NIA takes captured Pakistan terrorist to Delhi for interrogation

The captured Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Naved Yakub was taken to New Delhi from Jammu for further questioning.

Naved was shifted to Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Miran Sahib in Jammu and taken to New Delhi today by NIA team, police sources said here today.

NIA chief Sharad Kumar yesterday flew to Jammu to interrogate LeT’s Pakistani militant Naved, who was captured during an attack on a BSF bus last week.

Soon after arriving here at 11:30am, Kumar reached the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) at Miran Sahib on the outskirts of the city where he interrogated the militant, sources said.

At 13:10pm, he left for Udhampur district where a terrorist attack left two BSF personnel and one militant dead.

However, the NIA chief could not visit the attack site in Udhampur yesterday due to traffic snarls, but successfully visited the spot today.

Kumar yesterday also held meeting with police officers of Udhampur at Sheri Kashmir Police Academy, inspected the bus which was fired upon by the militants and personally spoke with the injured BSF jawans at military hospital in Udhampur yesterday.

He met some people connected with case and reported to have met army officers at Northern Command.

In a reply to reporters’ question while he was leaving from JIC at Miran sahib, Kumar said he had come to “ascertain the facts and review the case personally”.

Instead of facts we got fudge: Chidambaram hits back at Swaraj

Former union minister P Chidambaram on Thursday hit back at external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj saying she was hiding crucial facts on her help to tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi.

Chidamabaram asked Swaraj why she had not asked Modi to apply to the Indian high commission in UK for a temporary travel document if she wanted to help him.

If Sushma Swaraj wished to help Lalit Modi on purely humanitarian grounds, why did she not advise him to apply to the Indian high commission in London for a temporary Indian travel document valid for visiting only Portugal,” Chidambaram asked at a press conference.

He asked Swaraj why she thought Modi needed a British travel document instead of an Indian one.

Indicating that the government was hiding something, Chidambaram asked why Swaraj and finance minister Arun Jaitley were selectively quoting his letter to UK’s chancellor of the exchequer instead of releasing it in full.

“Instead of debate we got diatribe, instead of dialogue, we got lecture, instead of answers we got a sermon, instead of facts we got fudge,” he said referring to Swaraj’s speech in the Lok Sabha.

He said the ruling BJP “did everything except answering crucial questions that arose out of Sushma Swaraj’s intervention on behalf of Lalit Modi.”

Swaraj, who is facing opposition allegations of helping Lalit Modi get British travel documents for quid pro quo, had hit out against the Gandhi family in her speech on Friday.

Crimes against women, children show rising trend between 2012-14: Govt

The cases of crimes against women reported in the country jumped from a little over 2.44 lakh in 2012 to more than 3.34 lakh in 2014 while violations against children, too, witnessed an increase during the same period, Parliament was on Thursday told.

“As per the National Crime Records Bureau data, a total of 2,44,270, 3,09,546 and 3,34,188 cases (of crimes against women) were reported in the country during 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively, showing a rising trend.

“Similarly, a total of 38,172, 58,224 and 89,594 cases were reported (in the corresponding three years) under crimes against children, showing a rising trend,” Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

The minister said that the government recognises that the incidence of crimes against women and children cannot be checked unless the mindset of the people in general undergoes a change.

Continuous efforts to raise awareness among men and women through workshops, seminars, street plays are being undertaken at the district level.

“Advertisements in the press and electronic media to educate people about issues of domestic violence, child sex ratio and child marriage, etc. Are also being taken up. Platforms such as the International Women’s Day and the National Girl Child Day are being used to create awareness on issues related to women,” she said.

In another reply, Gandhi said that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered 74 complaints of exploitation and abuse of children at child care institutions over the last three years and the current year.

“Section 34(3) of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, mandates all child care institutions, including homes of various types, to be registered under the Act.

“The provisions of the JJ Act and the rules framed thereunder inter alia provide for various mechanisms, including inspection of CCIs, minimum standards of care, etc. to keep a check on the functioning of these institutions, especially to prevent cases of abuse and exploitation,” the minister further said.

Don’t take freedom for granted

Countries throughout the world celebrate Independence Day when they were freed from the oppression of foreign rule. As India celebrates its 68 years of Independence from the shackles of the British rule this week and enters its 69th year, we remember Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of ‘swaraj’ (self rule). Many of our freedom fighters gave up their lives to free the nation from the tyranny of the British rule in order to gain ‘swaraj’ or self-rule. No doubt, India got its political, social and economic freedom, yet slavery remains in subtle forms in various parts of the country.

Today, majority of the politicians in India make tall claims before the onset of elections but forget to fulfill them after coming to power. This only shows that our politicians are least bothered about the welfare of the common man who takes time from his busy schedule to exercise his franchisee. Prices of all commodities, including that of food grains have been sky-rocketing since the past few years. As a result of this, the common man has to bear the brunt of the price rise as his salary does not increase in tandem with the surging inflation.

It seems that the Gandhian ideals that inspired India’s independence struggles are no longer followed by the citizens today. Each and every one of us respects Mahatma Gandhi and proudly addresses him as the ‘Father of the Nation’, but no one is prepared to tread the path adopted by him. Although India has achieved Independence, it is one of the most corrupted and polluted nations in the world. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Majority of the States today are fighting among themselves and people, irrespective of caste, creed and colour are being persecuted for no fault of theirs, while the ministers and the politicians are misusing the common’s man hard-earned money which they contribute to the nation in the form of Professional Tax, Income Tax, etc. Today, 68 years later, people have lost faith in their leaders. India has a great potential ahead, but unless and until we rise above our differences and petty squabbles, it will not become a prosperous nation. Take a look at the UAE countries and also America. These countries are the most prosperous nations in the world because the Kings and Queens and Prime Ministers there care for their people, which is not the case in India.

Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire in India is said to have left a will to his son, Humayun which is still preserved in the State Museum of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The contents of the will are that Babur informs his son Humayun that India is the home of many religions and he has to be respectful and impartial towards all of them and ought not to burn, destroy or disturb any shrine of any religious order. But what is happening today? All religious structures and shrines are being destroyed, demolished or desecrated. Our present-day politicians do not care for the people and have no respect for the common man, especially the minority communities. In the name of religion, they destroy/desecrate religious structures and kill god’s holy people.
