Pawar jumped in Maharashtra battlefield, warns agitation if promises are not fulfilled

Pawar threatens to launch jail bharo aandolan if the Fadnavis government fails to provide financial assistance to drought affected farmers.

Sharad-pawar (2)NCP chief Sharad Pawar has criticised the Fadnavis government for its inability to tackle drought in Maharashtra. Pawar who is touring the Marathwada region of the state said that the government is turning a blind eye towards the drought relief issue. Pawar has threatened to organise a jail bharo andholan if the government fails to provide financial assistance to drought affected farmers. He appealed to the government to solve the problems of farmers at the earliest.

The Maharashtra government has reported 257 suicides by farmers in the State between January and March this year resulting from the agrarian crisis. As many as 114 cases of suicides were reported from the Aurangabad region, followed by Amrawati (102), Nagpur (30) and Nashik (nine) the data showed. Eight eight farmers have committed suicide in Osmanabad. NCP had held a protest in Osmanabad district to make the government aware about the situation prevailing in the drought hit Marathwada region.

Sharad Pawar said, “Farmers problems won’t be solved if they commit suicides. It is first necessary to ascertain the reasons behind why they are taking this drastic step. We also need to monitor whether the farmers are actually receiving the funds disbursed by the government. The collector has said that farmers’ problems will be resolved within a month. Let us wait for a month and if the situation doesn’t improve then we will have to go ahead with the jail bharo aandolan.”

“I wanted to discuss about the farmers’ issues in the parliament but was unable to do so due to frequent disruptions in the house. As a result of this 25 days have already been wasted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to attend the parliament session. Forget about having discussion he didn’t even appear in the parliament” said Pawar.

“The government is overlooking the interest of the poor people. When the Fadnavis government had come to power it was expected that they will provide good governance in the state but it is not happening. They have failed to fulfil the promises made by them prior to the assembly election” he added further.

A BJP cabinet member admitted that the state’s efforts to tackle the drought were grossly inadequate. “We will have to deploy more water tankers and utilize the rail network for transportation of water,” he said.

“We are banking on district collectors and zilla parishad chief executive officers, but we have failed to monitor their performance,” he said.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray took a dig at NCP supremo Sharad Pawar over his proposed visit to the drought-affected regions of Maharashtra, and said the veteran politician is now showing concern for farmers after 35 years.

“Congress and NCP are like empty boxes. Sharad Pawar is speaking for farmers after 35 years. What did he do for farmers when he was the Agriculture Minister? Farmers have reached this stage today only because of their government. It needs to be known why irrigation projects were left midway despite so much amount being spent on them,” he added.

What’s delaying OROP implementation?

In the eighth installment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio talk, he had assured ex-servicemen that his government would soon resolve the OROP issue. The agitation by ex-Army personnel comes two weeks after PM Narendra Modi repeats his assurance to execute the OROP in the eighth episode of his radio programme “Mann Ki Baat”. However, due to the delay in the implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) policy, ex-servicemen held protests across the country, demanding its immediate introduction. The pension issue for ex-service men is very crucial and government needs to understand that just by speaking on radio or television the issue of their lives will not be resolved. All ex-servicemen always worked hard for the country at least they should not be forgotten. One year is too long time to implement such a simple thing particularly when the Defence Minister said that he had worked out all the details and are ready but needs the Finance Ministry’s nod. However, the civil servants applied the veto exposing the political leadership as weak and untrustworthy.

It is extremely painful to see that politics is being played out on such an important issue and Prime Minister Modi as usual promising things but hardly implementing anything. Can’t we look after our veterans, who put their life for the safety of our nation? We are not doing any favour to them by giving adequate pension. It is an opportunity to do something for their selfless service to the nation. Present government must take this issue with utmost seriousness and sincerity. It is actually shameful for us that the policy is being delayed because of the issue of funding. In country where lakhs and crores of rupees scams happened, this urgent policy, which require around eight thousand crore, had to be delayed for decades, citing the lack of funds. Now the new government has to understand the need of the hour and take necessary, quick actions.

Mounting pressure on the government ahead of Independence Day, four former service chiefs in an “open letter” sought intervention of the President for early implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) to avoid the situation “getting out of hand”. While expectations are high among ex-servicemen of an announcement on the issue by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day, Finance Ministry sources told that consultations so far have not been conclusive and discussions are still on.

