With one-para CV, Gajendra Chauhan was selected FTII Chief

Gajendra-ChauhanIn response to an RTI query, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has said that Gajendra Chauhan – who was appointed by the government as the chief of the Film and Television Institute of India, was selected on the basis of a one-para CV. It also suggests that the only notable achievement Mr. Chauhan mentioned on the document was that of playing the role of Yudhisthir in the TV serial Mahabharat.

“Gajendra Chauhan is an actor who is best known for his portrayal of the eldest Pandava ‘Yudhishthir’ in the Mahabharat (TV series). He has worked in around 150 movies and over 600 TV serials,” the RTI noting said.
The RTI applicant had sought information regarding the educational and professional qualifications of Gajendra Chauhan, and the basis on which he was considered for his selection as President, Film and Television Institute of India, among other queries.

Mr. Chauhan has been appointed President of FTII Society and Chairman of its Governing Council by the NDA government.

The 281-page record provided by the Ministry includes details of resumes of others who were proposed for the post of FTII President. The only reference to Mr. Chauhan’s qualification is a one paragraph summary.

The file notings related to the appointment of Mr. Chauhan suggests that many stalwarts of Indian cinema including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Jahnu Baruah, Raju Hirani, Jaya Bachchan, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Ramesh Sippy, Govind Nihalani and Aamir Khan were considered for the post earlier.

These names were proposed by the FTII for the post of President in 2014, the notings received under the Right to Information Act show.

Apart from the single paragraph file noting, which spoke of Mr Chauhan’s portrayal of Yudhishthir and the number of films and serials he has acted in, the Ministry did not provide any details of his body of work or his CV that were considered ahead of his appointment as FTII chief.

Though the applicant had also sought copies of all the reasons recorded for Mr Chauhan’s selection, the information provided by the Ministry does not show any reasons in defence of his controversial appointment as the FTII President. The Ministry was also silent on why he was preferred above the doyens of Indian cinema whose names were once proposed by FTII for appointment as its chief.

Several eminent actors including Anupam Kher, Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan among others have come out in support of the agitating students of FTII and openly opposed Mr Chauhan’s appointment.

Ex-CBI chief backs death for Memon, seeks tough anti-terror laws

Supporting death penalty for terrorists, former CBI Director Joginder Singh has accused Yakub Memon, hanged for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, and his supporters of misusing India’s liberal laws and called for an overhaul of anti-terror legislations.

In an article in RSS organ “Organizer”, the former CBI Director hit out at rights activists opposing death sentence to Memon, saying they did so for the sake of publicity.

He also made a strong case for change in anti-terror laws saying India was unable to fight extremists because the then Government in 2004 had repealed anti-terror laws in the name of vote bank politics.

“India has failed to tackle terrorism for the simple reason that all terrorism laws were repealed by the then Government in 2004, for appeasement, vote bank politics… There is no effective law to deal with the terrorism in our country… It is rather overdue to change the policies, laws and approach, which has failed to deliver.

Yakub Memon case shows, how the terrorists use every opportunity, to misuse the liberal laws of India. Despite being slated to be hanged on July 30, he filed a case in the Supreme Court and to delay, sent a mercy petition to the President, which had been rejected,” Singh said.

Coming down heavily on “the open and tacit supporters” of Memon, Singh urged the Government “not to bother about such people” saying, “Most Indians, irrespective of religion, will support the Government if it can convey it means business.”

Singh also launched a scathing attack on activists arguing against death penalty for terrorists saying, “There are more unpaid advisers and so-called rights activists, than the problem, the country has faced.

Instead of ensuring good governance, such people are finding fault with everything. Since they can’t criticise the judiciary, they egg the criminals to go on approaching apex curt again and again to delay the cases. Obviously, it is for the purpose of getting publicity in the media.”

The former chief of CBI, Joginder Singh quoted former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who had on July 15, 1985 in a speech to the American Bar Association called for “starving the terrorist and the hijacker of the oxygen of publicity and asking the media to agree among themselves to a voluntary code of conduct… Under which they would not say or show anything which could assist the terrorists’ morale or their cause…”

Coast Guard seize chemical-laden drums from Arabian Sea

The Indian Coast Guard recovered nine iron drums containing some chemical after they were sighted afloat in the Arabian Sea close to Mumbai.

