Either save our lives or allow us to die: Vyapam accused MBBS students appeal to President

Five Gwalior-based students accused of clearing their Vyapam pre-medical entrance exam by cheating have made an emotional appeal to President Pranab Mukherjee urging him to either restore their self-esteem or allow them to end their lives, said reports on Thursday.

In their letter to the President, these five utterly harassed and frustrated students – Manish Sharma, Raghvendra Singh, Pankaj Bansal, Amit Chadha and Vikas Gupta – have alleged that though their names have been cleared by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of all charges, they were still being hounded by the college authorities.

These MBBS students have accused the authorities at the Gajra Raja Medical College of making their lives a living hell.

These five students came under scanner in 2013 when they were accused of passing the Pre Medical Test (PMT) through fraudulent means after it was found that their photos or signatures in the admit card failed to match with the college identity card.

They are among 3000-odd people, who have been accused of involvement in the multi-crore rupees scam, which also involves the state’s medical education system.

In their letter, these students have appealed the President to intervene in their case, while also describing how they are still being treated as ‘frauds’ in their college.

Importantly, Ramendra Singh, a graduate from the same college had committed suicide earlier this year after being repeatedly harassed for being allegedly involved in the multi-crore Vyapam scam despite getting a clean chit by the SIT.

“Right now, we are either failed by our college, or we are suspended. Our future looks bleak. That’s why we have written a letter to the President asking for permission to undergo euthanasia,” one of them was quoted as saying by media reports.

Vyapam which stands for Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, is also known as Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board. The scam dates back to 2007, but it came to light at least four years later.

The investigation into the murkier scandal has been hit by a series of mysterious deaths of important accused, whistleblowers and witnesses.

Delhi serial rapist Ravinder Kumar slapped in court, sent to Tihar jail for 14 days

Serial rapist and murderer Ravinder Kumar has been sent to Tihar jail for 14 days by a Delhi court. A total of 27 cases have been registered against the 24-year-old accused.

Reportedly, the rapist was also slapped by lawyers in the Rohini court premises.

In a shocking revelation, Kumar had admitted to raping and murdering more than 30 children in and around Delhi since 2008.

Police said that the accused used to lure children with candies and kill them if they resisted.

Worse, he would have sex with their bodies, making him suffer from necrophilia.

Kumar on Tuesday admitted to having committed his first crime when he was barely 17 years old.

A labourer’s girl child from a Delhi Metro construction site here was his first victim. He took her to an isolated spot, had sex with her and then dumped the body after killing her.

Arvind Kejriwal says Lt Governor Najeeb Jung acting for Narendra Modi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday denounced Lt Governor Najeeb Jung as a dictator and accused him of working at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The chief minister has written to Jung saying that by describing himself (Jung) as ‘the government’, the Lt. Governor was acting at the behest of Modi,” a Delhi government official said. Kejriwal demanded to know if Jung was trying to act like a dictator.

The letter followed Jung’s decision to reject the Delhi government’s appointment of Swati Maliwal as chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).In his communication rejecting Maliwal’s appointment, Jung had described his office as “the government” in Delhi.

The Delhi Chief Minister further claimed that Jung was following the Prime Minister’s directives on the matter.

“On the direction of Prime Minister Modi, the Lieutenant Governor has made the DCW ineffective. Earlier he had same with the ACB of Delhi,” said Kerjiwal.

Pulling up Lieutenant Governor Jung for his statement calling himself the Government of Delhi, Kejriwal said, “the Lieutenant Governor has written in his letter, that he himself is the Government in Delhi, how is this possible? How can a person call himself a govt, this will lead dictatorship in Delhi. India is a democratic country and Delhi has an elected government. The Delhi Government cannot be person specific.”

The Lieutenant Governor, who has been locked in a tussle with Kejriwal over the appointment and transfer of senior bureaucrats, declared Maliwal’s appointment as “ultra vires” of the rules.

The AAP has rejected allegations of nepotism made by the BJP and the Congress over Maliwal’s appointment. Silencing all critics, the AAP Government said that it picked the person who is best suited for the job.

Charlize Theron’s saucy suggestion to President

Charlize-TheronActress Charlize Theron suggested President Barack Obama visit a strip club in order to reach a “new demographic”.

The “Mad Max: Fury Road” actress has an unfortunate habit of being “really inappropriate” when she gets nervous, and she got so flustered when she met the US leader.

