From the records of the case, he appears to be a stern, no-nonsense person. But he is a true flag-bearer of the rule of law in this country.”

We seriously recommend that the trial court records of this case be included in the curriculum of the National Judicial Authority and the Judicial Authorities of the different states as a model for criminal trial proceedings,” they said.

Maharashtra assures action on supply of sub-standard snacks to schools

The Maharashtra government on Monday told the Bombay High Court it will take action against officials concerned if there has been any lapse in stopping supply of sub-standard snacks to schools in tribal areas.

On August 13, government, in an affidavit, accepted the ‘chikkis’ (a type of sweet snack) supplied to schools in tribal areas in four districts under a Rs. 206-crore procurement scheme by the Ministry for Women and Child Development Ministry was unfit for human consumption and hence supply has been stopped.

The affidavit was filed before a division bench of Justices V M Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi, which was hearing a petition by social worker Sandeep Ahire seeking a ban on manufacture and distribution of sub-standard ‘chikkis’.

However, the Court was informed by Ahire’s advocate Anil Anturkar that as per information received under RTI, ‘chikkis’ are still being distributed in several schools.

Responding to this, senior counsel Srihari Aney, appearing for government, said “we are still standing by our statement. We have not distributed the chikkis after complaints were received.”

Aney, while seeking time to file an affidavit in response to the fresh allegation, told the Court if there has been a breach then government will take action against those responsible.

The next hearing on the petition will take place on August 31.

After parrot, now goat in police ‘custody’

Pictures of a goat behind bars have gone viral, days after a parrot was summoned by Maharashtra police for “hurling obscenities” at a woman.

The goat was reportedly locked up after a complaint was registered by its owner for cattle theft at Pathri in Parbhani district.

The goat was stolen on Saturday, allegedly by three people, one of whom was nabbed by the police on Sunday and put in the Pathri lock-up.

However, the police also locked up the goat along with the alleged thief Naseem Khan. It was only after the photos went viral on WhatsApp and the social media, the goat was released from the lock-up but put under police watch.

A police official at Pathri said that the goat was in the lock-up for only 22 minutes and will be handed over to owner Hidayat Khan only after court’s verdict.

The incident comes days after police had summoned the parrot in Chandrapur district for “abusing” a woman.

Maharashtra to buy Ambedkar’s London house in 15 days: Minister

The Maharashtra Government is all set to acquire the ownership of the three-storey bungalow in London, where Dalit icon and architect of Indian Constitution Babasaheb Ambedkar lived as a student in the 1920s, within 15 days.

Refuting reports that the owner of the bungalow might pull out of the deal, a state minister said the “exchange of contracts” for the purchase of the bungalow will take place in two days and the state will get its ownership within 15 days.

All procedures related to acquiring the 2,050 sq ft bungalow will be over soon and it will be handed over to the state government within the next 15 days, state Social Justice Minister Rajkumar Badole said.

“There is nothing called last day for the purchase of this house. It has been decided that the exchange of contract between both parties will take place within two days. There is no monetary problem as far as the government is concerned. There have been hiccups in the process, but the government will certainly buy the house within 15 days,” Badole told a news agency.

He alleged the reports suggesting that the property’s owner had threatened to withdraw the offer it it was not processed by today were “planted” by the Opposition to cast the government in bad light.

“The Opposition (Congress and the NCP) could do nothing about it in 15 years. When we are taking a step, they want to pull us back by planting stories that would put the government unnecessarily in a bad light,” he said.

Reacting to the charge, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said Badole’s statement “smells of hypocrisy” and proves that this government has no respect for Ambedkar.

“The cultural affairs minister (Vinod Tawde) went to London and announced that the government will buy the house. If the government did intend to buy the home, where has the money that they claim was allocated gone? We have just highlighted that the government is disrespectful towards Ambedkar,” Nirupam said.

The state government had announced earlier its decision to acquire the property at Rs 31 crore and to be preserved as a memorial to Ambedkar, an architect of Indian Constitution besides being the most vocal champion of the rights of the suppressed classes in the country.

The BJP-led Government headed by Devendra Fadnavis has also made a budgetary provision of Rs 40 crore for buying the London bungalow.

However, bureaucratic delays in departments concerned has resulted in the transaction to take far too long.

India planned secret op to kill Dawood Ibrahim, dismantle D-company: RK Singh

As India continues to build more pressure on Pakistan to hand over 1993Mumbai serial blasts mastermind Dawood Ibrahim, former Home Secretary and now BJP leader RK Singh has made a sensational claim that a covert operation was planned by the Indian authorities to kill the fugitive underworld don sometimes back.

Singh made this claim in an interview to the one of the leading news channels during which he regretted that the entire operation was compromised by some corrupt Mumbai Police officials.

The former Home Secretary also stressed that PM Narendra Modi should act firmly against gangster Dawood, who is the country’s most wanted criminal.

