihar politics is defined by castes. This time, it’s a personal war between two leaders; CM Nitish Kumar versus PM Narendra Modi. If Kumar wins, it will open gates of corruption for RJD MLAs who are out of office for almost a decade. This factor is very important in this analysis because these are the guys who could actually break the caste based voting pattern, but since they won’t participate, their opinion does not matter at all in reality. As I earlier said most of the educated Biharis are staying outside and voting in Bihar is pretty less, hence it is very much insignificant to bring out any difference in the outcome. Moreover, RSS is supporting BJP in Bihar and upper caste votes can completely go in the party’s favour.

Cash and liquor for votes still works in Bihar. And it happens pretty openly. Probably it happens everywhere, but I am certain that it happens here in every election. I don’t know how much difference it actually makes.

For some reason or the other, development doesn’t work here in elections. Apart from a few urban areas like Patna, people are hardly concerned about anything related to development. The one who is residing in Bihar continues to do so because some or the other reasons, else know one wants to stay here. Some had their lands and farms here and hence couldn’t leave. Some didn’t have proper education. Some had to stay here because of their government jobs. Some had to stay because their ancestors have left a lot of immovable property here. Ninety nine per cent people, if they had an opportunity, will leave this place.

When Peter Mukherjea met and fell madly in love with Indrani

Peter-MukherjeaEven as the Sheena Bora murder case is taking the country by storm, TV personality, columnist and actor among other things Suhel Seth has revealed that how he met Indrani and how Peter fell in love with her.

Writing a column in The Telegraph, Seth writes that he met Indrani at a bar in Mumbai. Indrani had come to the place with Alyque Padamsee.

Interestingly, that was also Peter’s first meeting with Indrani. At that time the former Star group CEO had another girlfriend.

Seth writes that there was ‘a certain charm to Indrani’ and says that Peter was completely smitten by Indrani.

He also says that Indrani was always “very driven and deeply ambitious” and adds, “The events of the last few days have been shocking to say the least. I, for one, cannot imagine that she did have a family which we knew nothing of.”

“Indrani mentioned her husband and her daughter Vidhie, saying she and her husband were separated,” he says, adding, “So smitten was Peter by her that he left his girlfriend Sapna behind for Sumantra (another friend) and me to drop and went off with Indrani,” says Seth.

Seth then writes that called Indrani from Delhi and inquired about her but then soon he got a call from Peter saying he was very serious about Indrani and that he was thinking of marrying her, “so I should perhaps see her in a different light. From that moment on, I did.”

Seth writes the following in The Telegraph – “Peter and she then started seeing each other seriously and about three months later Peter called to say Indrani and he were getting married. The wedding was in their home at Pochkanwallah Road, a very, very small affair. I didn’t see anyone from Indrani’s family though, of course, Vidhie, her daughter, was there.”

Rest of the column in by Seth goes as follows:

Post Peter’s departure from STAR, he and Indrani began their media venture INX and during those years, with my travels and theirs, we didn’t remain as much in touch as we used to. We would meet very infrequently and I noticed how loving and affectionate Peter was towards Indrani’s daughter.

Indrani, in the meanwhile, had morphed from this Calcutta girl to the Grand Dame of Bombay in her new avatar as a media tycoon. It was a few years later that both Indrani and Peter called to tell me they were selling INX and moving to the UK. They then moved to Bristol where their daughter Vidhie was also studying.

About three years ago, Indrani called me to say she and Peter were visiting Bombay and would I care to have dinner with them. I was in New York and told them I would catch up with them in London and/ or Bristol. I then met the two of them some months later in London where I was delivering a speech, post which we went out for drinks and dinner. That was the last I saw them.

Indrani had plotted to kill her son and Sheena’s brother Mikhail Bora too, say sources

Mikhail-BoraNot just Sheena Bora, TV tycoon Peter Mukherjee’s wife Indrani had plans to murder her son Mikhail Bora too, say sources. Indrani had reportedly asked Mikhail to come to Mumbai, but he had refused.

The plot to kill Mikhail was deduced by police while they were questioning Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani’s previous husband and second accused in the case.

A Kolkata court has reserved its order on a transit remand to move Sanjeev Khanna to Mumbai. Sanjeev has applied for bail but police are seeking 5 days custody. Khanna has so far not confessed to killing Sheena.

Police sources say that Khanna was in touch with Indrani despite their divorce. He has told police that he wanted Indrani and his daughter back in his life. He has claimed that he had always known Sheena as Indrani’s sister, not her daughter.

Confirming the same, Mikhail said, “She asked me to come to Kolkata but I denied. She told she’ll take care of my grandparents and I should move to Kolkata where she will get me a job and help me settle there, but my instinct told me not to and I denied. She threatened of cutting out funds for my grandparents if I did not comply.”

