Supreme Court fined Ansal brothers Rs. 60 crore, refrain jail term in Uphaar fire case

Uphaar-fire-caseThe Supreme Court on Wednesday imposed a hefty fine of Rs. 60 crore on Ansal brothers – Gopal and Sushil – who had been earlier convicted in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.

The Supreme Court, however, ruled no jail term for the Uphaar cinema hall owners. The fine imposed on them has to be paid within three months. Each of the brothers will have to pay a fine of Rs. 30 crore to the Delhi government within three months, the three-judge bench of the apex court ruled.

Two members of the three-judge bench hearing the case disagreed on the sentencing of the Ansal brothers.

Neelam Krishnamurthy, whose young son and daughter died in the fire, has led the long and tough campaign for families who lost relatives in the huge fire in the heart of the capital.

Mrs. Krishnamoorthy broke down after hearing the Supreme Court verdict. “I was very angry and disappointed.  It seems that the judiciary is only for the rich, I’ve been let down very badly. The judges said in their order this was willful negligence,” she said, referring to the lengthy trial.
The Rs. 60 crore due from the Ansals within three months is to be paid to the Delhi government for the building of a trauma centre.
“Can the money ever be a substitute for losing your children?” Mrs. Krishnamoorthy said, her voice shaking with emotion.

Of the two brothers, Sushil Ansal had served a jail term of 5 months and 22 days and Gopal Ansal, 142 days.

Earlier during the hearing, the apex court said that the case of their conviction in the Uphaar fire tragedy can’t be reopened and hearing will remain focussed on their sentencing.

Ansals’ lawyer Ram Jethmalani had pleaded before the apex court to argue on facts relating to Ansals’ conviction.

The apex court bench, however, asked him to raise it in a review petition later.

On March 5 last year, the Supreme Court had upheld the conviction of Gopal and Sushil Ansal in 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.

The Supreme Court then deferred decision on quantum of sentence for Ansal brothers and transferred the case to a three-judge bench.

Earlier, the high court had reduced their sentence from two years to one year whereas the CBI and victims of the fire tragedy had demanded that the Ansals be convicted under more stringent sections.

A total of 59 people died and 100 were injured when there was a big fire at Uphaar cinema hall, in the heart of south Delhi, while a film was being screened on the evening of June 13, 1997. The fire started in the parking lot and then engulfed the building in the busy Green Park area – most people died in the ensuing stampede or were asphyxiated.

In 2003, the Delhi High Court awarded compensation of Rs. 18.5 crores to be paid – Rs. 18 lakh to the next of kin of each victim above 20 years of age; Rs. 15 lakh for victims below 20 years of age; and Rs. 1 lakh each to the injured. The court ordered that this be paid with nine per cent interest.

Kejriwal, Nitish Kumar take on PM Modi, may campaign together for Bihar polls

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday extended his support to JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar for upcoming Bihar Assembly elections while also felicitating the latter during Bihar Samman Samaroh in Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar thanked Kejriwal for inviting him at Bihar Samman Samaroh.

“It’s good that people have voted for AAP. Arvind Kejriwal is a right choice for Delhi. 67 out of 70 seats is a surprising mandate. And, AAP got this mandate when PM Modi had said that Delhi’s mood was same as that of nation’s and vice versa. After Delhi has shown its mood, PM Modi is trying hard for Bihar,” said Nitish.

Further, extending his support to Bihar CM, Arvind Kejriwal assured him that he will go to Bihar whenever Nitish will call him.

“Before elections PM Modi says something and post elections something else. Had he announced before during Rewari rally that OROP scheme will take some time to be implemented, he wouldn’t have got votes,” said Kejriwal.

Shocking! Brothers behead sister, march around village with severed head

In a shocking incident that came to light in Uttar Pradesh, two brothers beheaded their sister in Bamani Chowki village only because she was having an affair with a cousin.

The brothers were so enraged that they even carried the severed, bleeding head of their 17-year-old sister around the village.

The brothers – Gul Hasan (25) and Nanhey (20) – had spotted Phool Jahan outside their cousin’s house in the afternoon on Monday.

The girl had, in fact, stayed at the cousin’s place overnight, as per reports.

The brothers got enraged because they had earlier rejected their sister’s request to marry her cousin and even warned her to stay away from him.

On noticing their sister outside the cousin’s home, the brothers dragged her away and beheaded her.

They then marched around the village carrying the severed head, and bragged, “Dekho, hamne apni behen ko maar dala aur pyar karney ki yehi sazaa hoti hai (See, we have killed our sister and this is the punishment for having a love affair).”

