Police brutality is on the rise in India – Part I

Instances of attacks by the police on innocent citizens and misuse of power by them are reported in the media almost every day. The police have vast powers, but these powers should be used to maintain law and order and render assistance to the public and not harass them unnecessarily. In India, policemen connive with organized gangs to extort huge sums of money by falsely implicating young models in cases of flesh trade. Recently, a male model was picked up by some eight policemen and later it was known that it was a well planned operation. A young female model was also trapped and robbed of her cash and gold ornaments.

On June 9, 2015, a policeman beat up a photographer by the name of Amay Kharad working for a leading daily who tried photographing Janhavi Gadkar, the woman who was drunk and caused an accident when she was driving her car. Amay Kharad’s camera worth Rs 4 lakh was also damaged in the process and the police have not been arrested nor the photographer compensated for the loss of his camera. In north India, it is still worse. Policemen drag suspects on the road with a rope or hammer them black and blue in public. They rough up drivers too who do not obey their supreme orders. Recently, in North India, a traffic policeman threw bricks at a lady driver of a two-wheeler just because she asked for a receipt for the fine paid. The lady suffered a fracture but the policeman was not arrested.

On Friday, May 22, 2015, at around 6.45 p.m., a young boy or around 20-21 years of age (I was a witness to this) was severely beaten up and his clothes torn in full public view by the traffic police constables of the Sion-Dharavi police chowki near Sion railway station just because he asked the police constables the reason for the nakabandi which was taking place that moment. The youth had to pay the price with a false case being registered against him. When the public went to help the boy out (including myself), we were all lathi-charged and also abused. On December 28, 2013, I too was falsely implicated by the traffic police constables of the Bhoiwada, Lalbaug police chowki at Parel in Mumbai just because I refused to pay them a bribe for carrying goods in the tempo in which I was travelling.

In India, policemen misuse their powers and take the law into their own hands just because they are supported by thugs and corrupt politicians. Activist, Arun Ferreira of Mumbai too suffered for several years (from 2007 to 2013) at the hands of the Nagpur police. He was arrested as the police thought he was the leader of a terror group. In prison, he was stripped naked and beaten up very badly on several occasions. He was also made to consume dog’s urine and sleep on the floor which was full of dog’s excreta. The food given to him to eat was also stale (The dal was watery and the rice full of stones). Sometimes, he was even denied food for days together.

Congratulations readers, Your favourite tabloid is entering 7th year

AVStarting from a humble beginning, Afternoon Voice has overcome various hurdles to complete six years. The tabloid was launched with an objective to promote parallel journalism. Media was always been owned by rich or capitalists as pseudo journalism had flourished from early times. During the initial stages, it was becoming a huge challenge for us to survive in the market. However, every employee including the management worked hard to oversee the day to day functioning of the newspaper right from covering news, editing, designing, printing and circulation to script a new success story. We have tried to dive in the various fields and tried to explore the potential talents from various phases of life. On the occasion of the sixth anniversary AV spoke to readers and renowned personalities who shared their views about the tabloid.

Vaidehi Taman, Chief Editor of Afternoon Voice said, “A big thanks to my readers, patrons and well-wishers. It’s great that we the Afternoon Voice completed six years and is entering in the seventh year. Happy anniversary. Thanks once again for encouraging us.”

Thank you readers for encouraging us

Fighting against all evil in the ‘Fourth Estate’ and keeping parallel journalism alive without any support system, is difficult but not impossible. Since morning messages, mails and calls were pouring in from readers and well-wishers but my dear staff forgot about the anniversary. Afternoon Voice has a big struggle story behind its success. I am trying to keep this media house and treat its staff as family members but due to different attitude of people working here, creating that bond is very difficult. We are small group and trying to manage the show in given limit. This success is dedicated to those hardcore workers of newspaper who literally live for it.

