Filmmaker Remo D’Souza wants his upcoming Tiger Shroff-starrer superhero film “Flying Jat” to be an answer to Hollywood’s action movies.
Also starring Jacqueline Fernandez, “Flying Jat” will see a Punjabi superhero for the first time in India.
Though the “ABCD 2” director feels the subject is challenging, he wants to raise the bar of superhero films in India through the movie.
“The film will see the first Punjabi superhero. It is a big subject. It is something I have to prove it again. With ‘ABCD 2’, I had to prove that dancing could be of a certain level and with this film I have to show that a superhero film can be made in India like this,” said Remo.
“Like we always see ‘Avengers’, ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Superman’ and I want to take this film on that level so that Indian people think that we also have our superhero film. It is my answer to the foreign superhero movies,” he said.
The filmmaker is happy with the way the movie is shaping up and looking forward to its second schedule in mid-August.
Praising Tiger, Remo said he wanted to launch the “Heropanti” actor and is happy he is finally getting to direct the young star.
“I know Tiger before he came into films. I wanted to launch him but he got launched in ‘Heropanti’, which was good as well. Then I thought I would do second film with him but his second is ‘Baaghi’. I am happy his third film is with me,” the director said.
Remo, who choreographed Jacqueline in her earlier films, said he knew from the beginning she would become the star she is today.
“Jacqueline is outstanding, she is amazing. I did songs for her first film and since then I knew she would do well and she is,” he said.
“Flying Jat”, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, is slated to release in 2016.
Weak monsoon and hoarding responsible for onion price rise in the city.
There has been a sharp rise in the prices of onion in the city as wholesale rate of the commodity have shot up 70 per cent in Lasalgaon, India’s largest wholesale onion market. The average price has leaped 54 percent in two weeks to 2,550 rupees per 100 kg, its highest since November 2013 and retail prices of onion have increased in the range of Rs 35-40 per kg in the city. Thus rising onion prices will bring tears into the eyes of Mumbaikars. Onion is a useful ingredient which is used in the preparation of various dishes. Price rise of onion will definitely become a political issue as it had played a vital role in bringing down the Delhi and Rajasthan government in 1998 and the central government in 1980. Opposition always try to derive mileage out of this issue and up the ante against the government.
After China, India is the second largest producer of onion and enjoys 19% share of the global onion production. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the chief onion producing states in India and contribute near about 45% of the total production of onion in India. Maharashtra alone contributes around 30 per cent of the nation’s total onion production.
“Any rise from this level will exert pressure on the consumer price index inflation. The onion, being an essential item, evokes sharp reactions from the households and even the political parties. Thus, there is a need for being watchful,” Assocham’s Secretary General D S Rawat said.
The prices in both wholesale and retail markets have been rising in recent weeks due to sluggish supply of good quality onion in the wake of the crop getting damaged in storage across major growing states, including Maharashtra.
“Prices could jump further as a mismatch between demand and supply is expected to worsen due to weak monsoon rains”, said Changdev Holkar, former director of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation.
The government has held the hoarders responsible for the onion price rise. Expecting further increase in onion prices, the government has already increased MEP of the commodity to USD 425 per tonne and extended by another year the ban on hoarding of the key kitchen staple beyond a prescribed limit.
“The major reason for the shortage is the damage of rabi crop last season due to unseasonal rains in March-April. Also, replanting of kharif crop is likely to get delayed due to deficiency of rains in July,” said Atul Shah, director, Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee, Pimpalgaon.
“If onion prices continue to rise then it will definitely affect my household budget. We may even discontinue buying onions for some time until the prices become stable” said Rita Singh a Kandivali resident.
“Last year there was no rise in onion prices as the Maharashtra assembly elections were just round the corner. The government had intervened at the right time to prevent the price hike. But this time around they are least bothered about the onion price rise as no election is happening in the state” said Arvind Sethi, a Borivali resident.
The Centre is also planning to import onion, though in limited quantity, to boost the domestic availability. Much of the Rabi (winter) onion crop is stored to meet the demand in lean period. But in 2015, most of the onion kept in storage is of poor quality as the Rabi crop got damaged due to unseasonal rains in early March.
The country’s onion production is estimated to have declined to 189.23 lakh tonnes in the 2014-15 crop year (July-June), as against 194 lakh tonnes in the previous year, as per government data.
The country’s onion exports declined to 10.86 lakh tonnes in the 2014-15 fiscal due to high MEP (minimum export price), as against 13.58 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
Assocham has suggested timely and realistic assessment of crop and a reliable estimate of consumption requirement state-wise with proper understanding of peak demand period/month and volumes is a pre-requisite for prudent handling of the developing situation in onions.
A local court on Friday rejected the bail application of 35-year-old corporate lawyer Jahnvi Gadkar, who is accused of mowing down two persons here on June 10 under the influence of alcohol.
This was her second bail application that was rejected by the Kurla metropolitan magistrate’s court. Her first plea was turned down on June 10.
Gadkar had moved the second bail plea on July 16.
Her lawyer had said in the bail application the investigation in the case was over and hence she could be granted the relief.
