Asserting that the grand alliance announced the sharing of seats for the Bihar Assembly polls in a hurry, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday said that it should have got more seats in its kitty since JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar was declared the chief ministerial candidate.
“The leaders of coalition decided the seat sharing strategy. But the party workers and supporters of RJD feel that if Nitish Kumar got the chief ministerial post, their party’s share in assembly seats should have been more, people are disappointed with equal sharing,” said RJD leader Raghuvansh Singh.
“There has been hurry in announcing the sharing of seats for the coming election in Bihar,” he added.
Responding to a poser on whether the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) should have got a bigger share, Singh said, “The coalition leaders should take a call on NCP`s seat sharing and they should act mutually on it.”
The RJD and JD (U) will contest on 100 seats each, while the Congress will field candidates in 40 assembly constituencies.
The extent of government intervention in academic matters has become “extraordinarily common” and often “politically extreme” under the NDA regime, says Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.
He, however, says this is not the first time that a government has interfered in academic matters with its own views as the previous UPA government’s record in non- interference was “far from impeccable”.
“But the extent of intervention has become extraordinarily common and often politically extreme under the present regime,” 81-year-old Sen writes in his new book “The Country of First Boys”, in which he tries to seek an understanding of India’s history and the demands of its future.
“And often enough, the persons chosen for heading institutions of national importance have been exceptionally dedicated to promoting Hindutva priorities,” he adds.
The 1998 Economics Nobel winner then cites the example of the newly-appointed head of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), Yellapragada Sudershan Rao, saying he “may not be known for research in history, but his Hindutva- oriented opinions are well-known”.
Similarly, the new head of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Lokesh Chandra, has shared with us his view that Modi is, in fact, “a reincarnation of God”, he says.
Published by Oxford University Press, the book also has essays on justice, identity, deprivation, inequalities, gender politics, education, the media and the Nalanda University.
Sen alleges that the new government has been active in trying to impose its own views on many academic institutions, and Nalanda University is not the only such institution the intellectual independence of which has been under considerable threat in recent months.
On May 30, the government announced that former Foreign Minister of Singapore George Yeo will be the new Chancellor of the Nalanda University; over two months after Sen withdrew his candidature to the post for a second term, claiming the Narendra Modi government does not want him to continue.
According to Sen, it will remain “extremely important for
the government to live up to our hope that Yeo will have the independence he would need to make Nalanda an academic success in line with its vision, rather than its going down the sectarian way the ICHR and the ICCR have gone”.
Disappointed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance that the government has accepted “in principle” their demand for ‘One Rank One Pension’ (OROP), ex-servicemen on Sunday announced intensification of their stir by deciding to launch an indefinite hunger strike from August 24.
“A group of ex-servicemen will start an indefinite fast here from August 24,” Col (Retd) Anil Kaul, media advisor to the United Front of Ex-Servicemen Movement, told as the agitation at Jantar Mantar entered the 63rd day.
The protestors have been on a relay hunger strike so far.
In his speech on Independence Day from Red Fort, Modi had not given a specific timeline for the implementation of OROP, but stressed that talks were in the final stages, drawing sharp reactions from ex-servicemen who vowed to step up their protest.
Meanwhile, AAP MLA Col (Retd) Devinder Sehrawat, who skipped the President’s at-home reception on Independence Day over the demand, has written to Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention on behalf of the protesting ex-servicemen.
“I have to inform you with a heavy heart that the ex- servicemen are languishing on the road, undergoing shabby and disgraceful treatment at the hands of police and municipal authorities, as they protest for their rightful demand of OROP.
“Pardon my audacity, but they do expect your intervention in the matter,” Sehrawat said in his letter yesterday to the President — who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The AAP legislator from Bijwasan constituency, Sehrawat also said he will “actively” participate in a dharna called by ex-servicemen over the OROP demand as no firm time-frame has been declared for its implementation.
