In more trouble for the Aam Aadmi Party, an FIR has been registered against Delhi MLA Alka Lamba. A BJP lawmaker whose shop was targeted in the drive hit out at Ms Lamba and called her a “drug addict.”

The Delhi Police has filed a case of trespass against Ms Lamba after complaints by shopkeepers in her constituency Chandni Chowk.

The case was filed hours after CCTV footage from a sweet shop showed Ms lamba walking straight to the counter of a shop and toppling a billing machine. The man next to her then pushed everything off the table.

“What I did was in a fit of anger, I should learn restrain from my leader Arvind Kejriwal,” Ms Lamba told, adding, “I am not afraid of jail…if I have done anything wrong, send me to Tihar.”

On the other hand, Lamba had said on Sunday that she was attacked during an anti-drugs campaign in north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area and sustained head injuries.

Lamba started her anti-drugs drive around 5 am and was standing in front of Shiv Mishthan Bhandar, allegedly owned by a BJP MLA, when a man in the shop hurled a stone at her, national spokesman of AAP, Sanjay Singh, had said at a press conference.

The Chandni Chowk MLA was rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital, where she she was discharged after treatment.

At the same time, the police arrested a man identified as Jitin regarding the incident.

“Whether she (Alka Lamba) is helping people fight addiction or is addicted herself is a matter of investigation. Whatever you see on the CCTV footage is not the action of a normal person. She took hooligans along,” OP Sharma said. Alka Lamba said she had written to the Delhi Commission for Women against Mr. Sharma’s comments.

Alka Lamba’s campaign was compared by some to another controversial incident involving another AAP leader, former law minister Somnath Bharti. Last year, Somnath Bharti was accused of targeting African nationals in a midnight raid against an alleged sex and drugs racket in his constituency.

At least 11 people lost their lives and 50 others were injured when a stampede occurred at a temple in Jharkhand’s Deogarh district early on Monday.
According to police, a woman was among those killed.

“Ten men and a woman died as the devotees tried to overtake each other at around 4 am,” Amit Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Deogarh, said.

The stampede occurred near a Durga temple, known as Baidyanath Temple, at Belabagan More on Deogarh-Jassidih, about 350 kilometres from Ranchi, Civil Surgeon Diwakar Kamath said.

All the injured have been brought to the nearby Sadar hospital and are being treated, Kamath added.

According to police, more than 100,000 people were in a queue, many waiting since last night to get into the famous Baidyanath Temple, when the stampede occurred.

“Rumours of temple doors being opened spread in the morning. People started running skipping queues which led to the stampede,” said SN Pradhan, ADG, Law and Order.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said additional forces were being sent to the state for crowd control.

“There is a huge rush of devotees. They asked for additional forces. So I have told the Home Secretary to send Rapid Action Force there,” Singh said.

BJP MP from Godda Nishikant Dubey said steps will taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

During Shravan month of the Hindu calendar, more than 30 lakh people offer prayers at the Baidyanath Temple. On Mondays, the number goes up substantially and around two lakh people offer prayers.

The Madras High Court on Monday cancelled Dayanidhi Maran’s anticipatory bail plea in illegal telephone exchange case. Justice S Vaidyanathan has directed Maran to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) within three days.

“…Interim anticipatory bail is cancelled,” Justice S Vaidhyananthan said while granting Maran three days time to surrender before the CBI, which is investigating the case.

The Judge was passing the order after hearing arguments on the CBI plea for cancellation of Maran’s interim anticipatory bail and also on the former DMK minister’s petition that the interim bail may be made a permanent one.

The CBI had in July filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking cancellation of the interim anticipatory bail granted to the former Union telecom minister.

In the petition, the CBI had alleged that Maran, the prime accused in the case, was not cooperating with the investigation.

CBI has registered an FIR against Maran and others alleging that more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were provided at his residence and extended to his brother Kalanithi Maran’s SUN TV channel to enable its uplinking when he was Telecom Minister from 2004-07.

Apprehending arrest in the case, Maran had moved the court which on June 30 granted him anticipatory bail for six weeks subject to the condition that he appears before CBI on July 1 and cooperate in the investigation.

CBI later moved the high court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail on the ground that he was not cooperating in the investigation.

During the arguments in the previous hearings, Maran had contended that the CBI was seeking cancellation of his bail to malign him.

P S Raman, counsel for Maran, had contended that no evidence had been provided so far to prove the allegations and wondered how BSNL telephone lines could be used to telecast videos. “How can you telecast cinema with telephone lines?” he had asked.

Raman claimed that the CBI with an intention of maligning Maran was alleging he had not cooperated with the probe, that too, after the rejection of security clearance to the Sun Group, owned by his family, by the Home Ministry.

He also said while the alleged fraud took place in 2011 as per CBI, the FIR was filed only in 2013.