Police sources claim that there was a plot to kill Mikhail. However, Mikhail claims that he never met Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjiv Khanna who has also been arrested for his alleged role in Sheena’s murder.

While he did not speak much about the details, he said that he has much more information but will reveal it at an appropriate time. I have photographic evidence of Sheena, Indrani, Peter and Rahul. I’m willing to hand it over to police when they contact me. She was my elder sister, I want justice.

It is being said that Mikhail could have been a target as he kept asking Indrani about Sheena’s whereabouts. “Indrani knows the motive of killing Sheena. There could be multiple reasons, there might also be a property issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, Peter Mukherjea’s son Rahul, who was questioned on Wednesday is being quizzed by the Mumbai Police again on Thursday.

Sources say that during his questioning, he revealed that he was the last person to meet Sheena on April 24, 2012. Rahul had reportedly been in a relationship with the deceased.

He added that Sheena went to meet Indrani who was with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and their driver. However, he said that he tried speaking to Sheena and tried calling on her number several times, but couldn’t get through her phone. He also said that he had filed the missing person’s complaint about Sheena but it was ignored.

Rahul also said he received a text from Sheena’s mobile two days later saying she wants to end the relationship and added that his repeated attempts to contact her had failed.

‘Super 30’ founder, Maharashtra CM discuss educating underprivileged

Super-30‘Super 30’ founder and mathematician Anand Kumar met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss ways of imparting quality education to students from poor and underprivileged sections in the state.

Anand Kumar said that Fadnavis was quite appreciative of the Super 30 initiative and expressed his desire for something on the same lines to help needy students.

Fadnavis told Kumar at the meeting on Tuesday that the initiative is a great way of helping poor join the mainstream and if he plans an expansion of Super 30 in Maharashtra, the government would extend all possible help in this regard. Anand Kumar said the meeting was good and revolved around education.

“I will see how I can help. I am always ready for the cause of poor, as talent is everywhere. It just needs to be tapped with right opportunity,” he added.

Patna-based ‘Super 30’ has groomed more than 300 students who have qualified for the coveted IITs ever since Kumar launched the initiative in 2002.

Under the programme, 30 students from extremely poor families are trained free of cost to crack JEE to secure admission to IITs. The initiative had made its way to the list of ‘Best of Asia – 2010’, prepared by Time magazine of the US.

Newsweek Magazine had also taken note of the initiative and included his school in the list of four most innovative schools in the world.

Government sanctions Rs. 35,400 crore for four metro lines

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis sanctioned Rs. 35,400 crore for the development of four metro lines.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is developing four lines including 40-km Dahisar-Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro-2 corridor, 40-km Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor via Wadala GPO and R.A.Kidwai Marg, 27-km Dahisar-Andheri-Bandra Metro-5 corridor and 11-km Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road Metro-6 line.

The government has approved Rs 12,000 crore for two lines Dahisar-Mankhurd and Wadala-Kasarvadavali, while Rs 8,100 crore has been sanctioned for Dahisar-E-Andheri-E-Bandra-E line and Rs 3,300 crore for the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road corridor, MMRDA said in a statement issued here.

During the 138th annual meeting of MMRDA held today, Fadnavis also accepted two detailed project reports one for the 16.5-km Andheri-E to Dahisar-E Metro corridor and the other for 18.6-km Dahisar to D.N.Nagar Metro corridor prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and has recommended these two corridors estimated at Rs 4,737 crore and Rs 4,994 crore, respectively for Centre’s approval, it added.

The town planning authority has also recommended to the Centre to allow raising of funds from various financial institutions such as World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency and other national and international financial institutions for the projects.

Meanwhile, MMRDA also gave administrative approval of Rs. 743.73 crore to be used for the construction of three elevated roads to clear traffic jams at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Santacruz-Chembur junctions.

The 1.3-km elevated road running from MTNL junction to LBS Flyover and the 3.45-km elevated road from Kurla (Kapadia Nagar) to Vakola near Western Express Highway (Rs. 480.63 crore) will help clear SCLR junction.

It has also approved Rs. 1,089 crore for development of Kalyan Growth Centre.

Rise in Muslim numbers due to ‘politics of religion’: Sena

The just-released Census figures are “disturbing” and the rise in the Muslim population is because of “politics of religion”, the Shiv Sena has said.

The party, a constituent of the NDA governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre, also said the country is still a Hindu nation that has the “poison of secularism” in it.

“There is no need for active Hindutva forces to go gung ho about the Census figures that have been released. Though these figures are disturbing, we are still ready to take them in a positive way. Counting the number of Hindus living in India today, the country is still a Hindu nation that still has the poison of secularism in it,” the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece, ‘Saamana’.

“Why is the population of Muslims increasing? If one thinks about it, one will know there is politics of religion behind it. Certain forces have already started thinking about Islamisation of the country and thereby to bring the Mughal rule back. We will not be surprised, if, in the next 50 years, Mughal rule returns to the country riding on the secularism bogie,” it said.