Ex-servicemen are holding a protest at Jantar Mantar and in other parts of the country for two months demanding early implementation of OROP.
Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone has bared all for a magazine cover and opened up about her past health problems.
Stone appeared nude in the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, in a stunning black and white pictorial shot by celebrity photographer Mark Abrahams.
In the accompanying interview. The 57-year-old actress opens up about the cerebral hemorrhage she suffered in 2001 and how she has rebuilt her life and career since her health scare.
“When I came to, the doctor was leaning over me. I said, ‘Am I dying?’ And he said, ‘You’re bleeding into your brain,'” Stone remembers.
“I said, ‘I should call my mom,’ and he said, ‘You’re right. You could lose the ability to speak soon’,” she recalled.
Stone was eventually diagnosed with a ruptured vertebral artery, and revealed she had been hemorrhaging so much that her brain had been pushed into the front of her face. “It took two years for my body just to absorb all the internal bleeding I had. It almost feels like my entire DNA changed. My brain isn’t sitting where it used to, my body type changed, and even my food allergies are different.”
Singer Taylor Swift and DJ-producer Calvin Harris have been offered $10 million to pose for an underwear advertisement together.
Bosses of luxury brand Armani are reportedly eager to have the A-list couple front a new ad campaign together, following the success of Harris’ recent shoots as the male face of the luxury briefs, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
It is said that this step has been taken following David and Victoria Beckham’s intimate shoot for Armani in 2009.
“Armani bosses reckon Taylor and Calvin could emulate the success of the David and Victoria adverts,” a source told the Daily Star newspaper.
“The Taylor offer is initially around the $10 million mark but that sum can then triple with global promotion if the campaign is successful. Taylor and Calvin is the hottest thing on the planet right now. Calvin’s adverts have done really well and helped the brand reach a different audience,” the source added.
The deal would help Swift, 25, and Harris, 31, cement their status as the highest paid couple in music.
The two are estimated to have a combined net worth of $146 million.
Singer Kylie Minogue suffered wardrobe malfunction on the set of her new music video for “Absolutely Anything and Anything At All”.
The Australia-born singer nearly spilled out of her top while dancing to the music, reported Ace Showbiz.
The mishap was recorded in a video Minogue recently posted on Instagram. The 47-year-old singer wore a black-and-white striped bodysuit with a zipper on the front part and a sheer white long skirt. The blonde beauty was apparently not aware that the zipper came undone.
“When you’re filming candid stuff for #AbsolutelyAnything ….. But ‘NO’!!,” she wrote. The singer also showed her sense of humour in another behind-the-scenes video she posted on the social media.
As the “Absolutely Anything and Anything At All” music video featured aliens in some scenes, she was required to act before blue screen. She pretended that there were many aliens around her and showed bewildered expression on her face.
A lot of brouhaha was happening last week concerning the ban on pornographic sites. Our paper had spoken to various correspondents and netizens on their views about this topic. One journalist stated that several soft porn movies are being made and the stars of those films are being promoted. One of the interesting ones was when Amandeep Saini an RJ from Punjab said that he would love to see the government demolishing the Khajuraho temple. This is where my moot point begins. This temple which is renowned all over the world for its artistic sculptures is a site which has inspired many and is one of the highest tourist attractions and revenue generating spots for the country. Our country has given the world the famous “Kamasutra” which I’m sure remains the highest selling graphic books yet. That erotica, which was written by Mallanaga Vatsyayana in 2nd century CE is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behaviour. It’s about the philosophy and theory of love, what triggers desire, what sustains it, how and when it is good or bad. Not just Indians but people from across the world refer to the textbook. It is a part of their collection with all other intelligent books and may also include D.H.Lawrence’s Lady Chatterlys lover which also fits in the genre of ‘erotica’ and first published in 1928.
‘Kama’ implies sexual desire while ‘Sutra’ means a thread or line that holds things together. Together, Kamasutra is a manual that contains a set of rules and advice for fulfilling sexual needs. Only 20 per cent they say is about postures. So the question isn’t perversion in the mind rather than being triggered by watching pornography, the answer is yes.
