Soon, class XII marks may not be counted for admissions to central engineering institutes

Thousands of students preparing for examinations conducted by central government-run engineering institutes, barring IITs, may soon not require their Class XII boards marks for admissions, if the Union HRD Ministry accepts a proposal in this regard.

According to a report published in The Times of India on Tuesday, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) is soon expected to make a recommendation to the Union HRD Ministry in this regard.

The report also said that the competitive exam may be held a bit earlier next year as the authorities require additional time for the admission process.

The CSAB is soon expected to make a recommendation in this regard to the HRD Ministry keeping in mind the delay in submission of Class XII scores by the boards to CBSE and glitches in the scores of some students during this year’s admission process.

As per the reports, the CSAB is expected to recommend admissions only on the basis of JEE (Main) scores, which implies 40% weightage given to Class XII scores for admissions to NITs and other government-funded technical institutes (other than IITs) may be scrapped.

CSAB, part of the joint seat allocation authority, will make the recommendation in this year’s admission report.

MP Singh, coordinator of the CSAB from NIT-Patna, who was also part of JoSAA 2015, was quoted as saying, “Many of the 47 higher secondary boards in the country are not sending their scores on time to the CBSE. Keeping in mind students’ interests, we will be asking the apex body to conduct admissions only on the basis of the JEE (Main) scores.”

My husband concerned about ‘beautiful women’ because I am average-looking: Somnath Bharti’s wife

After facing criticism from all quarters, former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti has now become the target of his wife over his controversial remarks on women.

Bharti had on Monday said that if the AAP government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is granted control of the Delhi Police, then they would make sure “beautiful women” are able to go out even at midnight.

“I am fully confident that if Delhi government is given full freedom (over security), beautiful women will be able to go out even after midnight without any fear,” the AAP MLA said. “We will provide a fully-secure Delhi…” he added.

However, the remarks have generated heat not just in Delhi’s political circles but also at his home.

Bharti’s efforts to explain and defend the comments have clearly failed and his infuriated wife has accused the AAP MLA of not being concerned about her.

“I am an average-looking woman, maybe that’s why I was ill treated by him,” Lipika Mitra. She was referring to the domestic violence complaint she had filed against Bharti recently.

“He clearly isn’t concerned about my security but only about the security of ‘beautiful’ women,” Lipika added.

Four women MPs complain against BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri’s abusive, sexist language

In yet another trouble for the ruling BJP, which is facing a combative Opposition over the suspension of Congress MPs, four women MPs have complained about the ‘abusive’ and ‘sexist’ language used by BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri in Parliament.

According to a report published in The Economic Times on Tuesday, the women MPs have lodged a complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker that Bidhuri used foul language against them during the Opposition’s protest in the Lower House on Monday, which resulted in the suspension of 25 Congress MPs.

In their complaint to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, the women MPs alleged that the BJP MP used highly abusive language against them when there was commotion in the House.

According to the report, Ranjeet Ranjan, Congress MP from the Supaul Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar, officially lodged a complaint with the Speaker about Bidhuri’s ‘abusive’ language as soon as the House was adjourned for the day.

“He has been abusive with me at least three to four times earlier as well. There was this instance during the Budget speech discussion when I talked of the need to give benefits to single women and he turned around saying I should divorce my husband first and then such benefits can be given to me. Today also his jibes continued. I have been ignoring this for a while but he is using language against women that is unbecoming of a MP,” Ranjeet Ranjan was quoted as saying.

NCP MP Supriya Sule, Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev, Trinamool’s Arpita Ghosh from Balurghat constituency and CPI(M)’s PK Shreemathi Teacher, Lok Sabha MP from Kannur, accompanied Ranjan to the Speaker to complain against Bidhuri’s intemperate language.

Meanwhile, Bidhuri, the BJP MP from Delhi’s Tughlaqabad South constituency, denied the allegations completely.

“I have no personal fight with them and I used no such language. They are using these allegations as a diversionary tactic. They were creating a nuisance in Parliament and we opposed it. Let them pull out old recordings and show when I have used abusive language. I am a three-time Vidhan Sabha member and you can pull out recording and ask Congress members I have worked with if I have ever been abusive,” Bidhuri was quoted as saying.