One Rank, One Pension is an old demand of Indian military personnel. The term means armed forces personnel holding the same rank and same length of service will get the same pension, regardless of the last drawn pay. The Indian government accepted the demand in 2014. In its July 2014 Budget, Government of India allocated Rs. 1000 crore for this scheme. Due to some technical calculations and interpretations to be concluded by the related ministry, there was a delay in the implementation of the scheme in 2014. Recent meetings have been on the positive note indicating that the scheme will be implemented before the approval of budget of India 2015-16. Due to a fear that civilian retired employees of central government may also demand OROP, the Defence Minister decided to rename the Defence pensions as military pension which could not possibly be claimed by civilians. While inaugurating a top defence accounts dept controllers meet on 30 April 2015, he asked the MoD officials to be prepared to implement OROP orders shortly. There are unsatisfied elements and opposition party sympathasiers in ESM, as veterans are called in India, community who sledge the government as well as Defence minister for delay in implementation of the scheme.

The protest comes after talks — both formal and back-channel — with the government failed as the ex-servicemen were not given a specific timeline for the implementation of the long-pending OROP. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government was committed to implement the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme for ex-servicemen, but sought time to resolve its complexities. Attacking the previous governments for “playing politics” over the issue for the past 40 years, he said OROP was “a complex issue”, but BJP made it even more complicated.

OROP has been a long-standing demand of over two million ex-servicemen of India. The ex-servicemen maintained that they were not against any government but were protesting to get their long-pending dues. Interestingly, some farmers’ groups and students from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University also joined the protests.

Close to 22 lakh ex-servicemen and over six lakh war widows stand to be the immediate beneficiaries of the scheme. OROP file was with the Finance Ministry for a final budgetary approval. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has repeatedly said that the government has completed all formalities and OROP will be implemented soon. In a bid to step up pressure on the Modi government for the implementation of One Rank One Pension scheme, ex-servicemen have signed a petition in blood and will hand it to President Pranab Mukherjee and the Prime Minister. Let’s hope that BJP will act on what they say.

Radhe Maa questioned for four hours in police station, HC gave 2 weeks interim bail

RadheRadhe Maa, self-appointed godwoman, stepped out of the Kandivali police station in suburban Mumbai four-and-a-half hours after she had gone in for questioning in a dowry harassment case on Friday. Police sources said she was interrogated by five officers and asked 70 questions. She came out of the police station wearing big sunglasses and a trishul or trident in hand, her trademark red clothes, a sharp contrast to the sea of khaki around her.

While she was being questioned, the Bombay High Court granted Radhe Maa anticipatory bail which means she will not be arrested for the next two weeks. But for the next two weeks, every Wednesday, she must present herself at the police station between 11 am and 1 pm.

Radhe Maa claims she has lakhs of followers. When she arrived at the police station today in a white SUV, about 20 supporters and 40 cops were awaiting her arrival.

She rushed in and her supporters outside held hands, their lips moving in silent prayer. They wore red bands around their heads with Radhe Maa written on them. Some seemed close to tears.

Ruling on Radhe Maa’s anticipatory bail plea, the High Court said that the godwoman cannot be arrested for at least two weeks.

A Mumbai sessions court had yesterday denied the controversial godwoman anticipatory bail. Her lawyers had then moved the Bombay High Court seeking relief from arrest.

The High Court also ordered Radhe Maa to present herself before police every Wednesday.

The development came even as Sukhwinder Kaur alias Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa was being interrogated by the Mumbai Police at the Kandivali Police Station in connection with a dowry harassment case.

There was speculation that the godwoman could be arrested today if her answers prove to be unsatisfactory.

In her complaint last week, a 32-year-old woman had alleged that Radhe Maa had instigated her husband and in-laws to demand dowry from her.

The woman had alleged that Radhe Maa had instigated her in-laws, who have been the godwoman’s followers for the past several years.

Radhe Maa rubbished the dowry charges levelled against her and said she had nothing to do with the family dispute.

The controversial godwoman is also facing allegations of instigating several men to commit suicide.

Born as Sukhvinder Kaur, Radhe Maa hails from an affluent family of Gurdaspur and her father was a government servant in Punjab.

Educated upto senior secondary level, she dropped out of school and got married at the age of 18 to a businessman, Mohan Singh, of Hoshiarpur and the couple has three children.

NCP demands ACB inquiry into housing project of BJP MLA’s firm

Mangal-Prabhat-LodhaNCP today demanded an inquiry by the anti-corruption bureau into the permissions granted to Palava housing project in neighbouring Thane, following the reports that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had withdrawn additional FSI worth Rs. 3,000 crore given to the venture.