Disclosing details of the highly secret operation, Singh said that it was launched when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister and current NSA Ajit Doval was the chief of the IB.

Elaborating on the operation, Singh disclosed that the Indian government had roped in some elements from Dawood’s rival Chhota Rajan’s gang and they were later imparted training at a secret location outside Maharashtra.

However, some Mumbai Police officials who were in regular touch with the D-company landed up at the training camp with arrest warrants for the covert operatives who had been engaged by India.

The entire operation to take down Dawood failed due to these rogue elements in Mumbai Police, Singh claimed. This is the first time that a high-level government official has confirmed about India’s covert operation to take down Dawood Ibrahim.

Noting that Dawood and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed are being protected by the powerful Pakistan Army and the ISI, Singh stressed that a secret operation must be carried out in the manner the United States did to kill terrorists Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar.

Coming down heavily on Islamabad for repeatedly denying Dawood’s presence in Pakistan, Singh added that Pakistan will never admit that the underworld don is there.

It will also shamelessly deny the presence of other terrorists despite funding and training these terror groups on its soil, the BJP MP said, adding, “India must repeat the Myanmar operation in Pakistan.”

Sikh of Punjab needs its own voice

In the recent past, I was very vocal about Punjab issues such as Gurmeet Ram Rahim or be it Badals, or those neglected Sikhs. I know, we are a small media house and my newspaper gets published from Mumbai, but we have one news portal online which is widely read by people within the country and outside. Addressing the issues across the globe is not only my duty but also to do justice to the profession and fight the social evil. However, we all want fair journalism, we want journalists to be unbiased and bold but at the same time when they publish something which doesn’t fit in your interest you slam them with letters, legal notices and calls by creating all sort of pressure tactics. This might be a reason, why many media houses just act as a mouth piece of government or PR agencies. No matter what, we are here to make difference and call spade a spade.

There are many local news channels and newspapers in Punjab, hardly address their own issues. And even the mainstream media are hardly bothered to gawp into Punjab unless some drastic tragedy happens. Let’s start with Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, who held a special meeting with Bandi Singh Sangharsh Committee in the month of May, which leads the struggle initiated by Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, to sort out the burning issue of Sikh political prisoners. In order to decide over the pending cases against Sikh political prisoners as per law, Badal set up a high power panel comprising of additional chief secretary (home), Chief Minister’s principal secretary, chief secretary (jails), additional director general (intelligence and jails) and four representatives of Sikh organizations. The committee has been asked to investigate all related cases to guarantee the timely release of Sikh prisoners. It is worth mentioning that the worsening health condition of Bapu Surat Singh who has been on a hunger strike for the past eight months for releasing of Sikh prisoners languishing in various jails of India despite completion of their terms. Badal initiated the meeting with the committee which is an umbrella organization of all Panthik bodies, for dialogue. Intelligence agencies also then recommended the state government to resolve the issue as soon as possible. However, three months have been completed since but nothing has happened yet by the agencies or Badals and even there is no follow up on the issue.

Ironically, in the same month of May 2015, controversial Punjab Police ‘cat’-turned-dismissed cop Gurmeet Singh Pinky, a life term convict in a murder case was not only prematurely released from jail but also on May 16, was reinstated as a police inspector in Punjab Police at Fatehgarh district of Punjab. He was later set aside, when the matter became a huge political issue and created public hue and cry.

Meanwhile, recently Punjab cabinet had approved an amendment in the “Good Conduct Prisoners Act” of 1962 in order to simplify the procedure of granting parole to prisoners of state’s jails. After amending the Act, it would be easier to grant parole to prisoners on the basis of their good conduct. However, amendment of the act has no mention about the Sikh political prisoners. The amendment may have come to invent a way to release political prisoners on parole? Punjab Government is reportedly under a lot of pressure due to the hunger strike of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, who has been campaigning since January 16, 2015, for the release of political prisoners. There are a number of political prisoners who despite having served their mandatory sentences have not been released. In order to calm down furious Sikh activists, Punjab government pretended to have designed this solution to resolve a long pending issue, but that proved to be an eye wash.

If you remember, very recently the Youth Akali leader Jagtar Singh Bhaini from Sri Anandpur Sahib committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakhra Canal. His moped and footwear were found near the Army Bridge on the Canal. His family had refused to accept that Bhaini could commit suicide. Similarly, police also refrained from declaring it a suicide until the dead body couldn’t be recovered. Jagtar Singh was having disagreement with the SGPC member of his constituency and Education Minister cum MLA from Roop Nagar. His difference with SGPC over a piece of land was under trial in Court. He was considered as a right hand of Damdami Taksal Chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma. Jagtar Singh Bhaini also had conflict with the BJP leaders of his city. A lot of false cases were framed against him by the Police under political pressure. He was under depression after getting stuck in the mesh of conspiracies chalked out against him. So far, there is no investigation or no conclusion drawn over his death, Jagtar’s death became open and shut case. Even media have no information on what has happened in this case.