Amendment of Child Labour law

While walking to the station in early morning, I see lot of young boys and girls and even older ladies smartly walk past me. They are in a hurry to board train for reaching their work places which is a good sign. Earlier, labour unions behaved as if they were superior and others who don’t operate a machine are inferior. The people working in agricultural fields were also technically not considered as labour even though, the men, women and young children toiled hard. However, times are changing and I have read reports that even the cattle will get a unique chip that will hold it’s identity and milk yielding capacity. Why not, they too deserve recognition.

In major changes to the child labour law, the Cabinet approved allowing employment of children below 14 years in ‘non-hazardous’ family enterprises, entertainment industry and sporting events after school hours, while relaxing the penal action against the parents. The original Child Labour Law banned employment of children below 14 in only 18 hazardous industries. The amendments also make it clear that children between 14 and 18 years will also not be allowed to work in hazardous industries.

While child rights activists have been demanding a complete prohibition of child labour, the government said “it would be prudent to also keep in mind the country’s social fabric and socio-economic conditions” before taking any such decision”.

The government has done well by keeping young persons from 14-18 working in family business (not hazardous) out of the purview of Child Labour Act. It is true that many boys and girls in age group of 14-15 are working hard and gaining experience on agricultural fields and in enterprises supervised by family members. Once a while dry docking in China, I noticed an old man removing our fuel pumps for overhauling and a young boy assisting him.

This boy must have been around 14 years of and he was learning work from his old father. He will eventually turn successor to his father’s business and won’t depend on “sarkari naukri”. Skills are to be taught from an early age. I was reading a report where a young boy jumped into water to rescue a young girl. These young boys will become champion swimmers tomorrow. Few years back, a bright young boy in the age between and 13-14 used to work around our land. One day while walking outside our fences, he showed me the marijuana plant which I was unable to recognize. This boy could ride a buffalo and cycle with equal ease. The young girls in the age ranging from 13 to 14 work at home and help their mothers for cooking. They also attend schools and excel in studies. Working from a young age makes a person more proficient.

Emily Blunt may star in ‘Captain Marvel’

Emily-BluntActress Emily Blunt will reportedly play Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the upcoming female-led superhero movie. Co-host El Mayimbe, in latest ‘Meet the Movie Press’ episode, revealed that the 32-year-old star would be a very likely candidate to take titular role, reported Ace showbiz.

Back in April, a report surfaced that the studio wanted Charlize Theron to play the lead female character. However, there has been no confirmation about the casting as of now. Danvers first debuted in 1968’s ‘Marvel Super-Heroes’. She was a US Air Force security chief who is transformed into Captain Marvel following an explosion that involved Kree technology.

Since there has not been any director attached to the project, it seems like the studio will look for a director first before they start their casting search. Kevin Feige will produce the movie while Nicole Perlman(‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) and Meg LeFauve (‘Inside Out(2015)’) are writing the script. ‘Captain Marvel’ is slated for a release in the US on November 2, 2018.

Pay depends on success ratio at box office, says Richa Chadha

Richa-ChaddhaThere is much hue and cry over gender disparity in the film industry with unequal pay becoming a hot topic for debate. But actress Richa Chadha says remuneration has nothing to do with gender, but depends on how one’s films fare at the box office.

“It is very simple. It all depends how many tickets you sell at the box office. It has nothing to do with gender. If two people are equal in terms of their work and then an actor gets paid more, then that is stupid. If you are equal at the pull of the box office, then you should be paid at par,” Richa said.

Richa, who is being lauded for her internationally acclaimed film ‘Masaan’, also emphasised that she cannot compare her pay scale with superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

“I can’t compare myself with Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan. They do multi-crore films. And they can get that kind of business in the film industry, so they deserve the price they get,” she added.

The actress, who started her journey in the world of glitz and galmour with ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ in 2008, went on to gain momentum with her acts in critically acclaimed films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’.