It further asked 96 crore Hindus to unite and counter these (hostile) “forces” and said that activities taking place in “masjids and madrasas” should be stopped.

“Muslim population is increasing because there are no stringent rules of family planning. One man can have four wives and raise twenty-five children. If Hindus feel that this needs to be stopped, they need to use the might of their numbers to force the government to do so,” it said.

It further said that vote-bank politics needed to stop to ensure that Muslim youths get proper education and good jobs.

“Muslims today are seeing the condition of Pakistan. They should now come together with Hindus for the cause of development. They should not look at Hindus as a religion but as an Indian culture and bow before the motherland,” Sena said.

Does obscenity offence stand against Radhe Maa? HC asks police

The Bombay High Court today sought to know if the offence of indecency and obscenity, as prescribed under the Bombay Police Act, is made out against self-styled godwoman Radhe Maa.

The query was made by the division bench of justices V M Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi, hearing a PIL filed by advocate Falguni Brahmbhatt seeking an FIR against Radhe Maa on charges of obscenity, cheating and hurting religious sentiments.

Brahmbhatt moved the court after suburban Borivali police allegedly failed to take action on her complaint.

The controversial ‘godwoman’ had opposed the petition and her lawyers claimed that all sermons are given inside a room and hence, it cannot amount to indecent or obscene behaviour in public.

“Does the offence of indecency and obscenity under section 110 of the Bombay Police Act stand against her (Radhe Maa) as she (Radhe Maa) claims that it happened inside four walls?” the high court asked.

The court had last week directed the city police to file an affidavit stating what steps they have taken regarding the complaints received against Radhe Maa.

The police today sought further time of two weeks to file their affidavit.

The court, however, granted police only one week and said no further time would be granted.

Earlier, Radhe Maa had been in controversy after a 32- year-old woman on August 5 lodged a complaint with suburban Kandivali police alleging that she had instigated her in-laws, who are her followers for many years, to demand dowry.

The Kandivali police later summoned Radhe Maa and six others in connection with the case, following which she had appeared before the police.

HC to hear Baig’s death confirmation petition

The Bombay High Court will commence hearing from tomorrow on a petition filed by Maharashtra government seeking confirmation of the death penalty given to Himayat Baig, the lone convict in the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune.

A sessions court in Pune had in April 2013 convicted and sentenced Baig to death for carrying out the blast at the famous German Bakery in Pune’s upmarket Koregaon Park in February 2010, in which 17 people were killed and and 58 injured, including foreign nationals.

While the death confirmation petition was filed by Maharashtra government in the High Court, Baig also filed an appeal challenging his conviction and claiming that he has been implicated by the prosecution.

A division bench of Justices N H Patil and S B Shukre said they will start hearing the petitions tomorrow. The court directed police authorities to produce Baig before it tomorrow. Baig is now lodged in a Nagpur prison.

After the petitions were filed in the High Court, former journalist Ashish Khetan filed a Public Interest Litigation against the conviction.

He claimed that the “ATS deliberately created bogus evidence, extracted false confessions by the most inhuman torture, planted explosives in the houses of the accused and thus implicated an innocent Muslim youth.

Police may take statement of ex-Home Secy on Dawood Ibrahim: Maha CM

Mumbai Police will take a statement of BJP MP and former Home Secretary R K Singh on his claim about an alleged botched up operation to go after underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Thursday.

“Mumbai Police will take a statement of former Home Secretary R K Singh and will take the investigation further,” he said after a meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Chief Minister had on Wednesday said that he would order a probe into the matter if the charges are substantiated.

“It’s a very serious allegation and, if substantiated, we will hold an inquiry,” he had said.

In an interview to a TV channel, the former Home Secretary had talked about a botched operation to target Dawood. However, Singh had made it clear that he cannot say it was confirmed and that he does not have any evidence.

“A group was being trained to target Dawood but he had people in Mumbai Police on his ‘pay roll’ who were alerted. Mumbai Police came saying there is a warrant against them. But I cannot say it is confirmed. I have just heard…I don’t have evidence,” Singh had said.

Singh, a BJP Lok Sabha member now, had claimed that India had planned a covert operation to target Dawood which was launched when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister but it was compromised by some corrupt elements in Mumbai Police.

Could Peter Mukherjea also be involved?

Known for holding strong opinions, author-cum-sociallite Shobha De on Thursday reacted to the mysterious murder case of Sheena Bora and said that Indrani Mukherjea scandal has shaken friends of the power couple to the core.

De took to Twitter and wrote: “Shocked. Disturbed. Aghast. Indrani Mukherjea scandal has shaken friends of the power couple to the core! Murder most foul.”

She further asked if Indrani’s husband Peter Mukherjea was completely in the clear.

“… and Peter is completely innocent? Ignorant? Both????? (sic)” she wrote.