Perversion is when in a crowded train a woman enters the men’s compartment and in that crowd one particular man is trying to grope her or brush her physically to titillate himself. It is when in an isolated lane four goons pass lewd comments against women. Perversion is when a man is trying to strip you by looking you from top to toe and mentally stripping you instead of looking you into the eye. This is what my second moot point is all about. Not all students can afford to buy the book ‘Kamasutra’. Why not impose a charge for an application that is specifically known to display only pornography. Some kind of dynamics should be in place wherein the person has to be of a certain age, 21 years and above perhaps to watch it. There must be verification of his age proof and an application for his snapshot or of his pan card for veracity.
In England certain X-rated films are shown after 12 pm. People who want to watch that movie have to pay a price of 15 pounds which would otherwise cost 4 to 8 pounds for a normal film. So couples who watch it for boosting ecstasy, valid or no valid reason pay extra charges. Like Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said “What people do in their bedrooms is not government business”. Counselling and educating the students wisely about sex in these times becomes important with girls and boys having separate classes to avoid embarrassment and free debates be it school or wise parents. That is what democracy is about and like the government’s proposal stands to curb and remove the child pornography websites and to consider some other suggestions which have come to our paper to ban those that promote heinous acts in these films.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says watching a film like ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’ on a small laptop doesn’t justify the purpose of watching a movie of that huge scale and depth.
Interacting with journalists during the film’s promotion, Nawazuddin was asked about business getting hit due to the film’s leak.
“All I can say is that, a story and a film like this cannot be watched on a small laptop. A story where there is a mountain and a person is standing in front of it; the depth of such a visual can’t be seen on a small laptop screen. So it’s my sincere request to people who have already seen the film that they come to the theatres to watch it again,” he said.
“The pleasure can be felt only on the big screen. The film will make you cry and laugh and crack all your emotions and that’s why you should watch it on the big screen,” he said.
“The film has a huge scale and if people prefer to watch such a film on their laptops, then I don’t know what to say. The experience of such a film is best felt on the big screen. All I want to say is that we have made the film with a lot of passion and now we only hope is that the film reaches the audience.”
The film, which also stars Radhika Apte, is releasing on August 21.
Brothers star Jacqueline Fernandez feels insecurity is the major factor why actresses cannot be friends with each other in the B-Town.
“If you are insecure then you can’t be friends with anyone. I love Sonam (Kapoor) so much is because she is not insecure and not even I am. She is confident and she is an intelligent girl who has achieved so much in her life till now. I get along well with her,” said Jacqueline.
The 30-year-old actress, who owns a restaurant in Sri Lanka, plans to open one here. “I have a restaurant in Sri Lanka and I feel keen to open up something here in Mumbai and bring Sri Lankan food here in India. I feel we have so much in common but we have a different cuisine and I am sure people will enjoy here,” the “Murder 2” star said.
“I am passionate about spreading awareness about Sri Lankan food. I know whoever visits my restaurant they have loved the food. I will be able to do something in the future.”
Jacqueline, who is one of the stylish actresses in the Hindi filmdom, has no plans of having her own clothing line. “I will never venture into clothing line that is Sonam’s (Sonam Kapoor) department and not mine,” she added.
Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan will be seen in Kabir Khan’s ‘Phantom’ opposite Katrina Kaif. The film is already in news over its content.
During a press interaction, lead actor Saif mentioned that through his character in the movie, the makers wanted to project that Indian Muslims too feel patriotic about their country.
“We haven’t stressed much that he is an Indian Muslim, but according to me, it holds substantial importance as an undercurrent influence. Kabir Khan, I and Sajid Nadiadwala are all Indian Muslims. So in a way, we wanted to show that Indian Muslims also feel patriotic”, he added.
‘Phantom’ is set to release worldwide on August 28, 2015.