Senior BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha’s firm is constructing this township project. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik claimed that the company paid a very little premium to get additional Floor Space Index. “Fadnavis cancelled the approval for this project after the illegalities came to light…scrutiny papers of the project are missing. This should be investigated,” he said.

To the question whether the former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan (of Congress), who held the urban development portfolio during the relevant period, should be held accountable, Malik said only a probe will establish the truth. “We are not casting aspersions on anyone,” he said.

The NCP leader also demanded special audit of the Jalyukt Shivar (water conservation on the farms) Yojna, Fadnavis’s pet scheme, within fifteen days. He also criticised Fadnavis for hosting a dinner for corporate leaders and officials of consulates in Mumbai tonight, when the state was reeling under a drought, and accused that the Chief Minister was insensitive to the farmers’ plight.

Shiv Sena takes a dig at Rahul Gandhi; slams Congress for wasting Parliament session

UdhdhavThe Shiv Sena on Friday accused the Congress of derailing the monsoon session of Parliament over the Lalit Modi issue and sought to tell party Vice President Rahul Gandhi that if issuing interpol ‘notices’ could have served the purpose, then many terrorists and criminals staying in Pakistan would have been brought to India long back.

The Sena’s comments comes a day after the Parliament’s monsoon session ended without passing keys Bills, as the Congress demanded former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi to be brought back to India and made to face the law for alleged financial irregularities. “By wasting the monsoon session of the Parliament for one Lalit Modi, the Congress has caused not only immense financial loss to the nation, but also security related issues that were were to be discussed. While the Parliament was getting affected here, Lalit Modi must have been enjoying the show sitting in London,” the Sena said in its editorial mouthpiece ‘Saamana.’

“The Indian government is playing paper games by issuing Blue corner notice at times and Red corner notice at other times. Lalit Modi has been accused of financial irregularities, while the British government has allowed him to safely reside there. Rahul Gandhi should remember if by issuing notices an accused could have been brought back to India, many terrorists and criminals staying in Pakistan would have been long brought back to India,” the Sena said.

Unfazed by the BJP offensive on his family in Parliament, Gandhi, who has been gunning for the tainted cricket czar had attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he lacked guts and challenged him to bring back Lalit Modi, who he described as the “biggest link” between the political system and black money.

The Sena further said that while Gandhi relates the ex-IPL commissioner and Indian Premier League to black money, he should keep in mind that the game started during the tenure of the Congress government.
“If somebody feels that Lalit Modi has made black money, then it is possible that those who are levelling allegations today may also be a part of that crime,” the Sena said.

Top police officer shunted out after controversial hotel raids in Malwani

Days after controversial police raids on hotels in north Mumbai led to accusations of moral policing, Additional Commissioner of Police Fateh Singh Patil, who was incharge of the area and was probing the incident, has been shunted out and posted in Nanded district of Maharashtra.

The state government, however, said the transfer was not connected to the raids on hotels at Madh Island and Aksa beach in which nearly 61 people were arrested and booked for “indecency in public” on August 6.

After the police action had sparked outrage, Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had ordered Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police (North), to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

“Fateh Singh Patil has been transferred to Nanded because Nanded required an Inspector General (IG) for a long time. So we had to downgrade the post of IG to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and then we had to find an officer for the post. Patil has been selected for the post,” Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi said.

Replying to another query, he said the transfer has no connection with the incident.

A team of Malwani police station officials led by DCP (Zone XI) Vikram Deshmane had conducted the raids at few hotels, resorts and lodges as well as beaches at Madh Island and Aksa in North Mumbai.

Later, 61 people, including 13 couples, were arrested under section 110 (indecent behaviour in public) of Maharashtra Police Act. However, they were let off after being fined Rs 1,200 each with an undertaking that they will appear before the local magistrate when required.

The police action was criticised by people who called it intrusion into one’s privacy and asked why consenting adults cannot stay together.

PM Modi should implement OROP: Rahul Gandhi

RahulCongress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday extended his support to ex-servicemen protesting over ‘One Rank, One Pension’ and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare a date for the implementation of the long pending demand of the armed forces.

Rahul went to Jantar Mantar and met the protesting (retired) personnel of the armed forces.

After meeting them, the Congress vice president asked PM Modi to announce the final date as to when his NDA government will implement the OROP.

“The Prime Minister had promised to implement OROP, so now he should fulfil his promise,” Rahul said.

The Amethi MP denounced police action to evict protesters from Jantar Mantar. “These people shouldn’t be removed, they’re protesting for their right,” the Gandhi scion opined.