We talk about professional ethics, discipline and many other bookish things but practically this is not possible. People with low esteem and “just doing it for the sake” kind of attitude is the biggest hurdle in progress of such organisations. Internal enemies are much more dangerous than the outside obstacles. Politics, groupism, lack of will and compassion sucks entire energy. In spite of all odds, I boast of being a prompt and sincere pay master. My staff never suffered due to delay in salaries. They receive timely increments, treats, appreciations and gifts.

It’s been six years and we are constantly struggling to survive. Everything is fresh in my memory. The reason to start the endeavour, the reason to cope up with the trends, the challenges against the ethics, those threatening phone calls from the impotent and many other ways of spamming on social networks and the ever famous blogs against me; there have been millions of incidents and many of them I do not want to recall at all, which have tried to delude us in our way. We have skipped all hurdles and reached so far; the next level is still to arrive and we will go a long way.

Starting from year one, the first problems which we faced were finances. The lack of finances where one lady had to toss the gambling coin in the air, with a possibility of either getting it or losing it all and guess what, the ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ soon followed. It was totally a game of guts that we did. So far, media was always owned by the ‘rich’ or ‘capitalists’ who had their own backing and they relied on them. Thus, the basic idea of parallel media died and pseudo journalism flourished right from the early times. It was surely difficult for all of us to survive in the market. The ‘pehchaan’ required from distributing the newspapers to holding up the cameras, it was a true challenge against the odds but the challenge was accepted and it had to be won; after all, my only house was on mortgage for the gamble. Soon after the first year passed, we tried to dive in the various fields and tried to explore the potential talents from various phases of life.

Hence, our journey continued and year after year we finally completed six years. The honour of having a television media was about to succeed but, unfortunately, we again met the wrong people at right time and right place. Though, there was a slight set back but that was not enough to stop us. We have promised to go ahead and reach out to keep extending our own records, year after year. In the year 2012, our award event was honoured by his gracious hands of Late Balasaheb Thackeray. Thackerayji honoured us and accepted the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from us. It was truly an honour to have been blessed by the person who was a living legend and had times when he actually ruled the city. Soon, as life passes, even he made his glorious journey to the afterlife. We thought of following his principles of being honest to journalism, being unbiased and presenting the facts as it is, as much as possible and letting the masses judge us. There are people who have taken away powers from the people but we believe in giving power back to the people. Thus, we even came up with an idea of letting common man or the citizens of India speak up and give us news about anything and everything that they feel is happening with factual evidences. Thus, citizen journalism started flourishing. With power back to the people, it feels like we have created a revolution. There were gimmicks to stop us, various hurdles were created like income tax raid in our office, which made us wait for about three days and this happened thrice. We kept to our words but let them do their work peacefully. By now, even the income tax office must have our office address in their mind. The event of coming out clean from various challenges itself was the proof that we need not give more proof of our honesty and dedication. Honesty comes with a huge price and we are constantly investing in it, without hesitation. Such things do not affect us anymore, which includes RTI for what we do.

Wise once said, if you speak a lie, you need to remember and be smarter but if you speak the truth, you just have to remember the event and rest the God stands right next to you. With high regards to my readers who have kept us strong and high respect to people who have taken the time out and contributed in our journey, thanks is a small word for them. We have pulled up our socks with this 6th year; we stand up with the pride of being what we are today and will continue carrying on with it. Any hurdles may come but we are committed to being… unstoppable.

I would like to thank all my readers and well-wishers for being such a great support in this journey.

Maharashtra denies Tiger Memon’s ‘revenge’ call

TigerThe Maharashtra government has denied that absconding mafia don Mushtaque alias Tiger Memon allegedly called up his mother and threatened to avenge his brother Yakub Memon’s hanging last week, top officials said on Friday.

The Mumbai police, too, denied any such conversation as having taken place.

“We want to clarify that we don’t have such intercepted conversation and we also clarify that such said transcript is not of Mumbai police,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni in a statement.

Tiger Memon purportedly had a conversation with his mother Hanifa Memon at her Mahim residence here on July 30 around 5.30 am – barely an hour before Yakub was hanged in Nagpur Central Jail.