Punjab is suffering with Drugs, Babas and sadhus; people are misguided from all fronts. A recent study by Dr. Ravinder Sandhu of Guru Nanak Dev University shows that the incidence of such crimes in Punjab is nine times the national average. Between 1999 and 2008 the years when Punjab was recovering from the aftermath of terrorism, such crimes registered a staggering 245 per cent increase. Punjab became the state with the highest number of narcotics-related crimes, surpassing Mizoram which earlier held this dubious distinction. Nobody knows how many of the state’s youngsters are addicts. Youth of Punjab has given up everything; they are not in their senses to ask for their own rights.

Forget about politicians and others, even nature is not very much kind to Punjab. This state is undergoing an ecological disaster due to heavy agriculture supported by heavy use of chemicals and pesticides and overuse of ground water. Major issues that lead to climate change. Thousands of acres of crops are burned to make room for next season’s crops, adding to a health crisis. Farmers are committing suicide, they are overburdened with loans and in such crises surviving is another challenge. Media is ignoring these issues of Punjab.

The need of the hour is that, the Sikh Panth ( Sikh community) should get together to form a Sikh channel in Punjab that could air news regarding crucial issues as well as doing justice to sons of the soil. Media houses are busy in PRing Prakash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Badal etc. Badals themselves have lots of stakes in local media houses and publications. Media in Punjab needs to cover all events and should not act like an obedient slave of politicians. They should represent all sect of society with unbiased mindset. Let’s hope, one day they will stand for their own voice.

Political parties can’t be brought under RTI: Centre to SC

The Centre on Monday reportedly told the apex court that political parties cannot be brought under the control of Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 as it will affect their smooth functioning.

The affidavit was filed by the Centre after the apex court had last month sought responses from the Centre, the Election Commission and six political parties, including Congress and BJP, on a plea to declare all national and regional political parties “public authorities” to bring them under the ambit of the RTI Act.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO ‘The Association for Democratic Reforms’ had approached SC seeking transparency and accountability in functioning of recognised national and regional political parties.

It had claimed that the political parties received huge sums of money in form of donations and contributions from corporates, trusts and individuals but do not disclose complete information about the source of such donations.

In its plea, the NGO had urged the apex court to direct all national and regional parties to mandatorily disclose details about their income as well as expenditure.

Has Pakistan shifted underworld don Dawood from Karachi?

Pakistani Army and the ISI have shifted underworld don and one of India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim from Karachi to country’s North region Muri.

There are also reports that Dawood’s wife and younger daughter have accompanied the mafia don.

Also, Dawood’s younger brother, Anees and his family too have reportedly been shifted along with the mastermind of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

ISI has its safe house in Muri and Dawood has supposedly stayed there before.

In evidence to show that Dawood is holed up in Pakistan, a dossier prepared by India listed nine residences of the underworld don in that country and stated that he is known to frequently change his locations and addresses there.

The information about the residences in Pakistan, including one bought near the house of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of late former PM Benazir Bhutto, in Karachi two years ago is contained in the dossier.

Pakistan has been consistently saying that Dawood is not living in Pakistan.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, said yesterday that Dawood is permanently living in Pakistan though he may be changing locations in that country even as BJP said there was “irrefutable evidence” of India’s most wanted criminal’s presence there and that it cannot longer remain in denial.

“Such people keep changing their location. But he is permanently living in Pakistan,” said Singh in Lucknow.

The dossier also said that Dawood has three Pakistani passports which he frequently uses to travel.

Dawood is wanted in India for the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in which 257 people were killed and nearly a thousand injured.

He is also accused of masterminding other terror attacks and of money laundering and extortion.

The dossier said a new residence Dawood bought is located at Shireen Jinah Colony near Ziauddin Hospital, Cliffton, Karachi.

Apart from this house, the other places where he regularly frequents are – Moin Palace, near Abdullah Shah Gazi Dargah, Cliffton, Karachi, 6A Khyabar Tanzeem, Phase V, Defence Housing area, Karachi, ISI safe house located on Bhoubhan Hill, around 20 km from Islamabad on Islamabad-Muree Road, P 6/2, street no.22, House no. 29, Maragalla Road, Islamabad, 17 C P Bazar Society, Block 7-8, Amir Khan Road, Karachi, 30th street in Phase 6 extension of DHA in Karachi, 8th floor of Mohran Square near Pardesi House 3, Tawar area, Cliffton, Karachi and a palatial bunglow in the hilly area of Nooriabad, Karachi.

According to the dossier, Dawood has three Pakistani passports — first one issued in Rawalpindi (No.G-866537), second in Karachi (No. C-267185) and a third one which was also issued in Karachi (No. KC-285901).