While police have managed to arrest one of the brothers, the other is on the run with the sister’s head.

Bamani Chowki village falls under the jurisdiction of Paraur police station in Shahjhanapur district.

India to respond ‘appropriately’ if Pak NSA Sartaj Aziz meets Kashmiri separatists

Apparently irked over the Pakistan High Commission’s invitation to Kashmiri separatist leaders to meet its NSA Sartaj Aziz when he arrives here on August 23 to hold talks on terror, India on Wednesday said that it will “respond appropriately” if the Pakistanis go ahead with the meeting with them.

The Kashmiri separatist leaders have been invited by the Pakistan High Commission here to meet Aziz, who will visit India to hold talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, a move about which the government is clearly unhappy, sources said.

“Let’s see what happens (if they go ahead with the meeting with the separatists). The government will respond appropriately,” said government sources.

The sources asserted that there are some sections in the Pakistani establishment which want to “scuttle” the Indo-Pak talks and are ratcheting up anti-India activities thereby, pushing India to call off NSA-level talks scheduled for Sunday.

“The invitation should be seen as latest provocative move in that direction,” the sources said.

Hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been been invited to meet Aziz while other separatists leaders like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have been invited for the reception being held in Aziz’s honour by the Pakistan mission.

Last year, India had unilaterally called off Foreign Secretary-level talks after the Pakistan High Commissioner here had held “consultations” with the Kashmiri separatist leaders on the eve of the Foreign Secretary-level meeting.

Four men can’t rape a woman, so gang rapes doesn’t exist, says Mulayam Singh Yadav

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has yet again created a storm with his controversial comments. Stating that the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is better than all other states, he said that one person commits rape and four are named in the complaint. To corroborate his claim, he added that “it is impossible for 4 men to rape a woman.”

“I know of many such cases, where 1 person commits the rape and 4 people are named in the report. There are cases where one person commits crime, 4 brothers in the same family get arrested,” he said.

This is not the first time that Mulayam has made a shocking and insensitive statement. In April 2014, while opposing death penalty to three men convicted in a gangrape case, he had said that “boys will be boys, they commit mistakes.”

He had even blamed the girls for rape saying that girls get friendly with boys and when they fight and have differences, they term it as rape.

The Samajwadi Party also hit out at the opposition saying an effort was being made to “defame” the government due to “political enmity”. The Uttar Pradesh government which has been facing criticism over law and order situation,

Referring to the law and order situation in the state, the SP supremo said that considering UP’s population, crime rate was “very low”.

I am dying to be in a comedy movie: Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita-NyongOscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who is starring in three upcoming Disney films, says she want to do a fun movie next.

“I’m really dying to be in a comedy. I’d love to be in a love story! How about some of that?,” Nyong’o said on the sidelines of Disney’s D23 Expo.

Horoscopes are satanic

Astrology and horoscopes have been around since the early Old Testament times. Today, they are more popular than ever (almost everyone knows their horoscope sign) being found in daily newspapers, magazines, online, and even on Facebook. They are read by millions and millions of people, including the rich and famous (actors, politicians, sports stars, etc.), the not so famous, and even by many Christians. Some people even go so far as to plan their lives around what their horoscope says (i.e. financial decisions, who they date or marry, when to go on a vacation, will they get a job or pass an exam, etc.).

Astrology and horoscopes have had their roots in paganism and the worship of the sun, moon, and stars as gods. It is taking objects which the one true God of the Bible created, and giving them power that belongs ONLY to Him. This is idolatry, blasphemy, and sin.

Nearly all horoscopes today are nothing more than good (or bad) psychology. Anybody who wanted to could set themselves up as a ‘fortune teller’. But it can be the thin end of a wedge that opens the door to spiritistic influences. Most people read them and laugh, then forget all about them until one appears to happen and they think twice. That can lead to consulting a medium and seeking more personalised horoscopes. Some mediums are into spiritistic practices and it is that which the Bible condemns.
Horoscopes tell us that we are all ‘ruled’ by planetary forces. The Holy Bible tells us that we are to worship the Creator alone and not the creation. Astrology goes back to the beginning of recorded history and has always been a snare to lure people away from the Creator.

At the roots of astrology, is a deep human desire to know the future and to explain the meaning and purpose of human life. Even the ancient Babylonians practiced astrology as far back as 1800 B.C. The Babylonians used astrology as part of a divination or predicting of the future. It was believed that the gods presented themselves by their constellations and planets. Astrology has been practiced by almost every culture known to mankind and continues till this very day.