In the conversation with a weeping Hanifa, Tiger Memon allegedly “vowed” to “avenge” his brother’s death and “make them pay for it”.

The newspaper has stated it is in possession of the transcript of the entire three-minute conversation conducted over the Internet, with the call bouncing from one IP address to another, making it difficult to track.

It is not clear who recorded the mother-son dialogue.

Pawar to tour drought-stricken Marathwada

SharadNCP president Sharad Pawar will tour the Marathwada region of Maharashtra from August 15 to take a stock of the drought situation, the party said.

State NCP chief Sunil Tatkare said at a press conference here that Pawar will unveil a statue of the late Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, in Latur on August 15 before starting his three-day tour.

The government did not heed the opposition’s demand for complete loan waiver for farmers during the monsoon session.

Cloud-seeding experiment had failed and most of Marathwada was dry, he added.

Tatkare also announced the new office-bearers of state NCP and members of working committee. Umesh Patil who headed the youth wing of NCP has been made the general secretary, while MLC Niranjan Davkhare has been appointed as president of the youth wing in his place.

To a question about Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation elections later this year, Tatkare said the party would have a discussion with Congress, and if it was willing, an alliance could be discussed.

To a question about ‘demotion’ of former MP and ex-chief of Mumbai NCP Sanjay Patil who has been now appointed as the chief of north-east Mumbai district, party leader Sachin Ahir said NCP wanted to strengthen the organisation at the block level, and Patil wanted to work for it.

Ahir also said that NCP would file a PIL against the illegal Shiv vada stalls (backed by ruling Shiv Sena) in Mumbai.

“There are about 230 such stalls. If illegal hawkers are evicted, why no action is being taken against these stalls,” he asked.

Abu Jundal on hunger strike, wants to be shifted from ‘anda’ cell

JudalSuspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, an alleged mastermind of the 26/11 terror attacks, has gone on hunger strike in the Arthur Road Jail demanding that he be shifted from ‘anda’ cell to a normal prison, police said today.

Jundal, who was allegedly behind some major bomb blasts in several cities of the country, has been on a hunger strike since yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

The decision to change an inmate’s cell is solely taken by the concerned jail authorities, police said. Senior jail officials take decision in such matters after discussing with higher prison authorities, they said.

‘Anda’ cell is a small high security cell used to keep hardcore criminals in isolation.

A native of Beed in Maharashtra, Jundal was arrested in Delhi following his deportation from Saudi Arabia in 2012.  The NIA had chargesheeted Jundal for allegedly conspiring to carry out terror activities in India, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and Aurangabad arms haul case.

In Maharashtra, Jundal is accused of being involved in Aurangabad arms haul, 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune and the Nashik Police Academy attack conspiracy.

As per a charge sheet filed against him, in May 2006 Jundal fled to Bangladesh where he was received by an ISI agent. He then used a boarding pass issued in a fictitious name to board a PIA flight to Pakistan.

Jundal taught Hindi to the 26/11 attackers during their training in Pakistan, according to police. The November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks left 166 dead and many more injured.

SC allows Mumbai Metro to hike fare upto Rs. 110

In what is not likely to go down well with the Mumbaikars, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s plea seeking freezing of the existing fare structure of Mumbai Metro.

The apex court’s ruling will allow Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra)-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) to increase the fare of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro to Rs. 110 from the present Rs. 40.

The Fare Fixation Committee had recently permitted a fare in the band of Rs. 10-110.

In April, a three-member committee of the central government had recommended the fare hike after analysing all aspects, including cost to operate the line and alternate modes of transport.

The recommendations were made after considering the reports of four expert committees appointed by the central government earlier.

Importantly, the FFC recommended fare is lower than the fare proposed by these experts committees.

The current fare for the city’s first – and so far only Metro – (presently 11.4 km long) is Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 30 and Rs. 40 depending on the distance.

MMOPL is not strictly comparable with other Metros in the country because other Metros have the advantage of concessional interest and lower power tariff, whereas MMOPL is paying commercial rate of interest and a very high electricity cost.
