Parineeti Chopra being considered for ‘Premam’ Telugu remake

ParinitiBollywood actress Parineeti Chopra is in talks to star in the Telugu remake of Malayalam blockbuster ‘Premam’.

“We are in talks with Parineeti. Since she has a project with Farah Khan, she’s finding it difficult to allocate dates. Nothing is yet to be confirmed,” film’s director Chandoo Mondeti said.

Chandoo also said they’re in talks with actress Disha Patani to play one of the leads in the yet-untitled remake, which will also feature Akkineni Naga Chaitanya in the lead.

“Anupama from the original is most likely to reprise her own role in the remake. We are also in talks with her,” he said.

‘Premam’, which has emerged as the biggest hit in the history of Malayalam industry, is the coming of age tale of the protagonist at different stages in his life.

The remake will be produced by S. Radha Krishna of Haarika and Hassine Creations banner. It’s expected to go on floors later this year.

Varun Dhawan helped me to perform well in ‘Dilwale’: Kriti Sanon

Kriti-SanonActress Kriti Sanon is yet to shoot the final leg of the upcoming film “Dilwale” but the newcomer gave full credit to her co-star Varun Dhawan for helping her to give her best shot.

The 25-year-old actress, who is paired opposite Varun in the Rohit Sheet-directed film, said Varun’s infectious energy inspired her.

“He has a great energy and I feel that’s very important for an artist. I don’t know where he gets it from. When your co-star has that kind of energy it transfers to you as well. And if he is a good actor it helps you to perform well,” said Kriti.

The “Heropanti” star feels Varun is one of those actors who takes a lot of interest in the process of filmmaking.

“Varun is a lot of fun to work with. He is a great actor himself. He is someone, who is very passionate about films and filmmaking. He thinks a lot when it comes to a scene. And he is a die-hard filmy,” she said.

The film, which reunites Bollywood’s one of the most popular leading pair Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol after a gap of five years, has so far been shot in Goa and Buglaria.

The Delhi-based actress, who is yet to shoot with Shah Rukh and Kajol, recalled the moment when the “Chennai Express” star came to Goa to meet them.

“He is very warm. You don’t need to break the ice with him. He comes and meets everyone. He takes care of you and makes you comfortable,” she said.

Kriti made her acting debut in 2014 with Sukumar’s Telugu film “1: Nenokkadine”, a psychological thriller and later that year, she made her Hindi cinema foray with Sabbir Khan’s action-romance film “Heropanti”.

Katrina Kaif would have turned ‘clown’ for Yash Chopra

KatActress Katrina Kaif, who has worked with the best of directors and actors in the industry, chooses her movies after analysing both the director and script, but when it comes to the Yash Chopra banner, she would have agreed to do a film even if she was dressed as a clown.

“It is a combination of the script and the director, when it comes to picking my movies. There have been cases…like in the case of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, it was Mr. Yash Chopra’s film and I really did not say can I have the script…for me it was a life-long dream to work with him, so I would have done the film even if he was dressing me as a clown,” Katrina said.

“You have that much trust in certain directors but mostly I think an actor does get a lot of confidence from the director. But I believe most actors go by the story of the film,” she added.

The “Bang Bang” actress believes in looking at a movie from the perspective of the audience.

“I think that if I was the audience, would I like to see this film? I try not to be too self-obsessed or too narcissistic about my choices. I look at the film largely and say that if I was the audience, on a Friday morning would I want to sit and see this film?,” Katrina explained.

Katrina, who has played the role of an ex-RAW agent in “Phantom”, shared that she was already trained to look physically agile, thanks to movies like “Dhoom 3” and “Ek tha Tiger”.

“To play such a role you need to be a physically adept person for doing action. Look agile and to look comfortable with a gun, to be able to do decent amount of action and physical combat and for all of which I think I was fortunate to have had already the experience during ‘Dhoom 3’, ‘Ek tha Tiger’,” she said.

“I was very comfortable with the action sequences, there was nothing that made me feel that ‘I am not upto doing this’. So everything will look very real,” Katrina added about her action-packed role in the film.

Directed by Kabir Khan, “Phantom” is set in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and global terrorism. It will release on August 28.

Dalal Street bleeds

The benchmark Sensex crashed by 1,624.51 points as investors lost nearly Rs 7 lakh crore in a single session.

Sensex-dropsIt was a ‘Black Monday’ for stock markets the world over as billions of dollars of money was lost in a brutal carnage of madness on all stock exchanges of the world. Jeejeebhoy Towers was no exception and it was bloodbath at Dalal Street as Indian stock markets saw one of its worst ever days in its trading history. The benchmark Sensex Monday crashed by 1,624.51 points as investors lost nearly Rs 7 lakh crore in a single session amid concerns about slowdown in China, the world’s second largest economy. The intra-day fall was even larger at 1,741.35 points — the third biggest ever and highest in over seven years. Turmoil in the Chinese markets and the currency war that is being witnessed has spilled to most economies of the world and India too witnessed panic selling at the moment.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government and RBI were watching the situation and hoped that things will stabilise once the transient impact is over. He also laid emphasis on strengthening the domestic market to deal with the impact of global developments.
Jaitley said, “There has been for the last few days a great amount of turbulence which was being caused in the global markets. Obviously, that turbulence has had impact on Indian market itself. The factors responsible for this are entirely external. There is not a single domestic factor in India which has either contributed to it or added to it.”