“I have this thing that happens when I get nervous, that I get so nervous that I will say something really inappropriate. It’s like Tourette’s in a weird way. Like, I don’t know to stop it. It’s like blaulalal! It’s like verbal diarrhoea,” she said on TV show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Charlize, 39, recalled how the President told her that appearing on shows like Jimmy’s allowed him to reach new audiences, so she suggested another way of doing so. “And then there was this pause, and I didn’t know what to say, and all I could come up with was, ‘Well, if you’re looking for a different demographic, I can take you to a strip club’.”

On board training should become IMO’s agenda

Over the years, International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has done a laudable job by promoting safety at sea and addressing environmental concerns. The spiritual development of the seafarer has not been given much prominence even when it is realized that the loneliness in a seafarer’s life needs spiritual balm. Prior to ISPS era, the priests visited the ship and gave us soothing talk and even helped us by taking us out to town and bringing back, saving our money and providing security in transit. Father used to come with the van at Vancouver and Portland and took us out and brought us back on board after some hours ashore.

At Durban, the van started to shuttle by taking people to club at 6 pm and dropping people back to ships at 9 pm. Richards Bay has a very big club and bus used to shuttle from ship to club and back. Recently, I had noticed that everybody must do a course for designated security duties. It’s a two day course and fees varies widely from college to college (at least in Mumbai) and I can’t say how people will become more proficient. Masters and Chief Officers on board could have easily provided such kind of training and it would have been more realistic. I still recollect, we were put through training session on Dangerous goods code ship by our Croatian chief mate. He amicably taught us about classification, segregation and precautions to be taken in regard to these, which I don’t think any one of us has forgotten.

A small test was conducted and we even got certificate signed by him and the master. The material was also put as CBT in Ship’s office computer so that you can make amendments whenever you like. On a car carrier, there was a similar computer based course on safety and good practices where you even get your scores and it was popular because everybody wanted to perform better (something like karaoke). Do you think any amount of certification would have improved the behaviour of Costa Concordia Master?

Let us pitch for allowing priests a visit on board. In one of the Japanese ports an old husband- wife team used to come to mess room by carrying useful items. The husband was blind, and every crew member bought some thing from them and the cook even fed them. This depicted the kind nature of seamen. Seamen are generous persons and they love to interact. Let us provide such an opportunity to them. While crossing Magellan strait, two priests always visited us and interacted with us and provided reading material. On board visit of holy persons and on board training should now become the agenda of the IMO.

Will leptospirosis prove to be fatal?

Doctors are worried about the rising cases of leptospirosis in the city.

LeptospirosisThe heavy rains witnessed by Mumbai since last two days has resulted into waterlogging in several parts of the city. Already 16 people have died in the metropolis due to leptospirosis a water-borne disease that witnesses a spurt during monsoons. Doctors are already worried about the rising cases of leptospirosis in the city. When people walk through flooded streets, there is a higher chance of them coming in contact with such infected urine and faecal matter and contracting the disease.

Mumbai is the only district which has recorded so many deaths due to the bacterial infection which is more common in the Konkan belt. Leptospirosis spreads when the urine of a dog or rat infected by the disease and comes in contact with human skin.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started holding awareness campaigns and taken some initiatives to get rid of rodents from the city. As per official sources 1.18 lakh rats were killed in Mumbai in the past 6 months, since January. However, the civic body has received flak from the opposition for not doing enough to control rat menace in the city.

“The civic body is supposed to employ 44 workers to kill rats, but currently there are only 31 on the civic body’s payroll. Moreover, the only incentive given to these workers to kill rats is their daily wage. If these workers do not kill 30 rats in one night and produce them before the civic body as proof, they are not paid their wages for the day”, according to Devendra Amberkar, the leader of the opposition in the BMC.

“People should take proper precautions during monsoon season. They must avoid walking on water logged streets. Citizens also must refrain from having street food and drink warm water” said a civic official.

In 2013, Thane had reported seven deaths and in 2012, Sindhdurg had recorded five deaths (which were the highest any district has recorded before Mumbai).

In 2012, the entire state had reported 16 leptospirosis deaths, which marginally increased to 20 in 2013 and dropped further to seven last year. There have been no deaths so far in the region.

“It is not difficult to treat patients with leptospirosis. We were able to reduce the mortality by identifying patients with symptoms in the initial stage and treating them,” said Dr Satish Pawar, director, directorate of health service, Maharashtra.

However, a senior civic official said the thickly populated slums, self-medication and the presence of private doctors who are usually the first point of contact made matters worse. “There was a delay in treatment in most cases which resulted in death,” said a civic official.

“People should not walk barefoot on accumulated water as they might get infected. Pedestrians should wear comfortable footwear during the rainy season” he added.

Andamans had effectively managed to deal with Leptospirosis by conducting awareness programmes for farmers and animal handlers on taking care of their wounds and rearing animals in hygienic conditions.