During a routine air surveillance, the Coast Guard personnel in a helicopter on Saturday sighted few iron drums floating in the sea, south west of Korlai Fort near Kashid Beach, about 50 kms from here.

On further reconnaissance, about 12 drums (200 litres barrel each) were sighted. The helicopter crew investigated the nearest coastline and noticed a few drums washed ashore.

In this regard, a Coast Guard ship named Achook, which was on coastal security patrol off Mumbai, was also diverted to ascertain the situation at the sea.

The Coast Guard team along with local police personnel of Revadanda reached the site and recovered nine drums along the shores of Barshivi, Kurali and Revadanda, a Coast Guard press release said.

The Coast Guard, in a joint effort with local police, were able to retrieve these drums and vigil is maintained for retrieval of the other drums afloat, it said.

“On checking, we found beef inside the truck and arrested four persons from the spot,” he added.

BJP protests against Kamat’s remarks on Smriti Irani

BJP workers, including the women members staged a protest outside the residence of Congress leader Gurudas Kamat over his alleged offensive remarks against HRD Minister Smriti Irani.

Kamat, however, claimed that he had not made any derogatory comments and only raised the question of Irani’s “educational inability” considering the plum post she has been given in the government.

Shouting slogans, the party workers staged a protest in suburban Chembur where former Union Minister Kamat resides and demanded an immediate written apology.

“We challenge Kamat that if he had the guts to pass derogatory remarks against women, then he should have guts to face the consequences too. But he did not have courage to face our protest,” said Shalaka Salvi, head of BJP’s women wing of the city.

“Until Kamat does not tender an unconditional apology for his derogatory comments, we would protest wherever he (Kamat) holds meetings,” she said.

BJP Mumbai unit’s vice president Mohit Kamboj alleged that Kamat is making such remarks to keep himself in the limelight as he has been sidelined by the current Mumbai Congress chief, Sanjay Nirupam.

“Kamat is desperate to come into the picture and this is why he has targeted Iraniji to get media attention,” Kamboj claimed.

Reacting over the row, Kamat said, “I have always been respectful towards women. What I said has been quoted by Irani herself that she worked with ‘McDonalds’.”

“My statement was carried in a distorted version by some sections of the media,” he said.

“I was asking question to PM (Narendra) Modi on why he has given such an important portfolio to Irani, when she herself has landed in certificate controversy, what is wrong in it?” the leader asked.

Speaking in Rajasthan last week, Kamat had referred to Irani as a “poncha lagane waali” (cleaning woman) while questioning the minister’s credentials to hold the charge of the education portfolio.

Yesterday, the National Commission for Women had asked the Congress leader to explain within a week his alleged offensive remarks against Irani that have invited criticism.

However, Kamat said, “As of now I have not received any notice so far and will see when I get it.

As many as 227 children were reunited with their parents last month under the ‘Muskan’ programme of Thane Police.

Manohar Parrikar assures Centre’s help to expose scams in Goa

Manohar-ParrikarTerming the Louis Berger bribery case as just the “tip of the iceberg”, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said the Centre will extend all possible assistance to expose the “scams” during Congress rule in Goa.

“This (Louis Berger scam) is just the tip of the iceberg. It is time to bring out all the Congress scams in the open,” the BJP leader and former Goa Chief Minister said.

Parrikar said that while the law enforcement agencies will do their work, the party should keep up pressure on former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, who headed the Congress-led government when the alleged bribery scam took place in 2009, and he should be “made to suffocate over the scam.”

“They will be exposed. I guarantee that I will offer whatever help is needed from the Centre, right from the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and CBI to expose them,” he said.

Parrikar pointed out that it was clearly said in the US District Court order that the company officials have paid bribes to the then Goa ministers.