Gadkar also said that the police have got various documents like blood report, RTO report, while all the injured victims have been discharged from the hospital.
She also told the court, through her lawyer Mahesh Sabnis, that she will cooperate with the police in the case.
However, the police opposed her bail application saying that the case is triable by the sessions court and, hence the magistrate’s court cannot grant her bail.
The police also contended that her bail was rejected at the previous instance by the same court on the ground that the offence was serious and the investigation was underway.
In the early hours of June 10, an Audi driven by Gadkar rammed a taxi, resulting in the death of two persons, including the taxi driver on the Eastern Freeway here.
The deceased were identified as Mohammed Abdul Sayyad (55) and Mohammed Salim Sabuwala (50).
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday alleged that NCP leader Ramesh Kadam, who headed the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Economic Development Corporation (LASDC), had illegally siphoned off funds and distributed them to political leaders.
Replying to a debate on the issue raised through a calling attention notice amid uproarious scenes, Fadnavis said his government will probe the money trail in the case.
He said funds of this Corporation were meant for welfare of the ‘Matang’ community but Kadam as its chief siphoned off crores of rupees for his personal interest and also gave the money to some political leaders.
The CM said Kadam, a MLA from Mohol in Solapur district, is absconding and “orders have been issued for his arrest.”
Kadam was the Chairman of the Corporation between 2010 and 2014, when the alleged irregularities to the tune of Rs. 526 crore took place.
The alleged scam involves fraudulent disbursal of loans taken from district cooperative and national banks in the name of serving the needy and backward sections.
In an aggressive posturing that reflects increasing strains in partnership with the BJP, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said he was determined to bring his party to power on its own in Maharashtra.
He also dubbed Sharad Pawar-led NCP as “a shameless party” for offering unsolicited support to BJP after the Assembly elections.
“It is my dream that there should be only Shiv Sena’s rule in Maharashtra in the future. Snatching this power for the Sena is not only my dream, but my resolve. Every Shiv Sainik (party volunteer) dreams of this and soon the whole Maharashtra will dream of this,” Thackeray said in an interview to Sena MP Sanjay Raut in party mouthpiece ‘Saamna’.
Directing his ire at the NCP for pledging support to the BJP to form government in the post-poll scenario, he said, “NCP is a shameless party. Inspite of so much being said about them, they offered support (to BJP) without being asked for. It wasn’t the case with Shiv Sena. We agreed to support only after the BJP formally asked us for it.”
Turning up the heat on BJP, Uddhav called for a probe into the allegations of corruption against BJP ministers, including the “chikki” scam that has cast a cloud over Woman Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde.
“It first needs to be ascertained how much truth is there in these allegations. Then, an independent inquiry needs to be conducted to bring out the facts before the people. If the allegations of corruption are found to be untrue, action should be taken against those responsible,” Thackeray said.
The opposition Congress and NCP have sought Munde’s resignation in the backdrop of alleged irregularities in awarding contracts totalling Rs 206 crore for supply of a host of items including ‘chikki’, a popular snack, by the Woman and Child Development Department skipping e-tender route.
“Terrible news on chikkis is doing the rounds. Is this incident a result of a quarrel between two contractors? Were there impurities in the chikkis? Did it (the Woman and Child Development Department) have the right to procure chikkis without calling for e-tenders? An inquiry needs to be done into all this,” he said.
Hours after a special CBI court rejected social activist Teesta Setalvad’s bail plea, the Bombay High Court on Friday extended her interim bail application by two weeks.
Setalvad had moved Bombay HC after her bail plea was turned down by a Central Bureau of Investigation court in connection with a case registered by CBI alleging that her company received Rs. 1.8 crore from abroad without mandatory approval from Centre.
“The anticipatory bail application is rejected,” Special judge Anis Khan had said while rejecting the plea.
Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand had moved the court for bail on July 17.
Immediately after the order, Setalvad told the court that she was shocked.
“I am shocked and aggrieved by the verdict as this is a petty offence. My sympathisers feel that this is an attempt (by the government) to intimidate and possibly eliminate us by the powers (sic).”
The CBI had on July 8 registered a case against Setalvad and Anand alleging that her firm Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited (SCPPL) received around 2.9 lakh USD in foreign donations in violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
According to the agency, SCPPL was not registered under FCRA for collecting money from abroad and the amount of nearly Rs. 1.8 crore (2.9 lakh USD) was, therefore, received in violation of the Act as the organisation needed to seek prior approval from the Union Home Ministry.
Teesta and her husband, through their lawyer, had told the court that they were innocent and were falsely implicated.
Her advocate Mihir Desai told the court that the only reason why the agency wanted to arrest them is to humiliate them for their work in Gujarat.
However, CBI in their reply, last Friday, had said that motive behind the transfer of foreign contribution to SCPPL reflected interference towards the internal security and activities of India.
“Such act of foreign donor would prejudicially affect the security, strategic, scientific and economic interest of the state and also affect the harmony between religious, social, linguistic or regional groups, castes or communities”, the CBI had said in its reply while opposing her plea.