RBI head Raghuram Rajan tried to allay fears saying the country has strong macroeconomic fundamentals and sufficient forex reserves to contain volatility. He said, “I just want to indicate that we have plenty of reserves which was USD 355 billion (at the last count), plus USD 25 billion that exist because some of our forward sales. We have got USD 380 billion to play with.”

S.N. Kabra, a reader said,India has one of the largest democracies and economies of the world apart from having a large chunk of its population under the age of 35. The ‘Make in India’  idiom if put to reality can boost our economy multi-fold and let us all boycott foreign goods wherever we can to give a boost to the manufacturing and service sector of our country. When the going gets tough the tough gets going and I am sure this short term pain in our stock markets and economy would be overturned in the months to come. It is all a game of patience and only the brave hearts with a medium to short term outlook should be buying stocks at the moment!”

“Don’t think there is a bubble in the stock markets and the fall has been steep because stocks had gone up rapidly after the Modi government came to power. This is all price mechanism in a market where ups and downs are fairly common. Investors should keep their nerves and be invested in quality companies for a long time horizon to make a booty in the markets!” he added.

The BSE’s 30-share index closed the day at 25,741.56 points, down 5.94 percent (1624.51 points), as stocks across all sectors including energy, banking, auto, IT, infrastructure and real estate saw massive selling as investors turned jittery amid a global carnage.
The broader 50-share NSE Nifty too witnessed heavy selling pressure and plunged by 490.95 points to 7,809.00.

Asian markets were also in deep red with Shanghai shares closing more than 8 percent down, while European shares were also down close to 3 percent in their early trade.

Onion prices to touch Rs. 100 per kg soon?

OnionRising onion prices over the past few weeks are giving a hard time to consumers. Stockists are making the most out of the situation.

Despite the government increasing the minimum export price (MEP) and allowing imports to raise domestic supply, the onion prices are showing no sign of cooling off.

The prices of onion have shoot upto Rs. 80 per kg in Delhi, prices of pulses have also gone up considerably in the past three weeks. It is being said that the retail price may touch to Rs. 100 per kg or even more as supply is deficient and farmers in Maharashtra are waiting for rain to sow their late kharif crop.

The average price at Lasalgaon in Maharashtra’s Nashik district rose to Rs. 57 a kg on Saturday, breaking the previous record of Rs. 55 hit in September 2013.

To improve supply to markets by discouraging its exports, the government on Saturday increased the MEP of onions to $700/tonne.

The shortfall has primarily been on account of adverse weather conditions, including unseasonal rains which have impacted both the standing and harvested crop at major producing centres, it added.

BMC, Sena-BJP extorting money from Mumbai hawkers: Sanjay Nirupam

SanjayMumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam on Monday alleged that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials and leaders of Shiv Sena-BJP, ruling the city civic body, were hand in glove in extorting money from city hawkers.

Addressing a press conference, Nirupam said as per a survey by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), there is illegal recovery of Rs. 300 to Rs. 400 crore from hawkers in Mumbai every month.

“High ranking officials and Sena-BJP leaders are also involved and this is the reason why BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta is not implementing the Hawkers’ Regulation and Protection Act passed by the UPA government in 2014,” Nirupam alleged.

“I had filed a PIL in Bombay High Court in this matter, to which, the court ruled on August 12 that there should be no action against hawkers if the process of providing them licences has not completed,” Nirupam said adding that the court has directed to set up a special committee for survey of hawkers and providing them licences.

When contacted, BMC officials were unavailable for comments.

As of now, about 23 lakh hawkers have been given licences to do business, Nirupam said adding that there are 2.5 lakh hawkers in the city. “Legally, about 3.5 lakh hawkers can be given licences,” he said.

The Congress leader said he has written to Mehta and Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria saying that if court orders are violated, he would take legal action against the BMC chief.

Earlier, Nirupam chaired a meeting of Mumbai Congress to discuss the high electricity bills of Mumbaikars. He said the city unit would protest against the power companies from next month. However, senior leaders stayed away from the meeting.

Only two of the five sitting MLAs, Aslam Sheikh and Amin Patel and one former MP Eknath Gaikwad, attended the meeting.

Maharashtra’s ‘Mountain Man’ built 40km roads in 57 years

From Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra comes the story of another ‘Mountain Man’, who like the more famous Dashrath Manjhi, took on the task of cutting hills to build roads.

