Thane Municipal body to evacuate families living in ‘dangerous’ buildings

In the wake of the recent building collapse that claimed 11 lives, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Commissioner has directed officials to evacuate families living in structures categorised as extremely dangerous in the district.

TMC Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal had called an emergency meeting with officials yesterday and directed them to evacuate residents in “extremely dangerous” buildings and also take necessary action with regard to 2,500 “dangerous” residential buildings that are either in dilapidated condition or are more than 30 years old.

The commissioner also directed the housing societies (owners) to carry structural audit of buildings, done by approved auditors, which have completed a life of more than 30 years. If the societies or owners fail to get it done, the corporation will levy penalty on them.

There are 58 buildings that fall under extremely dangerous category. Of these, 38 have been evacuated, while fresh directions have been issued to get the remaining buildings vacated at the earliest, said Jaiswal.

Nearly 2,500 buildings fall under “dangerous” category and an estimated of nearly 25,000 families reside in them. The corporation will initiate necessary action like evacuation or razing against these residential buildings, he said.

At least 11 people, including four of a family, were killed and seven injured when a 50-year-old building collapsed in B Cabin area near Thane Railway Station in the wee hours of Tuesday.

A three-member committee has been set up to study into the causes of the building crash. Earlier, a three-storey building collapsed in Thakurli at Kalyan, claiming nine lives.

‘Pakistani terrorist killed in Udhampur encounter was Hafiz Saeed’s guard’

'Pakistani-terroristPakistani terrorist Mohammad Naved alias Usman, who was caught following an attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, continues to sing during interrogation by National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths.

Naved has been in Kashmir since June and had enough local support. He even spent almost 40 days in a LeT hideout at Khrew in south Kashmir.

Disclosing his journey from Pakistan to India, Naved told interrogators that he started from his launching pad at Halan in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 27 along with Nouman, Okasha and Mohammad Bhai of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in northwest Pakistan.

Nouman was, in fact, a personal security guard of Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed.

However, there are conflicting reports on when the group started from PoK. As per another report, the group launched from Kota in PoK on June 2-3. That area is roughly located around Tanghdar area on the Indian side.

As per the initial account available, the group reached the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara on June 2 and cut the fence to enter the Indian territory.

The group then switched on a GPS device to find their way and walked 18 kilometres to reach Baba Reshi at Tangmarg in Baramulla district on June 7. Here, they were received by one Ubaid, a Pakistani militant of the LeT.

On June 9, the group travelled to Awantipura near Chursoo and stayed there in a house for four days.

All the four then split and Naved went to Khrew area of Pulwama district. He remained there for almost over a month before moving to Kakapora area of the same district. He stayed there for almost six to seven days at two different locations.

From Kakapora, Naved was sent to Khudwani area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir. This is the last district on Srinagar-Jammu Highway that falls in the Kashmir Valley.

In Khudwani, Naved met the LeT chief for central and south Kashmir named Abu Qasim – a Pakistani militant commander who has been active for many years and has so far managed to escape security forces despite being involved in many encounters.

It was in Khudwani that Naved re-grouped with Nouman with whom he had split in Baba Reshi.

The terrorists then left for Pulwama on a small truck on July 23 and were intercepted by police but managed to escape.

Naved was given the task to carry out the fidayeen attack in Udhampur by Abu Qasim.

On August 4, Naved and Nouman travelled to Ramban in a tipper from where they bought two bags and eatables.

SC judge Dipak Misra, who rejected Yakub Memon’s curative petition, receives threat letter

Supreme Court judge Dipak Misra, who dismissed the petition and delivered the final order on 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon’s death warrant leading to his execution, has received an anonymous threat letter.

Reports say that the threat letter was received by Justice Misra’s guard.

A case has been registered against unidentified persons at the Tughlaq Road Police Station.

After the SC verdict, the government had increased the security of Justices Dipak Misra, Prafulla Chandra Pant and Amitava Roy.

Justice Misra headed the three-judge bench, which had upheld the death warrant against the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict.

After the verdict, the number of police personnel at their homes had been increased besides increase in patrolling by Delhi Police around their homes’ vicinity.

The unprecedented hearing held at the apex court at 3 am on July 30, in which the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict’s last ditch attempt to avert his execution was rejected, was the first of its kind in the SC’s history and has been generally appreciated by the legal fraternity.

The execution of Yakub, whom the Supreme Court had described as the “driving spirit” behind the 12 coordinated blasts on March 12, 1993, that left 257 dead and 713 wounded, was preceded by a vigorous last-gasp attempt by his lawyers to prevent the hanging that continued through July 29 and spilled over to the early hours of July 30.

Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central Prison on July 30 at 7 am, the hour set by the TADA court for execution of his death warrant.

Lalitgate: Sushma got money from Lalit Modi, alleges Rahul; Sonia says EAM an expert in theatrics

Accusing External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of keeping her ministry in dark over Lalitgate, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the former over her emotional clarification in the Lok Sabha, and said that Sonia Gandhi would have never done the same thing.

“It was a very nice speech, hollow, but it sounded very nice. Sushma ji said that Sonia ji would have done the same thing. As her son, I can tell Sushma ji that Sonia ji would not have done the same thing,” Rahul said.

“Secondly, whenever there is some stealing that happens, secrecy is maintained by the thief. In this case, Sushma ji has maintained full secrecy. Nobody in the ministry other than Sushma Swaraj ji knew about this decision. After this decision, the UK Government changed their position,” he added.

The Congress vice-president further asked Swaraj to tell the nation exactly how much money she received from Lalit Modi so that he stays out of jail.

“Whenever there is a robbery, a financial transaction takes place. There has been a financial transfer here as well. Sushma ji`s family has received money from Lalit Modi. She should tell the nation exactly how much money Lalit Modi has paid her family to keep himself out of jail,” he said.

Swaraj had yesterday also insisted that she had made “no request or recommendation” to the UK Government for Lalit Modi`s travel documents but had left the decision to Britain.

She also said that she had not helped Lalit Modi but his cancer-stricken wife.

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said that the External Affairs Minister is an expert at “indulging in theatrical politics”.