“Now there are only two (former) ministers in the zone of consideration. No other ministers are related to this. PWD (minister) is natural, but along with PWD minister there is also Finance (minister) who has to release the money. If he does not release the money, this cannot happen,” Parrikar said.

Attacking Kamat, he said to the party workers: “Put him in a corner and ensure that he is made to suffocate over the scam.”

During the meeting here yesterday, the BJP also resolved that all the acts of corruption during the former Congress government’s rule should be investigated.

Louis Berger has been charged with bribing Indian officials with several crores of rupees to win two major water developmental projects in Goa and Guwahati.

The alleged bribery of USD 976,630 for a Goa project included kickbacks to a minister, the details of which have not been disclosed by the US Department of Justice.

All the tenders for the JAICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) project, of which Louis Berger was the consultant, were issued as per Central Public Works Department prescribed norms.

Asaram shown as ‘saint’ in Rajasthan school book

Rape accused self-styled godman Asaram Bapu features in a chapter on saints in a Class III textbook in the district, sharing space with Vivekananda, Mother Teresa and Ramakrishna Paramhans.

Yoga guru Ramdev is also included in the list of saints in the moral education and GK textbook ‘Naya Ujala’ which is taught in many schools of the district.

The chapter also has pictures of Guru Nanak, Kabir, Meerabai and Shankaracharya and the children have been asked to identify them including Asaram, who is in a Jodhpur jail after being arrested in a rape case.

The book has been supplied by a Delhi-based publisher Gurukul Education Books.

Asked about the inclusion of Asaram’s name, a representative of the publishing house said when the book was published; there was no case against Asaram.

“Now we are withdrawing the books from the market and are preparing a new edition of the book sans Asaram”, he said.

When officials of the education department were asked about the book, they expressed ignorance about the matter.

However, they said notices would be issued to the school authorities where the textbook is part of the curriculum.

Asaram is in jail since August 2013 on charges of sexual assault. He was arrested after a 16-year-old girl lodged a police complaint, alleging that the self-styled godman sexually assaulted her at his ashram in Jodhpur.

Revelation in Gurdaspur attack: Terrorist was wearing ‘Made in Pakistan’ gloves

The panel of doctors conducting the post-mortem of the three terrorists found a ‘Made in Pakistan’ label on the hand glove worn by one of the militants. The report cited  the doctors’ copy on the ‘external appearance’ of the terrorist.

The police source also says that they had initially missed the label while doing their own search. But the doctors found the label while making the inventory. It was only during close examination of the clothes the terrorists were wearing did the doctors find a ‘Made in Pakistan’ tag intact in one glove of a terrorist.

The probe has picked up pace following a top brass meeting held to strategise a way to accelerate the investigation. The Punjab Police are working in collaboration with the Intelligence Bureau, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF, the report added.

Preliminary analysis of the two Global Positioning System (GPS) sets found with them indicated that they had infiltrated from Pakistan by crossing the Ravi river through Mastgarh village in the Gurdaspur sector of the international border. They will now carry out a detailed analysis of the sets.

The investigators are also going to look at how they managed to get hold of the US-made night vision device. According to the initial probe, they believe device which has a unique number (032008 80063 – A325) along with markings such as “warning” and “US government property”was originated in Afghanistan.

They are also trying to find out how the attackers got access to the rocket-propelled grenade launchers. The weapon had ‘ready to launch’ status when it was found. The police source was quoted as saying, “This was placed in a direction…from where the major police offensive was launched. It seems the terrorists wanted to lob this rocket as a last resort to flee from the site of the encounter. Every aspect of this rocket launcher is being examined,” a source said.

The Gurdaspur attack took place on July 27, 2015. The terrorists had attacked passengers in a moving bus and stormed a police station, killing seven persons, including an SP. All the terrorists were gunned down after a day-long operation by Punjab Police and elite commandos of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).

The Centre had asserted that the terrorists had infiltrated from Pakistan to carry out the strike. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who made a statement in the Rajya Sabha on terror attack  said, “Preliminary analyses of GPS data indicates that the terrorists had infiltrated from Pakistan through the area near Tash in Gurdaspur district, where the Ravi river enters Pakistan.”