The agency said the allegations against them (Setalvad and Anand) are serious in nature and it is proposed to unravel all the contours of the offence and the conspiracy during the investigation.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Friday saw pandemonium created by opposition members when Opposition Congress-NCP demanded resignation of ministers facing corruption charges.
The ruling BJP-Sena also demanded probe in the multi-crore Annabhau Sathe Corporation scam and arrest of middlemen in the Telgi case.
The House saw disruptions twice before being adjourned for the day as Speaker Haribhau Bagde rushed through the day’s agenda amid pandemonium.
The Treasury and Opposition members displayed placards and shouted slogans resulting in ruckus.
Earlier, Opposition members gathered on the stairs of the Vidhan Bhavan building and staged a sit-in protest demanding resignation of Education Minister Vinod Tawde over his alleged fake degree, Women and Child Welfare minister Pankaja Munde in the ‘chikki’ scam as well as Water Supply Minister Babanrao Lonikar and Minister of State for Home, Ranjit Patil against whom allegations have been made.
As soon as the House assembled for the day and Speaker called for the Question Hour, Leader of Opposition, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded that the adjournment notice regarding the Opposition demand be taken up for discussion.
To counter the Opposition charge, ruling BJP-Sena legislators demanded action against NCP MLA Ramesh Kadam over allegations of siphoning-off funds of Annabhau Sathe Corporation and demanded his arrest.
The ruling party members also displayed placards about arresting middlemen of Abdul Karim Telgi, the main accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper case following which the House had to be adjourned for 20 minutes.
The Maharashtra government on Friday informed the Legislative Council that it will within a month’s time prepare the draft Bill of the law to protect journalists after consulting Leaders of Opposition and group leaders of parties of both the Houses.
While speaking during the Calling Attention motion, Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde raised the issue of increasing instances of attacks on journalists recently and said that the issue of their security has become very serious.
“Recently, there was an attack on a female journalist when she went to cover a cylinder blast at Santacruz. Another journalist was killed while covering a bar raid in Mira road. The attacks are slowly increasing and the issue of security of journalists has become very serious now. In how many days will the government formulate a law for protection of journalists?” Munde questioned.
In response, Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde said that during the previous government, a committee under then Industries minister Narayan Rane had been set up to formulate a law for the protection of journalists.
“The committee report was even submitted to the state cabinet but a discussion on the issue did not happen then. That committee had five cabinet ministers in it, yet, a law could not be formulated. Now, the state government will also study the report of the Rane committee before formulating a new law,” Shinde said.
He further said that the Director General of Police will be given fresh instructions on the security of journalists keeping in the view the increasing incidents of attacks on them.
“The draft of the Bill for protection of journalists will be ready within a month. Before that, we will hold a meeting with the LoPs and group leaders of political parties of both the Houses so that it can be discussed in detail,” he said.
Munde then claimed that 265 journalists were attacked in the previous year and when asked to give information about it under the RTI, the government said that it does not have the number of journalists attacked.
“Cases of attacks on journalists are increasing by the day and hence a strict law is necessary. After coming up with a Bill, the government should issue a notification soon so that it can be converted into a law during the Winter session of the Assembly,” Munde said.
A late top official of RAW had favoured clemency for death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai blast case Yakub Memon on the ground that he had cooperated with investigating agencies and does not deserve to be hanged.
B Raman, who retired as Additional Secretary in 1994 and was in-charge of counter-terrorism, had written an article for publication containing this view but stopped it from seeing the light of the day following an afterthought.
But the article has now been published on a website which talks about Memon being picked up in Nepal and his subsequent formal arrest at Old Delhi railway station by the CBI.
Chennai-based B S Raghavan, brother of the late Raman, said “everything that has been published is correct and he (Raman) had written it”.
Raman, who passed away in 2013, had written about a “moral dilemma” in his mind ever since he had read about the sentencing of Memon to death by the court in 2006.
“There is not an iota of doubt about the involvement of Yakub and other members of the family in the conspiracy and their cooperation with the ISI till July 1994. In normal circumstances, Yakub would have deserved the death penalty if one only took into consideration his conduct and role before July 1994.
“But if one also takes into consideration his conduct and role after he was informally picked up in Kathmandu, there is a strong case for having second thoughts about the suitability of the death penalty in the subsequent stages of the case,” said the article which has been published after taking permission from his brother.
The writer, who has written a book “The Kaoboys of RAW”, spoke about many questions in his mind before writing the article but said “ultimately, I decided to write this in the belief that it is important to prevent a person, who in my view does not deserve to be hanged, from going to the gallows.”
According to him, Yakub had cooperated with the probe agencies and assisted them by persuading some other members of the Memon family to flee from the protection of the ISI in Karachi to Dubai and surrender to the Indian authorities.
“The cooperation of Yakub with the investigating agencies after he was picked up informally in Kathmandu and his role in persuading some other members of the family to come out of Pakistan and surrender constitute, in my view, a strong mitigating circumstance to be taken into consideration while considering whether the death penalty should be implemented,” he had argued in his article.