The 84-year-old Rajaram Bhapkar, a former teacher at Gundegaon village in Ahmednagar district, has cut through seven hills in last 57 years to make 40-km roads and is a respected across the region for his feat.

Bhapkar, known affectionately as ‘Bhapkar Guruji’, looks a simple villager, clad in a white shirt and pajama and sporting a ‘Gandhi’ cap. However, beneath that simplicity lies a steely resolve, which moved the mountains, literally.

“At the time of Independence, there was not even a ‘paywat’ (walking trail) connecting Gundegaon to adjoining village,” Bhapkar, who has studied till seventh standard in Modi language, said.

When Bhapkar, who worked in zilla parishad school between 1957 to 1991, was working at Kolegaon, people from his villages had to cross three villages to reach there.

Bhapkar remembers asking government authorities to build a road cutting across the 700 meter high Santosha hill.

With no help forthcoming, he embarked on a journey of grit and determination, which 57 years later would result in seven roads, altogether 40km long, linking his village to the adjoining villages.

Earlier, the route to Kolegaon via Deulgaon was 29km long. The distance became just 10km after Bhapkar, through sheer grit, cut through the hill and made a kuchcha road.

He paid wages from his pocket to those who accompanied him in the road work.

“I used to spend half my salary on their wages,” Not a single rupee from the government has been spent on the road work,” he adds.

“In 1968 not even a cycle could pass through the earlier walking trail. Now, big vehicles ply on this road,” a villager said.

He completed the road in 1997.

Maha government to hold cabinet meet in Marathwada

Maharashtra government will conduct its cabinet meeting in Marathwada next month to discuss a long-term solution for the drought situation.

“We will conduct the state cabinet meeting in Marathwada in September and together we will discuss about a long-term solution for drought situation,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

Fadnavis chaired a meeting with ministers and senior officials in Aurangabad yesterday regarding drought mitigation measures in Marathwada.

This will be the first cabinet meeting outside Mumbai of the Fadnavis government. Previous governments had a practice of holding cabinet meetings in Aurangabad, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Mahabaleshwar to address the issues of the region.

Fadnavis said proper planning for supply of water and fodder in drought-affected Marathwada was done. Cattle and fodder camps are systematically planned. Fodder distribution will be done through hydroponic technique.

Describing the situation in Latur as grave, he said,” Water supply to Latur city will be done through railway wagon and water discharge from upper dam to lower dam was also planned.”

Collectors will hold ‘gram sabha’ in every village and inform the details of all the measures taken by the state government.

They will also ensure that food security and health care measures reach beneficiaries. NREGA work will be taken up at large scale which will help employment generation here.

“Water conservation, farm ponds and well work will be taken up for JalYuktShivar programme,” he said.

The water scarcity situation in Marathwada is said to be alarming, with Beed, Osmanabad and Latur districts being the worst-affected. The water storage in reservoirs in the region is only about eight per cent.

No meeting by Mithi river authority in last 5 years: RTI

Mithi River Authority, which was set up after the July 26, 2005 deluge in Mumbai, under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, has not held a single meeting in the last five years, response to an RTI query has revealed.

RTI activist Anil Galgali said that he had sought information from the authority, which was set up to restore the Mithi river that was the reason behind the 2005 disaster, about the details of the meetings held by it since 2005.

The Deputy Planner and Public Information officer of the Authority, Shivraj Pawar informed Galgali that the Mithi River Development and Protection Authority was established on August 19, 2005, with the Chief Minister as its Chairman.

He informed that ever since the formation of the body, total of 6 meetings have been held.

While two meetings were held in 2005, one meeting each was held in the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. However, in the past five years (between 2011 and 2015), previous Chief Ministers Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan and the current one-Devendra Fadnavis did not hold even a single meeting, Pawar told Galgali.

According to the activist, the Chief Secretary has been made the Chairman of the high-power committee of the Authority and the committee, too, has met 11 times since establishment.

Of the 11 meetings, one meeting each was held in the years 2005 and 2012, two meetings each were held in the years 2006 and 2008, and a maximum of five meetings were held in 2013 alone.

There have been no meetings of the high-powered committee under Chief Secretaries J Saharia and Swadheen Kshatriya.

On being questioned about how many meetings were mandatory in a year, Galgali was informed that no such rule is in the government resolution.

The length of the Mithi river is 17.8 kms, of which the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) looks after the development of 11.8 kms from Vihar Lake to CST bridge. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is responsible for developing the remaining six kms from CST bridge to Mahim causeway, including the Vakola nalla portion.

After the Mithi river disaster in 2005 the Maharashtra government formed the Authority and fixed the responsibility of cleaning and development work on the MMRDA and the MCGM.

“Rs. 1,200 crore have been spent on the development activities of the Mithi river till date and the work remains non-satisfactory,” Galgali alleged.