Showing solidarity with the retired ex-servicemen, Rahul added, “People from armed forces spend their lives on the border, and now they are fighting for their rights.”

Rahul’s reaction comes after agitating ex-servicemen demanding implementation of OROP were today allegedly manhandled by the Delhi Police as it tried to evict them from protest hotspot Jantar Mantar ahead of the Independence Day celebrations for security reason.

The police said they tried to evict protesters from various outfits from Jantar Mantar in the heart of the capital following a request by civic agency New Delhi Municipal Council.

The ex-servicemen requested Police Commissioner BS Bassi to restore their tents.

Later the Delhi Police announced that the ex-servicemen can continue with their protest.

Government to name and shame chargesheeted sex offenders

Parents, employers and concerned people will soon get on a website information about sex offenders and others chargesheeted for crimes against women anywhere in the country as the Home Ministry is planning to make public online names of all such persons.

Steps are afoot to extend the Crimes and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project by publication of a list of charge-sheeted offenders in cases pertaining to crime against women, Home Minister Rajnath Singh wrote in a special feature issued on the eve of Independence Day.

List of wanted and most wanted criminals, publication of a list of proclaimed offenders, information on human trafficking and missing persons, accessing legal services will also be part of the online initiative under the CCTNS, he said in the feature title ‘Steps taken to make the country safe and secure’.

The United States has a similar website called National Sex Offender Public Website. Concerned residents can utilise the website’s search tool to identify location information on sex offenders residing and working not only in their own neighbourhoods but in other nearby states and communities. In addition, the US government website provides visitors with information about sexual abuse and how to protect themselves and loved ones from potential victimisation.

The Home Ministry’s Central Citizen Portal and a central database will provide useful services to the citizens speedily. The intended services include reporting a crime, passport verification, other kind of police verification and accessing victim compensation fund.

“Women’s Safety has been my prime concern. On the 1st of January this year Delhi Police launched an application called ‘Himmat’ which receives distress signals from registered women users of mobile phones and facilitates physical presence of police in 5-7 minutes,” Singh said.

India rejects use of terrorism as state policy: President Pranab Mukherjee

In an apparent message to Pakistan, President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said “our neighbours” must ensure that their territory is not used by forces inimical to India which rejects any attempt to use terrorism as an instrument of state policy.

“While we offer our hand willingly in friendship, we cannot stay blind to deliberate acts of provocation and a deteriorating security environment. India is a target of vicious terrorist groups operating from across the borders,” the President said in his address to the nation on the eve of 69th Independence Day without taking any countries name.

Asserting that India’s policy will remain one of zero tolerance for terrorism, he said “we reject any attempt to use terrorism as an instrument of state policy. Infiltration into our territory and attempts to create mayhem will be dealt with a strong hand”.

The President said except the language of violence and the cult of evil, these terrorists have no religion and adhere to no ideology.

The statement comes against the backdrop of two terror strikes in Gurdaspur in Punjab and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir where militants infiltrated from Pakistan and killed security personnel and civilians.

While paying homage to the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives defending India, the President specially commended two villagers of Udhampur area “who boldly detained a hardened terrorist ignoring the risk to their own lives.”

The two civilians Rakesh Kumar Sharma and and Bikramjeet Singh captured Mohammed Naved Yukub, a Lashker-e-Taiba terrorist who was fleeing after carrying out an attack on BSF convoy along with his accomplice Mohammed Noman.

Two BSF personnel were killed while Noman was killed in retaliatory fire. Naved tried to escape from the scene and attempted to take Shama and Singh as a hostage. However, the duo outsmarted him and captured him.

He also talked about binding of nations with peace, friendship and cooperation and called for strengthening of connectivity, expand institutional capacity and enhance mutual trust to further regional cooperation.

“As we make progress in advancing our interests globally, India is also engaged in pro-actively promoting goodwill and prosperity in our immediate neighbourhood,” Mukherjee said.

He noted it was heartening that the long pending land boundary issue with Bangladesh has been finally resolved.

Pakistan registers protest over bail to Samjhauta Express blast accused Swami Aseemanand

After the National Investigation Agency(NIA) decided not to contest bail granted to Samjhauta Express blast accused Swami Aseemanand, Pakistan’s DG for SAARC summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad on Friday and lodged formal protest.

The government of Pakistan has said that they have serious reservations on the efficiency of the court proceedings in the case.

Aseemanand was released on a special leave permission earlier this week.

Blasts in two coaches of the Samjhauta Express on February 18, 2007, had claimed the lives of 68 people including 42 Pakistanis.
